PRESIDENT'S NOTES
With the dawn of the New Year, I very much look forward to working with you all to make a real difference to changing lives through our service in Rotary. Our next meeting scheduled for the Maleny Hotel on 19 January is a Project/Business Meeting. At this point, but subject to any further changes and/ or the adverse impacts of Covid 19, continue logging in with your Qld App, and bring your masks although they are not required whilst seated to drink and eat. If required, our Secretary Bernice will advise of any further change to meeting protocol early next week.
We can all look forward to a very interesting presentation from Donna Hayes or Tim Bagshaw on behalf of Maleny Hydrotherapy Inc in relation to the Hydrotherapy project being planned for construction and operation at Maleny Sports Park on the Maleny Community Precinct.
Fellowship:
Many thanks to all our members and their partners, and Friends of Rotary and special guests who attended our Xmas and New Years social functions. Its great to see fellowship is alive and well at our Club. Many thanks to Jim and Elaine and Roly and Kerry for a wonderful Xmas party and to Bernice and John McL, Jim A, Roly N, Sherryl G and Paulette S for assisting with preparing and serving our meal and cleaning up after our New Year's function at the MDSRC Clubhouse.
Speak Up Now Elder Abuse Forum:
Congratulation to Sherryl G and all of the SUN collaborative team on holding a very timely and successful second Elder Abuse forum on 13th December from 9am at the Maleny RSL. We can be very proud of the changes being made to community attitudes to Domestic and Family Violence and Elder Abuse on the Range and the bold physical achievements though the installation of 4 red benches in the hinterland and the DV&EA training of so many local hairdressers brought about by this group and particularly the leadership, public appearances and thoughtful contributions by Sherryl G over the past 18 months.
Maleny Street Carnival:
Another huge thank you to Fran T and Sherryl G for joining with me to read childrens' books in Maple Street providing children and parents with a welcome retreat from the many other activities during the event, and also to Paulette S, Rick V, and John and Bernice McL for assisting to collect, erect, dismantle and return the numerous marquees utilised for the event.
Xmas Tree Lights Display themed on Joy at the Uniting Church:
I hope that many of our members, and their families and friends, had the opportunity to visit our Rotary lights display during the week prior to Xmas. A massive thank you to Roly N and Jim A for the planning and installation of the Xmas lights at the Uniting Church and to Roly for its subsequent removal. Jim and Roly took great joy in preparing and installing the display, and Roly's artistic skills were very evident.
Maleny Neighbourhood Centre Xmas Breakfast:
Another huge thank you to Rick V and Jeff C for their assistance in helping me to collect and return many marquees and a couple of BBQs for the breakfast, and to Paulette S for volunteering to meet guests on arrival. The equipment provided was all necessary and well used by volunteers and visitors for a very successful breakfast attended by between 160 and 200 local residents and friends. One issue that springs from our assistance in local events like this is the need to undertake minor repair to many of our community marquees. I hope that we can initiate this as a local Rotary project in the coming months.
Australia Zoo Carparking:
Many thanks to all of our volunteers who helped park cars at Australia Zoo during the Xmas and New Year break. Apart from the opportunity to raise funds for our Club, and to keep visitors to Australia Zoo safe, our service has enabled members to catch up and spend some time with Rotarians from RC of Glasshouse Mountains and also the Caloundra Club.
Rotary Driver Education in Caloundra for May 2022:
I hope to be in a position to provide an update to members in relation to our impending involvement in the RYDA program at Corbould Park during May 2022 after discussions with our local RYDA coordinator Brian Payne in the coming few days.
Maleny Settlers Green:
Our Club should be very proud of our contributions to this collaborative project and its magnificent historical, environmental and amenity outcomes for our community. The Board has recently approved the purchase of Rotary badges to be affixed to the bottom bench at Maleny Selectors Green and also our 4 benches at Mary Cairncross Reserve.
District 9620 Conference in Caloundra 18, 19 and 20 March 2022:
Early Bird registrations close today for the inaugural District 9620 Conference to be held in beautiful Caloundra at the Events Centre from 18th to 20th March. Join me and celebrate the coming together of two great Districts and get to know our fellow Rotarians and new found friends in a relaxed atmosphere. It will certainly be an opportunity to see and hear some amazing speakers changing the lives of others. We are also examining the prospect of a static type display in the House of Friendship with an emphasis on our Speak Up Now Project. If members have any other ideas, please approach any of the Board.
Other Covid 19 Impacts:
Due to the impacts of the Omnicron variant of COVID 19, the Board has also decided not to participate in the DIK service activities on 5th February or in the ROMAC Trivia Night on the 3rd March and I sadly note the cancellation of the Australia Day citizenship ceremony and Hinterland Aussie Day Expo at the Maleny Showgrounds on Australia Day.
MINUTES OF MEETING OF 8TH DECEMBER
President Greg opened the meeting with the acknowledgement of country and welcomed several guests and partners. Fran T introduced the new MSHS Chaplain Donna Turner who gave us a summary of her road to chaplaincy and of the challenges teenagers face today exemplified by her own three. Born in Atherton and schooled in Ravenshoe, she moved to Townsville where her career direction in healthcare was greatly influenced by the untimely accidental death of her sister. Donna strives to build rapport with teachers so that they will refer students to her and emphasises that listening is key. Currently she is only able to work two days a week because of funding constraints and she thanked Rotary and the wider community for their ongoing support for the chaplaincy program.
G thanked Larissa for her excellent presentation, mentioned that she had come to the right place as Maleny is renowned for its entrepreneurs, and presented her with our iconic black platypus bag.
President Greg then closed the meeting.
