PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

1. Well, first off a massive congratulations to all those on the sub committee for organizing such an amazingly successful inaugural Charity Golf Day at the Maleny Golf Club. I can’t believe we had such a big turnout of players and what about the best day weather wise that we could have asked for!! Over $9,000 profit is phenomenal and that’s a great sum to give to both Orange Sky, so they can help so many more homeless people, and to RAWCS to help those in Ukraine who have lost so much this year.

2. It’s AGM time at our next meeting! This is when we seek nominations for the committee starting 1 July 2023, which is a bit odd, when with most AGMs the existing roles are relinquished then and the new committee starts immediately after the AGM.

If you haven’t seen a copy of the Nomination Form that Bernice sent out this week, get in touch with Bernice and she’ll send you out a copy again. If you are seriously thinking about joining the committee and interested in any of the roles listed and maybe have a couple of questions, feel free to call me or one of the other current committee members about what’s involved.

The difference this year is with the Secretary’s position. It’s split into two parts now which will make it easier to do. The Secretary role is fine for someone to do who is looking to travel as it can all be done online. So as long as you have a phone and a laptop and an internet connection occasionally, there’s no reason to stay in Maleny for this position. 

So there is a new position of ‘Minutes Recorder’. For this you will have to attend the board meetings held each month and take the minutes and also send out the agenda, which is an existing template that simply transfers from month to month.

We already have someone showing a strong interest in one of the Director’s roles, so have a think about it. You can transition into one of the roles slowly over the next 7 months. Oh and by the way, I am super keen for someone who thinks the President role looks interesting in a couple of years to take on the President Elect role, which of course doesn’t start until 1 July 2023.

3. We are hopefully going to be busy next year with the Woodies Expo, confirmed for 2023, and then a few weeks later the Maleny Show. Also, it’s likely that we might be called on for our parking prowess again in early August for a major music event at the Showgrounds, to be organised by the Queensland Music Festival. They are talking about 5,000 people attending a one day event. We’ve already been approached to see if we’re interested in parking vehicles.

4. Lastly, we’ve got a Vocational Night on this month, now scheduled for 23 November. We are going to be given a tour of the new SES facilities on Macadamia Drive at 5.30pm and then we’ll go for yummy pizza and drinks at Jen’s Pizza at Finbars. We’ll be taking numbers attending at next week’s meeting and I’m sure there will be an email doing the rounds as well. Anyway, let Craig know if you are planning on coming along.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 2ND NOVEMBER

President Paulette welcomed 18 members and guest speaker Nathan Dodd to the meeting.

Greg W reported on the Festuri Multi Cultural Festival held at Beerwah on last Saturday, where our Club joined with the RC of Glasshouse Country in having a stall promoting Rotary. One positive from the event was that it looks like Glasshouse will gain a new member.

Craig S advised that there will be a vocational visit on November 23rd to the new SES and RFS headquarters in Maleny commencing at 5.30pm and afterwards having dinner at Jen’s Pizza. As Jen is not able to renew her lease at the Purple Palate complex, this will be the last opportunity for the Club to savour Jen’s Pizza’s.

Rick V advised that there will be an Australia Day event at the Showgrounds next year, although it will not be the same as previous years. At this stage there will be a Flag Raising ceremony at TS Centaur followed by a Citizenship Ceremony. It is not known at this stage if APEX will be putting on their traditional Breakfast. Rick will keep the Club updated as more information becomes available.

Jim A reported on the highly successful Golf Day held at the Maleny Golf Club on Friday 28th October. Fortunately the weather on the day was fine and warm and 73 golfers hit off at 9am. With the support of many sponsors and donations, the day was not only a success socially but financially. The golf competition raised $8,446 and, when the proceeds of the raffle are added, the total raised on the day was $9,283 which is an outstanding result. Jim thanked the organising committee of Roly, Lionel, Jeff, Craig and Greg for the smooth running of the day and particularly Roly, whose idea it was to have a Golf Day. Jim also thanked those members who helped on the day, particularly the breakfast BBQ cooks who were run off their feet cooking bacon and eggs for the hungry Golfers!!! It is hoped to run another Golf Day in 2023, probably in late September.

Greg advised that the “Lift the Lid” walk for mental health that was to be held in Maleny has been cancelled .

