LAST WEEK’S MEETING

Chairman Andy opened the meeting by welcoming President Alex and the Nambour 76 Rotarians and Partners, our Partners, guests and Hypothetical Facilitator, John Boyd – a Past President of the Rotary Club of Toowong. And what a fitting celebration of Rotary’s 107th Birthday it turned out to be with exceptional fellowship and loads of fun – Vocational Service Director, Charlotte, is to be congratulated on organising what was arguably one of the best Rotary meetings ever! The meal was first class too! Interestingly, I had met a lady at my table five years ago when she led some Japanese Interactors on a visit here while I was DG. She told us that, after 40 years living in Japan, her family had been forced to return to Oz because of the fallout from the nuclear disaster – it would appear that contamination is a lot worse than we realise.

Brian K announced that once again he was volunteering his locks for the “shave for a cure” and would welcome contributions for the cause.

Charlotte introduced John and the panel (consisting of Helen Turner, Bob Hardy, and Alex Blake from Nambour 76, and Bernice, Rick V, and Brian K) were assembled to be quizzed on a series of ethical hypotheticals which John assured us had all occurred in the past. The scenario was a Board meeting of the Rotary Club of Ballyhoo and while the Directors were waiting for the President to show up questions about ethics in business were discussed - Alex thought there was much room for improvement.

• Helen, who considered her business of real estate to be one up from child molesters and used car salesmen, nevertheless adroitly parried some difficult issues involving the sale of property to a relative and how she would deal with her commission.

• Rick V maintained that self-values were probably more important than employer values and that they became more rigid with age. Those caught doing wrong should take full responsibility for their actions and there could be no allowances.

• Brian K admitted that he worshipped Naplan and would not be ringing the parents if underachieving grade 9’s happened to be absent on the test day. As promotion depended on performance it raised some interesting dilemmas for those in the education system.

• The club had done some sterling work at the local aged care facility and team leader Bernice had been given a scratchy in thanks from Mary, one of the residents – what to do with this gift and who should share in the winnings caused much hilarity but Bernice was firm in the belief that it should all go to charity – hopefully The Rotary Foundation.

• Alex was faced with the dilemma of whether it was ethical to sweeten a tender with a gift and somehow or other he managed to wriggle out of that one, while Bob wrestled with the appropriate punishment for fraud. There was a proposal to donate the latest 3D TV to the aged care facility and it was suggested that if Brian bought it through the education system, a considerable amount of GST could be saved – Helen objected, citing the 4 way Test, and Bob came up with the solution – to give the facility the money and they could buy the TV GST free! Questions over the relevance of the 4 Way Test were raised and it was realised that it could not always ‘be fair to all concerned’.

• Bob was on the District Conference Committee and discovered that the costs had risen but there was a holiday for 2 in it for him if he overlooked this – this was initially refused but, on hearing that the DG’s brother-in-law was somehow involved, the problem was solved by using the freebie as a raffle prize.

• Finally Rick was faced with a very difficult scenario involving a government tender and whether or not to keep his employees informed even though he was sworn to secrecy on the outcome and they really needed to know the truth because of actions they may or may not take in anticipation of lucrative job offers – obviously a born diplomat, Rick passed the ball very quickly to the Minister.

John summed up amidst much hilarity, the $250,000 did indeed go to The Rotary Foundation and Mary’s portrait now hangs in the Arch Klumph gallery, Brian ended up as Director of Education, and Helen won the R.E.I. Integrity Award. There was more but I was laughing so much that I can’t read my writing!

Rick V proposed the vote of thanks and presented John with the ubiquitous bowl and a copy of the Maleny Club history book. Chairman Andy was effusive in his thanks to all concerned with the organising of the meeting and to all who attended, particularly PP John, and closed the meeting. As usual when we go to Flaxton it was raining!

WORKING BEE AT THE HIGH SCHOOL

Brian King's group of volunteers successfully laid a concrete slab at the High School despite some inclement weather - obviously safety foot ware was optional.

There was a free and easy atmosphere and a certain amount of sitting down on the job was allowed.

As can be seen it was not a small slab.

Congratulations to all in the team!

LAST WEEK’S MEETING

In the absence of President Greg and the listed Duty Officer PE Karen took the chair and commenced the meeting by welcoming AG. Bill Waterfield and Guest Speaker Colin Sinclair from the Maleny Lion’s Club.

AG Bill spoke briefly but positively on the scope of the activities and projects in which our club has been involved as reported to him in regular Presidential reports. (A rather more optimistic view of the Club from the previous week's meeting - Ed)

Directors’ Reports

Community
• A table has been organized for the Sportsman’s Dinner. One seat remains - contact Jim A if interested.
• An invitation to adopt a road for the Keep Australia Beautiful campaign was not accepted.
• A proposal to support a Mental Health First Aid workshop was received positively and Karen Binstead has accepted the role of organizer.

International
• Ric outlined his concept for the “Coins on Maple” fund raiser. A mission statement is being prepared for presentation to the club.

Club Service
• Brian had received a question at the High School re support for Youth Exchange. It was confirmed that Maleny did not wish to accept an incoming student.
• Splendour in the Grass returns to NSW so no catering required at Woodford this year.
• Maleny Show dates are 1st and 2nd June.
• Brian intends to raise any meal issues with the hotel; please mention concerns to him rather than commenting to fellow members.
• Partners' Night on 29th at the hotel; the speaker will be David Crewe.
• An additional storage container is to be hired and housed at McLennan’s. This is required to accommodate material that must be removed from the RSL.

Vocational Service
• Hypothetical on Ethics at Flaxton Gardens next meeting. Anyone who wishes to come a little earlier ( perhaps 6.15PM) could enjoy extended fellowship. This invitation has been extended to Nambour 76 members also.
• Date claimer for March is Vocational Visit to Maple 3 on 21st. Cost will be as usual. Mark will provide the meal and explain some of the finer points of running his business.
• Future dates for your diary: April 18th visit to Gallery - wine and cheese (reduced cost) and May 2nd, Pride of Workmanship Awards.

Membership
• Chris advised that a marketing exercise is to be undertaken with the assistance of an experienced person in that field.

Rotary Christmas Tree
Chris outlined the concept of a box placed in the main street which the public can fill with vouchers from local businesses. These can then be distributed to the needy by various charitable agencies.

Bowel Scan
Rotary kits now have TGA approval and distribution will start in May.

Sergeant’s Session
Ric had obviously gone to the dogs with his canine humour but still extracted a little cash from members and guests.

Guest Speaker

Brian Allen introduced Colin Sinclair who spoke on the history ,organization and foundation of Lions. Colin has been in the organisation for 43 years and has been president of the local Lions group for three of those. After considerable research on the topic he presented an historical comparison of the two organisations showing a remarkable parallel between their development . Both commenced in Chicago in the early 1900s, both present awards in honour of their founder, both aim at helping the less fortunate. In Australia, however, Rotary was formed in 1921 with Lions some twenty years later.

Currently both associations are represented in over 200 countries with memberships of 1.35 million Lions and 1.2 million Rotarians. The structure of the association is similar to Rotary in that it consists of a Central International Office in Chicago with Australian offices in Newcastle. There are 19 Districts with a DG and Cabinet and ,of course, clubs. Each club is autonomous within the constraints of their constitution and ethics. A district convention is held each year.

While the focus of Lion’s projects tends to be local, fellowship visits to other clubs and countries are encouraged. Also support is provided to Lion’s International Foundation. Over the years 700 million dollars has been given in grants by this body to support foundations such as the “Fred Hollows” and the fight against measles with Bill Gates. Response to the needs of those in disaster affected areas has also drawn support.

Colin also spoke of the revival of the local club after a period of flagging membership attributing some of this to the efforts of remaining members, the robust nature of fellowship and engagement in worthwhile projects. He finished with the quote:
“I can do something and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something I can do”.

Charlotte proposed the vote of thanks.

'That's obscene!' the priest exclaimed,

Then he thought for a moment......

'You know,' he said, 'I may have a solution to your problem. I have two male talking parrots, which I have taught to pray and read the Bible...

Bring your two parrots over to my house, and we'll put them in the cage with Francis and Peter.

My parrots can teach your parrots to pray and worship,
And your parrots are sure to stop saying... That phrase... In no time.'

'Thank you,' the woman responded, 'this may very well be the solution.'

The next day, She brought her female parrots to the priest's house.... As he ushered her in, she saw that his two male parrots were inside their cage holding rosary beads and praying..

Impressed, She walked over and placed her parrots in with them...

After a few minutes, The female parrots cried out in unison:

Hi, we're hookers! Do you want to have some fun?'

There was stunned silence...

The one male parrot looked over at the other male parrot and said,

'Put the beads away, Francis,
Our prayers have been answered!

LAST WEEK’S MEETING

The meeting was opened by the Chairman Brian King at 7.00 pm. He welcomed the 19 members to the meeting and introduced the visiting Rotarian, Tony Freeman from the Rotary Club of Samford Valley, who would conduct the "Survey Summary Session" later.

After Rotary Grace, The Loyal Toast and the Toast to Rotary International, the Chairman called for Director's Reports.

Angela G asked for volunteers to operate the BBQ at the Bunya's Dreaming Festival and suggested that the members might form a table at the MSRC Sports Awards Night. Those interested to contact her.

Rick V advised members of the MCSR meeting and reminded them of the working bee to be conducted later at the MCSR. Details to be advised.

Charlotte G asked for nominations from members for the Vocational Service Awards to be held on 2 May. nominations to her as soon as possible.

After the meal was served, Sergeant Ric T conducted another of his fanciful sessions and managed to extract a little cash with his usual imagination. Unfortunately his jokes are not improving but he is trying. Mike G was obviously disappointed that there was no "Heads and Tails" as he was after a "hat trick".

After a short coffee adjournment, the Chairman introduced Tony Freeman and opened the Club Assembly. Tony's summary of the comments and suggestions from Maleny Rotary member survey is given below in full..

There were 18 responses – but add 4 who are overseas and one on leave of absence; that leaves a few who did not respond. So the 18 responses are probably a reflection of how the club as a whole feels .... so lets use that as the basis.

Everyone felt comfortable with sharing concerns with club leaders. (Good)

Most members have participated voluntarily in service projects – but there are a few more who want to do more in areas of Membership, Orientation & Education and International service projects.

The club Bulletin is described as: Interesting, Informative and useful (whew!!- Ed).... so it is a mouth piece for the club, but it can also be a mouth PEACE for the club too! It is seen to contain about the right “Rotary” information (83.3% of those who answered this question).

General Partner responses were that there was pride in Partner's membership, but it sometimes took too much time. There is also a desire for greater partner involvement – and this links directly to the fact that about 60% of respondents want more fellowship activities.

There are some serious areas that require work:

Of the 18 respondents, 15 answered in relation to the level of satisfaction with participation in the club:
7 were satisfied, which is less than 50%, however 3 were “Very satisfied” and another 3 were “dissatisfied” – what some people like or are happy with, others are not. The criticism here came from more than just the 3 “dissatisfied” respondents .... Personality conflict, cost rated highest, while lack of leadership, time constraints and insufficient family involvement were marked.
(One simple solution here, is that partners and friends should be welcome at any time and made welcome – even when the member partner is away)

Fix the fellowship issue and more partners will feel like attending more often as they will feel comfortable.

Club’s Involvement:
Membership is critical here; of the responses, 83.3% identified that member development was insufficient and also member orientation & education were similarly insufficient (also 83.3%).
Member retention was highlighted and followed closely behind at 14/18 or a bit <80%.
The service projects, PR, actions and fundraising rated OK.

Weekly meetings:
61% said they generally enjoyed weekly meetings – but there were a few serious comments made even by this group. Comments here were also “mostly enjoyed meetings”.

The location of the venue was considered convenient and the meeting time was OK – but a couple of comments included suggestions that it should start 30 minutes earlier .

Programme came in for some attention: 3 thought good; 6 thought it was adequate and 5 thought “poor” ..... that is always an issue to find good speakers that keep everyone happy and interested. One way round this would be to allocate weekly programme on rotation through the members so they all get a chance to have a topic of choice and share an interest with all members. In reality this means that each member has to find an interesting guest speaker about once a year ..... if you have 50 meetings, less a few forums/assemblies, less a few other specific meetings like the DG visit, etc ..... BUT EVERYONE HAS TO PULL THEIR weight on this. You can have a few back up programmes because there will be the inevitable illness or late cancellation (as there is now). Of course Club Directors might also be encouraged to arrange additional information nights (Vocational, TRF, Community etc).

Meeting frequency is delicate : 44% say weekly meetings are right but 56% say its excessive – this also links back to programme, fellowship etc and comfort of members.

Rotary content of the weekly meetings was generally OK (10/18) but 1 considered it excessive and 3 said insufficient ( there is no identification here how long each of the respondents have been members and this may be important)

Length of weekly meetings: 3 = excessive; 10=OK and 1 = not long enough

Voluntary contributions should not be excessive – that is, donate what you are comfortable with; particularly people on limited income.

