MEETING OF 17TH OCTOBER
President Alan was welcomed back from his leave. Guests from The River School, including Principal Anne Donoghue, Year 6 teacher Kerrie Kirwan and two Year 6 students, Obi and Mali, were welcomed to the meeting.

Roly outlined the Gala Event planned to launch the performance of The Marriage of Figaro on the opening night – Friday 9th November. Starting at 5.30pm up on the deck area of the Community Centre, prior to the performance, the cocktail event will be exclusive to Rotarians and partners and their invited guests- and a chance to “dress up” and enjoy a spread of finger food with colleagues and friends. Cost will be $25. Forty people are needed to make the event viable, so please urgently send names to Roly to assist his organisation and ensure the success of the event.

The program for the evening was changed so that we could hear the guest speakers before dinner. Michael G gave some background on The River School which is in Bridge Creek Road, Maleny. The school opened as the Ananda Marga River School in 1995 with 23 students. The school’s name was decided by the children who enjoyed playing in beautiful Bridge Creek that runs through the school. The dedication and passion of the Prout Community- some of whom continue to contribute to the school culture and environment, Ananda Marga Education and numerous Dada’s and Didi’s has shaped The River School to become a leader in Neohumanist educational practices. The school now has over 100 students finishing at year 6. Principal Anne who has been with the school since 2007, was appointed Principal in 2017.

The presentation was ably conducted by the year 6 students, Obi and Mali, who outlined their Garden Project Vision using a power-point presentation. They explained that the school’s neo-humanist values encouraged them “to love and value all things- living and non-living”. They already have an extensive bush tucker and kitchen garden with some produce used in the school tuck-shop. They appealed to the Club to assist them with expanding their garden tool collection and possibly help with obtaining a shed to house the tools and other garden equipment.

They would also like to have some assistance and form a relationship with Rotary Club members to assist with maintenance and expertise in the gardens. Their final message stated their wishes: “for partnering with us towards a shared vision that will see our school gardens become even more productive and sustainable”.  Club members have been invited to visit the school in the near future. Let Michael G know if you are interested. An email has been sent with possible date and times.

Sherryl gave the vote of thanks.

Other Business:
Chris R-S reminded us that it is just 3 weeks until the opening of The Marriage of Figaro. Starring the Maleny Singers with the Maleny Performing Arts Orchestra, it will be a big show, with 22 singers and 22 in the orchestra. Tickets are available at the Maleny Information Centre – cash sales only- $35 for adults, $30 for seniors.

Chris said there are FOUR things that Rotarians can do:
• See the show – preferably on Opening Night.
• Persuade others to see the show.
• Sell the Raffle Tickets – return butts and money at Rotary meeting on 7 November.
• Support and attend the Gala night.

Another appeal was made by President Alan for a member to take the opportunity to step up to be the next President of the Club – for the 2019-2020 Rotary year. Alan is on his second year as president and encouraged members to seriously consider this valuable opportunity to serve the Club and the community in this valued capacity.

Lionel updated members on the sale of the calendars. They are still $5 each and there are plenty left.

President Alan thanked the guests and members for their attendance and duly closed the meeting.

AND NOW FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT
NOT ONLY IN ISTANBUL?

A Mafia Godfather finds out that his bookkeeper Guido has cheated him out of $10,000,000.00.

His bookkeeper is deaf.

That was the reason he got the job in the first place. It was assumed that Guido would hear nothing so he would not have to testify in court.

When the Godfather goes to confront Guido about his missing $10 million, he takes along his lawyer who knows sign language.

The Godfather tells the lawyer, "Ask him where the money is!"

The lawyer, using sign language, asks Guido, Where's the money?

Guido signals back,  "I don't know what you are talking about."

The lawyer tells the Godfather, "He says he doesn't know what you're talking about."

The Godfather pulls out a pistol, puts it to Guido's head and says, "Ask him again or I'll kill him!"

The lawyer signals to Guido, "He'll kill you if you don't tell him."

Guido trembles and signals, "OK! You win! The money is in a brown briefcase, buried behind the shed at my cousin Bruno's house."

The Godfather asks the lawyer, "What did he say?"

The lawyer replies, "He says stuff you.  You don't have the guts to pull the trigger."
