PRESIDENT'S NOTES
October is a bumper month, not just for our Club, but for the wider world of Rotary.

October is also designated on the Rotary International calendar for Polio Awareness, with World Polio Day on Thursday 24 October. On that day, across the entire SE Queensland train network, is a Train Ride to End Polio event. The Polio train will roll through Landsborough Station at 7.27am on that day. We are planning to have some members at the station to raise awareness of Rotary’s End Polio campaign, and to support the Rotary train travellers. The Club has already donated $1500 in July to the Polio fundraising campaign. If you would like to join us at the station let me know. Red End Polio Now shirts will be available at Wednesday’s meeting.
The other big event this month is our 60th anniversary celebration on Wednesday 23 October at the RSL. Planning is well underway for this event.
MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF 2ND OCTOBER
President Sherryl welcomed all including recent travellers to NW Australia Bernice and John, Roly and Jim. Also welcomed our guest speakers Ryan and Richard from USC and visiting Rotarian Tim Pyne all the way from Kirkcudbright in Scotland. Also welcomed was Melva Elvi as Bernice’s guest.
Members were reminded by Greg W of the Vocational visit to the Maleny Hospital on the fifth Wednesday of the month – Wed 30 October. 4pm start for a tour of the hospital, moving to the hotel at 5.30 for 6pm meal and talk by hospital administrator, and auxiliary representative.
Tim Pyne informed us of some of the projects of his club of 60 or so members. Kirkcudbright is a fishing village which sits at the mouth of the River Dee on its way to the Irish Sea.
Dinner done, Chris B slugged all more than the new Qld car rego increase with fines based on outrageous facts of thinly veiled truths.
Bernice won the blind raffle.
Then Richard Wilson and Ryan McNelly-Smith, two 3rd year town planning students from USC took us through their community survey on attitudes to Rotary. An excellent presentation looking at assumptions, objectives, methods of surveying and some conclusions and recommendations. A general observation was that 60% of Australians were not interested in a commitment to a professional group or community organisation . We shouldn’t be surprised.

• More flexible membership options for time-sensitive persons.
• Diversify projects to more directly impact the age demographic we are looking to attract.
• Rectify current general misconceptions about Rotary, such as the sexist nature of clubs, by participating in events which promote inclusion of minority groups and diversity.
The PowerPoint slides and their full report has been emailed to members. The Board is to discuss the recommendations and present some ideas to members. Melinda Martin gave the vote of thanks.
After a few more announcements from Jim, Michael and Greg, a healthy and typically noisy meeting concluded.
The meeting closed at 8:30pm.

SENIOR'S LOGIC
A SOBERING TALE?
I went to the liquor store Monday afternoon on my bicycle, bought a bottle of Johnny Walker Black and put it in the bicycle basket.
As I was about to leave, I thought to myself that if I fell off the bicycle, the bottle would break. So I drank all the Johnny Walker before I cycled home.
It turned out to be a very good decision, because I fell off my bicycle seven times on the way home.
