PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Colourful and out there would aptly describe our inaugural Lift the Lid Mental Health Walk last Sunday 10th. It was a success even though the numbers attending were not as good as we would have hoped for. However, we made up for it by our impact on the town and those we encountered as we walked down Maple St, passing the various cafes as we went. When we were crossing over Maple St and the cars were stopped at the crossing for us, I did think to myself that any visitors to town might think we are all bonkers in Maleny.

As we walked around and collected some coins in our buckets, people certainly asked what it was for and were pleased that it was for a great cause such as mental health.

Whit N Whimsy did excellent business with coffees and cakes and thanks to them for putting up with us spreading ourselves out. We received tremendous support from some new local businesses, especially up at the top end of town and everyone was very pleased with the various prizes won in the raffle.

Not everyone dressed up; however those that did were impressive and colourful. Although a number of dogs did join us on the walk, there was little dressing up amongst them.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 6TH SEPTEMBER

President Paulette opened the meeting by welcoming members and introducing our guests from Toastmasters in Beerwah and the Chaplain at the Maleny State School.

Reminders on Upcoming Events

Maleny Rotary Golf Day: Roly provided an update on the Golf Day to be held on Friday 8th. Everything was now in place; great support received from the Maleny business community for the event with sponsorship and prizes, but the number of players is down from the previous year. Thanks to everyone who has volunteered to help on the day.

Australian Rotary Mental Health Walk: Scheduled for Sunday 10th September with prizes for the best dressed on the day. Proceeds will go Australian Rotary Mental Health Research.

Australia Zoo Parking: School holidays start on 16th September and parking is required over the following two weeks. The Club will be notified of our time slots.

Maleny Garden Club Parking: Their Spring Fair will be held on 7th October from 9am-4pm at the Showgrounds. Chris B will be looking for volunteers shortly.

Ulysses Bike Club will be holding a meet in Maleny in about 6 weeks time. We have been asked to cater with a BBQ lunch for about 150 people. Rick V will be looking for help to decide on a menu and plan the meal.

World Peace Day was to be held on 23rd September but has been put back to October.

Youth Program: Fran T advised the Interact Club at the Maleny High School has been extremely active. In August they held a walk to support the Fred Hollows Foundation which raised $1,600. They will be nominating someone to go the Rotary Science Week and the Rotary Transition Workshop from High School to University.

Sergeant at Arms: As is his usual wont, Chris managed to fine everyone in the room but took pity on our guests.

Our Duty Officer for the meeting Bernice McL introduced our guests from Toastmasters Beerwah, Ian, Katrina, and Franny. Ian has been in Toastmasters for 30 years, but Katrina and Franny are new to the club with only one years’ experience.  Ian Pinker joined Toastmasters after being introduced by a neighbour who kept at him on many occasions. He eventually went along to a meeting, enjoyed the experience and has been a member for over 30 years. He was a District Governor in 2014, with a district that covered Queensland, PNG and the South Pacific Islands.

At meetings, members learn and practice skills that can be applied to day-to-day life in work and personal situations, and gain confidence in public speaking and writing skills. He told us that he remains active in Toastmasters because of his enjoyment in mentoring young people starting their careers and the people you meet both in Australia and overseas. Young people can join Toastmasters at 18 years of age.

Toastmasters International is a nonprofit educational organisation that builds confidence and teaches public speaking skills through a worldwide network of clubs that meet online and in person. Founded in 1924, the organization is headquartered in Englewood, Colorado with approximately 270,000 members in more than 14,200 clubs in 148 countries.

Katrina Adrill joined Toastmasters to improve her skills to make presentations and answer impromptu questions in the workplace. She told us that a meeting usually starts with a warm-up where a topic is picked, and members must make an impromptu response of about 45 seconds. There are also tabletop talks where a member talks for 2 minutes on a topic and there are also longer prepared talks. She then asked us to participate in a warm-up by setting the scene of an aircraft making an unscheduled landing in an isolated region; and asked Ian to respond who in turn passed the floor on to Franny; Scott; Greg; Murray; Jim; Chris; and finally, Paulette who is a member of Toastmasters Beerwah.

Roly N gave the vote of thanks.

PRESIDENT'S NOTES
It has been a very wet past few weeks in the Sunshine Coast hinterland. I hope that all members and their families have remained safe on our roads and missed as many potholes as possible. Our next meeting at the Maleny Hotel is a Project Meeting. Whilst Covid 19 and flu are still about, there is no need to wear masks or to log in with your Qld App. Although we do not have an official guest speaker lined up, we can  look forward to a job talk from Alan Wilson plus reports from our Directors and some good hearted Rotary fellowship.

Your Rotary Ticket to Good Health: Its time again to get your Rotary Ticket to Good Health. Fiona Barthlomew, Practice Manager at our local Maleny Star Discount Chemist, has confirmed that her first order of Rotary Bowelscan Queensland test kits is now available for purchase at $22.

