We’ve been busy again this month!

Maleny Garden Club Spring Fair parking

Our parking prowess was called upon again and the following helped out in the morning up to lunchtime and a couple into early afternoon. Thanks to: Chris, Jim, Roly, Scott, Bruce, Lionel, Jeff, Rick V, Lenah. 

Ulysses RV Club BBQ Dinner

We’ve discovered something else we do well and that is catering! It was a resounding success on Wednesday night catering for 127 people. We provided cheese and biscuits when they arrived (Maleny Cheese donated so much cheese for this, it was fantastic - it must have been Scott’s smile when he went out to see them).

Then we cooked a plethora of different meats on the BBQ and there were three salads and bread rolls to accompany them. It was followed with a dessert of fruit salad and apple slice with custard and ice cream. We had rave comments about the quality and quantity of the meal with the Ulysses RV organiser saying he hoped we made some money for ourselves on the night. We certainly did and I’m sure Jim will be able to tell us soon how much we made from the event.

Our helpers were absolutely fantastic as we each found our niche and we all had a good feed as well. A massive thanks to the following for their invaluable assistance: Bernice and John, Elaine and Jim, Helen and Scott, Fran, James, Neil, Roly, Rick V and Greg.

They held a raffle which raised $800 and all the proceeds of that are going to the MESF fund!

I was hoping to have some photos from the night of us in the kitchen however they haven’t come through in time. Here is one though of the vast crowd we fed!

Upcoming Meetings

Wednesday October 25 - End Polio Now

Remember to wear something RED to the meeting and red outer clothing is preferred.  

Greg will be running this meeting as I’ll be busy in Victoria tasting whisky and wine.

This is a partners’ night so do bring your better half along and let Bernice know please so she can give numbers to the hotel. As mentioned before, Cougar Lutze, is coming to talk with us about what he’s been up to and his plans going forward which include returning to Tanzania.

Wednesday November 22

This is our AGM. Neil AKA The Platypus Whisperer will be our guest speaker and he’ll fill us in about his recent platypus conference at the Healesville Sanctuary in Victoria.

Wednesday December 6

Looks like we will have the owner of a local gin distillery come and have a yarn with us and this will include gin tastings. This evening might go a bit overtime with the tastings.

COMMUNITY GRANTS

The winners of the Community Grants received their cheques at the hotel before our last meeting.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 4TH OCTOBER

President Paulette opened the meeting by welcoming members and guests Chris Paterson from Bamboo Projects, Harvey Bryce and Marvin de Mendonca of Savitrek. Special welcomes to Lenah, Renee and Malcolm who have been unwell.

Bernice congratulated and thanked Jack Wilcox who had compiled a list of all members of our Club together with their years of service.  A copy will be distributed to all members.

Chris B organised his parking roster for the Garden Club Expo on Saturday before carrying out his customary efficient assault on members' cash resources.  

Our Guest Speaker Chris Paterson said that Bamboo Projects was about mateship and support for people with mental health and disability problems.  It is a registered charity with no administration fees, run by his wife and himself as volunteers. They are a registered NDIS provider and organise a cleaning up waterways programme for those at risk.  Chris spoke of the problems of his early life and how he and his wife set up their charity to provide assistance to those in need, as he had been.  He showed a video describing  a typical day out cleaning up rubbish from the banks of a local waterway with his registered assistants. 

Craig S gave the vote of thanks to loud applause.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
 What’s this with so many Rotary members getting bugs/viruses of all descriptions of late? Worst affected has been Renee who got swine flu and had to close her barber shop for about 10 days!! Even though they’re back open this week, Renee is still not 100% and has a really raspy voice. So please support her business as much as possible.

Greg, Neil and myself have all had some kind of illness in the last week too. All on the mend now though! We are referring to it as the ‘Rotary Bug’!

