MINUTES OF MEETING OF 21ST MARCH
President Alan welcomed members and guests to another bumper meeting. He reported that he and Mary will be attending PETS - the annual President Elect’s Training Seminar next weekend. Angela gave a report on the Rotary International President’s Dinner held recently at the Sandstone Point Hotel.  RI President Ian Riseley, a Melbourne Rotarian, updated the District Rotarians and guests on his year as President and his theme “Making a Difference”.

Rick V gave a brief history of the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve and the significant Rotary Club of Maleny involvement, which led to the official opening by the Governor of Queensland, Sir Henry Abel-Smith, on the 12th December 1960. Work on the reserve was the first major project of the new Rotary Club of Maleny, which had just been chartered on 22 May 1959. Rotarians and their families set out to work on 100 acres of what could be described as scrub, to create paths, and to plant and name significant rainforest trees. The land had been donated by the Thynne sisters, and the reserve was named in honour of their Mother, Mary Cairncross.

Other items before dinner included:
• Roly announced that the next club social event would be a Thai Banquet to be held at the Atkinson’s place on Saturday 14 April.
• Chris reminded members that the annual Wood Expo was coming up at the show grounds on the long weekend of the 5-7 May. All members would be needed to assist with parking duties over the 3 day event.
• We were entertained by a light-hearted video made by our late member and Past President, Gordon Jones, when he was the Commandant of ADFA - the Australian Defence Force Academy in Canberra. Gordon was a highly decorated soldier who rose to the rank of Brigadier in the army. He was a much-loved member of the club, and of the local Maleny community where he moved after his retirement from the Army.
• This was followed by a short video of Superstar Rotary Sergeant Chris, showing how a Rotary Sergeant’s session should be run. Thanks to David for making the videos available to the club.

Guest speaker for the evening was Dr Les Hall, a Maleny resident since 2001, and an awarded naturalist. For 26 years Les lectured in human and veterinary anatomy and conservation biology at the University of Queensland. Prior to this he was employed by the Division of Wildlife Research at the CSIRO in Canberra. In 2015 he was awarded the Natural History Medallion by the Queensland Naturalist Club for his contributions to the knowledge of Australian mammals. Les grew up bushwalking and exploring caves, where he first came across micro bats, setting the course of his life in science.

Les said from the mid 1960s he had been coming up to the Mary Cairncross Reserve looking for and observing birds. In 1968 he gained a Rotary undergraduate scholarship to the US. Les described his long and continuing association with the very special little reserve at Maleny, as well as his accomplishments in authoring and editing several books. An early book on flying foxes (he said he is called the “Batman of Maleny”), led to a significant reference book: A Field Guide to Mammals, on which he has worked with acclaimed photographer and local resident, Steve Parish. He also worked with the Mary Cairncross Management Committee on the book : Birds of the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve, which is now in its second edition.

Les spoke of his most recent project highlighting the flora and fauna of Mary Cairncross Reserve. The A4, 200 page book, due to be out by Christmas this year, not only puts a spotlight on the richness of life in the park, but combines the talents of  Australia’s best bird and nature artists. He showed copies of some of the magnificent paintings that will be included in the book. Some of the notable inhabitants of the park were there- the Paradise Rifle Bird, the Spine-tailed Logrunner, the Eastern Yellow Robin, Yellow-throated Scrub Wren, the Green Catbird, King Parrots, even Brush Turkeys, and many more. Snakes, butterflies, fungi, ferns and trees also feature in the detailed artwork.

Les described the structure of the book which will start at ground level looking at the leaf litter, then looking up to the levels of the canopy, when night falls, and a section on unwanted guests. Information and scientific explanations will be combined with the printed artistry of the natural world of the park. The book will combine the talents and knowledge of many, many people, including Sunshine Coast Indigenous artist and performer, Lyndon Davies, as well as Fran Guard with her fungi knowledge. The book is expected to retail for about $40-50.

Les said that he would like to acknowledge in the book the early and continuing involvement of Rotary Club of Maleny with the park. All members and guests present would surely agree that to have the club associated with the book would be a good opportunity, not to miss.

Sherryl gave the vote of thanks.

GLASSHOUSE MOUNTAINS AND MALENY ROTARY CLUBS DEBATE
This has been scheduled for Monday 23rd April at 6:30 pm at Country Kitchen Landsborough Restaurant with a dinner cost of $25 plus BYO drinks.  The restaurant is next to the police station - whose residents will hopefully not be disturbed.   Maleny will propose the motion that "Wine is better than beer." The rules are that there will be three speakers per team with each speaker allotted three minutes. The time keeper will be Peter Farrell and the judge is still to be appointed. The Glasshouse Mountains will provide a trophy for the winner.