Koala fodder tree project at Spring Pastures Drive Mapleton:  Paulette S and I attended a meeting last Friday at the Nambour offices of the Sunshine Coast Council with Cr David Law, together with Rod Tunstall, Treasurer, RC of Nambour, Rachel Aspinall, Registered Koala Carer,  Jan Lawton, ADG Malouf Cluster and President RC of Woombye/Palmwoods and Bruce Lawton, Treasurer RC of Nambour 76.  There is a  prospective environmental Rotary project to plant an initial 500 eucalypt trees consisting of a variety of species for koala fodder trees on Sunshine Coast Council bush reserve parkland at Spring Pastures Drive, Mapleton.  The trees will be used by local koala carer Rachel Aspinal and other koala carers. We have also attended a joint Rotary Club meeting last Wednesday night with Nambour 76, Nambour and Woombye/Palmwoods to further discuss and advance the proposal with all 3 clubs.  Earlier in the evening we also attended the home of licensed Koala carer Rachel Aspinal to inspect her facilities and met up with 1 year old Ash – a female Koala recovering from Chlamydia and conjunctivitis. 

Maleny Education Support Fund (MESF):   Six applications have been approved so far in 2022 to support students at our local schools. Youth Director Fran T has been very proactive contacting the participating school principals. Fran T and I will be attending a Maleny Apex meeting on 22 May to seek their further support for this project.

Speak Up Now Say No to Domestic and Family Violence: Huge congratulations to Sherryl G and all the team from Speak Up Now who have been very busy planning events and activities during and/or shortly after the Domestic Violence Month of May as evidenced by the SUN calendar for May and June. Events will include the following:

8 May –  Unveiling Red Bench at Montville Uniting Church.

10 May – Maleny Candlelight Ceremony, Tesch Park, Maleny.

22 May – Unveiling Red Bench at Palmwoods Uniting Church.

3 June – Respectful relationships and kite making workshop at River School.

14 June – Adair Donaldson presentation/workshops at Maleny Chamber of Commerce (business), Maleny State School (primary school students), Maleny State High School (high school students) and at Beersheba Living Museum (coaches, managers and sports administrators).

Draft National Plan to end Violence against Women & Children 2022-2023:  Speak Up Now have submitted feedback to the draft plan and are asking that best practice/successful community intervention by community groups such as SUN be included in the plan as an appendix.

Rotary University Sunshine Coast Community Fund:  This meeting was cancelled because of the weather and will be rescheduled. The Scholarship recipients will be:

Centenary of Rotary  $5,000 Charlotte Raven – Animal Ecology                                                        Rotary  $4,500 each   Lisa Musgrave – Biochemistry, Kirsten O'Callorhan – Human Geography, and Lisa Randell -  Biological Science.                                           

Maleny Interact Club:  Our Club has financially supported four registrations and a teacher of our MSHS Interact Club to attend the District 9620 Interact Conference on 15 May at St Aiden's Anglican School, Corinda. 

Rotary Youth Driving Education:   MRC is now proudly part of RYDA Caloundra incorporating Caloundra, Caloundra Pacific, Glasshouse Country and Maleny Rotary Clubs. Our club representative Paulette S will be attending the next meeting at Corbould Park on 25 May from 9.30 am – 11.30 am with other members intending to help with the RYDA program. Our Club will be involved with the MSHS attendance at Corbould Park on 21st July and on another date to be worked out.

Changeover Dinner: Our changeover has been booked for 29 June at the Maleny RSL. 

Maleny Agricultural Show: I have kept our best news to last. The Show is going ahead on 27 and 28 May. It will be a case of all hands on deck. Jim A is arranging the Gate Roster. Roly N in conjunction with Bernice and John McL (before their departure for well-earned holiday) have been circulating  rosters for the Food Stall. Spots are filling quickly. I hope that all members can be involved at some stage during the event. We need up to 10 volunteers at the Food Stall at busy times throughout the Show.  I am hearing on the grapevine that Roly N, Bernice McL and John McL are putting together another great menu for our Rotary Food Stall which has become the annual Maleny Agricultural Show focal point for the best-priced and tastiest steak burger and an array of other delicious burgers, rolls, soups and soft drinks. 

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 4TH MAY

President Greg opened the meeting with the usual formalities before welcoming our Guest Speaker Scott Willis, Principal of Conondale School.  Greg then thanked all the Rotarians who helped out with the parking at Australia Zoo over the holidays. He then highlighted upcoming events:

- 10 May Maleny Candlelight Ceremony, Tesch Park at 5pm, organised by Speak Up Now. 

- 11 May Combined Meeting Rotary and University of the Sunshine Coast Community Fund (RUSCCF).  

- 25 May RYDA Training Day at Corbould Park Caloundra for Rotarians considering participating in the upcoming driver training days for our local Maleny State High School year 10s and other local schools during July.  