As you all know, Ric Townsend had a major cardiac operation last Thursday after being transferred from SCU Hospital to Prince Charles in Brisbane. He’s bright in spirit although very weak physically still. Most likely, he’ll be in hospital until early next week and Ja and Ric will stay in Brisbane a couple of nights, just in case he should have any sort of relapse. Fingers crossed he doesn’t! I’m sure he’d love to chat with anyone of you want to give him a call.

Wednesday October 25 - End Polio Now 
The Rotary International Day to recognise this highly successful project is on 24th October. Being the day after, I thought it’d be a great idea to recognise End Polio Now with everyone wearing something red on the night. I did hear one member say he might come along in his red pyjamas! If you’ve got a red ‘End Polio Now’ tshirt, certainly wear that or anything red you may have.  Also, let’s hope we can hear from Greg Williams about his adventures in Italia, which were scheduled for September.

A former student at Maleny State High School, who went on to study architecture, and then after feeling confined by the four walls of an office, headed to Tanzania to physically build homes, Cougar Lutz, is coming to talk with us about what he’s been up to and his plans going forward which include returning to Tanzania.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 6TH SEPTEMBER
Rick Vickers opened the meeting in the absence of Paulette, who was unwell.  Actually numbers were down due to Influenza.  Ric Townsend was sporting a new hair cut, which did not escape the notice of Rick V.  I do believe he mentioned something about a lawnmower.   We were also reminded about the Ulysses RV Dinner on 18th October.  We are catering for approximately 130 people at the Show Pavilion, with a BBQ and dessert.  The Zoo parking is well underway, but a replacement is needed for Greg W for Thursday morning.

Chris B spoke about the parking for the Garden Expo on Saturday 7th October, from 9.00am to 4.00p.m. There will be two shifts, 9-12 and 12 to a little bit later.  However, a couple of men will be required around 6.30/7.00a.m. to help get things underway.  Chris will send out the roster next week.

Chris then spoke about the ‘Community Kitchen’ which is held at the RSL on a Wednesday night.  This has been running for 3 weeks now.  On the first night there were 17 people in attendance, the second week ther Pe were nil, and 7 people attended the third week.  

Lionel T informed us the Calendars are on sale.  The cost to members is $5-00, and $6-00 to the public. The Printers who did the Calendar were having a promotion, and we were given 100 free pens, with Rotary marked on them. Bernice suggested that we put one in each bag we present to our guest speakers.

Rick V sadly informed us that Gail Denver is in palliative care in Maleny Hospital. This began when she was a teenager, and this is the third time, each time having been a different type of Cancer.  We certainly keep her and her family in our thoughts and our prayers.

Rick also informed us that 6 out of the 8 applicants for Community Grants were successful……..Naval Cadets, Maleny State School Chaplaincy,  Zonta, Croquet Club,  Historical Society and Hinterland Music.  The money is being returned to local organisations.. Some received more money than they requested to enable them to shop locally. These recipients of Community Grants will be invited to the Maleny Hotel for a presentation at 5.45p.m. on Wednesday 4th October, prior to the commencement of our normal meeting.  A photo will also be taken at this time.  The recipients will be welcome to stay for our dinner and meeting should they wish, but this will be at their expense.

Further to this Rick advised that $500 was donated to ‘Lift the Lid’ for mental health, and $500 to Pain Resolution (this was the cause behind the bike ride that Tim Bagshaw undertook).  The Peace Pole ceremony at the River School will take place on either the first or second Friday in October. 

Jim gave a report on the Golf Day on behalf of Roly.  It was a beautiful day, weather wise, and a successful day all round.  $7,000 was raised.  There were 53 players, but numbers were down on last year.  The Maleny Hotel was incredibly generous, and we received $1,000 from Telstra, through Craig + 4 golf bags.  There were many other supporters/sponsors.  Thank you to all who helped out in the lead-up, and on the day.

Fran gave a brief report on Youth. Apart from four Year 10 students attending the SANTOS Science Experience in January 2024, there is also one Year 11 student attending the NYSF in January. She, with some expert help, will be doing Solar Buddies next term at Conondale State School, and a BBQ and free dress day and a Disco for Years 7/8 at Maleny State High  School.  Fran caught up recently with Cougar Lutze, a former Interact member, who recently spent 11 weeks in Tanzania helping to build a school.