To get 31 comments from 18 responses shows that either a heart to heart with venue owner or new venue are required urgently. Comments such as atrocious meals, disgusting meals and service are simply not acceptable. Need to form a committee urgently to find a new venue in the immediate area and to talk with
management of the current venue.

Although Tony's address passed mostly without comment, there was an adverse reaction from the floor to his final remarks which appear to be sharply at odds with his earlier summary; "The location of the venue was considered convenient and the meeting time was OK." - see above.

PP Rick pointed out that there had been a extensive survey conducted by the Club in 2010/11 of possible meeting locations which had concluded that the Hotel was the best available option and, lacking any new evidence, he believed that this was still the case.

The Chairman thanked Tony for the time and effort that he had put into the Survey and expressed our Club's gratitude for his involvement.

The meeting was closed at 8.35 pm.

A drunk woman, stark naked, jumped into a taxi at a Durban Cab Rank.

The Indian driver opened his eyes wide and stared at the woman. He made no attempt to start the Cab.

"What's wrong with you Luv, haven't you ever seen a naked woman before?"

"I'll not be staring at you lady, I am telling you, that would not be proper, where I am coming from".

"Well if you're not bloody staring at me Luvie, what are you doing then?"

"Well, I am looking and looking, and I am thinking to myself, where is this lady keeping the money to be paying me with."

LAST WEEK’S MEETING

Chairman Chris B opened the meeting with 20 members present and continued to conduct it in his own inimical style. He welcomed back Angela G who had made up at RC of South Foreland in Dover. Angela announced that there would be a Community Service committee meeting on 2nd February.

Brian K indicated that the formwork for the school project was due to be set up on 11th February.

Charlotte G was anxious for members to confirm their attendance at the joint meeting with Nambour 76 on 22nd February.

For Youth, Chris B reported that flyers were being distributed seeking applicants for 'Adventure in Citizenship".
Bike Ed will be held for Maleny towards the end of the year. The River School will replace Montville in this programme.
The first InterAct meeting for the year will be held next week.

Brian A reported that there was $7,800 in the bank from calendar sales; the final figure was expected to be about $8,500. Deb L and Rick V had volunteered to join the committee. Lionel T asked members for their feedback about past calendars.

Sergeant Ric delegated fine collection to members with mixed results. Mike G collected a second successive scratchy for winning heads and tails.

Chairman Chris introduced Lloyd Larney to speak on "This is my life - Part 2". Lloyd came to Maleny in 1969 and started to operate two school buses. He then listed, with great modesty, the large number of voluntary organisations in which he played mostly leading roles over a considerable number of years. A non-inclusive list would read: in 1970 he joined our Club, the P&C, Scouts, RSL, Show Society, Bowls Club and Meals on Wheels. In 1977 he joined the Board of CRL and was Chairman from 1989 to 2004 during the building and development of Erowal from scratch, mostly by volunteer labour. He became the first Group Leader of the SES when it was formed in 1981. The SES shed in the Showgrounds was built by volunteers. In 1986, he joined the Rural Fire Brigade; the Brigade had received a donated 4WD truck but members had to buy their own clothing and equipment!

He finished by describing a difficult life saving rescue carried out by the SES in Bulimba Creek.

His presentation was greeted with richly deserved applause. Rather than questions, a couple of members pointed out that he had failed to record some significant facts - his setting up of Bike Ed, arranging for the Jaws of Life and his receipt of the Caloundra City Citizen of the Year Award. He quietly put this down to advancing years - however this did not detract from a record of very condiderable achievement.

A CAUTIONARY TALE FROM OUR MARRIAGE COUNSELLOR

'The Obedient Wife'

There was a man, who had worked all his life, had saved all of his money, and was a real miser when it came to his money.

Just before he died, he said to his wife...'When I die, I want you to take all my money and put it in the casket with me. I want to take my money to the afterlife with me.'

And so he got his wife to promise him, with all of her heart, that when he died, she would put all of the money into the casket with him.

Well, he died.

He was stretched out in the casket, his wife was sitting there - dressed in black, and her friend was sitting next to her. When they finished the ceremony, and just before the undertakers got ready to close the casket, the wife said:

'Wait just a moment!'

She had a small metal box with her; she came over with the box and put it in the casket. Then the undertakers locked the casket down and they rolled it away.

So her friend said:

'Girl, I know you were not foolish enough to put all that money in there with your husband.'

The loyal wife replied:

'Listen, I'm a Christian; I cannot go back on my word. I promised him that I was going to put that money into the casket with him.'

'You mean to tell me you put that money in the casket with him!?!?!?'

'I sure did,' said the wife.

'I got it all together, put it into my account, and wrote him a cheque....

If he can cash it, then he can spend it.'

17 Members and Guest Speaker Tim Bagshaw from Maleny Apex Club were welcomed by the Chairman Jim Atkinson.

VP Mike Gregory advised the meeting that Roly Nieper and Peter Wilkinson had tendered their resignations. Mike also requested that members complete the membership satisfaction survey and submit them to the facilitator Tony Freeman by January 31st.

Lionel announced that due to the Therapeutic Drugs Administration evaluating all bowel scan packs, this year’s Bowel Scan program would not take place until June or July. Lionel also asked members to consider joining the Calendar Committee to fill two positions that have become available.

Charlotte requested members to attend the joint meeting with Nambour 76, which is to be held at Flaxton Gardens on Wednesday 22nd February. The meeting is to take the form of a Hypothetical on the subject of Ethics.

Rick Vickers advised that the Probus Club of Maleny would celebrate its 25th Anniversary at a morning tea to be held at Mary Cairncross on Wednesday 14th March. As the Maleny Rotary Club established this Probus Club, it would be good if some members could attend. Rick said that a decision is yet to be
made whether Splendour in the Grass will be held at Woodford again this year. Rick also announced that a working bee would be held at Mary Cairncross Park on Saturday 25th February and assured the meeting that there would be meaningful work to do !!!

In the absence of Sergeant Rick, Bill ran the Sergeant's session in his usual efficient manner and extracted money from all members as well as our Guest Speaker whom “we normally don’t fine” !!!

Brian King introduced the Guest Speaker Tim Bagshaw who spoke on Apex. The Maleny Apex Club was chartered in 1962 by the Nambour Apex Club under the guidance of our own Peter Wilkinson, who was a member of the Nambour Apex Club at the time. Apex itself was started in 1930 by three Geelong Vic.
Architects who tried to join Rotary but the rule of Rotary at that time prohibited more than one member from each profession becoming a member. They then set up their own club and called it Apex.

The major fund raiser for the Club is the Maleny Business Directory. The Directory was started 31 years ago by Apexian Alan Heading and has grown so much over the intervening years that in 2011 it raised $86,000 for the club. This enables the club to support many projects both locally and nationally with the emphasis on putting money back into the local community from where they raise their funds.

In 2011 the club helped fund the Road Craft project for Maleny High School Students at a cost of $24000, and as well they fund, to the tune of $7000 annually, holidays in Maleny for Leukemia and Cystic Fibrosis
sufferers from throughout Queensland. Tim said that despite women being able to be members of Apex, the Maleny Club did not have any female members and he felt that if women were to become members it would change the nature of the Maleny Club. T

Tim also advised that, like all clubs, they were having difficulty in recruiting new members, particularly younger members.

Chairman Jim thanked Tim for speaking to the Club and presented him with a copy of Humanity in Motion.

A CAUTIONARY TALE FROM A PASSING PIPER

As a bagpiper, I play many gigs. Recently I was asked by a Funeral Director to play at a graveside service for a homeless man. He had no family or friends,
so the service was to be at a pauper's' cemetery in the back country.

As I was not familiar with the backwoods, I got lost and, being a typical man, I didn't stop to ask for directions.

I finally arrived an hour late and saw the funeral guy had evidently gone and the hearse was nowhere in sight. There were only the diggers and crew left and they were eating lunch. I felt badly and apologized to the men for being late. I went to the side of the grave and looked down;the vault lid was already in place. I didn't know what else to do, so I started to play.

The workers put down their lunches and began to gather around. I played out my heart and soul for this man with no family and friends. I played like I've never played before for this homeless man.

And as I played 'Amazing Grace,' the workers began to weep. They wept,I wept, we all wept together.

When I finished I packed up my bagpipes and started for my car. Though my head hung low, my heart was full.

As I opened the door to my car, I heard one of the workers say, "I never seen nothin' like that before and I've been putting in septic tanks for twenty years."

Apparently I'm still lost....it's a man thing!

Summary:
Quiet month. Good revenue from calendar sales and the street carnival with minimal expenses. Some expenses for Sunshine Safari, Carols at Twilight and street carnival to come in January 12.

We were informed of a Joint Club meeting with Nambour 76 at a date to be announced.

The Sergeant then extracted some fine money from members followed by the heads & tails which was won by Keith Rogers (without the accompanying benefit of a scratchy!).

Winston Johnston was then asked to speak on his idea of the Service Clubs combining on a joint venture to have a unisex toilet block built in Cooke Park.

This Park was gifted to the Council by the Cooke family many years ago. It now has a kid’s playground and is adjacent to the Town Bus Stop, which makes it an ideal place to have this amenity.

Winston suggested that we need to approach the Council to see if and how they could support this building; its response would determine the scope of the project for the Clubs that would be involved. It could be raising funds and/or working to build under supervision.

There was some interest in this project with members' questions & general discussion. It was suggested that this could be a forerunner to projects in the Maleny Precinct. The Club members need to discuss our involvement further.

Winston was thanked for his talk and presented with a copy of the booklet Humanity in Motion.

The meeting was then closed and we were reminded to take notice of dates of upcoming activities

Meeting chaired by ADO Rick V who did an outstanding job, welcoming all back from the Christmas break.

Various directors and chair presented summarised reports notifying offer of Solomon Island trip in late Feb – early March; Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve work party required in late Feb; Members to get a satisfaction questionnaire to assist the facilitator running the club assembly.

Club Service Director Brian King:

2. rosters are out so any changes need members to do personally and inform Keith R, Geoff C.

3. He corrected the Range News article about year 12 results with 1 OP1 and 3 OP4, rest did well with above State average.

4. High School footpath to be done Fri 20 Jan (formwork) and Sat 21 Jan (concrete pour) - Same as Sausage Sizzle. Later advised formwork now 26 Jan with concrete pour Sat 28 Jan.

Treasurer Jeff: we are in good shape, and all should now have their half yearly fees invoices.

Sgt Session: insightful, creative, funny and mercifully brief.

Guest speaker, Lloyd Larney, introduced by DO John McL, then gave an informative yet highly entertaining session on the aspects of his life spanning the period in the RAAF from 1947 to about the middle 1960’s. Many anecdotes about the highs and lows in the RAAF from the start point in Forrest Hills to Amberley, Archerfield, Changi, Korea and Hiroshima, and through work on the many aircraft such as Vampires, Mosquito bombers, Lincoln bombers , Mustangs, helicopters and the VIP flight.

Rick V (ADO) then provided a vote of thanks to Lloyd and looked forward to next episode of his life. Meeting brought to close on time.

LAST WEEK’S MEETING

Ably chaired by PP Lionel who welcomed three partners, our guest speaker, and DG Carolyn.

IPP Rick announced the MSHS footpath linking the new building would be constructed next month with Malcolm coordinating.

He then presented PHF recognition to Malcolm, our quiet achiever. The citation was:

"Malcolm has been with Rotary since 1997. In the last two decades he has steadfastly led and supported many of our activities, especially when it came to moving members (in bulk) from one location to another by bus, and the hands-on construction tasks. He always gets us there and back safely and around this town you will see Malcolm has left his mark in many places.

He has been a part of that group of members who diligently and quietly (well not so quietly as they all have an opinion on what has to be done) get on with the task but everybody knows who is in charge , who has the wisdom and the experience to do the construction tasks the right way. Many projects saw the light of day because of his belief that it could work and could be done. We trusted his judgement to get the job started and to get it finished. The recent bus shelter at the MSHS, the BBQ picnic shelter in Pecan Park, the bicentennial project on Howell Knob, the wonderful vandal proof seating at the high school, and so on. This, in today’s world of hustle and bustle, is remarkable and an outstanding achievement, reflecting the wonderful fundamentals of Rotary's principles which we have always admired - that of trust.

Malcolm always puts his teams at ease. This is really neat - creating harmony within a bunch of strong opinionated leaders with a project that we can be proud of and providing economic benefit to some part of the community. As always this was a selfless contribution, with many hours spent preparing for the tasks and keeping the momentum going.

Malcolm, you will always be remembered for your dedication to each task you choose to undertake. This has been acknowledged by many members of the club and of the works in the community. Nevertheless, we would like to now demonstrate our acknowledgement of your selfless service by extending the Rotary hand of friendship and honouring your work. You have played a significant part in raising the profile of Rotary in this community and especially highlighting this Club’s contribution to community projects. You have provided clear evidence that everyone involved in these little landmarks around the hinterland are a lasting legacy to your selfless service.

Malcolm, please accept this Paul Harris pin and wear it with pride and know that you have made an indelible impression on this Club, and on a community that probably doesn’t know who was the instigator of the many projects around town.

