MINUTES OF MEETING OF 16TH OCTOBER
An early start at the meeting saw us at the hotel by 6pm. Four members remembered it was Mental Health month & wore hats to remind us. We were joined by Tim Pyne, a visiting Rotarian from Scotland. Sherryl advised of a radio interview with ABC Sunshine Coast covering the results of the recently competed survey on community perceptions of Rotary.
Following the meal we adjourned to the RSL hall for our business session. Rick V. gave a ‘show & tell’ talk on symbols of global significance which centred on one of the most significant – the ‘RED CROSS cross’. We learned of its emergence in Australia in 1914 as a branch of the British organisation and by 1941 it became an Australian entity used for many activities including provision of supplies for our troops in the wars & latterly for assistance with local disasters.
Sherryl updated us on present mental health issues where 20% of Australians will experience a mental health issue in a 12 month period, 45% of the population will experience it during their lives and at least one third of young people have an episode by the age of 25.
Attendee numbers for our 60 years celebration have reached 76 with things well organised for the event. Seeking prizes for the Street Carnival has proven successful with a good response from local businesses. A reminder of the Vocational Visit to the local hospital organised for 30th October with a start time 4pm – hotel meal to follow at 6pm - advise Greg W. if attending. Job Talks will be reintroduced to the Club on the first meeting of the month. Vocational Award exercise to be again considered with a focus on new businesses.
Several invitations have been received – Zonta 100 year celebrations 8 November, Quota 30 year celebrations 10 November, Girl Guides high tea thanks 12 November & Friends of Ebenezer fund raiser 24 November. An opportunity for a Music Festival to be held on the Historical Village site in September 2020 floated for discussion. Our renovations to the Show Food Stall given approval by the Show Society committee.
PRESIDENT'S NOTES
O
The day after the dinner we celebrated World Polio Day. Greg and I were at Landsborough station early in our very conspicuous red End Polio Now shirts to wave through the Polio Train. On that day we had notice from the Global Polio Eradication Initiative partners that wild poliovirus type 3(WPV3) has been eradicated worldwide. WPV3 is only the third inf

This month we also recognised October as Mental Health Awareness month. A few mad hatters donned a favourite hat to Lift the Lid on Mental Health at the October business meeting, and a collection was taken to support our donation to Australian Rotary Health.

As a first in my Rotary experience, I was interviewed on ABC Sunshine Coast radio, relating to the collaboration between the University of Sunshine Coast students and our club, after they had presented the findings of their survey to us. I tried to give the positive message that the culture of Rotary has changed to be more inclusive and flexible in its membership, and that we welcomed people from all walks of life to join in our club projects and to consider membership. Not knowing who was out there listening (if anyone) I was surprised to hear that DG Darryl had in fact been tuned in that morning and caught the interview.
We look forward to finishing off this bumper 5 Wednesday month with our Vocational Visit to the Maleny Soldier’s Memorial Hospital on Wednesday 30 October.