We were advised that approximately 20 people attended the Lift the Lid walk.  One of the young ladies from Toastmasters (a recent guest speaker at our meeting) also attended along with her little one.  It was quite fun and well worth doing.  Sherryl won a bottle of wine.

Sherryl brought in the DV ‘Safe Phone’ box for old working phones.  Already 215 phones have been donated from this area for Speak Up Now.  She also reported on the recent Kite Workshop held at Kenilworth State School.  This was excellent with 16 students from Years 3-6.  It was very windy. The secret is – ‘walk, don’t run in the wind’.  The kites went very high, some ending up in trees.  Others took 10 minutes to wind back in again.  Sherryl now has the next exciting event to look forward to – the kite experience with Chaplain Chris from Maleny State School and 60 students.  Sadly they will not be able to fly them, as you need a 2 hour window to make, decorate and fly them, and the time allocated by the school is not sufficient to allow for take-off.

Ric T spoke briefly about Marvin from SAVITREK at Witta.  He is doing something for the Men’s Shed, and Ric suggested that we may enjoy a tour of the business.  They are making strides in safety and printing industries.  It is exciting new technology, and following the tour we could have dinner in town.  Ric will check it out and talk to Craig. This could certainly make for an interesting vocational night.

As expected, Chris B conducted a very lively fine session, and his story-telling prowess was definitely working well.

Finally, to end, we all had an early night.

PRESIDENTS REPORT

Lunch with Alan Wilson:  We're looking forward to catching up with Alan Wilson at his local Sandstone Point Hotel on Wednesday 30th August. We’ve made a booking for 12 midday so let me know if you can come along. It was decided rather than organize a vocational evening event on this fifth Wednesday of the month, we’d show our support for Alan by meeting him for lunch and catching up on what’s going on. If he could drive at night again, he’d definitely be attending our Rotary meetings as he always did. 

DG’s visit next Wednesday August 23:  As you’re aware, the new DG Paul Roger and his wife Sue are coming to visit our club next Wednesday evening at our meeting. A handful of us got to chat with him when he sat with us at the RUSCCF function in May at the USC. Remember to invite your partner along to this evening as well. Bernice needs to know final numbers to advise the hotel by midday on Tuesday 22nd so make sure you let her know.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 2ND AUGUST
P Paulette opened the meeting by welcoming members and explaining the reason for the new table layout.  There was also a special welcome for Chris B who was our Guest Speaker in addition to his normal duties. She informed us that she would take over the task of organising the monthly Guest Speaker. For our September meeting Ian Pinker and Katrina Udrell from the Glasshouse Country Toastmasters Club will be speaking. Ian has been in Toastmasters for a long time and Katrina joined only a few months ago. So it'll be good to hear their different perspectives on the club and how it has assisted them in work and life.  For October Chris and Kristy Paterson of Bamboo Projects will talk about their registered mental health and disability support charity.

Craig S mentioned that we might consider hosting a lunch meeting on Bribie Island for PP Alan Wilson later in August. Alan is recovering but still cannot attend our dinner meetings because of transport limitations.

Roly reported that arrangements for the Golf Day on 8 September were proceeding well - he would be asking for volunteers to assist on the day itself at the next meeting.

Our Sergeant was then let loose on those assembled with the usual financial pain for his victims. He then seamlessly morphed into our Guest Speaker with only a change of rank.

Chris's chosen topic was Vietnam Veterans Day.. Each year, Australians commemorate this on 18 August. On this day in 1966, one of the fiercest battles of the Vietnam War, the Battle of Long Tan, took place. Over time, this day became synonymous with all those who served and died in the Vietnam War.

Chris started by reminding us of the number of people with contacts to our Club who had served in Vietnam. He described how he and his friends joined the army, his training and his service in Vietnam in armoured cars.  As you can imagine, this was made to sound far more humourous and relaxed than one imagines was actually the case.  His talk was complimented by a background video of his service life in Australia and Vietnam. Chris's tour in Vietnam was just over a year.