Congratulations.

This was greeted with a standing ovation.

President Greg announced that the Board had agreed to award PP Dick with Honorary Membership and Dick, as usual, was not short of a word.

DG Carolyn presented the Club with The Rotary Foundation Award for the highest per capita giving to the Annual Programs Fund in the District during 2010/11 and commented that our achievement of $402.61 was almost twice as much as the second placed Club, Kingaroy. IPP Rick, in accepting the award on behalf of the Club, congratulated all those involved in the Tiber Toga production which had generated significant funds.

Malcolm – thanks from Maleny Singers for our assistance with Carols by Candlelight, Brian A – 41% of calendars sold, President Greg – hosting of Sunshine Safari successful (thanks Deb), and Xmas Carnival (thanks Jim).

The Rotary Information spot was given by PP Michael - The recent 2011 Zone 8 and 7B Institute for past, present and future Rotary Officers included, for the first time, the attendance of 160 “future leaders” taking overall attendance to around 700. RIPE Sakuji Tanaka, RID Stuart Heal, TRF Trustees Anne Matthews and Ian Risely, and new General Secretary John Hewko were in attendance. We were brought up to date on all that is happening in the Rotary world but one of the most significant reports was from RID Stuart Heal who spoke about the problems in Rotary and what could be done to correct present negative trends. His concerns included:
Rotary is stagnant and costly.
Women comprise only 17% globally (20% in Australia & NZ) of total membership.
Old traditions are holding us back.
Membership retention is poor—Recruitment is not an issue.
We are not attracting (or holding) younger members.
Poor attendance by members is a concern.

He suggested:
Clubs should decide their attendance requirements.
Better PR is required as the public does not recognize Rotary.
RI has moved to have Rotary included in all press announcements regarding the eradication of Polio.
Our brand is confused; too many logos & badges.
The public does not recognize The Rotary Foundation logo as being part of Rotary.
We need a massive campaign for women members.
Should Clubs become Branches and lose autonomy?
Old clubs which don’t embrace change should be allowed to die.
Rotary should be active on Facebook, Twitter, etc.
In a corporate sense, 12 months terms make no sense; should we increase these to two year terms?
John Hewko raised the question of whether the COL should continue in its present form – it is too slow to respond to a rapidly changing world – a continuous online forum may be the answer? Re-Districting is back on the agenda – 9790 disappears in 2013 and 9570 in 2014 – which leaves us with 20 Districts in Australia.

Our guest speaker, Helen Walker, whose topic was ‘Remote Area Nursing’ was introduced by Chairman Lionel. Helen has worked in Central Australia and for Mercy Ships in Africa but concentrated her presentation on her work at the 15 Health Centres in the Torres Strait. One island is a mere 3k’s from the PNG mainland so they have to cope with many PNG nationals coming for treatment and she highlighted two cases – childbirth and snakebite.

Her work involves a major education component – training indigenous health workers and advising community members on proper diet – preventable health care gives her the greatest satisfaction. There is no fancy equipment so they have to be an adaptable ‘Jill of all trades’, work on an equal footing with the doctors, while coping with the extreme isolation and lack of amenities.

In conclusion, Helen showed some photos of the islands and their inhabitants and explained about their culture.

Helen was thanked by PP Michael on behalf of the Club and presented with the History of Maleny Rotary and Humanity in Motion books.

Chairman Lionel closed the meeting with best wishes for Xmas and the New Year.

Rotarians, partners and guests celebrated Christmas at a function at the home of Marlene and Bill Hankinson. It was the next best thing to a white Christmas that one could hope for, with the fog blanket lying thick on the hills. The festive spread provided by Kerry, Elaine, Gillian and Pam was greatly appreciated by all and of course Marlene’s Christmas pud hit the spot.

SUNSHINE SAFARI

On Tuesday 6 December, the 2011 Sunshine Safari students visited Maleny (we forgot about the sun in our planning of the day). Sixteen students, under the guidance of Bernie and John and capable helpers, arrived at 12 noon. A number of Rotarians assisted Deb with the serving of lunch, and thank you for your help.

Inbound and outbound students were from Sweden, Japan, Germany, France, Austria and Australia”.

According to Anderson Consulting Worldwide, around 90% of the professionals they tested got all questions wrong, but many preschoolers got several correct answers. Anderson Consulting says this conclusively disproves the theory that most professionals do not have the brains of a four-year-old.

Reports
Brian D : needs numbers for Christmas Party ASAP. Organisers are preparing own catering and drinks, about $25 per head. (Optional) bring a pressie for under $10.

Pres Greg: announced that Secretary Karen will have a heavy workload with also being the President elect, therefore Lionel T has graciously stepped up to be assistant Secretary commencing in the new year.

Treasurer Jeff: we are in good shape but anticipate heavy expenses coming up in the coming month.

Angela G: Malcolm B is leading on the Christmas Carols; Jim A is leading on the Street Carnival, (Board approved a price increase for the food items for the carnival only);  Board approved $500 towards brain research by a donation to the No Brainer Ball; a cheque to be presented to Maleny High School for the first of our three year commitment; Lloyd L is taking lead on the repair to the Rotary badge for the footbridge over the Obi Obi; Marek Malter has offered a space next to the Pharmacy for our Rotary Sausage Sizzle from March 2012; Rick V is taking the lead on the doors for the Community Centre and Jim A is taking the lead for PYOP. There will be a music festival in 2012 with Rotary offered the job of catering for the fans.

Ric T: no international news but reminded all of the next meeting at Wild Rocket@ Misty’s, with bus leaving RSL at 6 pm, cost $25 per head with drinks at own cost.

Discussion about how much was raised at Polio Plus night. Bernice and Sherry to submit expenses before Jeff C can determine overall proceeds of the night.

Sgt Session: insightful, creative but totally untrue fines dished out by Sgt Pat K. While blanket fines are not allowed, all those paid up who had failed to congratulate Ric T for his appointment of PE for 2013-14. Heads and tails winner was.... a winner! Jim A paid for a commercial announcement for little used jeans and a spare test match seat.

Guest speaker Keith Rogers then gave an informative yet highly entertaining session on the history of brewing in Australia, starting from the situation in England in the 1780; covering the local problems with materials for most of the 1800's; the establishment of many well known breweries dung that period; the development of malting, hop production and yeast control; the arrival of refrigeration and lager brewing.

The 20th century saw the foundation of Carlton and United Breweries and its progress to the largest brewery in Australia and, at its peak, the 4th largest in the world. Its world position has since declined as other brewers have expanded greatly in developing countries; its takeover by SAB Millar is imminent.

A number of curious facts and figures were included and delivered with his usual wry, dry and laconic style.

Rick V (ADO) then provided a vote of thanks and handed back to the Duty Officer (yes Keith R again) to close the meeting with some last minute parish notices.

LAST WEEK’S MEETING
President Greg opened our special Polio Fund Raiser and welcomed members, partners and guests. The meeting started with a screening of the 7:30 Report segment on Sir Clem Renouf and the start of the Rotary End Polio campaign. After a delicious Thai supper, prepared by Sherry and helpers, a raffle of donated goods was held. This raised $193 and the funds were enhanced by an anonymous donation of $100 from a former member. President Greg then presented Sherry with a bottle of wine in appreciation of her efforts.

After the screening of a second film about ending polio, our guest speaker Cathy Newman was introduced. Cathy is the Convenor of the Post Polio Support Group of the Sunshine Coast. The Group has 22 active members and 12 others who have dificulties atending meetings. There are similar groups along the coastal fringe from Cairns to the Gold Coast.

The Group has been set up to help past polio patients with the problems that beset them as they get older - active people becoming disabled again. She believes that overcoming the virus is such a struggle that the survivors age prematurely. Her own experience was a total burn out 10 years ago which forced her premature retirement.

She described the history of polio treatment in Australia and the beneficial effects of the vaccines which ridded the country of the virus. She warned however that the virus is only one international passenger away and urged that all children continue to be immunised. She commended Rotary on its efforts to rid the world of the virus.

Sherry W gave a heartfelt vote of thanks.

Meeting opened at 18.57 by President Greg who mentioned that he had attended a very interesting awards night at the Maleny High school and also a sporting club function. He also said that Terry S had moved to Golden Beach.

Business:
 John W presented to the Club a beautifully made cabinet for the storage of the Presidents collars.
 A Rotary tie was presented to Brian D in appreciation for the work that he did on the Club's bye-laws and constitution.
 The acting treasurer Jim A assured the members that we still have money in the bank.
 Deb L gave her report on youth.
 Chris B informed us that several candidates are in the pipeline - (like Gaddafi?).
 Brian K confirmed that this year's Christmas Party will be held atthe Bill H estate.
 Brian A gave a report on the calendar sales.
 Angela G spoke about a collection for women in PNG and also asked for more volunteers for a sausage sizzle at the markets on Sunday 13th.
 Mike G went through the planning for the Thai fundraiser night on 16th Nov. Andy S will donate prizes for the raffle/auction.
 Mike G also gave reports on the District Seminar at Bribie Island, on polio eradication and on the global poverty program.

A Catholic Priest, an Indian Doctor, a Chinese Businessman, and an Aussie Bricklayer, were waiting one morning for a particularly slow group of golfers in front of them.

The Aussie fumed, 'What's with those bastards? We must have been waiting for fifteen minutes!'

The Indian Doctor chimed in, 'I don't know, but I'm losing my patience!'

The Chinese Businessman called out 'Move it, time is money!'

The Catholic Priest said, 'Here comes George the greens keeper. Let's have a word with him.'

'Hello, George!', said the Catholic Priest, 'What's wrong with that group ahead of us? They're rather slow, aren't they?'

Apologies for the sparseness of these notes but the absence of The Scribe did not immediately register. President Greg opened the meeting and asked for reports.

Brian A gave details of the Melbourne Cup trifecta and the problems with low ticket sales; over 700 tickets were unsold. Fortunately the winning ticket was amongst that number resulting in a profit for the Club of over $2,000. Whether to continue this activity next year will be debated by the Board.

Rick V had proposed to the Mary Cairncross Park Committee that Rotary should undertake a specific "major" project rather than the routine weeding and morning tea working bees. With his PR hat on, he explained how he was getting on with the Range News.

Chris B spoke about membership, the No Brainer Ball and other topics before getting in his plug for the RSL's Woodstock Night.

Angela G reported that Lloyd L was liaising with the Showground Committee about replacing the Rotary wheel on the Obi bridge.

Brian K told of an approach by Glass House for a joint clubs meeting with ourselves and Caboolture on 14 Nov. It was agreed to run an extra sausage sizzle on 13th Nov at the RSL markets. Brian asked his committee to meet at 6:00pm on 9 Nov to discuss the Christmas arrangements.

Bill H stepped into the breach as stand in Sergeant and managed to empty some pockets. Tony Holmes won a used scratchy and would no doubt like it replaced!

President Greg opened the meeting by welcoming Jan Lawton from Woombye/Palmwoods Club attending to spruik tickets ($29) for the National Finals of Rotary’s Storm the Stage competition for young performers at the Brisbane Powerhouse on 27 November; and potential new member Kiwi (but we won’t hold that against him) Gary Brown. Greg also welcomed our speaker for the evening, Pantea Beigi and partners present.

Directors reported including:
1. Bernice (reporting in place of Ric who was spending 3 weeks with his wife trying to explain why he now had two dogs) about International’s plans for Thai night on 16 November to raise funds for Polio Plus.

2. Brian K (in Deb’s absence) about the progress of new building at the MSHS and hopes that the Club can help with construction of new pathways to the new building; and also awards night which Pres Greg will be attending on Thursday.

3. Charlotte seeking vocational award nominations.

4. Brian K (again) spruiking the No Brainer’s Ball and recommending that the Board agree to buy a table of 8 as a donation. Xmas party is on 14 December and from 21st the Club will take 3-week break.

5. Angela thanked members for completing projects while she was away; shared information about offer of Marek Malter to relocate the sausage sizzle because of work to Community Centre to his private land adjacent to the pharmacy; advertised a request for volunteers for tree planting at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre on 29 Oct from 10 to noon. Angela also shared the intoxicating secret of a long and happy marriage!

6. Brian A sought assistance with the sales of Melbourne Cup tickets and calendars.

7. Greg in place of Rick on PR reported that Rick was disappointed with his efforts to get publicity in the Range News, though there had been publicity in HT and the Sports and Rec. newsletter.

8. Mike G reported on the sad funeral of a great Caloundra Club Rotarian Jim Adam who had died while on a Rotary project in the Solomon’s. He advised that if anyone made a donation to TRF for polio this week they would be awarded double points and encouraged members to attend the TRF seminar on 6 Nov. Mike urged the club to think about a TRF project for funding next year – maybe related to the new building at MSHS.

Stand in sergeant Pat did the usual extraction of gold??? coins including an incendiary joke and Geoff won the scratchy.