- 27 & 28 May Maleny Agricultural Show with Rotary Food Stall and gate duties.

- 3 June  – respectful relationships and kite making workshop at the River School by Speak Up Now. 

Roly N outlined the need for additional volunteers on the Food Stall roster and asked for volunteers to provide both pumpkin and pea and ham soup.

Jim A asked for more volunteers for the gate on the Friday.

There was then a change of tone as Roly proved to be a ruthless stand in Sergeant.

Renee H introduced our Guest Speaker Scott Willis, the Principal of Conondale State School.  Scott Willis became the Principal at Conondale in April 2021. This is a small rural school with 70 pupils spread over 7 grades in an historic building - in contrast, there are 400 students at Maleny State School.  As an aside, Conondale was the favoured location for our Bike Ed teams when that programme was running.

Scott, who after growing up in Mooloolah Valley, chose to go into education and found his niche in small schools. For Conondale, he spoke of his goals of not only helping his pupils but also building relationships with the teachers, the community and the parents. 

Scott also outlined a case where a grant from the Maleny Education Support Fund had made a vital difference for one of his pupils.  He spoke in praise of the Fund and thanked the Club for its creation.  There was a lively question and answer session from an appreciative audience, 

Phillip gave the Vote of Thanks.

1. FROM A MEMBER WHO WISHES TO REMAIN ANONYMOUS

I went fishing one morning, but after a short time I ran out of prawns. Then I saw a redbelly black snake with a frog in his mouth. Frogs are good barramundi bait.     Knowing the snake couldn’t bite me with the frog in his mouth I grabbed him right behind the head, took the frog, and put it in my bait bucket. Now the problem was how to release the snake without getting bitten. So, I grabbed my bottle of Bundy Rum and poured a little in its mouth. Its eyes rolled back, he went limp. I released him into the creek without incident and carried on fishing using the frog.  A little later, I felt a nudge on my foot.  It was that bloody snake with two more frogs. 2. PRESIDENT'S NOTES
Our next meeting at the Maleny Hotel on 15 September is a General Meeting subject to our new COVID 19 restrictions. The Delta Strain is having consequential impacts on many of our planned activities and those of so many of other clubs and organisations. Don’t forget to log in with your Qld App and continue bringing your masks - which can be removed when seated. We can look forward to an interesting presentation from Shannon Horsfall on USC Rotary Scholarships.

1. Many thanks to Craig S, and John and Bernice McL for volunteering at  the Mooloolaba Ironman on Sunday 12 Sep in the baggage area.

2. Sherryl G, Paulette S and myself joined our Speak Up Now  partner members Val France, Barb Jones and Ian and Karen Demack at a Hairdressers for Hearts Fundraiser at the Bribie Is RSL on 9 September. It was a great opportunity to network and special mention was made of our new Red Benches and hairdresser and beautician  domestic and  family violence and elder abuse training up here on the Blackall Range.

Special guest was Hairdressers for Hearts Ambassador Lisa Curry and we were thoroughly entertained by her hairdresser husband who is a highly talented look a like Elvis Pressley entertainer. And Ian Demack took home a seafood tray raffle prize to make the journey down the Mountain and back even more rewarding. 

3. Sherryl G attended an inspection of the Palliative Care Rooms at Caloundra Hospital opposite the Caloundra RSL last week and has come away for some great ideas with respect to our hands on service project to renovate the Palliative Care Rooms at the Maleny Hospital.

I can only reinforce the benefit of this project for our community after spending Friday in a ward at the Maleny Memorial Hospital with a 90 year old gentleman (who was waiting to enter a High Care unit at the Palmwoods Retirement Centre) and moreover the speed with which the medical staff acted on the adverse results of an Xray and Ultrasound Scan to my hand. The medical care that our Hinterland community is provided by our local Maleny Memorial Hospital and it's staff is absolutely outstanding. And thank you to Paulette S for driving me at short notice to SCUH, from where this report has been sent.  I look forward to catching up with you all next Wednesday.

And congratulations to Keith and Gloria who celebrate a milestone anniversary this month.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 1ST SEPTEMBER
Some Rotary business before dinner included:
• Sherryl gave an update on the Speak Up Now DV project. The latest Red Rose Foundation red bench at the Pioneer Village was unveiled on Tuesday 31/8 by Malcolm Baker and Senior Sergeant Kate Teasdale from the Sunshine Coast Vulnerable Person’s Unit. A good crowd including the Men’s Shed attendees watched the unveiling & presentations, followed by a sumptuous morning tea provided by the Historical Society. The Hairdressers with Hearts on-line DV awareness training has been taken up by 16 local hairdressers/barbers so far, including three from Barbers of Maleny, all of whom received a Pride of Workmanship Award from the club. Renee from Barbers of Maleny attended the meeting.

• Fran described the recent Interact activities which included a wheelchair sports day and RUOK Day.

