Rotary Club of Maleny Bulletin for 29th April 2020

"THE RANGE"  Vol. 61 No.20
WEDNESDAY 29TH APRIL 2020

LATEST NEWS
Arrangements are being made for a Zoom meeting on Wednesday 29th April.  Email details from the President will be circulated on Monday.  Otherwise all meetings and Sausage Sizzles have been cancelled until further notice.

PRESIDENT'S NOTES
It would be interesting to know how you all marked Anzac Day this year. I know that Chris Brooker was getting up at 4.30am to lower the flag and light the flame at the RSL.

I had my own little ceremony at 6 am. Not in my driveway, but on my front patio. I picked some Rosemary, lit my candle, and played the Last Post on my iPad. I remembered my Grandfather who left the farm in Peachester in mid 1915 to go with the 25th infantry Battalion as reinforcements for Gallipoli, and after that to France where he was injured in the Battle of the Somme. Also, my father who served with the RAAF in Borneo in WW11. Thankfully they both came home to tell the tale. Dawn on this unique Anzac Day gave us the opportunity to quietly remember those who weren’t so lucky.

I have enjoyed saying G’day to many of you who I’ve seen on my forays into Maleny for shopping or a walk on the precinct and Obi boardwalk trails. It’s time though, after more than a month of enforced break, to get back connecting with each other as Rotary colleagues. This Wednesday April 29th we were to have a Vocational night. Instead I invite you all to a at 5pm. I will send you all an invitation. If you won’t be attending please send apologies to me by midday Wednesday.

A week ago, I attended a District President’s Zoom meeting where DG Darryl gave us an update of what is happening in the wider world of Rotary. He presented PDG Wendy Protheroe with the Regional Service Award for Polio Eradication for her coordination of the Rotary response to the polio outbreak in PNG in 2018. The District has donated $25,000 from its Rotary District Designated Fund for global Rotary Disaster Grants. There were reports from clubs as to how they were engaging and continuing projects during the COVID-19 restrictions. Some clubs have held virtual inductions for new members, had international guest speakers present at their Zoom meetings, and many have continued with projects such as packing Birthing Kits at home, individually collecting items for the ‘Teacher in a Box’ program, and delivering medicines from local pharmacies to housebound seniors.

I am pleased to advise that our 2020 Maleny Rotary Community Grant applications have been reviewed and the recipients advised. The board made a decision to fund this project up to $5000 this year. There were 11 community applicants and 5 have been funded so far. These are:
• The Maleny Neighbourhood Centre – $1500 for utilities for the Women’s Transition House
• TS Centaur- $1500 for their annual insurance costs
• Conondale Hall Committee- $1000 for signage for their public hall
• Maleny Hospital Auxiliary- $500 for part payment for an Opthalmic Burr instrument
• Maleny Historical and Cultural Society- $470 for new fold-up tables.
Thank you to Rick V and his committee for their work on this project.
We had good news from the District this week that the club has been reimbursed $3975 for the 2019 grants we funded last year.

The Calendar committee are also working hard to make the 2021 Rotary Calendar a reality. Thanks to Lionel and his team who are collecting photographic entries and contacting past advertisers at present. Bernice has sent out an email relating to RDU subscriptions. Please advise her ASAP if you wish to have a digital subscription only, as this request needs to be submitted very soon.

Hope to see you all at the Zoom ‘Happy Hour’ at 5pm this Wednesday.

  1. Spent ANZAC day thinking about my dad and reading his flight log for April 1945. A bit more about his efforts can be found here :-) https://www.facebook.com/groups/MalenyLocalsHelpingLocals/permalink/2963967160332228 Ric