Brian K innovatively introduced our keynote speaker, Pantea Beigi, a current Peace Scholar at the University of Queensland. (Mike G – have you removed Pantea’s photo from under your pillow yet?!). Pantea engaged us with the fascinating details of the road from her experiences of war and deprivation of human rights in Iran in her youth, to her role in 2009 in acting as the conduit for people in Iran drawing the world’s attention to the activities of an oppressive regime in that country following the controversial elections; and now the privilege of a Rotary Peace Scholarship.

Pantea shared that despite high educational standards in Iran for both men and women and the involvement of women in government, a woman was valued at only half that of a man and laws were so unpredictable from day to day that women could be arrested for simply wearing a scarf of a particular colour. Pantea confirmed that she would be arrested if she returned to her homeland.

Having emigrated to the USA as a teenager, Pantea’s interest in equity and human rights led her to work with the Peace Jam Foundation in Colorado addressing the scourge of social and economic injustice affecting underprivileged young people worldwide. She also gained a degree in speech communications and journalism.

Pantea would be travelling next week to undertake a project as part of her Master’s studies, to assess the quality of treatment of Iranian refugees in Turkey. On her return in March she would continue her studies and hoped to extend into a PhD researching the impact of new communications and social media in advancing understanding of peace and contributing to methods to resolving conflict that avoided the use of arms. This is particularly topical and relevant following the impact of social media in the “Arab Spring” events

In thanking Pantea for her address to the Club, Angela expressed how in awe Club members were of her courage and contributions at only 29 years of age in supporting and protecting individuals in Iran by giving them a voice that informed the world about democratic and human rights violations in Iran and the need for new approaches to achieving peace. The Club wished her well and urged her to maintain contact and hopefully address a RYPEN event being organised by Brian K.

It’s gone. No, not Reg, the Volvo - it’s been sold. After 30 years and 300,000 kms,and at June’s insistence, Reg was forced to sell it. They now drive something Japanese. How sad.

Partners' Night at Maleny Hotel at 6:30 for 7:00pm. Guest speaker will be Pantea Beigi. Pantea is an Iranian-American Human Rights Advocate, born and raised during the 1980s revolution and war in Iran. She has served as an AmeriCorps member for Colorado based PeaceJam Foundation, where she worked with a number of Nobel Peace Laureates to address conditions of social and economic injustice faced by underprivileged youth populations across the globe. She assists 2003 Nobel Peace Laureate, Dr. Shirin Ebadi in her efforts on behalf of Iranian citizens and helped protect Ebadi and her clients during the December 2008 attacks on human rights workers in Iran. In June 2009 shortly after the controversial elections in Iran, Pantea conducted routine interviews with many news outlets, providing human rights updates regarding what later became known as the"Green Movement" in Iran. She holds a Bachelors Degree in Speech Communications with a Journalism minor and is a Rotary Foundation World Peace Fellow for the Master of International Studies in Peace and Conflict Resolution at the University of Queensland, Australia.

LAST WEEK’S MEETING
The meeting opened with Chris Brooker advising of a flyover of new Air Force planes on Friday morning and Brian Allen desperately calling for sellers for the Melbourne Cup trifecta tickets.

Playing in the background throughout the meeting was a DVD showing the Tiber Toga production, which was the theme for the night. Angela G introduced the producer of the play, Bob Hall, as ‘Hail Caesar’. Bob then gave us an insight into the trials and tribulations of organising such a production from the original concept to the final summing up of the finances. The writer, the composer, the venue, the costume makers, the set makers, the cast, the financial backers, the publicists, the many gofers all were covered in Bob’s very interesting address.

The amazing aspect of the whole exercise was how the people of Maleny, not only the Rotary club members, got behind the play as a cohesive group to bring the thing to a successful conclusion.

Financially the outcome was $5000 donated to RAWCS, $3900 to Ebenezer Trust, $13700 to the Foundation and $1127 to the RAWCS project in Gizo.

The other highlight of the meeting was the presentation of PHF’s to Bob Hall, John Cundill and Paul Coppens in recognition of their outstanding contribution to Tiber Toga.

Worth a fine, surely?

On a sad note the meeting closed with the advice from Mike G that a member of the Rotary Club of Caloundra, PP Jim Adam, this week passed away suddenly in Gizo only 2 days after arriving to participate in a Rotary project.

A couple lived near the ocean and used to walk the beach a lot.   One summer they noticed a girl who was at the beach almost every day. She wasn't unusual, nor was the travel bag she carried, except for one thing; she would approach people who were sitting on the beach, glance around and then speak to them.

Generally, the people would respond negatively and she would wander off.   But occasionally someone would nod and there would be a quick exchange of money, and something that she carried in her bag. The couple assumed that she was selling drugs, and debated calling the cops, but since they didn't know for sure, they decided to just continue watching her.

After a couple of weeks the wife said, 'Honey, have you ever noticed that she only goes up to people with boom boxes and other electronic devices?' He hadn't and said so. Then she said, 'Tomorrow I want you to get a towel and our big radio and go lie out on the beach. Then we can find out what she's really doing.'

Well, the plan went off without a hitch and the wife was almost hopping up and down with anticipation when she saw the girl talk to her husband and then leave... The man then walked up the beach and met his wife at the road.

'Well, is she selling drugs?' she asked excitedly. 'No, she's not,' he said, enjoying this probably more than he should have. 'Well, what is it then? What does she do?' his wife fairly shrieked.

The man grinned and said, 'She's a battery salesperson.' 'Batteries?' cried the wife. 'Yes!' he replied.

LAST WEEK’S MEETING

A Club Assembly was held at Maleny State High School library. The BBQ was well handled by Brian D and the “Brown-paper-bag” was the work of Lionel T - there were some unkind comments that Brian A would have had the beer colder.

The meeting was opened with thanks to Jim A & Chris B for the excellent catering at ‘Mary Cairncross’.

Club Assembly was introduced by Brian K. who was our ‘Chair’ for the meeting. He started by showing a film clip shown about how Rotary could be very much a “Family Affair” as illustrated by an American Rotary Club.

The meeting discussed:-

Club Constitution & By-Laws
Brian D tabled the existing by-laws with proposed changes that would make them compliant with RI's guidelines and the Office of Fair Trading regulations. The constitution specifies the make up of the Board. These documents will be tabled at the AGM and any proposed amendments are to be put forward in writing at least 2 weeks before that meeting.

Club future membership
After discussion,it was accepted that the figures quoted were only targets. A general request was voiced that we need to look after our new Rotarians better and give them the Rotary knowledge we have gained by experience and make them feel more welcome !!!

Club support for RF
Mike G spoke on this topic. Amongst other fund raising suggestions, he proposed that the Sergeant's fines pool should be broken down as individual contributions to RF. The meeting was against this. After discussion it was decided to leave the ‘fines’ as at present with the individuals option to put in a ‘gold coin’ should they so wish.

Club Board structure
   The incoming President Karen B said she would be using the same board structure as at present.

Club meeting format
A proposal to have the Duty Officer act as the Chairman of the meeting was discussed. It was decided to give this a trial with the proviso that any Duty Officer can relinquish the job to the President if he/she so wishes.

1. THE FOUR WAY TEST FAILED?
I received the following message earlier this week from a member who shall remain nameless:

SEQUEL: The Englishman said: "Come on fellows, lets get some beers in before the Welsh and the Aussies get here!"

2. AN OBITUARY REPRINTED FROM THE TIMES (LONDON)

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:
- Knowing when to come in out of the rain;
- Why the early bird gets the worm;
- Life isn't always fair;
- and maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge). His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place.

Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate: teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, by his wife, Discretion, by his daughter, Responsibility, and by his son, Reason.

He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers;

Someone Else Is To Blame
I'm A Victim

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.

COMMUNITY SERVICE
The Rotary seats by the High School and the Uniting Church have been attended to by Lionel and Malcolm. Lionel will check those in Montville.

The date for Jim's working bee at Howell's Knob is to be finalised.

The Blackall Range Tourist Association is now involved with the Bald Knob sign, in addition to the Council and Main Roads.

Volunteers are needed for the Mary Cairncross BBQ on 8 Oct.

Bernice outlined the arrangements and timing for Relay for Life on 8/9 Oct.

INTERNATIONAL
An International Night is being organised for 16 Nov in aid of Polio Plus.

The committee is looking for a suitable project to support in The Solomons and might invite Trevor Taylor to talk at a meeting. Brian D asked that consideration be given to the Handicapped Children's Centre in Honiara to which the Club had made a donation some years ago.

YOUTH
InterAct are selling their raffle tickets at Maleny Market as well as cooking a pancake brekky once a month. Their AGM is due on 11 Oct.

They plan to make a donation on the last day of term to the New Building Fund.

VOCATIONAL
3 vocational activities are being planned. There will be a joint meeting with Nambour 76 in February, a possible visit to Zender's gluten free production facility and a Maroochydore River cruise.

CLUB
The meetings of 19 and 26th Oct will be Partners' Nights.

Sergeant Rick had some difficulty making his voice heard and getting some of his arbitrary fines to stick! Charlotte won the heads and tails and $3 on the scratchy!

Sherry W eloquently introduced our own John Whan to give his life story as "A Humble Woodworker". John outlined his varied work experience through office boy, apprentice cabinetmaker, wood carver, milk vendor, "professional" snooker player, carpenter, shipwright, builder, joinery contractor, furniture restorer to furniture and joinery maker. John started work in 1947 and began his apprenticeship shortly thereafter. He changed jobs regularly adding to his skills base before going into partnership as a builder.

He next set up his own workshop in Newmarket where his biggest job was to install the pews at St Peter's Lutheran College. These have survived the wear and tear of future generations including Chris B's daughters! In 1978 he acquired a Mercedes Tourer and set off for the UK and Ireland and worked in furniture restoration, carving and gilding.

In 1980 he moved to Maleny where he built a house and workshop. He sold his business in 2004 and now has a small workshop under his house, where he can sometimes hide. John presented this enjoyable talk with considerable humour.

Keith gave the vote of thanks.

LAST WEEK’S MEETING

Although only few in numbers, but loud in voice, President Greg call us to order at 7.00pm for a quick informative meeting. Alternate drops of steak and mushroom sauce and chicken parmesan were quickly served and eaten with a considerable time for fellowship.

President Greg then moved into Directors reports as follows:

• An international night is being organised for 16 Nov in aid of Polio Plus

• Helpers are required to take down the Calendar Photos on Tuesday 4 Oct. at 9.00am at Maple 3. Come and have coffee on Lionel.

• Bike Ed in Maleny has been completed. Thanks for all who helped.

• Two students nominated by Maleny Rotary will be attending the Science Experience.

• A vocational visit to the Caloundra Air Museum is being investigated.

• The final meeting of Splendour in the Grass was held to discuss any future call if asked to participate.
Minutes will be circulated in due course.

• 70th anniversary of the gifting of land for Mary Cairncross Park is on 18 Oct. Maleny Rotary is running the lunch time BBQ.

• Club Assembly on 12 Oct at Maleny High with a BBQ meal at $10.

• The Christmas Carols and Street Carnival are in the planning stages for the first week in December.

Sergeant Rick, after a very low key introduction, proceeded to extract pain for members' misdemeanors. Brian D was fined for being wounded in the line of fire; Jim A for having a poofy conference bag; Rick for his loud red shirt; Greg S for his new collar put together by Secretary Karen; and Tony H for his complaints!! Sgt Rick has taken to heart the complaint from our ladies about his risqué jokes so Charlotte had one of her own (clean) about married bliss in 1933. Rick V won the heads and tails, but on scratching the card, won nothing to shout the bar.

Our guest speaker Emily Batista was introduced by Director Deb L. Emily is a year 11 student at Maleny High and is in the sea cadets and an Interact Club member. Deb commented on how her self confidence had grown with her involvement in these organisations. Emily attended the recent RYPEN camp at Coolum along with another Maleny Rotary Club nominee Luke Cauley. RYPEN is a program designed to enrich the experiences of young people in our community and demonstrate the qualities of leadership.

Emily told the meeting that the camp really took her out of her comfort zone and built her confidence to handle unexpected situations. She was never bored and has made a new network of friends from different walks of life. Some of her memories will be pretending to be a chicken, an icebreaker exercise for the group and acting out situations which would have made her self conscious. Emily now has the confidence to put her nomination forward to be school captain next year and firmly believes you only get out what you are prepared to put into an opportunity.

LAST WEEK’S MEETING

President Greg welcomed all members. Sherryl G was asked to introduce two rather young visitors- her and Mike’s granddaughters all the way from Eudlo.

President Greg awarded Tony H a Presidential Achievement Award for all the behind the scenes effort he has put into the visioning process. Tony H was visibly moved by the award and the eye catching tie.

Various directors and chair presented summarised reports.

After the meal, Tony H eloquently summarised the vision process from the workshop in Feb through to the current version 5 of the higher level document. He emphasised it (the club leadership plan) as an aspirational document to set the structure and goals in place for later work. It has been cross referenced against the summary of ranked recommendations, which was derived from all the “red dot blue dot” decision procedure. When this has been largely agreed, all members, through their directors will translate the goals and strategies into tasks, activities and actionable items.