• Lionel thanked all those who helped to hang the photos submitted for the 2022 calendar at Maple 3 last week. The calendars are now on sale for $6, with a couple of new outlets coming on board to sell them.

• Bernice passed around the roster dates for the Australia Zoo parking for the Sept/Oct school holiday period. 

• Greg reminded members of the date for the rescheduled DG visit to the Kenny Cluster. It will be on Sunday 17 October at Australia Zoo. Members who registered for the original date need to confirm with District Secretary Ian Hope for the new date.

• Paulette announced that the inaugural meeting of the club environment committee had been held with several ideas put forward for future club projects in this area. One was a Conservation survey of platypus in the Obi, possible date 10 October. Paulette also described the Pride of Workmanship Night as a great success with 13 recipients and 86 attendees at the event at Tranquil Park on 21 August.

• Bernice reported on a visit by a group of club members to the Maleny Hospital family rooms with current President of the Hospital Auxiliary, Jan Cornfoot. The work needed could mainly be painting once a suitable colour scheme was decided upon.

• Craig confirmed that the club Vocational Visit to the Pioneer Village on Wednesday 29 September had been locked in for 4pm. Venue for a meal after the visit is still in planning.

Our guest speaker for the night was Darrell Dalton, President of Golf Programs Australia (GPA), assisted by his wife Michelle who is secretary of GPA, and Sophie Bolton who is one of the athletes in the GPA program. Their motto is “Driving Inclusion – Breaking Isolation”.

What seemed like a presentation all about golf turned out to be much, much, more. A little research on the organisation revealed that Golf Programs Australia Incorporated is a social enterprise charity organisation that develops and delivers golf programs for the underprivileged in the community. These include: The Intellectually and physically disabled, youth at risk, mental health programs, programs for the aged and indigenous programs. The charity operates a retail store at 89 Currie Street Nambour which provides opportunities in retail, business & creativity and assists in social enterprise training for individuals living with an intellectual disability (govolunteer.com.au).

Darrell who is a golf professional and has a background in nursing gave a potted history of PGAI which started in 2014 as a training program for the Special Olympics. In 2015 it became a registered charity, and the golf program became a springboard to value-add opportunities for social enterprise training for the participants. About 25-30 athletes attend golf activities from 4-6pm at Tanawa Valley Golf and Tennis centre every week.

Michelle described the Social Enterprise training aspect of the organisation, for which she is the trainer and mentor. Students can learn skills such as design, upholstery, interview techniques, journalism, business and accounting. They have both a shopfront and workrooms in Currie Street Nambour - a cross between a golf shop and an Op shop where they sell golfing equipment as well as products produced by the enterprise trainees. The shop opened in 2016 and is run like a family business. A focus is on reusing, recycling and repurposing resources. Michelle highlighted several products which she had on display, including cards made by Sophie and their annual GPAI calendars. 

Darrell and Michelle have a vision to build purpose-built golf facilities in every state and territory for individuals who have an intellectual disability. The facilities would provide training and work placement opportunities in areas such as warehousing, greenkeeping, hospitality and retail. They illustrated their presentation with clips from their You-Tube channel. They have a significant social media presence which includes an Instagram and Facebook page. On their display they had a brochure which showed the bios of some of the students in the video clips, including Sophie whose social enterprise business is called ‘Angel 22’. 

This certainly was a very interesting presentation about an organisation which many of us had not heard about before. For the golf athletes and students in the social enterprise training, GPAI is making a significant impact in their lives. (a) Club Members
On behalf of the club, I pass on my heart felt best wishes for Brian A and Gillian and Chris RS and Judi and their families as Brian and Chris recover from their respective health issues. Likewise for Cilla and Rick V and their family as Cilla prepares to undergo a major procedure over the coming weeks.
(b) Our next meeting at The Maleny Hotel on Wed 7 Apr 2021 under Qld COVID-19 Regulations. Mike G has organised Madison Crane to be our guest speaker at this meeting and I look forward to listening closely to Madison’s recent experiences throughout Europe as part of the Rotary Youth Exchange Program and the impact that the program has made on her future aspirations. 
Madison also happens to be the daughter of our newest member Des C and wife Kelley. Again, a very warm Maleny welcome to both Des and Kelley into our Rotary Club and our international Rotary family. I have included below some photos from the Induction, and its great to hear that Des is already on our Rotary Calendar committee.