He was thanked by acclamation and the meeting closed at 8:30pm.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
- First meeting of new board
It felt so different not having a couple of our regular faces attending board meetings with Bernice and Sherryl absent. For as long as I’ve been on the board Bernice has always been the secretary. As much as I’ll miss not seeing her and the wonderful work she’s done, I’m pleased for her as after over a decade on the board, she can finally take a break. Together with John, they’ve got so many holidays booked to enjoy. We had our new secretary, Michael Gregory, on board and he did a terrific job. We even finished the meeting in just over an hour this month!

- Committees
You may find yourself getting a call about joining a couple of our committees. The Membership committee and the Environment committee are looking for one or two more people to join each. If you would like to join either or even both of these committees, get in touch with Neil re the Environment one or Rick V or Craig re the Membership one.

- Everyone’s contact details are on the updated list that Bernice sent out a couple of weeks ago.

-Interesting Guest Speakers
Who would you like to hear as a guest speaker at our first meeting of each month? If you think you’ve got what it takes to organize a speaker a month for 10 months of the year, I’d like to hear from you. Michael has been finding us our speakers for ten years now and he’s earned a well deserved rest. So, it’s time for someone else to step up and do it. If you think you’d like to give it a go for a while, give me a call. I know some of our members have volunteered suggestions and Michael had found others from third parties or mentions in local media.
Talking about speakers, one of our more recent new members, Bruce Kelly, is going to be regaling us with some tories about his past at our next meeting on 19 July. 

- Welcome back
Greg Williams is back from his trip to Italy and is now sans moustache! Get ready to hear from him about his Italian adventures at our Business Meeting on 23 August. Ciao!

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 5TH JULY

President Paulette opened the meeting by welcoming our guests Scott Wassman (who was to be inducted) and his wife, Helen, and also partners Elaine Atkinson, Kerry Nieper and Judy Tilley, plus our guest speaker, Louise Webber, who is from the eRotary Club of Nurses and Midwives.

Rick Vickers then performed Scott's Induction. Scott was originally from Hawaii; he also had an electrical business in Brisbane, but both he and his wife now work for Queensland Health in Roma. Scott was also President of the Hamilton Rotary Club in Brisbane some years ago. Scott and his wife were welcomed by acclamation. Lionel Tilley will be Scott’s mentor.

Paulette then called forward Elaine A and Kerry N, and invited Mike G to speak.  Mike spoke of the Rotary Foundation’s array of projects that save and invigorate the lives of people around the world, and enhance international friendship and understanding, as today we recognise the lives of two beautiful ladies who demonstrate a shared purpose with the objectives of the Rotary Foundation to build world understanding and peace. We thank Elaine and Kerry for demonstrating in their lives and vocations, a commitment to helping persons in need here and around the world. They were then presented with the emblems of a Paul Harris Fellow – the Certificate and Lapel Pin, for their tangible and significant assistance to others, and to those in need.  We congratulate them both.

Paulette then asked for expressions of interest for the position of Membership/Marketing Director, and also someone to take over producing the Club Program, which would also involve finding one speaker each month.  She reminded us that planting day for the Koala Fodder was on Sunday 16th July.  There are 500 saplings to be planted , with the Council having dug the holes.  The MOU has now been signed.  

Roly N gave a brief update on the Golf Day.  We have 6 registrations so far.

Lionel T advised that the Calendar was going to the printer the following day.  We are using the same Graphic Artist we have used for the last 3 years.  98 photos were submitted.  The Calendar should be available by the end of the second week in August, and selling should commence by the end of August.  A huge ‘thank you’ to Lionel. 

Rick V advised that the Rotary Community Grants will open on the 15th July, and remain open for a period of 2 months.  $2,000 is available for each approved application.  The money is to be spent by the 10th December.