Tony H asked for feedback especially about the vision statement, the 7 long term goals and the 4 success factors. These can either be sent to him, through your committee director or to President Greg. Committees can meet separately over the next 2 weeks. All should be finalised during the Assembly on 12 October.

Sergeant session duly fined those who had either dared to delegate duties (to the Sergeant), those with Irish descendents, those arriving late (after the bell) or for other heinous crimes.

President Greg mediated a range of views on the best method for progressing the leadership plan. He closed the meeting by reiterating that he hopes the completion of the vision process, where general consensus will be gained, will assist in the healing process, and that a rebuilding phase for the rest of the year will generate fun and friendship.

POLIO OUTBREAK IN CHINA

The World Health Organisation has just announced that there’s been a polio outbreak in China.[1] Seven cases have been detected – all stemming from Pakistan, one of the four countries where wild poliovirus remains endemic. It’s a timely reminder of how polio anywhere is a threat everywhere, and why now is the time to finish the job, and realise the end of this disease.

To see the end of polio we need to show a groundswell of support across the world, to get our Governments to fully fund the Global Polio Eradication Initiative’s vital work. The good news is that eradication efforts are working. There hasn’t been a polio case in India for 8 months, and there have been almost 50% fewer cases globally in 2011 compared to the same time in 2010.[2] We’re winning the fight – but we won’t be able to finish the job without full funding for the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, which needs a further $590 million.

That’s why we’re campaigning for Australia to be a leader this October, as Perth hosts the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.

The End of Polio campaign is calling on the Australian Government to contribute $50m to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, and to put polio on the CHOGM agenda so other countries can contribute too.

President Greg opened the meeting by introducing our guests from Maleny High school Fran Tickle and the President of their InterAct Club Chelsea Large. He then invited Dick A to assist him in the presentation of a Paul Harris Fellowship to Fran Tickle for her exceptional work in helping with the formation of the InterAct Club and her continuing guidance and contribution to the ongoing success of that Club. This presentation received a standing ovation from those present.

President G announced that Ric T had been invited to join the Board as International Director and that Charlotte G had kindly agreed to look after Vocational Service.

Jeff C reported on the financial situation which will return to normal when the funds are received from Splendour in the Grass.

Chris B, emulating Pooh Ba from The Mikado,reported that:

- Town seats…Lionel will organise working bee via email when ready.

- Howells Knob Gazebo…Jim will organise working bee via email when ready. Council has given permission for work to proceed. Jim will tell you the story over a beer.

- Landsborough/Maleny Rd Lookout…Have contacted Andrew Powell's office to establish responsibility. May be a joint Council/MRD grey area. Have requested Andrew Powell's office supply name of contact within MRD for us to talk with.

- Calendar…Sales commenced.

- Christmas Carols…joint venture with RSL and Maleny Singers due in December this year. Quite successful last year even with torrential rain.

- Maleny Precinct…May take up to 6 years before anything substantial there.

- Relay for Life…8/9th October. Club has donated $1000 to sponsor a Rotary team. Believe all names of starters are in.

- Melbourne Cup sweep…Brian Allen to organise on his return.

- Sunshine Coast Riding for Disabled…Received letter requesting support for purchase of 24 acres for $530,000 at North Arm. Advised we couldn’t assist at
this time.

- St Vincent de Paul Society, Maleny…Received letter from Jack Wilcox requesting financial and hands-on support for two projects.
A >> Elderly couple trying to remain in house which is approaching being uninhabitable.
B >> Single mum trying to pay off mortgage and remain in house which requires some TLC.
Agreed to $500 per project to purchase material and asked that Jack approach Apex to be main organiser of project work and to contact us when help required.

- Mary Cairncross 70th Anniversary…8th October. Assistance with BBQ from 11ish. MC Committee and/or Council to supply all requirements and we supply BBQ, gas and volunteers.

- Maleny State School Centenary..April 2012. Committee formed within P & C but this is a huge undertaking and they will require help. Brian to arrange for Rick Page (Pres P & C) to be guest speaker at some stage to inform us of assistance required. To be hands-on, not monetary.

This was followed by a mercifully brief pickpocketing session from the Sergeant.

Our first Guest Speaker Fran Tickle was introduced by Dick Andrew. Fran, our newest Paul Harris Fellow, spoke about her involvement with the Interact Club at the Maleny State High School and her pride and pleasure in having seen it flourish to an active organization over the past few years.

Fran had an opportunity to visit the Solomon Islands in 2005 and saw for herself the limited resources available for the children in the school library at a school in Honiara. She set about sourcing school books and other equipment to transport to the school through the Rotary Donation in Kind program. Fran saw an opportunity to become involved with youth, and has been a great mentor for the Interact students which is demonstrated by the respect shown to her from the students both at school and out in the wider community.

We are truly fortunate to have Fran working at the local school.

Chelsea Large, a year eleven student at Maleny High School, was introduced by Brian King. She spoke of her experience during the Rotary Adventure in Citizenship week in Canberra. Chelsea visited Parliament House, The Australian War Memorial, Australian Institute of Sport, and travelled to Duntroon on the Canberra Raiders Bus.

The experience has improved her confidence and social skills. She is to be congratulated on her election as the Interact Representative on the District Interact Club.

LAST WEEK’S MEETING

President Greg opened the meeting by introducing our guest IPDG Eric Wood and asking him to address the members. Eric presented the Club with several copies of a magazine entitled ‘Humanity in Motion’ which outlines the many facets of RI activities throughout the world. He requested that members take copies & distribute them throughout the community.

A highlight of the night was the presentation by Eric to Chris Brooker of an award entitled ‘Club Builder Award’. This award is approved by the President of RI and is given to only one Rotarian per district per year for outstanding service to Rotary – well done Chris - you’re our District's top bloke in 2010/11. This must be one of the very few occasions that the recipient was lost for words!

Directors’ reports informed us that Bike Ed will be conducted next week (numbers please to Chris), that the 5th Wednesday of any month will be a partners’ night, that Interact raised $1,000 at their Bunnings sausage sizzle last weekend, $500 of which will help defray the costs of sending 2 students to the NYSF experience. Our Christmas party will be held December 14th and that a Club Assembly is scheduled for 21st September.

Deb L. gave a very interesting talk on her involvement with youth activities both in Montana & Maleny. She came from a large family of 12 children & devoted much of her time in Montana to working with children with special needs – 3 years were spent in a kindy environment and 6 in a high school addressing youth education. She is heavily involved with our Interact Club & is delighted that membership numbers have climbed from 6 three years ago to 22 in 2011. She praised the efforts of the Interact members & finished by saying that many of them in time would make great Rotarians.

The meeting closed with PDG Eric encouraging members to give a thought to attending the RI Convention in Thailand in 2012.

LAST WEEK’S MEETING

This was the official visit of District Governor for 2011/12 Carolyn Krueger who attended with husband Egon. President Greg and the Board had a productive meeting with the DG before the meeting. Other visitors for the evening were Assistant Governor Will Waterford and his wife Donna, PP Roger Wright from RC of Mooloolaba and his daughter Jodie, co-owner of Pomodora's Restaurant.

Director’s Reports:

Karen called for team members for the Relay for Life team for the October event.

Chris B talked about progress with the lookout on Maleny-Landsborough Road - as well as advertising the upcoming RSL Scottish Night Friday 2 September. Calls were made for the Bike Education program at Maleny next week.

Mike G gave a TRF report – Foundation Seminar 6 November, St Columban’s College. The Annual Programs Fund and polio fundraiser was set for 19 October.

Brian King introduced the new Interact Treasurer and gave a report on the Science Experience. He said the RYPEN camp was a success with a wonderful group of young people and leaders. 36 young people had attended and Chris B was thanked for driving the bus.

DG Carolyn addressed the club and quoted her favourite Rotary saying: “Rotary gives ordinary people opportunities to achieve and see extraordinary things”. Carolyn then proceeded to describe some of the experiences she and Egon had on their official visit last month to Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Nauru.

These included:
• Port Moresby - where they had lunch with the acting Prime Minister.
• Mt Hagen where they were taken on a 2 1/2 hour drive out of Hagen where peace talks were happening between warring tribes.
• Goroka – a bumpy journey in a police vehicle from Mt Hagen after trouble with airlines.

• Lae – more bumpy roads to Lae and the premier Rotary event of the year in those parts – the Black Tie Ball where Carolyn was tightly wrapped in a grass skirt and attendees parted with a lot of Kina to buy a stuffed dog and a signed rugby jersey – bringing in approx. 130,000 Kina for the night. Carolyn made the most of sitting next to the General Manager of Air Nuigini to appeal for help with fares to bring one person from each PNG/Solomon/Nauru club down for the 2012 District Conference. She would like all Queensland clubs to support this goal financially.

• Madang – they visited a Centre for the Deaf where sewing machines from DIK provided a great self-help project for women. Also visited a school for the blind and hospitals.
• Kokopo – where the amazing President Arlu Stephenson has almost all members of her family as members of her club. They visited a hospital which had been painted by the club and featured cartoon characters around the walls for the children’s ward and bible stories in adult wards.
• Bulolo – a 4 hour drive from Lae – met the 2 members Brian and Andrew who are the stalwarts of this small club. The community has been severely affected by ethnic cleansing activities and many families are living under makeshift tarpaulins which are in need of replacement.
• Gizo – Carolyn described a hospital built with Japanese aid which will require a lot of resources to have it up and running.
• Nauru- Carolyn inducted 3 Honorary members and visited the phosphate mine.

Mike G gave the vote of thanks to Carolyn and President Greg invited members to share more fellowship with our guests after the meeting.

LAST WEEK’S MEETING

The meeting was opened by President Greg with 22 members present. He announced with regret that Tony L had resigned. He also noted that the numbers due to attend the DG's visit were disappointingly low and asked members to recheck their availability.

There was a Special General Meeting to elect a President Elect for 2011/12. Karen Binstead and Lynda Ratcliffe were the nominees. Following a secret ballot, Karen Binstead was duly nominated to general acclaim.

Committee Reports:

Jeff C confirmed that the Splendour in the Grass returns to the Club would be around $5,000.00.

Angela G reported that the Board had approved $1,000 to enter a Club team in Relay for Life on 8-9th Oct. A show of hands indicated that there would be sufficient numbers to support such a team. Greg Ivey of Mary Cairncross had requested a working bee on 10th Sep; a maximum of 8 volunteers will be needed
from 8:30 to 12:30pm - those requiring new gardening gloves and an excuse to avoid the weekend shopping to apply.
Angela also had some special Antiguan first day covers which she would give to the Club for auction at a future event.

Brian K asked the members of his committee to meet at 6:00pm on 7th Sep to sort out the guest speaker programme.

Mike G announced that 24th Oct was Polio Day and that the International Committee planned to hold a fund raiser close to that date. He also said that the Board had approved a further donation to a Rotary programme of $2,000 and that he would be allocating another $2,000 to the International Global Grant,
possibly to the Kinross Low Cost Housing Project.

Brian A said that the calendars had arrived safely and that he has arranged for distribution in his absence. Lionel T was liaising with the Range News about the official launch on 10th Sep.

Chris B issued a promo for the RSL's Scottish Night on 2nd Sep.

The Sergeant laid into his audience like Samson with the jawbone of an ass (Judges 15:16). The principal victim was Keith R for the recent elevation of the English Test team.

The guest speaker was member Lionel Tilley who gave an outline of the occurrence of bowel cancer amongst the Australian population, advising that it kills more females than does breast cancer and more males than prostate cancer. Of the mortalities, 60% are male and 40% female with a much younger demographic now contracting the condition. It is the easiest cancer to correct provided it is detected in the early stages, that is why Rotary is so keen on the annual check using BowelScan. A late detection will result in death in more than 90% of cases where the cancer has spread throughout the body. The Government project to send kits to those of the population 55,60 and 65 years of age is not a scan as such – just a check which can miss many bowel cancers as they can develop rapidly.

Record numbers of kits were sold in the Sunshine Coast region this year (5,700) with Maleny having the third highest sales with 488.

He also gave a brief snapshot of his working life telling us he started by picking onions in the Lockyer Valley as a 10 year old to earn pocket money; then after a formal education in agriculture, spent 3 years in PNG as an agricultural officer. This was a ‘magical’ experience for a young man where he would not see another white man for 2-3 months at a time when on patrol through the highlands and speaking only pidgin English. A return to Australia saw him employed in the sugar industry by a research and development organisation called BSES. He stayed with them for 35 years as an extension officer and latterly in management in towns from Mossman to Ingham to Bundaberg and Mackay. Research projects were undertaken in the area of irrigation efficiency, green cane harvesting and weed control.

A phase down period saw him employed as a consultant by the Sugar Research and Development Corporation for part time work for 3 years after which he retired to Maleny.

Meeting was opened by President Greg with a big congrats to Sergeant Rick for gaining sponsors to the Rotary website.

Committee Reports:

Chris B reminded members of the passing of Ray Burgess & Vietnam Veterans Day at RSL tomorrow.