Notwithstanding the approach of Easter, our members have been and will be continuing to serve our community with distinction. Over the past few weeks:
• Obi Clean Up Sherryl G, Paulette S and Greg W attended the Obi Clean Up on Sunday 7 March. It was pleasing to see the improvement in the cleanliness of the Obi in comparison to our previous clean-up about a year ago.
• 14 March Ironman Event Volunteer assistance provided by Craig S, Bernice and John McL and Greg W as part of the Rotary Hinterland Team at Mooloolaba from 4.30 am to 3 pm. We shall be receiving a payment for the service work. 
Sherryl G has been very busy with the Youth Portfolio with the Interact Conference 2021 on 14 March at Caboolture Memorial Hall. We have 2 Rotarians, a teacher & 4 students, registered to attend the conference.
• Interact Aprons District Grant: The final report was submitted on 28 February and District will pay 2/3 of the costs ($319).
• Interact Coffee Machine: We have made a contribution of $ 803.90 for a new Breville Barista Express coffee machine which will be used by the Interactors to raise funds.
• TS Centaur: Past President of our Club Eddie Vann and Linda Vann have retired from their positions with TS Centaur. Des Crane as secretary of TS Centaur has sent out an invitation for this event – a lunch on Saturday 27 March at the RSL. See invitation below: I encourage members who are not attending the District Conference at Kingaroy to attend what will be a great local event.
• Solar Light Project: As Sherryl recently reported to the Board “This project was very successful and enjoyed by the 16 Year 6 students from The River School, 1 staff, 4 parents and 7 Rotary members who attended." Chris B collected all the letters from the school and the completed kits have been returned to Solar Buddy this week. The final report has been submitted to acquit the grant.
• Earlyact. Sherryl G  has also contacted Ann Donoghoe to see if there is any possibility as to whether the school may be interested in forming a club.
• Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment (RYPEN): 16-18 May at Luther Heights, Coolum. Targeting age-14-17 students who want to build their communication and leadership skills. $340 per participant. Will get Fran to see if any interest among Interactors etc.
• Borderline Youth Camp 3-9 July 2021: Alan Wilson has provided information on this camp for teenagers aged 15-18 which focuses on youth mental health. Alan’s daughter, Helen, is a leader for the camp and is willing to come to the Club to speak about it. Cost is $490 per person. As Sherryl has reported, “It sounds very good, however it is at Camp Laurence, Lake Moogerah near Boonah, so not sure if we could get interest from teenagers up here considering how far away it is? More information at www.borderlinecamp.com.
• D&FV Project-Speak Up Now - Stop domestic and family violence: The grant for the DV signs ($432.50) has been received. The project also received a $250 Local Heroes grant from the Andrew Powell program. The cheque was presented on 5th March with Greg W and Bernice McL attending with other members of the group for a photo with Andrew Powell.
• Hairdressers with Hearts had its official national launch on 6 March. Some committee members attended this at Bribie. The launch was accompanied by several press releases and aired on Channel 7 and the ABC. Representatives from HWH will be at our event on Thursday.
• Hairdressers Cheese and Wine Event was held on 11 March at MNC 6-8pm. The event was well organised. Invitations were widely delivered to many hairdressers, massage therapists and barbers across the range. Sherryl G and Greg W attended. 
• Red bench project: Our next project is at Maleny Pioneer Village. The quote for materials from Malcolm B (as a Maleny Mens Shed member) has been accepted and it is hoped that other materials recently donated may also reduce the costs. 
• Rotary Action Group for Family Safety www.ragfamsafe.org. Sherryl G joined this Rotary International group and hopes to find out more about other initiatives throughout Australia and the world relating to family safety awareness. A quote from their website “By sharing ideas and experiences Rotary clubs worldwide can begin to change perceptions of what is safe and what sorts of behaviour are normal and acceptable, and which are not”.
• Rotary SAFE Families Ambassador Clubs Program: www.rotaryclubofMelbourne.org.au/rotarysafefamilies. This program is an initiative of the RC of Melbourne. They have developed resources which include a Toolkit for D&FV awareness and information. Their Ambassador club program is a Rotary 100 Australia project. Sherryl G is exploring  how to become an Ambassador Club and what it involves and hopes this would complement what we are doing with the Speak Up Now project.
• A recent recipient of a Rotary Club of Maleny sponsorship, local young Wootha adventurer Sam Hughes, the Travelling Jackeroo, will be departing soon. Please keep looking at our Club facebook pages for an update.
• Website and Club Brochure: And a huge thankyou to our website team of Phillip S, Ric T, Paulette S and a special mention to Clive Waring for putting together the marvellous changes to our website and new club brochure. As Paulette S recently commented, we now have one of, if not the best website of any Rotary Club, in Australia.
• Our Community Assistance Program to other clubs and organisations: Rick V has been very busy with the Maleny Show Society sorting out a plethora of COVID 19 compliance requirements This is a huge task and many thanks to Ric for taking on the role within our community.
• Maleny Settlers Green:The selection of the playground equipment for stage 1 of the playground is underway.

- Rotary District Conference at Kingaroy on 26-28 March. This is the last District 9600 Conference. Ever. You won't want to miss this. Registrations close on 18th March. I am assured by DG Neil Black that there is heaps of accommodation available. The conference has been well organised, has several great speakers and a rural Qld town very keen to show off the best of good old country hospitality. I encourage as many members as possible to join our 7 strong contingent of Maleny Rotarians Bernice and John McL, Paulette S, Craig S, Mike and Sherryl G and myself for a fun weekend with some serious networking, education and an opportunity to exchange ideas.