Chris B then conducted his fine session.  No one is safe, and there is no escape.  It is always a fun time.

Sherryl G introduced our Guest Speaker, Louise Webber, from the Global Rotary Club of Nurses and Midwives.  Louise is from Peregian on the Sunshine Coast, and her passion is skin/wound care.  She is a Wound Specialist and runs her own business. She has been a nurse for 30 years.  Due to computer/technical difficulties, Louise could not show us her presentations.  No problem, she talked us through her experiences.  The Global Rotary Nurses and Midwives Club was chartered in 2020 and Louise was asked to join.  They are a young Club and still finding their feet.  Most of the members are based in SE Queensland.  Their current President is based in Tanzania.  You must be a practising Nurse or Midwife to be a member.  Retired Nurses and Student Nurses are not eligible.  Fees are structured.  There are 3 tiers.  Nurses from Australia and developed countries pay a higher fee, whilst some members sponsor Nurses from other countries.  Members include Academics, Professors of Nursing, RN’S, Nurses/Midwives, including some who have worked with Medecins Sans Frontieres and the Mercy Ship, and those who have their own independent business.  They meet once a month internationally, and have a Guest speaker each month.  The logistics are interesting.  The Leadership team also meets once a month.  They also have a close association with the International College of Nurses.  One of the things that Louise noticed at our meeting on Wednesday night was the camaraderie between us, and she loved that.  She commented that they are not there yet, being such a young club, but it is challenging and fun.  They have 42 members from all over the world  -  Australia (WA, NSW and QLD), Mexico, Tanzania, Liberia, UK, Canada, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Rwanda, Malawi and Sierra Leone.  They are in the same District as we are, 9620.  One of their projects is to support Student Turkish Nurses who have lost their families, their homes and their University in the earthquake, and so cannot continue their studies.  They are hoping to raise $15,000.  A fundraiser is being held on the Sunshine Coast, a two day Conference, featuring Specialists on Wound Care, Diabetes, Mental Health, Aged Care and Clinicians.  They have 27 registrations for this. Their strengths are their clinical strengths and education.  They are also working on an International cookbook, with recipes from all over the world, which will sell as an ebook on line.  They support Solar Cases to the tune of $5,000 a year, as they do with Shelter Box.  The funds for Shelter Box are raised through Educational days, run by Louise and another nurse.  A raffle is usually included.  CPD (Continuing Professional Development) days are also run on a Cruise Ship.  These too, will include either a raffle or a Trivia Night. Shelter Boxes have been sent to the Philippines, PNG, and flood areas in N.S.W, as well as Turkey.    Another exciting innovation is the Three C’s Café.  This idea came from the UK. Training was provided for those responsible for running the Café.  They meet once a month, on line, and it is open to Nurses and Midwives all over the world.  It is a Forum for support for Nurses across the word, and a great way to share experiences.  People register via the website for the Three C’s Café, and a link is sent to them.  Networking with Nurses internationally brings home just how lucky we are in this country.  It is quite a diverse Club, but fascinating learning about other cultures.  The Club is always open to new ideas, and Louise especially likes the Calendar idea.  They want people who are passionate about Rotary, and want and need to bring their skills together……….find like-minded people, and explore what they can do.  There were several questions from the floor, and at the end, Fran T gave a vote of thanks.