Paulette reminded members that the Maleny Christmas Festival will be held in Maple Street on 9 December. The Club will be running a BBQ outside the Maleny Food Co on the night, as well as storytelling.

Talking of storytelling, Sergeant Chris was back on deck again and was up to his old tricks of fining members for anything and everything - some true and some not so true!!

Phillip introduced the Guest Speaker  Nathan Dodd. Nathan, who lives in North Maleny, is a Level 3 cricket coach. Nathan who hails from Lismore (Go the Blues!!!) had a love of cricket since his early days of playing in his back yard. He eventually moved to Sydney to further his cricket career, playing Grade Cricket for the strong Manly Warringah Cricket Club. He soon realised that he had a talent for coaching, so successfully undertook a level 3 coaching course with Cricket Australia. His first coaching position was with the Sandgate-Redcliff Club, where he enjoyed considerable success. He was then appointed as coach of the Australian Men’s Disability Cricket team. The team consists of men who have an IQ of lower than 75 and with a permanent intellectual disability. He was with the team as they played competitions in many countries around the world. Nathan stressed that Cricket Australia gave the Australian Disability team the same level of support that they give to all Australian Teams, from having the same uniforms to having similar support staff. Nathan said that he really enjoyed seeing the members of the team grow both as cricketers and young men. His coaching career also took him to Nepal, where he was coach of one of the franchised teams in Nepal. He said it was very different coaching a franchise team than it was coaching the national team. As well as playing in front of crowds of 20,000 plus, the franchise owners expected results and didn’t take “no” for an answer. Nathan has also coached the Northern Territory women’s team, and is currently assisting ex Qld Bulls player Chris Wildermuth as he attempts to again play first class cricket.

Jim thanked Nathan for his interesting talk and expressed his delight that there was now another “Blues” supporter in Maleny!!!

 PRESIDENT'S NOTES
Our next meeting at the Maleny Hotel on 16 March  will be a Project/Business Meeting. Subject to any further changes and or the adverse impacts of Covid 19, continue logging in at the Maleny Hotel with your Qld App, but there is now no need to wear masks. We can all look forward to some good fellowship and updates from Directors on our various local and international projects. There will also be a joint presentation by Tim Bagshaw and Donna Hayes about the progress being made by Maleny Hydrotherapy towards the leasing of land, plus the construction and management of a new Hydrotherapy Centre at the Maleny Community Precinct.

- District 9620 Conference in Caloundra 18, 19 and 20 March:
Despite my many calls that the registration date was closing on 7 March, it is still possible to make a late registration for any of the Friday, Saturday or Sunday sessions of the inaugural District 9620 Conference to be held in beautiful Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast from 18th to 20th March. The countdown is really on with only 7 days until opening. I am hoping that as many Maleny Rotarians as possible are able to make the journey down the hill to celebrate the coming together of two great Districts and get to know fellow Rotarians and make new friends within our expanded District in a relaxed atmosphere. Our club is also preparing a static type display for the House of Friendship with an emphasis on our Speak Up Now Stop Domestic & Family Violence & Elder Abuse plus the Maleny Selectors Green project.
If you would like to lend a hand in putting together our display, please give Bernice McL, Sherryl G or myself. I will be collecting and driving the displays down to the Conference on Friday next week to assist Bernice & John  McL with the setting up of the displays in place at 3 pm on 17th March.

- Rotary Youth Driver Education at Corbould Park Caloundra for 2022:
Some great news from Paulette S and Fran T following their attendance at a RYDA Caloundra meeting on 2nd March incorporating Caloundra, Caloundra Pacific, Glasshouse Country and Maleny Rotary Clubs. For the 2022 year, there will be 10 program days with 14 high schools attending at Corbould Park. It will be held in the 3rd & 4th school term. The year 10 students will either have or be very close to having their 'L's by this time of the year. Club contributions are dependent on the number of high schools in their area. Maleny and Glasshouse Country Clubs have one high school in their area and are considered small clubs and will be paying $500 per year toward the program. The Road Safety Education and Department of Transport and Main Roads are coming on board for funding purposes. Maleny State High School is scheduled to attend on 21st July; our Club will be required to assist with the running of the program on some of the days, including when students from Maleny SHS are attending. So please pencil in this date and another in late July for some fantastic youth focused community service. At our last Board Meeting it was resolved to make our payment of $500 towards our membership of RYDA Caloundra.

