PRESIDENT'S NOTES
July was a busy month for the club. The DG visited and we gave Darryl and Laura a tour of local Rotary projects which reminded me of the amazing number of areas that the club has been involved with in the local community over the years. Thanks to the members who have been involved over the past two weekends in community events on the Range. These were the Velothon Sunshine Coast, the Queensland Cross Country Championships at the Golf Club and the Maleny Wedding Festival at the Showgrounds.

July being a five Wednesday month, we enjoyed a very informative meeting last night at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre in Bicentenary Lane. Thanks to Vocational Director, Greg Williams, who organised the night. We had a tour of the grounds, enjoyed a great meal, and had a presentation about the amazing number of programs operating out of the centre. Described as ‘a welcoming, multifunctional community space in the heart of Maleny, that provides opportunities for community connection and well being for young people, families and the broader community’ the centre has only three paid staff, and many capable and willing volunteers. Shared community lunches every Thursday, the Fix-it Café, emergency relief and accommodation, access to other services who visit the MNC, Maleny Primary School lunch program, counselling, budgeting assistance, are just some of the programs run by the centre. Services also include raising awareness of areas such as Mental health, Domestic Violence and Refugees, and community development projects such as CHASM and EPICC- an inclusive creative learning and socialisation space. The Maleny Flexi-school has space in the Centre providing access to a positive, alternative to mainstream schooling.

The MNC works to reduce hardship in our local area and is committed to supporting community. As a club we have been involved with the MNC in several projects, and we can help as individuals by becoming a member of the MNC (membership is an important aspect when applying for grant funding), being a volunteer- there are many positions available on their website or making a donation. By being on-site to hear all of this last night really reinforced the value of vocational visits. We look forward to another three over this Rotary year of “Rotary connects the world”.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 17TH JULY
President Sherryl opened the meeting by welcoming members, their partners, Guest of Honour DG Darryl Iseppi, his partner Laura and AG Linda. She said that she had taken the DG on a tour of local Rotary projects during the afternoon.  She then spoke of a change in the meeting schedule; the second dinner meeting of the month will become a business meeting with no guest speaker.  This will start in August on a trial basis.

Greg W announced that the Vocational Visit on 31st August will be to the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre with partners welcome. The tour will start at 5pm.

Treasurer Jim said that invoices fo the half yearly dues, which were unchanged, had been issued.

Laurelle informed us that there had been some daylight breakins in Maleny on Sunday.

Bernice asked for additional volunteers for the Velothon.

PP Alan conducted a Paul Harris quiz for which PDG Michael had all the answers.

DG Daryll referred to the Paul Harris Fellowship and how this recognition came to be awarded.  He then,to unanimous applause, presented this award to Phillip Stark.

Sergeant Chris then made a number of unsubstantiated but financially successful claims.

Jeff C then introduced the DG Darryl, who was born in Toowoomba, and completed a Batchelor of Commerce at UQ whilst working for Arthur Anderson. This work involved travel around Australia and in PNG. Since joining Rotoract in 1985, Darryl has had an extensive career in Rotary both at Club and District level.

Daryll noted that this was his fourth Club visit of the week and he was happy that the attendance exceeded the other three meetings combined. He said that he was really interested in seeing what Clubs actually do - he would prefer to visit us as a club working on Show Day rather than a meeting at the hotel.

He spoke of his vision for District to partner club projects based closer to home - such as domestic violence, safe refuge, terminal illness and sick children.

He thanked the Club for its hospitality and had enjoyed the tour of our projects.

Keith R gave the vote of thanks.