We can all look forward to a very interesting presentation from local Maple Street business proprietor Larissa Bright. She,in conjunction with the CSIRO, manufactures coral inspired sunscreen for improved UV protection. She also produces and distributes a wide range of 100% Australian made natural vegan skincare products
- Membership:
We shall be inducting a new member Jared Ashcroft as a new member, bringing our number up to 33.Our membership team has been working overtime to ensure everything is in place for a very memorable occasion. We can be assured that our club and Maleny and Sunshine Coast hinterland region will a better place because of his service and fellowship. So it will be a Partner Night.
- Speak Up Now Say No to Domestic and Family Violence(SUN):
Huge congratulations to our Sherryl G, who, along other SUN members, made a very professional hour long presentation regarding the history and focus of the local program and its successes to the Queensland Domestic Violence Prevention Council and the Sunshine Coast Regional Council on November.
- Another Red Seat Bench in Maleny:
Sherryl G and other members of the SUN collaborative partnership attended the unveiling of another Red Bench seat at the Uniting Church on 28 Nov. Many thanks to Malcolm Baker for constructing the red bench.
- Elder Abuse Forum:
And a reminder that our SUN collaborative partnership is holding a second free Elder Abuse Forum at the Maleny RSL on 13th December with a 9am start and all are welcome to attend. Please let Sherryl G or me know if you would like to come along. Everyone who attended the forum last year found it very interesting and helpful, particularly leading into the Xmas/New Year period when many families are together and have the opportunity to discuss and/or are confronted with difficult life choices.
- RC of Glasshouse Mountains PHF Award to Robert Irwin:
We have at least 7 Rotarians and 2 Friends of Rotary set to attend the meeting on 29 November at the Beerwah Hotel and look forward to some great fellowship.
- Our 2021 AGM:
Congratulations to Paulette S on her election as our Incoming President for 2021/2022, and President Elect for 2022/2023 and to the rest of Paulette’s team. We can all be very confident that the Club will be in great hands next year and beyond.
- Our local Grants Program:
It was a pleasure to welcome Ray Stewart, President of Maleny Cultural & Historical Society, together with Jon Gutke, CO of TS Centaur Naval Cadets Support Group and Peter Lavery, President of  Maleny Arts Council along with his wife Jacqueline Lavery and long time Friend of Rotary Judi Ross-Smith to our last meeting for a presentation of their grant monies under our grant program. It was good to hear from them how the grants would be used by their organisations.
- Santos Science Experience:
Another huge congratulation to Fran T for organising and Bernice McL for applying to Santos to fund the attendance of 4 local Maleny State High Student at the Santos Science Experience program in Brisbane during Jan 2022.
- Other date claimers:
Our 2021 Xmas Party will be held on 15 December at the home of Jim and Elaine Atkinson in Lawrence Place. It is a Partners event. But in the event of inclement weather, an alternate venue at the Beersheba Living Museum has been organised.
Our Xmas Tree Lights Display will be at the Uniting Church during the last 2 weeks of December prior to Xmas.
We can expect to hear from Jim A and Roly N very shortly of their plans and a working bee date.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 17TH NOVEMBER
President Greg opened the meeting with a welcome to all Rotarians and our guests from three local community groups. The meeting began with the AGM conducted in quick fire time by Jim Atkinson.  The current Office Bearers remain in place except for the President. The Incoming President and President Elect is Paulette Steele. 

There followed the award of community grants to:

1. The Maleny Arts Council represented by Peter Lavery and Judi Ross-Smith.

Judi said how happy she was that this award would have been close to Chris's heart.

2. The Maleny Historical and Cultural Society  represented by Ray Stewart

 

3.  TS Centaur represented by Jon Gutke

Directors reports

- Fran Tickle said that four current Year 9 students from Maleny State High School have applied to take part in the SANTOS Science Experiment between the 18th and 20th January, 2022.  They will be visiting Queensland University of Technology, Gardens Point at St. Lucia and Griffith University at Nathan.  They will tour scientific facilities, hear from some of Queensland’s leading scientists, participate in hands-on workshops, explore science based careers.  Areas covered include forensic and biological science, chemistry, physics, mathematics, astronomy, environmental sciences and engineering. The students are being sponsored by the Maleny Rotary Club.

- Sherryl Gregory reported that an Elder Abuse Forum would take place on Monday 13 December at 9-12pm at the RSL. All welcome. Complimentary morning tea supplied by CWA and Lions members. RSVP to Sherryl by 6 December for catering purposes.  Very interactive program with content we all need to know.

Speak Up Now's latest resource is a Trifold pocket size Safety card, specifically for the Sunshine Coast Hinterland with loads of contact numbers for multiple services. This has been funded by a Sunshine Coast Council grant.

