MEETING OF 20TH JANUARY
An excellent roll up of members enjoyed a fairly noisy night with the usual fun with our AV equipment. Visitor Bruce McNaught from the RC Albany Creek gave us a short rundown on the Rotary Global Awards scheme followed by Ric Townsend who spoke of the Vocational Service aspects of Rotary.

Chris, as well as conducting his usual litany of fables and extracting funds from the unsuspecting, hit us all with one of those numbered cards. Melinda won and no doubt will celebrate.

Our guest speaker Nooreen Harris, who is now the Manager of the Maleny Neighbour Centre, gave a most interesting address on her background. Growing up in Kenya in the early 70’s, with an Asian ethnicity and the political unrest in Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya saw the Moslem family migrate to Australia. A month in Melbourne then a transfer to Sydney. Interestingly she mentioned that the education standard was higher in Kenya than Australia resulting in her and her siblings jumping two grades. Her parents realized the conflict of cultures but insisted the children obtain a decent education. She graduated as radiographer & worked in that profession for 12 years.

She maintained her Islamic faith to eventually become the leader in her community for 20 years. Her parents were keen for an Islamic husband & sent her on 3 month trip to Canada & USA where she spread her wings and had a ball. A non-Muslim but very understanding husband eventuated and a daughter ensued. A short workshop at the Theological College in London strengthened her faith and she returned to work within her community to assist those in need.

A move to Brisbane/Caboolture saw her managing the Multicultural Centre there and some months ago she was appointed to the position at the Maleny Neighbour Centre.

Given her interest and work with migrants and refugees and what she has achieved, it appears as though she attended the University of Life rather than a sandstone Uni to develop her many skills.

A great talk.