(e) Community Project(s) for 100 years celebrations in 2021. 
- Peace Poles with up to 10 languages in local schools. An estimate of costs for the poles and the plaques has been obtained and selecting participating schools.
- An upgrade of the Rotary memorial stone at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve or more resting benches within the reserve.
- Hinterland Cluster Clubs Centenary Project (long term) – AG Jan Lawton waiting on a response from the State Member for Buderim as to availability of land for a park based peace project.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 3RD MARCH
President Greg welcomed members, guests and partners. Bernice provided an update on member, Brian Allen, who has been hospitalised after a serious accident on his property. A roster of Rotarians is being organised to mow the lawn around Brian’s house.
There was time for some business before the meal.
• Chris B advised that the Anzac Day street parade would go ahead this year. Volunteers are required to assist with contact tracing records before the march starting at Cooke Park and also at the RSL for the lunch.
• Paulette advised that the Clean Up Australia activity would focus on the Obi surrounds from the Showgrounds to Gardener’s Falls. Turn up at 7.30am at Tesch Park Sunday 7 March.
• Bernice conducted a ballot which was required for all clubs in District 9600 to endorse the election of the new 2021-2022 Rotary District 620 board to start 1 July 2021. This was passed unanimously.

Important business of the night was the induction to membership of Des Crane. Des was accompanied by his wife, Kelley. Phillip introduced Des with a short bio which described his working life in various regional areas of Queensland and his early training as a baker. He moved from baking to environmental work and gained a degree in production and horticulture. Most recently he has been employed as a farm manager for a pharmaceutical company. This employment led to some time spent in Germany and managing their farm in Kingaroy where the raw product for various pharmaceutical products is grown. Des and Kelley and their family have an acreage in Conondale. Des was enthusiastically welcomed as a member by all Rotarians present. 

Guest speaker for the night was Rick Paget, newly appointed as the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre Coordinator and Development worker. Rick has come to this position with a wealth of experience in a variety of areas including travel and tourism, social work, and community development. He has combined this with being a community pastor and a professional coach. He left Western Australia with his family in 2013 and headed to the Sunshine Coast and has never left.
Rick paid tribute to his Grandfather, Barry Paget, who was a dedicated Rotarian in the UK, particularly active in the International Fellowship of Flying Rotarians. He recounted a special trip around Europe with his grandfather where they flew to various cities to meet up with other Flying Rotarians – sounded quite an adventure
He gave a short history of the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre, established in 1992 which is independent, not for profit and a registered charity. It is governed by a managing Committee and has close links to the Flexi-School which is housed in its premises. At present they are working on a 3-year plan. While this is still a work in progress, Rick listed areas of Future Outward Focus. These were Community well-being, Youth, Families and the Elderly, Housing and Homelessness, Indigenous/First Nations, and Disaster Response. Rick described many of the projects operating out of the centre which included the Community Lunch held every Thursday, Emergency relief and the free street pantry, Service Referral, the Fix-it café, TULE- a grief and dying support group, and counselling and JP services
Rick expanded on the area of Housing and Homelessness with several statistics for the Sunshine Coast area:
• 1500 people are experiencing homelessness or are marginally housed
• 1942 people are registered for housing assistance
• 1325 of these are considered very high need
• 769 of these are rough sleepers.
Rick described some of the initiatives being investigated to alleviate this serious situation on the Coast. These were the Bed-down project and a Sleep Bus which could accommodate 20 people overnight and could move to different locations each night. He also mentioned the Maleny Women’s House which can accommodate 3 women for short term accommodation. The Neighbourhood Centre is working on trying to make The Women’s House project more sustainable and looking at different models to run it.
Rick supported his talk with a very professional power-point presentation. The Maleny Neighbourhood Centre is certainly an asset to our community and it was very good to hear directly from Rick about the current situation and future plans for the centre.

PRESIDENT'S NOTES

(a)    Future Meetings under the amended Qld COVID-19 Regulations post 8 July 2020

Following concerns expressed by several members after our last meeting on the 15 July 2020., Chris B, and myself attended with Hotel management on 31 July 2020 with regard to the set up of our future meetings at the Maleny Hotel commencing Wed 5 August 2020.