Four members of The Speak Up Now project committee with representatives from Rotary, Zonta, former Quota members and the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre have been invited to present to the Domestic Violence Prevention Council. This presentation will take place at a D&FV Roadshow at the Novotel Twin Waters on 19 November. This will be followed by a Business Leader’s networking lunch. This is a great opportunity to spread the word of our grass roots service club project up here in Maleny. It is hoped that the DVPV can link us to services and possible sponsorship and funding for future interventions in our community.

- Jeff Cornfoot spoke about Settlers Green. The Children landscape play area is now in place and has been well received by the public.  The organisers are now waiting now for Council to take control. 

- Bernice spoke about parking shifts at Australia Zoo over Christmas holidays.  There was an opportuity for the Club to earn good income. 

- Xmas Lights-Jim and Roly are looking after this.

- Greg reported that the hotel had offered the Club the opportunity to sell raffle tickets for hams on the evening of 3 December from 4.30pm to 7pm. There were three volunteers. 

Rotary Club of Glasshouse are arranging to present a PHF to Robert Irwin who will be the Guest Speaker at their meeting of 24 November at the Beerwah Hotel.

The meeting closed at 8.45pm.

Our next meeting at the Maleny Hotel on 17 November is a Business/Project Meeting. Don’t forget to log in with your Qld App and continue bringing your masks - which can be removed when seated.  I look forward to Jim A taking over the Chair to conduct our AGM and the election of President Elect Paulette S as our Incoming President for 2021/2022 and President Elect for 2022/2023 and the rest of Paulette’s team. We can all be very confident that the Club will be in great hands next year and beyond.

Representatives from each of our 3 successful grant recipient organisations will also be in attendance for the presentation with their grant monies and to inform us of their respective projects and how it will benefit their organisation and our community.

In the meantime, we are all hoping Roly N, Brian A, and Neil A continue with their recoveries.

Maleny Selectors Green Project: A huge thank you to Jeff C, Bill H, and Murray A for joining with me on 8 November for an early start at 7am at Maleny Selectors Green to undertake a further Rotary working bee. 

In what initially looked like being a wash out, we joined with Mike Norman and Dave Lowden to plant out 25 replacement shrubs and groundcovers, plus a 2m tall red flowering North Qld Waratah adjacent to the Rotary Bench at the lower end of the park space.  We also removed the metal garden edging and replaced it with timber edging of the same timber as used by the Maleny Garden Club around the heritage Camelia Gardens. These fellows worked like troopers to get the work done before 11 am.

David Lowden and his work team returned to remove the collected metal and plastic rubbish and a mountain of weeds. They will spread the pile of bark around the lower Rotary bench seat, which will also need some timber edging in due course. Following our recent Board meeting Bernice McLennan is also making inquiries from Lionel Tilley as to the whereabouts of any metal Rotary wheels for installation on all of our benches at Maleny Selectors Green and Mary Cairncross Reserve.

Rotary Centenary in Australia Peace Pole Project:  At 9 am on 12 November, Rick V and I attended a beautiful dedication ceremony for the Rotary Peace Pole at The River School. Rick V commenced proceedings with a background of our Peace Pole project to raise awareness of the need to promote world peace and understanding as our centenary gift as part of an Australia wide project to mark 100 years of Rotary in Australia in April 2021. We were then impressed with the unique contribution from each of the children in speaking about the importance of peace and then reciting in four languages (Spanish, Japanese, Dutch and English) the message of "May Peace Prevail on Earth" and with a circular bench surrounding the Peace pole constructed by one of the fathers, Matthew Penniket. Cr Johnston also gave a fine set of observations about the importance of peace, starting locally. 

