LAST WEEK’S MEETING
Rotarians and guests enjoyed a Vocational Visit to the Gallery on Cairncross last Wednesday evening. This proved to be educational as well as a pleasant social occasion, helped along by drinks and canapés in a very interesting venue. We were fortunate to be there while the newest exhibition of the work of Rex Backhaus-Smith was on display. I think many were tempted by the works, especially some of the ladies (whose husbands tried hard to dissuade them!!!).
However we were there to hear about running the Gallery, rather than purchasing, and Jane Caraffi, one of the owners, led us through some of the sensitivities required when dealing with artists as well as some of the business angles to be considered. In this she had the occasional assistance of her partner Tony Gill who, she assured us, would not be able to resist contributing. Between them they gave a deal of insight into the intricacies of the business which they have run successfully for seventeen years. By the number of questions later posed by the members a good deal of thought was provoked by their address.
Charlotte thanked Jane and Tony for their hospitality and the meeting closed shortly after 8.00pm. Thanks also to helpful stayers who finished off the savouries and assisted with packing up.
