Guest Speaker Summary:
New member, Paul Fisscher stepped in at short notice to give us a snapshot of his recent vocation as a Marriage Celebrant. Paul has been a Rotarian for 25 years and moved to Maleny from Mudgee in January. Paul explained how he had moved to Mudgee from Sydney, where he had worked as a company director.

For 15 years in Mudgee he ran a government-funded organisation employing 35 persons with disabilities. The service provided employment in a recycling business and a commercial laundry.  With 55 staff and a $2 million turnover, the organisation became very successful.

Paul began his career as a Marriage Celebrant 17 years ago and in Mudgee conducted about 60 weddings a year, some in interesting places on farming properties. He explained the role of a celebrant, and how he became to be one and then recounted a lot of funny stories and situations he encountered along the way. He also gave an insight into other aspects of his life such as flying choppers to some of the weddings, and conducting multiple weddings as a member of the Ulysses Club in Mudgee. Paul said that most of the time his job was a happy one and good fun, and he got to taste a lot of good wines.  He explained how the process to be a celebrant has changed and you can now do a course for $1500 with an annual update of 5 hours study.

Now that he is living in Maleny, he is planning to continue his Celebrant role if he can and is doing some investigating to progress this intention.

Today, more than 400 scientists, doctors and technical experts from 75 countries launched the Scientific Declaration on Polio Eradication. The declaration’s launch coincides with the 58th anniversary of the announcement of Jonas Salk’s revolutionary polio vaccine.

The world is closer than ever to eradicating polio, with just 223 cases in five countries last year.

To capitalize on this time-limited opportunity to end
the disease, a wide range of experts have signed the declaration to emphasize the achievability of polio eradication and endorse the Eradication and Endgame Strategic Plan, a new strategy by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) to reach the end of polio by 2018. The scientists and experts signing the declaration include Nobel laureates, vaccine and infectious disease experts, public health school deans, paediatricians and other health authorities.

For additional information about the Scientific Declaration or to view a full list of signatories, please visit the Emory Vaccine Center Website.

"Ï'D LIKE TO SAY A WORD FOR THE FARMERS" (Oklahoma)

Stan Collard was clearing the family archives and found the attached. It was published in a newspaper early in the last century -  author unknown.  Obviously nothing has changed for farmers trying to gain recognition.

NOW FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT

A SENIOR CITIZEN STRIKES BACK!

A member, who wishes to remain anonymous, proffers the following tale from an elderly relative:

Yesterday my niece again asked why I didn't do something useful with my time.   Talking about my "doing something useful" seemed to be her favourite topic of conversation.  She was "only thinking of me" and  suggested I go down to the senior centre and hang out with the guys.   I did this and when I got home last
night I decided to teach her a lesson about  staying out of my business.   I told her that I had joined a parachute club.

She said, "Are you nuts? You 're almost 82 years old and you 're going to start jumping out of airplanes?" I proudly showed her that I even got a membership card.

She said to me, "Good grief, where are your glasses! This is a membership to a Prostitute Club, not a Parachute Club."

"I 'm in trouble again, and I don 't know what to do... I signed up for five jumps a week." I told her.  She fainted.

Life as a senior citizen is not getting any easier but sometimes it can be fun!!
