PRESIDENT'S NOTES
If you are a Rotarian who reads Rotary Down Under from cover to cover, you may recall an article in the July edition titled “Do it once- Do it well!”. The article had been submitted by a member of the RC of Bribie Island to highlight the value of Pride of Workmanship Awards, which they hold annually. Our club has held these Awards many times in the past and our award nights were as the Bribie Club describes “the room is always packed with recipients, their colleagues and family members”.

I recall my surprise way back in 1986 when I was teaching at a school on the Redcliffe Peninsula when the RC of Redcliffe City presented me with a Pride of Workmanship Award for Education. While my plaque is showing its’ age (like me) I remember the pride I had in being acknowledged for doing a good job well, and I still do feel pride in that.

Vocational Director Greg is looking into holding a RC of Maleny Pride of Workmanship Award night possibly early next year to avoid clashing with The Glasshouse Small Business Awards.

In the past, some of the focus areas of our awards have been on customer service, emergency services, young employees and innovation. If you have any ideas about a different focus area, and or you would like to be part of the team to assist in the planning for this activity, please have a talk with Greg at the next meeting. This is another way we can connect with our community and bring to life the second Object of Rotary:
“High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society”.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 4TH SEPTEMBER
President Sherryl opened the meeting by welcoming AG Linda, members, visiting Rotarian Greg Raisin and guest speaker Anne-Louise Underwood.

Linda announced that she was going on leave of absence for some time as she was due to have serious heart surgery next month. She was presented with flowers and a signed card and given the best wishes of those attending for a successful outcome and a speedy recovery.

Greg Raisin is a member of the Woden Daybreak Club in Canberra. He spoke of his Club’s projects which were predominantly overseas.

Chris B, as the member for  interstate tourism, gave details on his latest 2,500km outback excursion.  He then changed hats - and character- to Sergeant to inflict some financial pain on members.  Michael G won the raffle.

Greg W introduced Anne-Louise whose topic was Assisted Care System. Anne-Louise had a musical background and has spent recent years as Director & Business Development Manager Woof SMS; in December 2017 she also became Co – Founder/Director & Business Development Manager of Membo Noticeboard.

She began her talk on dementia by describing it as not a normal part of aging. Over 100 diseases cause dementia of which Alzheimers is the most common, accounting for over 50% of cases.  She outlined the other forms of the disease for which there is no cure.  Dementia is the leading cause of death in Australia.  Approximately 450,000 people in the country have dementia and 250 more cases per day are being added. The numbers affected are estimated to exceed one million by 2058.

She then described her personal experience with her 92 year old mother who suffers from complete memory loss but is living independently. Because her mother was anxious not to miss appointments etc, she was phoning her daughter on multiple occasions per day to find an answer to a question.  The reply was immediately forgotten and another similar phone call would be made.  This was extremely taxing and frustrating for our speaker.

Fortunately her husband is a software engineer.  Jointly they have designed and marketed an app for tablets that allows them to provide a daily diary for her mother of those things that she needs to do.  She has confidence in this and it has dramatically improved her quality of life.

The couple have set up a Membo Noticeboard to market this app more widely - see membonoticeboard.com for more details including a video of our speaker.

Keith R gave the vote of thanks for shedding such a clear and personal light on what had been for him, and possibly others present, a dark and not fully comprehended space.
