MINUTES OF MEETING OF 4TH MARCH
Our meeting started on a high note with the induction of new member Phillip Stark with the classification – Local Government Consultant. RV then demonstrated the time capsule that is to be interred for 25 years on 30 June at the RSL. SG informed us that the RI Recreational Vehicle Fellowship is planning a weekend at the Showground over Anzac Day and Club members are invited to join them for ‘Happy Hour’ at 1700 on the Friday. AG reported that the District $100 million dinner held last Saturday was a great success raising over $1.6 million for TRF and already plans are afoot for next year’s event on 27 February 2016 when all five Queensland Districts will be involved.
After an extended ‘coffee break’ AW introduced our Guest Speaker Rich Hungerford ex SAS who has recently set up his own business, Bush Lore Australia in Conondale – a wilderness survival, tracking and bushcraft school. Rich, with the help of descriptive slides, then took us through his story and how he uses the unique skills, like intelligence gathering and tracking, gained in the Army to start a new business. He explained that many hours were spent standing still (pretending to be a tree for instance) and that allowed a lot of time for introspection. He found employment running training courses for security and disaster management teams but became disenchanted when he found that his recommendations were largely ignored. He had always found the bush a source of solace and thought that if this worked for him, maybe it would work for others as well and it was about this time that “Nature Deficit Disorder” was being recognised. It seems that we need regular contact with nature to lead happy lives and increasingly this was being denied to our pressure cooker city lives.
Also Rich recognised that basic survival skills were being lost so the missing could not be found and people found it harder to cope in disasters when power and communication were cut off. So he decided to offer courses where the old and young could share knowledge, make connections, relearn old skills, manage disasters, and survive in a hostile environment. His aim is to reconnect people with nature and act as a repository of traditional skills and knowledge in order to build resilience in individuals, organisations, and communities for the future. Rich offers many programs which can be explored more fully on his website http://www.bushloreaustralia.com.au/frm_display/bushlore-course-listings/ and they generally run for two or three days over a weekend on his 300+ acre Conondale property which backs on to the State Forest. They are particularly geared to family groups although he does run courses for the SES.
MG thanked Rich for his excellent presentation, commenting that we needed him around two years ago during cyclone Oswald, and presented him with our current calendar, our history book, and the Maleny Pot.

NOW FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT
SOME REFLECTIONS ON THE NEWS THAT MY GRANDSON HAS BECOME A LEARNER DRIVER
HAIRCUT
A teenage boy had just passed his driving test and inquired of his father as to when they could discuss his use of the car. His father said he'd make a deal with his son, "You bring your grades up from a C to a B average, study your Bible a little, and get your hair cut. Then we'll talk about the car."
The boy thought about that for a moment, decided that he would settle for the offer, and they agreed on it.
After about six weeks his father said, "Son, you've brought your grades up and I've observed that you have been studying your Bible, but I'm disappointed you haven't had your hair cut."
The boy said, "You know, Dad, I've been thinking about that, and I've noticed in my studies of the Bible that Samson had long hair, John the Baptist had long hair, Moses had long hair, and there's even strong evidence that Jesus had long hair."
(You're going to love the Dad's reply!)
"Did you also notice they all walked everywhere they went?"