President Greg advised that Splendour in the Grass returns to be in the vicinity of $5000.00 per club.

Angela G asked for interest in the up & coming Relay for Life but interest appeared limited regarding the entry of a team for the relay.

Brian K reminded members of the upcoming partner’s night on the 31/8/11 with the DG.

Sergeant’s session was held and all innocent parties were dutifully fined and guilty parties were awaiting the outcome of their court cases.

Jim A gave two talks for the price of one, now there’s some cost cutting measures for you. Firstly, on Rotary Youth Exchange, where Jim outlined the benefits, costs, responsibilities and pleasures of hosting an overseas student. Jim then took us for a journey, be it briefly, through the macadamia industry in Australia. I’m sure we all learned plenty and a big thanks to Jim for sharing some of the history of this industry with us.

Next week our special guest speaker will be our very own Lionel Tilley talking about bowel scan. Look forward to seeing you all there.

ROTARY AND THE VIETNAM WAR

This week saw two military related milestones...one absolutely huge and another not so big but significant in it’s own way.

August 15th was VJ or VP Day...Victory over Japan or Victory in the Pacific...basically the end to WW11 for Australia. Unfortunately it passed without a whimper in the press or elsewhere.

August 18th was Vietnam Veterans Day which was named as such by the Australian Government on the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan. This battle was a decisive turning point in the Viet Nam operation.

Now as to Rotary’s involvement in the Vietnam War. The (I believe) combined Rotary Clubs of the Gold Coast and the GC City Council made available to every serviceman who was wounded in the conflict a free family two week holiday at the Gold Coast. This holiday was taken by every serviceman who was entitled to it. Not a lot is known of this gesture but to my mind it is a real Rotary moment that should be enshrined in history for all to remember.

At that stage, the moratorium marches were in full flight and the Government of the day was under intense pressure to withdraw the troops and a lot of the returning diggers were advised not to wear their uniforms and/or ribbons in the street. The ordinary serviceman was definitely not supported by the majority of the general public and in the middle of this, Rotary and the GC Council held out the hand of friendship and support.

Like I said, definitely a Rotary moment to be cherished.

LAST WEEK’S MEETING

The meeting was opened by Sergeant Ric who invited PDG Mike G to address the Club. Vice President PDG Mike advised that President Elect Greg S had been appointed by the Board to assume the role of Club President following the casual vacancy resulting from Mike Keane’s resignation from the Club. PDG Mike then inducted PE Greg as President to the congratulations of all members present.

Secretary Karen advised receipt of a thank you card from PDG Peter Wilkinson and Kay for the Club’s tribute on their recent loss of Phil.

Treasurer Jeff reminded ‘stragglers’ that Club Dues are overdue and gave a brief report on the Club’s assets and liabilities (listed below). Jeff also advised that about $5000 will be distributed to each of the three Clubs assisting with the Rotary food stall at Splendour in the Grass.

Community Service Director Angela advised that Chris B. is the Deputy Director(applause). Angela also advised that repairs were planned for the seats in Maple Street; Howell’s Knob was being monitored for any renovation requirements, and that the layby on the Landsborough-Maleny Road was being considered for some renovation in conjunction with the SC Council.

New Generations Director Deb L. advised that Bike Ed was progressing satisfactorily; that two students from MSHS had been selected to attend the Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment (RYPEN) during August. For details see the District Directory, page 58. Chris B. advised that the proposed Bike Ed at Montville Primary School was on hold due to other Department of Education workloads on the Teachers.

Club Service Director Brian K. advised that the DG’s Official Visit is still scheduled for the 31st August at Pomodora’s Restaurant in Maleny. The Guest Speaker program is being coordinated by PDG Brian D. and any suggestions with relevant contact details should be passed to him. Thanks were also given to the progressive dinner hosts (Atkinson’s, Nieper’s, Doyle’s households) for last Saturday evening’s function. Brian K. also asked members to pass any information for the Club calendar to Secretary Karen, as well as advising that the Club was purchasing an external drive to store the Club history and archives electronically.

District TRF Coordinator PDG Mike advised that D9600 had achieved its 2010-2011 commitment of contributing US $100 for the Every Rotarian Every Year (EREY) program. He advised that RC Maleny was the largest contributor in the District (at over US $400 per member) and that this had been largely due to the fundraising effort through Tiber Toga. Thanks were again expressed to all those members who were able to contribute their help to that project. Regarding Polio eradication Mike advised that India was a success story with only one case being reported so far in 2011. However, Pakistan remains an issue.

President Greg then advised that the Board was considering two proposals re the regular Club meeting. He also advised that the Club subsidised meals last year to about $2000. Consequently the long-standing Club policy of requiring members who do not advise an absence to the Secretary prior to the meeting to pay the meal cost would now have to be enforced. President Greg also advised that all internal emails should go through the appropriate Director or the Secretary rather than to the collective membership.

Lionel T. advised that he had put a request for the Board to consider a motion to review the basis of funding Community Service projects relative to International Service projects. Similar sentiments had been expressed in other member's emails circulated last week.

Sergeant Ric then conducted a brief session making several erroneous assertions as to the activities of various members, producing a minimal Return on Investment (ROI) in financial terms. He then related a joke about a dutiful son, and conducted Heads and Tails which Deb L. won.

A brief interlude was followed by an almost briefer guest speaker appearance by PDG Tony H. who described the District structure, the provisions of Incorporation and the requirements of the standard Rotary Club Constitution and Bylaws. He then linked them to the requirements for the District and Clubs to have a Leadership Plan, and referred to the Club Visioning process and its progress within the Club. He also distributed brief summary sheets of the key points as well as the outline of the structure, roles, tasks for each Committee and an Action Plan sheet that all Directors are currently developing with their teams for discussion at the next Club Assembly.

Secretary Karen then reaffirmed, for members, The 4-Way Test of the things we think, say or do. (See page 61 in the District Directory).

President Greg announced that there is a Board meeting on 22 August and that a Club Assembly would follow early in September. He also stated that the meeting on 24 August will be a special meeting to elect a President Elect for the Rotary year 2011-2012. He then thanked Members for their attendance and participation and closed the meeting (on time).

BIKE ED (WITH THANKS TO CHRIS B)

Bike Ed this week for Maleny State School Form 5A was a most enjoyable experience. The students were co-operative, keen, polite, didn’t play up too much and were a pleasure to instruct. OK, a couple tested the patience a couple of times but overall they were pretty good.

Monday was the usual with checking bikes and helmets then we had a couple of minor exercises. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday were increasingly difficult with Thursday being devoted to intersections and roundabouts. At the end of each day if we have time, there are slow races, slaloms and other fun type activities. The prizes in the slow races for coming last, which is really first, is an old mango or whatever we can scrounge. The students take it all in good fun. Even had a visit from a SCRC road safety bloke who was quite impressed with our program. He didn’t promise but hinted he may be able to get us some funds to cover our annual expenses.

On Friday we set out the lower oval like a small town with intersections, pedestrian crossings, stop/give way signs, roundabout, parked cars etc. and just kept running them around it. At the end of all that we give out the certificates and adjourn for a well deserved coffee.

Bike Ed is probably (apart from Mary Cairncross) one of our longest running programmes with eight of us involved this time (22% of the Club). This year we had a student whose mum did it many years ago.

30 members present plus Ric T's son Scott as a guest. Angela G proposed that the Club should send a message of sympathy to the RC of Oslo following the recent tragic loss of life. Sherryl G then presented to the Club two awards from RI - WELL DONE.

President Mike particularly thanked Sherry W and her team for the great work done at Splendour in the Grass. The anticipated profit will be about $5,000 per Club. Sherry W then spoke of her views of this Project. Whilst the catering side had run well, she had been very upset that the promise made to the teenagers who volunteered of access to the concerts after their shifts was not honoured. She believed that this behaviour was unethical and should be the subject of a formal complaint. President Mike said that he would take this up with Rick V.

Sergeant Ric as usual extracted some dubious fines from members.

The Club was privileged to have member Roly Neiper, Chairman of LiveCorp, as the first guest speaker of the year. Roly spoke about the background to the recent banning of the live export trade to Indonesia. He covered why this had occurred and the ongoing damage to the cattle industry in Northern Australia. He explained what steps were available to meet the new requirements of the government.

It was a very interesting and frank assesment of an industry that has been hung out to dry by the federal government. Roly handled a series of testing questions from members in a very professional manner. This concluded a most interesting presentation.

PRESIDENT MIKE'S ANNOUNCEMENT

President Mike announced that he was, due to personal reasons, relinquishing his post a president and was also resigning from the club. After some discussion Tony Holmes rose and thanked Mike for his efforts on behalf of the club and stated the club's unanimous feelings that we were sorry to see him go.

Mike was then given a round of applause.

STOP PRESS PROGRESSIVE DINNER

Great company, delicious food, a fine(!) wine bar and safe driving and a dive act all combined to make the event most memorable. Jim & Elaine hosted nibbles & soups presented in cobb loaves (& quick peeks at the TV to catch the rugby score).

On to Roly & Kerry’s where drinks were imbibed (Roly couldn’t

convince anyone that the Rotary wine was anything but paint stripper, so he remains the owner of several bottles of Polio wine). Drinks and lots of conversation, were followed by a delicious meal consisting of several curries. During serving of the meal, Pamela D decided to enliven the evening by attempting a swan dive, with tuck, from the top of the steps. Having only been given a 3 for the dive she lay recumbent upon the carpet whilst her curry commenced to alter the colour of the off white carpet to a decidedly brown curry hue. To the rescue came Sir Galahad Andy S, who hoping to aid the damsel in distress also commenced a dive from the top step only to collide with Beth W on the way down to land upon the ailing Pamela. Beth was knocked sideways into a table on which one Charlotte G was about to commence eating her meal. Charlotte’s meal moved sideways about 3 feet and Beth ended up on her back with a big red scrape near her kidneys. The Niepers turned themselves in instant carpet cleaners, after checking no one wasbadly injured, and everything returned to normal.

Thanks for the show folks.

Malcolm then drove us to Brian and Pamela D’s for lots of cheesy cake desserts & coffee, and plenty more noise and conversation. Overall a most enjoyable evening thanks to our hosts Jim and Elaine, Roly and Kerry and Brian and Pamela. The safe driving of Malcolm B ensured we arrived on time (although some of the ladies wished to linger and natter) and Brian A. kept us well supplied from the brown paper bag. Thanks to Chris B for the loan of the chairs and cutlery.

And as Samuel Pepys would have it – and so to bed!

A MAORI TALE

Kia Ora you fullahs (and gidday dingos)

Three Maori’s and three Australians are travelling by train to the Bledisloe Cup match in Auckland . At the station, the three Maori's each buy a ticket and watch as the three Aussies buy just one ticket between them.

"How are the three of you going to travel on only one ticket bro’?" asks one of the Maori's. "Watch and learn" answers one of the Aussies. They all board the train. The Maori's take their respective seats but
all three Aussies cram into a toilet and close the door behind them. Shortly after the train has departed, the conductor comes around collecting tickets. He knocks on the toilet door and says, "Ticket please."

The door opens just a crack and a single arm emerges with a ticket in hand. The conductor takes the ticket and moves on.

The Maori's see this and agree it was quite a clever idea. So after the game, they decide to go one better on the return trip and save some money (being clever with money, and all that and rather spend it on beer!!).

When they get to the station for the return trip, the Aussies buy a single ticket for the return trip. To their astonishment, the Maori's don't buy a ticket at all!!

"How are you going to travel without a ticket?" says one perplexed Aussie.

"Watch and learn bro, " answer the Maori's .

When they board the train the three Maori's cram into a toilet and soon after the three Aussies cram into another nearby. The train departs.

Shortly afterwards, one of the Maori's leaves the toilet and walks over to the toilet where the Aussies are hiding. He knocks on the door and says:

"Ticket please."

Similar to the game really!

LAST WEEK’S MEETING
Little to report this week. All Directors announced their committee members for the current year; these will be published shortly.

Brian D described the somewhat Byzantine procedures required to change the constitution of RI. He explained how the Council of Legislation worked and how individual Clubs and Districts could table resolutions for consideration, but with scant hope of success.

Brian K tabled the Board's proposals for future meetings which are given in full below. A rather lively discussion occurred in relation to these proposed changes and to how we can enhance our Club’s image within our local community. This is imperative when it comes to attracting new members, as we need to be seen to have locally focused projects and to have fun while performing community
activities.

There was a view expressed that we should also have enjoyment at meetings. This could lead to an improvement in our retention of existing members and also be attractive in recruiting new members.

Unfortunately the outcome of the Vision Meetings appears to have lead to misunderstandings among some members of the Club. It should not be seen as the initiative of the Maleny Rotary Club but as a world wide strategy to improve retention and recruitment of Rotary members.

BOARD PROPOSALS FOR FUTURE CLUB MEETINGS

1st Wednesday of the month
A normal meeting with a guest speaker from the community with meal.

2nd Wednesday of the month
A Board Meeting only (other members welcome). No meal provided.