We have taken these concerns on Board and can report the following changes:
•    The Maleny Hotel will continue to comfortably sit and provide meals to our members in our usual lounge room location at the Maleny Hotel.
•    The tables and chairs will be re-arranged from the previous format.  Tables for the meeting will be set at 4 per table, using 6 or 7 tables as required.  Distancing will entail 1.5 m from “back of chair” to ”back of chair”. There is ample area within the room for this placement and we viewed the set up format.
•    Members are requested to sign in for Rotary and also for Maleny Hotel at same point. Wrist tags will be self-issued for Hotel patrons at sign in. The sign in point will be at the entry to our meeting room
•    Members are also asked to remain seated except for going to bar and purchasing drinks. The veranda area will be available for our use but members must be seated.
•    This is to comply with latest requirements by Queensland Health that restaurant patrons be seated for drinks and dining.
•    Chris B will be available to be our “sheep dog” COVID 19 Compliance Officer and moving members from bar meeting room.
•    Members are encouraged to pay for their meals (usual price $20.00) on line to Jim A before the meeting and order at same time using the attached menu which members are familiar with to avoid a crush at the entry point to our meeting room which is from inside the hotel. Please confirm your meal choice at entry
(b) Projects and Activities
As mentioned at changeover, RI President-elect Holger Knaack has challenged all of us as Rotarians with his new theme for 2020-21, Rotary Opens Opportunities, to:
•     create opportunities that strengthen our leadership,
•     help put service ideas into action,
•     improve the lives of those in need, and
•     create change in the world.

Despite the continuing and changing difficulties being presented to us all by the COVID 19 virus, our members have kicked off the new Rotary year doing all of these and so much more.
1.    District Grant Approvals
Thanks to the dogged determination of immediate Past President Sherryl Gregory, the Rotary Club of Maleny was successful with 3 District Grant Applications. These grants are allowing us to complete 3 fantastic local projects
(a)    Domestic Violence Signage Project: -In a joint collaboration with local Zonta, Quota,and  Lions Clubs, newly redesigned Domestic Violence signs are now at the printers and will be available for installation in numerous Mens Amenities in and around Maleny and Montville during the next week, and a Domestic Violence Forum has been planned and is being organised for 5.30 PM on Wednesday 26 August 2020 at the Maleny RSL with highly experienced and knowledgeable speakers from within our Sunshine Coast region.
(b)    Solar Buddies Project
  An initial project meeting has been arranged for next week.
(c)    Interact Aprons Project: Materials have been acquired and club members are meeting tomorrow to progress the logistics of cutting out and printing of the Aprons for the Maleny Interact Club.

2.    Pride of Workmanship Awards
Our Vocation Director Paulette Steele and her energetic team have been wearing out their shoes attending local Maleny businesses during July 2020 seeking nominations for our Pride of Workmanship Awards. Several nominations have been received with nominations closing on Saturday 1 August 2020. Our first Pride of Workmanship Awards ceremony since 2012 will be held at Tranquil Park Resort at 483 Mountain View Rd Maleny on Saturday 29 August 2020 with the nominees and their guests. Please claim the date in your diaries.

3.    Maleny Settlers Green Project
In a local broad based collaborative environmental and recreation project with Maleny District Sport And Recreation Club, Maleny Garden Club, Maleny Apex, Maleny Lions, Maleny Cultural & Historical Society and Friends of Pattemore House, the Club has now completed a Commonwealth Community Environment Grant we obtained in the sum of $20000 to purchase and plant native trees shrubs and groundcovers to
(i) establish a wildlife habitat corridor for rare & endangered local endemic & native species linking the nearby Obi Creek riparian corridor, the isolated Porters Wood rainforest, the Northern Wetlands & the Southern Wetlands located on the Maleny Community Precinct
(ii) use a variety of insect, bird & butterfly attracting host & food plants to provide habitat for rare species
(iii) establish a designated butterfly garden close to a play area for children.
(iv) create a community education resource for learning about animal / plant relationships including their indigenous names
(v) compliment the butterfly attracting vegetation program on the adjoining Maleny Golf course
The grant will now be acquitted
Despite some Maleny weather, the Maleny Rotary green team of Lionel T, Jeff C, Roly N, James M and myself have also completed the installation of garden piping on the cordon steel garden border edging on Wednesday 29 July 2020.

4.    Parking at Australia Zoo
Several members led by our mercurial Chris B helped out the Glasshouse Mountains Club with parking at Australia Zoo during the first week of the last Qld school holidays.

5.    Winter Blues Drive In Concert at Maleny Showgrounds Saturday 18 July 2020
This innovative event sprung out of the need to inject a shot of confidence into and reward our local community for its compliance with COVID 19 restrictions after so many months of lockdown, and to engage with and provide an opportunity for our local musicians to perform for the first time in over 4 months before a live audience and earn much needed remuneration.
The venture could and would not have happened without a highly motivated and dedicated team working around the clock over an amazingly short 5 week period to collaboratively and cooperatively work with the our local Council, Qld Health, Qld Police, Liquor Licensing and an array of local businesses and sponsors together with our own members and partners to provide and serve food, coffee, and alcohol, safely park cars and undertake all set up , conduct the event , clean and pull down everything in compliance with an absolute hoard of rules and regulations.