For those in the club who want to see where this and other poles are located in Australia, that information is at the website  canberrarotarypeacebell.org.  Once there, press the Peace Pole button on the top banner (with News, Peace Bell, Honour Board etc) and below you will see a chart. Open that chart to see the full list in numerical order of poles, and then go to Peace Pole 129 for the River School Maleny. Unfortunately, Rick V reports that at this stage it is not interactive or visual; it is just a list with some sparse comments. The statement needs to be amended (as it was drafted before the pole had arrived) and a picture added. Judy Fredriksen was also available to take some photos and recorded the speeches for an article in the next edition of the Hinterland Times. Some photos  of the 4 sided 6 ft Peace Pole and surrounding timber sea are attached. Rick V commenced the project with the River School in Maleny during 2020 and I especially want to thank Malcolm Baker who worked with Rick and myself to install the Peace Pole. Some quick facts about the Rotary Peace Pole program: It had its beginnings in 1955 in Japan by Masahisa Goi, in the wake of the destruction wrought by World War II and the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. You can now find more than 250,000 Peace Poles in close to 200 countries in every region and continent on earth. Peace Poles are planted with the Universal Peace Message “May Peace Prevail on Earth”. They symbolise our common wish for a World at Peace. They stand as a silent vigil for peace reminding us to think and act in the spirit of Peace. The Peace message is written in four languages - one for each side panel of the Peace Pole. It was an absolute pleasure to work with our team and Principal Anne Donoghoe and other staff to install the Peace Pole and we can be assured that the students, staff, parents and friends of the school can share reflections of peace throughout the world in this fantastic new Peace Space at the River School.

- Our Xmas Tree Lights Display at the Uniting Church in Maleny will be up and running during the last two weeks of December prior to Xmas. A site has been selected on the eastern side of the Church building with access to power. Jim A and Roly N are working on a lights budget and lighting plan.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 3RD NOVEMBER
President Greg opened the meeting with a welcome to all Rotarians and three guests. He passed on his best wishes on behalf of the Club to Brian Allen who remains in hospital.

The Club's Christmas Party will now be held on 15th December at Jim and Elaine Atkinson's home. 

Selectors Green: Lionel updated the members on the progress with the Kids activity area at Selectors Green. Several large logs and rocks will be delivered this week which will need to be put in place in the “play” area.

Our guest Jared Ashcroft, who is well known in town for his work with the SES and RFS, was planning to raise funds for Beyond Blue by taking part in the Bridge to Bridge run in Brisbane and requested support from the Club.  He also indicated a desire to be considered for membership of the Club.

Sergeant Chris then showed that his spell of sick leave had not blunted his extortion abilities.

Our guest speaker was Shannon Horsfall who is a published children's author. Shannon was awarded the University Medal of Excellence at USC on completing her first class Honours (Creative Writing) and is currently undertaking a PhD in Creative Writin.  She is currently six months into a three-year PhD research project at the Sunshine Coast University. Shannon’s address was titled Writing into the Unspeakable: storytelling trauma and recovery in the aftermath of domestic abuse. Shannon indicated that, whilst there is little reliable data on how many adults grew up with domestic violence in Australia, it was estimated by an ABS survey that before the age of 15 nearly 2.1 million children had witnessed violence towards their mother and nearly 820,000 towards their father. Children in such situations live in fear of their home, feel defenceless and responsible for protecting their mothers and siblings – they are also victims. 

Children normalise the abuse in order to live with it, with the result it silences their experience. To expose these impacts, the positioning of the child within the familial abusive environment requires exploration.  This includes societal assumptions around the roles of women and children in the past, and how the meaning of familial violence has been shaped by dominant social institutions.

Because of the restricted definition of abuse, that is limited to the realm of intimate relationships, children are situated as collateral damage with the result the experiences of children are marginalised or completely unrecognised – they are simply not asked to tell their story on the assumption hat adults know what is best for them. Shannon cited the National Children’s Commissioner, Megan Mitchell, who in 2017 indicated that domestic violence, across all cultures, is a significant risk factor for youth suicides. Shannon’s research project aims to illuminate the necessity for a child to have agency over their lived experience and for their experiences to be heard by the institutions which make decisions on their behalf. Phillip Stark gave the vote of thanks.