3rd Wednesday of the month
A normal meeting with a speaker talking about Rotary, or Rotary projects
or "this is my life" from a member. Meal provided.

4th Wednesday of the month
Break out committee meetings and reporting back to the whole Club at the
end of the meeting. These meetings will need a suitable venue.

5th Wednesday of the month (when it occurs)
A social meeting with partners. These will be at various venues. Events
such as a car rally may replace this meeting.

PROPOSAL 2

For meetings at the Maleny Hotel the meals will be main course only with
no dessert. Cost to members $18 - $16 for the meal and $2 covering guests.

** Please can members give feedback on these proposals before 5pm Monday 8
August to President Mike or Brian K - i.e. before the next Board Meeting.

In 1952, Armon M. Sweat, Jr., a member of the Texas House of Representatives, was asked about his position on whiskey. What follows is his exact answer (taken from the Political Archives of Texas):

"If you mean whiskey, the devil's brew, the poison scourge, the bloody monster that defiles innocence, dethrones reason, destroys the home, creates misery and poverty, yea, literally takes the bread from the mouths of little children; if you mean that evil drink that topples Christian men and women from the pinnacles of righteous and gracious living into the bottomless pit of degradation, shame, despair, helplessness, and hopelessness, then, my friend, I am opposed to it with every fiber of my being."

"However, if by whiskey you mean the oil of conversation, the philosophic wine, the elixir of life, the ale that is consumed when good fellows get together, that puts a song in their hearts and the warm glow of contentment in their eyes; if you mean Christmas cheer, the stimulating sip that puts a little spring in the step of an elderly gentleman on a frosty morning; if you mean that drink that enables man to magnify his joy, and to forget life's great tragedies and heartbreaks and sorrow; if you mean that drink the sale of which pours into Texas treasuries untold millions of dollars each year, that provides tender care for our little crippled children, our blind, our deaf, our dumb, our pitifully aged and infirm, to build the finest highways, hospitals, universities, and community colleges in this nation, then my friend, I am absolutely, unequivocally in favor of it."

PRESIDENT MIKE'S MESSAGE
This coming week we have a great opportunity, albeit a challenge, in our
support of the Splendour in the Grass event. Considerable planning by Rick,
and the Team, has ensured that we are off to a good start. There will inevitably
be the unexpected as it is the first time we have ventured to commit to an event
of this scale, however, if we give it our full support we have the opportunity to
bolster our finances in this year, and possibly years to come. As a reminder for
those who will be handling food could you complete the “food handling course” on
http://www.mortonbay.imalert.com.au/. If you have any questions please contact Rick.
On Monday we will have a mini Board meeting to discuss the following items:-
1. Make up of Directors Teams.
2. Discussion on venue, content, frequency and nature of Club Meetings.

LAST WEEK’S MEETING
President Mike opened the meeting and welcomed the 22 members present.
Directors’ and other Reports from the floor included Sherry W, who thanked all
those who helped out with the Maleny Show. President Mike also mentioned that
there would be a brief weekly quiz on the previous week’s Bulletin information.

IPP Rick V. also acknowledged all those who helped with the ‘Up the Tiber’
presentation, as well as Greg S. and all those planning and coordinating our
‘Splendour in the Grass’assistance. Rick then provided additional information
regarding the rosters and parking arrangements for SITG – the organisers of
which are expecting about 30,000 people per day to attend. Rosters are due
out this week so please advise Rick or Sherry if there are any last minute
changes.
Entrance is at Gate 3 (the Suppliers entrance) and we will be issued with an
identity wrist band for our shift.

International report from Lynda R. included an update on Friends of Ebeneezer
School – assistance through RAWCS.

Angela G. gave an update on PR efforts and Range News initiatives now that
Sasha is on board as a journalist.

President Mike then presented IPP Rick with the 2010-11 theme banner and
acknowledged the great year we all had.

Brian D. advised the format for Rotary Information this year and how he will be
sharing tasks around the Club members each week. He then gave an informative
overview of how RI operates and Club and District relationships within the
organisation. Astutely recognising that members had reached a critical point
of information overload, Brian then suggested there would be more exciting
instalments to come in future weeks, and concluded to a round of applause.

Chris B. spoke briefly about Youth on behalf of Deb L.: we have two
participants for RYPEN; Bike Ed will be at Maleny from 8-12 August and
we need several volunteers to assist; Interact Club is still very active.

Treasurer Jeff C. rose to speak but was silenced by President Mike – in favour
of a coffee break. On resumption he advised details of the final Show accounts
– a reasonably healthy return on the Club’s investment.

Greg S. advised he has several future Guest Speakers lined up.

Brian K. indicated that the DG visit scheduled for 31/8 might change to 17/8.
Advice to follow in duecourse. Membership initiatives in train. Club archives
being considered for electronic storage. Meal cost has been resolved.

President Mike advised the next Board meeting is on 25/7. Mike stressed the
need to attract more business leaders to our Club and we must begin to engaging
them.

Sergeant Bill H. then extracted some dubious fines from largely innocent members
and told a reasonably clever joke to which most of the older members could relate.

President Mike then closed the meeting with a reminder that duties for next week’s
meeting would be in the bulletin (hopefully).

A LESSON IN ECONOMICS
THE TAX SYSTEM EXPLAINED IN BEER

Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to
$100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like
this...
The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay $1.
The sixth would pay $3.
The seventh would pay $7.
The eighth would pay $12.
The ninth would pay $18.
The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.
So, that's what they decided to do.
The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the
arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve ball. "Since you are
all such good customers," he said, "I'm going to reduce the cost of your daily
beer by $20".
Drinks for the ten men would now cost just $80.
The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes. So the first
four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free. But what about the
other six men? The paying customers?
How could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his fair
share?
They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that
from everybody's share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each
end up being paid to drink his beer.
So the bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man's bill
by a higher percentage the poorer he was, to follow the principle of the tax
system they had been using. He then proceeded to work out the amounts
he suggested that each should now pay.
And so the fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% saving).
The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33% saving).
The seventh now paid $5 instead of $7 (28% saving).
The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% saving).
The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% saving).
The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% saving).
Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to
drink for free.
But, once outside the bar, the men began to compare their savings.
"I only got a dollar out of the $20 saving," declared the sixth man. He pointed
to the tenth man, "but he got $10!"
"Yeah, that's right," exclaimed the fifth man. "I only saved a dollar too. It's
unfair that he got ten times more benefit than me!"
"That's true!" shouted the seventh man. "Why should he get $10 back, when
I got only $2? The wealthy get all the breaks!"
"Wait a minute," yelled the first four men in unison, "we didn't get anything at all.
This new tax system exploits the poor!"
The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.

The next night the tenth man didn't show up for drinks, so the nine sat down and
had their beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered
something important. They didn't have enough money between all of them for
even half of the bill!

And that, boys and girls, journalists and government ministers, is how our tax
system works.
The people who already pay the highest taxes will naturally get the most benefit
from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they
just may not show up anymore. In fact, they might start drinking overseas, where
the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

We had a very successful Board meeting on Monday where, amongst other things, the continued development of the Vision Project was discussed. The Directors, together with their teams, will identify the ways and means of identifying how we progress to achieve our Critical Success
Factor’s objectives. Once they complete their task they will then report back to the Board and the Board’s recommendations will be passed on to the Club.

Splendour in the Grass is nearly upon us and we need more hands to the pump; could you please look at the roster provide by Geoff and volunteer your time where there are still vacancies? Rick, and the team, have put a lot of work into the planning of this event and its success should generate considerable financial gain to the Club. We need to ensure that our effort is commensurate with the input from the other two clubs.

I have to admit that as a relatively new member to Rotary my knowledge of its organisation and functions is thin, and I suspect that I am not alone. Developing future leaders was also an outcome of the Vision Project and to address this issue Brian Doyle has volunteered his services. This coming Wednesday Brian will give a 5 minute presentation on The Rotary Foundation and on subsequent Wednesdays he will identify a “volunteer” to continue this task. Brian will nominate a subject to ensure continuity of the program.

LAST WEEK’S MEETING

Pres Mike opened the meeting in the usual manner. He reported that at the recent Board meeting the Directors' contributions had helped to make it an encouraging start to his year as President. Mike then
asked the Directors present to give the club a rundown on their position.

Greg S,as Pres Elect, is going to assist the Pres as needs arise.

Angela G,as Community Service Director, is progressing Club projects with the hope of liaising more in the community with the other service clubs.

Treasurer Jeff indicated there will be a substantial profit from the Show. However it is disappointing that members are not sending in meeting apologies and as a result the Club has been paying for the meals ordered on their behalf.

THIS MEANS IF YOU FAIL TO ATTEND A MEETING & HAVE NOT APOLOGISED YOU WILL HAVE TO PAY FOR THE MEAL.

David E,as Vocation Director, is hoping to work more closely with the schools.

Lynda R, as International Director, has a good band of workers & they intend meeting regularly for discussions to progress International understanding.

Debra L, as New Generations Director, is seeking assistance with Interact, RYLA, & Bike Ed.

Bernice, as Membership Director, has a couple of prospects for new members.

Our assistance with Splendour in The Grass is needing more helpers so if you haven’t put your name on the roster, please conact Geoff Coughlan or Rick Vickers.

Brian Doyle was thanked for his efforts in organising a great car excursion - also the upcoming progressive dinner on 6 Aug. Please email Brian with your acceptance; this should be a great time of fellowship with members & partners.

Our Deputy Sergeant Bill extracted many fines & we enjoyed his country humour.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

The Club's involvement in the Vision Project provided us with a vision “to be a vibrant Rotary Club with a diverse membership, serving our community and making a positive difference in the world”.

To achieve that vision the following four critical success factors (CSFs) were identified:-
1. Growing our membership.
2. Conducting effective service projects.
3. Supporting The Rotary Foundation.
4. Developing future leaders at and above the Club level.

The most important issue is the retention and recruitment of our membership, without that the remaining issues become irrelevant. At the meeting I explained the means of achieving the CSFs and this will be the focal point on the new Board's agenda. Change may engender a degree of discomfort among some members and that is understandable, however, as President I cannot ignore the fact that we have a declining membership and it is imperative that we address the issue. RI have also recognised that membership worldwide is decreasing, and that how we meet as a Club needs to be more flexible. I ask you as members to consider factors that would contribute to making our Club more attractive to potential members.

LAST WEEK’S MEETING

23 places were set, 17 were occupied.
President Mike Keane opened the meeting, under the shadow of the third and deciding game of “ State of Origin “ Football for 2011.

Acting Sergeant Bill as usual did a sterling job,raising both mirth and funds with his perfected system of questionable fines. Keith Rogers managed to have his hands in all the right places to score an untested (but winless) scratchy.

President Mike, then took the opportunity of expanding on his ideas, previously expressed at the Change Over Dinner of the direction and priorities for the club in the coming year. The considerable work on vision and structure undertaken by Past President Rick and Tony Holmes was generously acknowledged. The question of poor membership retention and the challenges to be addressed have and are being researched, including interviews with past members, some of whom indicate possible renewal in changed circumstances.

Specifics raised included
• Vision of our Club is to be known for its vibrance/diversity/making a positive contribution in the community.
• Growing membership.
• Effective Service activity in the community.
• Support for RF.
• Mutually supporting our Club Membership at a personal level.
• Membership of 65 as a 3 year target.
• Acceptance that personal time is a major challenge for membership, current & potential.
• Money is a secondary to time as a membership constraint
• Children are probably creating a bigger time demand on this generation than in the past.
• Focus on on female recruitment to be supported by Bernice, Angela and Charlotte.
• Focus on Maple St business, currently under represented, in our membership.
• Review and discuss our meeting frequency,location and format.
• Consideration of more vertical integration and mentoring, i.e. Rotary/Interact.
• Review of our Club ByLaws/Constitution under District guidance
• Seek to replicate the effective activities displayed in Tiber Toga, Splendour in the Grass and Maleny Show.
• Support and assist Rick’s Board membership at Mary Cairncross.
• Enhance club linkage with other Service local clubs and across our Rotary District.
• Seek additional PNG/New Hebrides DIK opportunities
• Enhance support for RF,RI,Shelter Box,with evaluation of Centurion Club monthly fee.
• Support development of future leaders.
• Build Rotary knowledge, possibly through 5 minute presentations by our Directors and Past Presidents as part of our meeting agenda.
• Appreciation that all involvement by membership is voluntary, that Board decisions as a general principle follow resolution of issues after discussion with club membership.
• Clarity, structure and visibility are taken as key guiding principles.

The meeting closed following questions and discussion on :
1. What review of the constitution/bylaws is possible.
2. What future form of opening toast the membership would prefer.
3. Discussion of relative merits of the historic bulletin or the new blog format.

Brian Alllen's sausage sizzle team on Saturday were delighted when they were approached by the winner of this year's Calendar Photographic competition. He donated his prize of $250 to the Club and asked that it be put towards our ShelterBox fund.

