MEETING OF 19TH SEPTEMBER
The meeting opened with Vice President Michael welcoming members, partners, former member John Chiarotto and special guest DG Wendy Protheroe.

John C recounted that he left for Tasmania some 10 years ago and updated members on his life in the Apple Isle.  Unfortunately he is now a widower and is considering reapplying for a mainland residence permit.

CL reported that the Board had agreed to the establishment of a Maleny Education Support Fund.

Greg W said that he was hoping to finalise a date with a VIP to open the new shade cover for spectators at the High School netball court.

Chris R-S spoke of the Club's involvement with the Maleny Singers production of the Marriage of Figaro in November.  It will be a case of all hands on deck as the profits from the performances will be distributed to our nominated charities - BRCG and Care Flight.

Rick V announced that the Annual Charity Cricket Match was scheduled for 20 October. The Club will sponsor each team's first duck.

Michael G reported that the Board had approved a donation of $3,000 to the Mens' Shed to build a partition between the wood and metal working areas.

After the Sergeant had had his wicked way, Michael introduced the DG.

Wendy's talk was wide ranging:
- covering DIK and her experience unloading "bicycle" wheel chairs in Bougainville
- clean water projects in PNG
- the efforts to revaccinate children in PNG following the confirmation of new polio cases
- her wish for more attendance at the District Conference
- the upcoming change with District amalgamations

Peter McGuirk gave the vote of thanks.

MALENY HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL SOCIETY

AND NOW FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT
A SOBERING TALE

Why Parents Drink

The boss wondered why one of his most valued employees was absent but had not phoned in sick.
So he dialled the employee's home phone number and was greeted with a child's whisper. '

"Hello ?"

'Is your daddy home?' '

Small voice whispered,

' Yes, he's out in the garden ,
'

’May I talk with him?'
The child whispered,

' No .' ;

So the boss asked, 'Well, is your Mommy there?'

Yes she's out in the garden too’

‘The boss asked; 'May I talk with her?'
Again the

No’ .

'Hoping there was somebody with whom he could leave a message, the boss asked, 'Is anybody else there?'

' Yes ,'
whispered the child, '
 a policeman.

'
Wondering what a cop would be doing at his employee's home, the boss asked, 'May I speak with the policeman?'

' No, He's busy , '
whispered the child.

'Busy doing what?'

' Talking to Daddy and Mommy and the police dog men. '

Growing more worried as he heard a loud noise in the background, the boss asked, 'What is that noise?'

' It's a helicopter '
answered the whispering voice.

'What is going on there?' demanded the boss, now truly apprehensive.

' The search team just landed a helicopter '

'A search team?' said the boss. 'What are they searching for?'

Still whispering, the young voice replied with

a muffled giggle....         ' ME '