- Maleny Selectors Green:
Many thanks to Jeff C for organising a team of Maleny Rotary volunteers to undertake a hands on working bee to weed the native shrubs and groundcover beds – removing kikuyu grass, cobblers pegs etc on 7th March. Despite the shocking humidity, it was amazing what was achieved by the team within just 2 hours. The native garden beds are now looking so much better for our team’s hard but caring work. We were ably assisted by Mike Norman from MDSRC and Mark Hutchins who was driving Dave Lowden’s truck to collect all of the grass and weeds removed from the beds. Gail Denver was also on hand to provide a refreshing morning tea. 

 

 - Foundation/ International Queensland and New South Wales Flood Appeal:
I hope we can all reflect on how lucky we are to be residing up here on the Blackall and Conondale Ranges which by and large have been spared from the scars and damage incurred in so much of SE Qld and Northern NSW from the recent rain events.  Unfortunately Craig S’s home was not so lucky, suffering damage from fallen trees. Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS) has registered a Rotary Australia Relief Fund Project which is a national flood appeal to raise funds for assistance to flood victims of Qld and NSW. Donations can be made through RAWCS and are tax deductible.

- Crisis in Ukraine:
In response to the refugee crisis caused by the ongoing war in Ukraine, The Rotary Foundation has decided to prioritise contributions made to the Disaster Response Fund until 30th April 2022 to support disaster response grants to districts affected by these events. These expedited disaster response grants can be used to supply water, food, medicines, shelter and clothing. Half a million people have fled Ukraine and are in dire need of emergency aid.  Rotary Clubs in Europe and around the world have stepped up their relief work, some working on the ground to help displaced families.
The UN estimates that the number of refugees could reach as many as 5 million people being displaced. Our Club's contribution to The Rotary Foundation Disaster Fund will be discussed at a future meeting.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 2ND FEBRUARY
Jim A, standing in in for President Greg who was present but recovering from dental surgery, welcomed members and our Guest Speaker.

Fran T reported that she was in discussions with the River School about a year 5-6 project.  She was also in touch with principals about the Maleny Education Support Fund.

Roly N suggested that flood appeal funds could go to RAWCS.  This may be advertised in the local press.  Craig S said there would be no participation in the Mud Army in Brisbane at the weekend.  It was mooted from the floor that, were the club able to support such activity, then assisting the Gympie area might be a better option.

Our Guest Speaker was Nerilee Sowter from Destiny Rescue. This is a registered charity whose mission is to rescue children from sexual exploitation and human trafficking and help them stay free. This is done through their rescue operations, reintegration programs and prevention efforts. They are active in countries where the need to save is great.

Nerilee's presentation featured the rescue of a young girl in the Philippines. Typically a child’s rescue from the sex trade means nothing if they cannot keep her from falling back into that place of exploitation. The process of keeping her free starts immediately after her rescue by meeting whatever needs she has that allow her to take the first steps toward freedom. Typically she enters a transitional home providing a safe place while a longer-term solution is found.

Nerilee's presentation followed the history of one rescued child with excellent graphics. Craig S gave the vote of thanks.

PRESIDENT'S NOTES
With more movement out and about in Maleny town and some of the cafes and restaurants opening again for more than just takeaway, albeit under strict social distancing conditions, there is a sense that things are getting back to a bit more normal in Maleny. However, we can’t forget that this virus is going to be around for a long while yet.

With this in mind we have been able to acquire 2 boxes of 100ml hand sanitiser (100 bottles altogether) that had been bottled and labelled by District Foundation Chair, PDG Eric Wood, using District Grant funding. Last Thursday, Paulette and I handed over one carton of 50 sanitiser bottles to Ian Demack, President of the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre for distribution in the community.

I have been attending District President’s meetings fortnightly on Zoom. It has been interesting hearing updates not only from the District leaders, but hearing about projects and ways of spicing up club meetings, that other clubs are working on at the moment. Some of these are:
• RC of Mooloolaba are getting organised for their annual “Walk for Mental Health” to raise funds for Australian Rotary Health. This year the 8k walk is on Sunday 11 October. It is a Channel 7 supported event and last year raised $26,680. They are encouraging other clubs to hold a walk in their communities & have offered their support to get it up and running. Maybe we could have a Hinterland Walk?
• Some clubs have held on-line Trivia Nights and one had a “Best-dressed” competition with a case of wine as the prize. Some clubs are holding Facebook raffles.
• RC of Gympie is holding a car rally around Gympie and Kin Kin area.
• In District 9620 they have set up their annual RYLA camp in late November as an alternative to Schoolies Week.
• The Rotary Peace Fellows studying at the University of Queensland are returning to their home countries next month. They did their annual Peace Fellows Seminar on-line this year.