STOP PRESS - MYSTERY CAR TOUR OF 10 JULY

Rotarians, Partners and friends had an enjoyable day out on Sunday when they joined in the Mystery Car Tour. Although the participation was disappointing all enjoyed the sunny winter day. There were two different journeys, one through Kenilworth, and the other through Nambour which led us to the very old Kin Kin Hotel for a good old country hotel lunch. Along each route there were a few questions that needed to be answered and the navigator’s observance was tested a few times. We all drove on roads less frequently travelled which made the trip so much more interesting even though one car, who shall remain nameless was a little late for lunch. We must sincerely thank Brian & Pam Doyle who put a lot of time and effort into organizing this social event which is the first one for this new Rotary year. The scenery was great, the venue was great and the company so enjoyable, just a pity a few more club members were not able to come and enjoy the fellowship.

LAST WEEK’S MEETING
49 Members and guests attended the 52nd changeover dinner at Flaxton Gardens on Wednesday 29th June   and were welcomed by our MC for the evening Greg Stevens. Bernice McLennan proposed a toast to Rotary International while Keith Rogers proposed an International Toast to the Rotary Club of Ndola, Zambia D9210.

President Rick presented Charlotte Golding with a Paul Harris Fellowship for the work she carried out during the year in connection with literacy.

President Rick presented his Annual Report July 2010 – June 2011 in both written form and photographic form and thanked everyone for supporting him during the year. He outlined the progress made towards the implementation of the Future Vision Plan

PDG Mike Gregory inducted incoming president Mike Keane and Mike spoke about the year ahead and the changes which were necessary to ensure the future of Rotary. He explained why the Rotary organization as a whole needs to examine how they operate so as to encourage additional members as well as retaining existing members in the future. President Mike stated that the present RI membership was 1.2 Million which is exactly the same number as it was 7 years ago. This is despite having inducted 1.2 Million new members during that period. Another concern pointed out by President Mike is the current age profile of Rotary members in Australia. 48% of our members are over 60 years of age while another 48% are in the 40 – 59 year age group. This leaves only 4% in the under 40 age group. 30% of members are retired and only 17% of the total members are female.

Jim Atkinson was invited to introduce the new RI theme for 2011/2012, which is “Reach Within to Embrace Humanity”. He then changed the theme banner.

LAST WEEK’S MEETING

Forty guests and members attended the Club’s Pride of Workmanship Awards Dinner at Tranquil Park last Wednesday. The theme of this year’s awards was “Acknowledging the work of the Emergency Services sector in our community” and three very worthy young people were recognised on the night.
The Awards ceremony was chaired by Sherryl with President Rick presenting the plaques and certificates to the awardees. The first to be recognised was SCOTT HUMPHRIES, who was nominated by Pamela O’Connor, Group leader of the Maleny SES, with support from the Maleny and District Rural Fire Brigade and the Maleny Naval Cadet Unit TS Centaur. Scott is an active member of all these organisations as well as being a student at Maleny High School.

The second to be recognised was LISA HARVEY, who was nominated by Rick Page of the Conondale Rural Fire Brigade. Lisa is still at school, but also manages to work part-time at Rachel Leigh Optometrists as well as dedicating time to learn the skills needed to be a fire-fighter in the Conondale Rural Fire Brigade.

The third to be recognised was JENNY HAWKE who was nominated by Craig Farmiloe of the Montville Rural Fire Brigade. As a young mother Jenny still finds time to be an active and dedicated member of both the community and the Montville Rural Fire Brigade.

Prior to the Awards ceremony Debra, Lynda, Michael and President Rick highlighted some of the projects being undertaken by the Maleny Club as well as Rotary International, so that the guests on the night were able to better understand what Rotary is all about.

FUTURE MEETINGS & EVENTS

Our Changeover Dinner to be held at Flaxton Gardens on Wednesday 29th June 6.30 for 7. Partners welcome. A bus is being organised to transport members to and from Flaxton Gardens.

A progressive dinner is being planned ( I think!) so details will be made public in the near future. This type of event is a great way to interact with other members & have a fun night.

A Mystery Car trip is planned for Sunday 10th July. Assembly at the High School 9.30 with departure 10am. Several different routes to be taken for about a 2 hour drive. Lots of fun (penalties for arguing with your partner!). Cost $10 per car with lunch available for purchase at the destination. Brian Doyle
needs numbers by Wednesday 6th July.

ROTARY INFORMATION

DISTRICT LITERACY AWARDS for the 2010/2011 ROTARY YEAR

Four clubs in D9600, Glass House Mountains; Maleny; Kingaroy and Samford Valley are to be congratulated as they have fulfilled the criteria and completed 5 literacy-related activities this year. Two compulsory activities are specified and then clubs can plan any another 3 for the year. The first compulsory activity relates to celebrating International Literacy day around 8 September and the second is to plan a literacy activity for March, the month set aside by RI for literacy.

Further information is on the D9600 website. Some clubs have appointed a Literacy champion to facilitate the planning of the activities and this seems to have worked well. All activities for the Literacy award need to be completed by 30th April and paperwork submitted.

Some of the activities completed by the 4 clubs are:
• Guest speaker – Head of English from the local high school.
• Sent books to the Solomon Islands.
• Funded 6 new computers for the local school library to assist with literacy and computer literacy.
• Guest speaker on the topic of adult literacy.
• Donated picture story books to families of Prep children at the local school.
• Funded a local high school student to attend a Literacy workshop. He then visited the club as a guest speaker.
• Gently used books donated to the local neighbourhood centre.
• Funded an e-reader program at a local school.
• Initiated a Rotary Reader Program where 30 volunteers are working in 3 local schools.
• Donated a Tales from a Dilly Bag kit.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Our special thanks to the Interactors plus their mentors Fran and Deb for treating us to a meeting at the High School. The meal was superb as was our after dinner speaker Brian who gave us an overview of some of the challenges for education reform. Our thanks also to Brian A for the range of goodies in the brown paper bag.

On your behalf I took the opportunity of thanking the Interactors also for their fantastic contribution to the Maleny Show roster. At the busiest times on the Friday when we were all at full capacity, they performed any task asked of them and helped us through that period. We probably could not have done it so well without them - and I said so.

I hope you have had a chance to look at the bulletin and the blog on our newly created website. I have had a few calls politely suggesting we still need the bulletin and hopefully the blog is not the only way of the future and dispensing with the weekly bulletin would be a backward step. It is very early days and we were just using some of the current technology to show how we could communicate to the members and to the public. It was never the intention to do away with bulletin. Perhaps in the future (way in the future) it may be fortnightly with weekly input on the blog. This is not for me to decide but for you, as members to let the board know how you feel. It will be then up to board (through the members) to let their wishes be known and decisions made. Thanks for the calls – this is how we should be working together.

I need some photos of the Christmas party at the Hankinsons and some of the recent trip to Moreton Island. We all enjoyed ourselves so much I can’t find any records of the event. Any assistance please?

This week we have public recognition of those volunteers who get the job done without fanfare and spotlights - the Pride of Workmanship awards. I look forward to you joining in their recognition at Tranquil Park.

LAST WEEK’S MEETING

Last week’s meeting was held at Maleny State High School. The Year 12 Hospitality Class cooked the meal and the INTERACT Club attended to Front of House. President Rick thanked the students for their efforts for catering and he also thanked the INTERACT Club for the help they gave at the Maleny Show.

President Rick thanked all Rotary members and their partners for their significant contribution to a very successful Maleny Show. He gave Sherry and Greg particular thanks for their outstanding contributions. Sherry in turn, gave thanks to Bernice for going beyond the call of
duty at the show. Anticipated profit is around $8000. Well done to all those involved.

There is combined Board Meeting at Linda’s place at 7pm this Monday, 13 June. Directors’ reports should be sent to Karen by Friday 10 June for distribution.

There will be a Rotary working bee at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve on Saturday, 18 June. Five or six people are needed from 8:30am - 12noon. Bring your own morning tea as the work will be at the western end of the reserve. A BBQ lunch will be provided. Contact President Rick if you are able to be a part of this working bee. The Apex Club has organised Paws of Thunder at the Showgrounds this Sunday, 12 June.

There is a Trivia Night at the RSL on 2 July. We are trying to get a table of eight from our Rotary Club to prove that we are the smartest club in town. Contact President Rick if you are feeling particularly intelligent. The questions will be half sport and half general knowledge.

Our gas bottles for the BBQ from now will be stored under the Community Centre. Mitre 10 will be used for refills and not the Farm Barn. The plastic safety bungs must be replaced back in the bottle for storage. There are plenty of these bungs in the esky.

Mike will organise a bus for the Change Over meeting at Flaxton Gardens.

Brian King spoke about the Australian Curriculum, the current state of education in OECD countries and club members sat a small NAPLAN test with various levels of success.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Well what a weekend!!. To those who can barely lift their arms or move their feet to reach for and read the bulletin, I wish to personally thank each and everyone who helped out at the Maleny Show. I watched as everyone, just everyone,
pitched and did more than was required – from those manning the front
gate, giving a welcoming Rotary smile to the thousands of visitors, to the BBQ
“chefs” dodging hot oil and colourful suggestions from all directions , to those
trying to translate the customers orders over the incessant show commentary and music, and of course the food assemblers, peelers, slicers and cleaners, as well as the those on Sunday morning refurbishing the stall and items. – all of you who made this massive effort a stand out success. I must also make special mention of the Interactors who were prepared to do any job and continuously showed diligence, calmness and grace under pressure and wasn’t there some
pressure at times? This next generation of leaders are something we can be
proud to be associated with.

The proof is in the pudding as they say. We has a gross income of about $16
000, so after settling the pizza partnership, and removing floats plus all the groceries, we should do better than $8,000, more or less.

"No Runny eggs you'll mess up the ladies dresses"

Our Treasurer will give you a better figure soon, possibly after the Board Meeting next week. Whatever the figure, your efforts have been justified, as well as
the camaraderie and teamwork that went into every product sold. It was also a
lot of fun. The other good news is that despite our best efforts to empty the supermarket shelves of all their soft drinks, eggs, bacon and meat, we eventually sold out at about 7. 12 pm. Regular menu items were abandoned about 6.30 with creative combinations of leftovers being sold to those still hungry enough (salad roll with onion and mustard?). The result –very little wastage, which means all the more to the bottom line.

Last week’s meeting we were beaten by technology in viewing the website so
please follow Ric’s directions and check out your new website. We will need
your best photos and words to bring it to life.

To those who attended the District Assembly at Caboolture, I know there is always something to learn or someone new and interesting to meet. I hope you did both.

Don’t forget to let Geoff C know if you are coming with partners to the Pride of Workmanship awards and or the Changeover Dinner. We need the numbers and
dietary requirements for catering purposes.

This week we will be treated to the Interactors as out hosts and guides around
the high schools, plus an insight into some educational challenges by our guest
speaker – our very own Brian K. See you at the High School at 6.30 for 7 pm.

LAST WEEK’S MEETING

Our nominated guest speaker was unable to attend due to Maleny Show commitments so our very own member Ric Townsend offered to give a demonstration of the revamped Maleny Rotary Club web site. Unfortunately after many attempts to rectify the technical issue this was not able to be presented in the form that it was planned. However Ric did a good job in explaining the site with the aid of his laptop screen as to how the project was progressing to date. Ric is calling for any information and photographs of any projects that Rotary have undertaken in the past that members have for him to enter into the site to make it interesting reading . Ric explained that blogging was the preferred easier method of entering information and more accessible for members to peruse, however there were not many “bloggers” present on the night. Members from each avenue of service could enter their reports into the blog along with the weeklybulletin and other relative Rotary information which will be accessible by all members. Suggestions were put forward that people may be interested in advertising their business on the site and therefore bring some revenue for the club. The need for someone to volunteer the job of marketing the possibility of advertising within the business community is there for the taking. The club appreciates the time that Ric is putting into this project as it is very time consuming and often very frustrating.

Celebrating 50 Years of Rotary in Maleny

On 29 April 2009, exactly 50 years to the day after the inaugural meeting of the Rotary Club of Maleny, Sir Clem Renouf, 1978-79 President, Rotary International launched a book on the history of the Club. The book was written by Club historian and archivist, Jack Wilcox AM.

Describing the theme, the cover of the book has the message: 'In 1959 the village of Maleny embraced the wide world of Rotary. Tales of challenges, achievements and camaraderie abound in this 50-year journey to the global village of 2009… graphically capturing the essence of Rotary, Service above Self'.

Sir Clem wrote the Foreword. Some of his comments:

"The spirit of the book the enduring bonds of friendship and fellowship generated by membership of the Rotary Club the pride in its contribution to the life of the community for half a century pervades its pages. I found some of the specialised chapters interesting, despite my familiarity with most of them. Who could read the chapter on Youth Exchange without being impressed by the potted histories of so many young people whose lives have been profoundly influenced by the club’s participation in this great program? Or the chapter on Mary Cairncross Park with the club’s fifty year commitment to a project of great significance to Maleny and beyond."

The book is essentially a history of Maleny from a service club perspective ― the history of a country village based on dairying and timber-getting making the transition to the global village of the 21st century.
