 PRESIDENT'S NOTES
The International theme of this Rotary Year is Rotary Connects the World. I believe that is a really good action theme and as I said at the Changeover, RI President Mark Daniel Maloney believes that “connection is at the heart of the Rotary experience”. Not many people know that Rotary was very much involved in the formation of the United Nations. This year is the 75th anniversary of the signing of the UN Charter and Rotary is the only non government organisation to have a seat on the United Nations, in New York and in Geneva. Of course, closer to home, we have our 60th birthday of the charter of the Maleny Club to continue to celebrate. We are organising a dinner in October to formally mark the occasion. Looking forward to seeing as many members and partners as possible at the meeting this week to welcome the DG Darryl and his fiancé, Laura.
President Sherryl

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 3RD JULY
Our newly minted President Sherryl welcomed members and our Guest Speaker Lisa MacDonald to the first meeting of this Rotary year. She reminded us that the next meeting was the DG's visit.

Malcolm B asked for volunteers to did foundations for the new seats in MCSR.

Bernice asked for people to man check points for Velothon.

Our Sergeant opened his annual account vigourously whilst largely dispensing with the truth.

Malcolm introduced Lisa Macdonald to speak about the Welcome to Maleny group. Lisa has lived 20 years in Maleny; her vocation was teaching. She completed her Master of International Development at Sunshine Coast University and currently works with the Refugee Support Group. She has worked with the Gina-Burra and Kabi Kabi people and also in Nauru in an off shore detention centre, employed by Save the Children. After the contract was terminated by the Government Lisa returned to Australia.

In 2006 Lisa joined a group to look at ways Maleny could support refugees. There are now 180 people on the list across the Sunshine Coast with a core group of 20.  As a non-for-profit group they fund raise and advocate for refugees and are part of National Rural Australia Refugees. They hold “Welcome Days” where refugees from Brisbane come to see Maleny and our region. Music, film and food festivals are key events to integration and have fun. Many events have been organised to celebrate diversity and help transition refugees into their new life here in Australia.

Lisa noted that the “Connections Theme” in Rotary resonated with her and the goals of the Refugee Support Group whichis currently organising and developing a “Home Stay Program”. The group is continuing to grow and they rely on community support and donations predominantly to achieve their goals.

Melinda M gave the vote of thanks to Lisa for her inspirational talk.