Donations in Kind (DIK) are having to vacate their premises at Kingston and are seeking a new base. They are looking for clubs or individuals who can help clean up the yard before they move. Assistant Governor Jan Lawton has asked if our cluster can get together a team to help with one of the clean up dates - Saturday 27 June most likely. She is hoping for a couple or so from each club if possible. If anyone would be able to assist with things like whipper-snipping and loading up skips, let me know and I’ll contact Jan.

It seems like we will be continuing meeting via Zoom at least to the end of June. Paulette will send out the Zoom Invitation for the next meeting on a Monday. I will send out the Agenda on the Tuesday. Please email me if you would like a spot at the meeting. Anyone who can do magic tricks, sing, dance, play a musical instrument to entertain us is most welcome to a spot to add interest to the meeting. If you have a good travel story for the Memorable Moments segment for the second Wednesday of the month please send a few photos to Paulette to put up at the meeting.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 20TH MAY
A clear agenda from President Sherryl helped all attendees to keep focus on the newsy and interesting snips from all the contributors.

Paulette S gave us some protocol tips for Zoom meetings with a quick tour around the Zoom screen. The most important being the mute/unmute button to eliminate unwanted background noises.    President Sherryl summarised a few points including news that Brian A had got permission and made it to Adavale (in Shire of Quilpie, population 93 people) to join his relatives.

Also, a message from District Foundation Chair, PDG Eric Wood, that hand sanitizer in 2 cartons of 100ml bottles was available for us to distribute.

DG Darryl Iseppi had joined us and gave a quick rundown at District level. He asked us to keep doing our community work at club level and that once the COVID 19 restrictions are lifted, the communities will be looking for leadership to guide them and Rotary can play its part. This will raise our profile and perhaps improve membership by Christmas. Also highlighted the DG newsletter to keep all informed about activities and projects. Mentioned also the virtual International Convention at the end of June which is free to join but we need to register. Finally he talked about the Global Grant for Goroka PNG for approx. $30,000 but still about $5k short so is looking for clubs to consider contributing.

Jim A gave a good historical summary of the Maleny Disaster Fund, emphasising it is the community’s funds, only administered by Rotary. Three persons, namely SES commander, local Police Sergeant and Rotary President make decisions on whether and how much of the funds are to be distributed. The recent tragedy at a rental property in Corks Pocket Rd fitted the criteria and we are pleased that monies were provided to the couple immediately. They are still traumatised but grateful for the community’s support.

CL (with a fantastic backdrop of Dunedin railway station) provided a summary of life under Covid19 in Nepal. Population 29 million. Testing to date 80,000. Thed tests are being administered to those showing likely Covid-19 symptoms. It is difficult to get reliable information. From WHO data: Positive cases: 402. Deaths: 2. Country has been in lockdown since 24 March and this will continue till at least 1 June. Lockdown is enforced by police and military. Impacts of lockdown are felt most by people living in poverty, especially those in the Kathmandu Valley.

RCM's RAWCS women's empowerment project which commenced approximately 3 years ago is now complete. Fifty-eight women have been trained in either sewing skills or computer skills and most are now earning sufficient money to improve their family's life.

RCM's RAWCS women's empowerment project for blind and disabled women is on hold. Blind women in Nepal are seen to have no value. Traditionally a woman in Nepal has value only as a wife and mother. Blind women are often shunned by their families and societies and are left to fend for themselves - often homeless and living in extreme poverty. There are sufficient funds (if exchange rates don't fall too much) in the RAWCS account to implement the project. As soon as the two NGOs, Pahichan and Shed the Light Nepal, are back in operation the project will go ahead. Ten women will receive training and support in various aspects of livelihood development, product making, marketing, communication skills, self-confidence, independent daily living skills, and self defence.
Pahichan will implement the project, STLN will oversee and manage the project at the Kathmandu level. Pahichan's own resources will provide accommodation for the women during the training, provide the training venue, and set up a shop where the women can sell their products. Pahichan will also provide ongoing mentoring and support for the women.