Thanks to Paulette S, we engaged a great range of local Blues bands including local legend Kevin Borich Express, Vix & the Slick Chix, The Spirit Blues Band ,and local up and comers Accidently on Purpose and arranged the delivery, set up and use of a mega huge and incredibly clear and bright 50 sq metre electronic screen., and the sound and video engineers. I don’t think I have ever seen more leads, microphones, speakers, musical equipment, cameras and lights be installed so quickly, efficiently, and professionally, and then packed up and removed in the same manner. The backstage team together with the sound and video production were amazing

Melinda M raised an unbelievable $ 8500 from our local Maleny sponsors, Rick V and Chris B weaved magic around and through the COVIT 19 Regs , and on the afternoon set up, during the event and in the clean up on Sunday so many members made a vital contribution to the success of the event. A huge thankyou to everyone who made a contribution.

Hard work pays off. Not only was the weather on the night clear and still, but the event was a raging success. We supported our local community, lifted and hopefully changed our profile within our community through an enormous increase in visits to our website, and likes to our facebook page, made a profit that we shall use to fund our own Community Grants scheme, and above all have demonstrated that our club has that entrepreneurial “can do” spirit, that can transform a big dream into a highly successful event. We are reaching out, opening doors and making so many new connections .

6.    Other Grants:
•    Our Commonwealth Volunteer Grant for equipment: The equipment has been purchased. I am yet to acquit this, but will now do so over the next week or so.
•    COVID19 Community Response Grants Continuity and Connectivity Application COV19CC1116 Form Submitted 1 Jun 2020, 8:06pm AEST- was unsuccessful

7.    2021 Rotary Calendar:
The work undertaken by Lionel T and the organising committee has been outstanding, with a record number of entries, despite intervention by the Covid 19 virus. The printing is done and the Calendars are being collected for distribution. Lionel will provide a further update as to whether any photos can be hung at Maple 3.

8.    Maleny Park Run
Jo Turner has contacted me to advise that she lodged an out and back course on the Precinct for final approval. Council has amended the permit slightly, but ParkRun Australia are in agreement with its terms and I expect her to advise that the Maleny Park Run is approved and signed off in the near future. It is envisaged that Parkrun Australia will raise an invoice for a reduced contribution of $ 850 from the funds that has been set aside for the new Maleny ParkRun to proceed.

9.    Rotary District Project Defibulator
It was great to catch up last Tuesday 28 July with DG Neil Black , AG Jan Lawton and Rotarians from our sister cluster Rotary Clubs to celebrate the Handover of the District Project defibulator to the Beerwah Sports Club.

10.    Nepal Earthquake Rehabilitation - Womens' Empowerment Training and Business Development Project Phase 1
It was fantastic to receive the acquittal report from CL and Jim and to read of the outcomes provided to so many women in Nepal.  An outstanding project.

11.    Maleny Education Support Fund
CL and Angela G have given a glowing report of the benefits of this combined project earlier this month and we can look forward to hearing further about the benefits it has provided to local youth throughout the year.

12.    Project to mark 100 years of Rotary in Australia
As mentioned at our last meeting, I would be pleased if you would put on your thinking caps and contact me or any other member of the board about one or more potential projects to mark this remarkable Rotary milestone in Australia.

I look forward to catching up and sharing some fellowship with you all at our next meeting.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 15TH JULY

President Greg welcomed a good turn out of members and a guest Lyn Dickson to our first dinner meeting at the hotel since March.  He announced that the DG Neil Black, together with his wife and ADG Jan Lawton, will make his official visit on 19 August.  It is planned that he will visit Rotary projects around the town before a Partners Night dinner at the hotel.

Chris B reported that, following his experience at Australia Zoo, he had obtained illuminated batons for traffic direction.

Jeff C said that the plantings at Settlers Green and the steel border edging were complete.  There is still work to do to cover the sharp edges and he called for volunteers.

The District Training Assembly has been fully booked.  Information will be available on line.

The Sergeant made a long awaited return and attempted to recoup the revenue that had been lost over the previous months in a single session.

Final arrangements for the Winter Blues Drive In Concert were discussed.  There was an ovation for the organising committee which had done a huge job on a very short timescale.  Arrangements had been finalised with the State Health Department, Council and the Show Society - the latter had been particularly helpful.
Patrons in the pavilion are limited to 150 and all members working in the pavilion area must complete an online course.
Paulette explained how those parking on the oval could get meals in the pavilion.
Rick said that it was vital that total attendees were kept below 500 - by shutting the oval to parking if necessary.
Greg praised Melinda for the great job in arranging for the screen and sponsorship. He also thanked Paulette for all her work with this project.

Lionel reported that a record number of photographs had been submitted for the calendar and a selection had been made.  Printer proofs were due shortly and sales should start by mid August.

Paulette said that several Pride of Workmanship forms had been handed out and three nominations had so far been received.

President Greg indicated that the Board would be considering a project to mark 100 years of Rotary in Australia.