Angela then provided an update on our long running international project – support for the Ebenezer Trust for the construction of the high school in Livingstone Tanzania since 2008. Despite some setbacks and stalled progress, the project is nearly complete which has been a fantastic effort. There was a small shortfall in the RAWCS account for completion but that gap was picked up by Bob and Sue Hall, allowing the completion once the COVID 19 restrictions are lifted. Angela praised the efforts of some fellow club members for the dedication and perseverance, especially CL and Jim A and past member Bob H. We can look forward to the completion and official opening in the near future.
Jim also added his praise and thanked Angela and CL also for their determination and patience over many years to get the documentation compliant to meet RAWC’s project requirements.

Memorable moments. Three members, complete with images presented via powerpoint slides then gave their memorable moments of an event or events in their life. Jeff C spoke of his three bike trips; in India, on Route 66 in the USA and through the West Coast US/ Canada/ Salt Lake City. Fantastic images and plenty of characters in his 2 wheel, noisy convoys.

Paulette S gave us a skydiving trip in Wanaka NZ in 1998, and a blues tour of the US in 2012 with her friend Cate from New York thru Chicago to Memphis.

Sherryl showed us parts of the NT that she and Mike explored as a 50th anniversary present to Bamurru Plains, with day trips to rock art and billabongs in Kakadu, Jabiru and West Arnhem Land, returning each night to their luxurious glamping accommodation.

Well done you three.

Greg W thanked all for their turn up to the Settlers Green gardening session. The edging to the garden beds now completes the Fed Govt grant project. I am pretty sure there were not more than 10 people gathered there, otherwise it would be against the restriction imposed!!

President Sherryl thanked all for their contributions and to look out for the article in the MDSRC newsletter on the history of RCM. She thanked DG Darryl for joining us and we look forward to the District newsletter. Paulette S and Zoom host closed the meeting.

Don't Mess with us old folks

The old lady handed her bank card to a bank teller and said,       "I would like to withdraw $500. The teller told her, "For withdrawals less than  $5,000, please use the ATM.”
The old lady then asked, "Why?”
The teller irritably told her, "These are rules. Please leave if there is no other matter. There is a queue behind you.”
She then returned the card to the old lady.
The old lady remained silent…
But then she returned the card to the teller and said, "Please help me withdraw all the money I have.”
The teller was astonished when she checked the account balance.
She nodded her head, leaned down and said to the old lady, "My apologies Granny, you have $3.5 million in your account and our bank does not have so much cash currently. Could you make an appointment and come again tomorrow?”

The old lady then asked, "How much am I able to withdraw now?”
The teller told her, "Any amount up to $300,000”
The old lady then told the teller that she wanted to withdraw $300,000 from her account. The teller did  so quickly and handed it to the old lady respectfully.
                 The old lady put $500 in her purse and then asked  the teller to deposit the balance of $299,500 back into her account.

UPDATE ON RAWCS PROJECT 7 2016-17 SHED THE LIGHT NEPAL

ROTARY CLUB OF MALENY

At the meeting of 15th November, members were given a great Power Point presentation by Dr CL Claridge on the ongoing Rotary projects with which she has been involved in Nepal.

She was asked if it would be possible to make this available so that all members could look at it again, or for members who were, unfortunately for them, not in attendance could also see it.  A selection of six slides that give an overview of the presentation are shown below.

The Objectives of the project are:
•    To facilitate the social and economic empowerment of women from disadvantaged backgrounds;
•    To develop and implement a range of training programs for women;
•    To develop women’s micro-finance projects;
•    To increase women’s ability to meet the educational needs of their children.

The location of the project is the Handikhola Village Development Area, Makwanpur District, Nepal. This is a very remote area with a sparse population and poor or non-existent facilities. Travel is difficult at all times and impossible in the ‘wet’ season.
At this stage there are 54 women and 5 men involved in the project.

•Sewing skills –30 women (Chepang)

Assembling the treadle machines that have been brought to the remote location by porters.

After training, the new operators are able to produce goods for sale.

Computer Skills Training
Involves 24 females and 5 males  (Bankariya) of whom 18 are school students.
