PRESIDENT'S NOTES
The Rotary year is whizzing along and this month we have the Club AGM where we need to set in action our club officers for the next Rotary Year. Greg W, as President-elect will be attending a Multi-district Pre-President Elect Training (PETS) in Toowoomba at the end of this month. This is going to give the incoming leaders of the clubs of D9600 and D9630, a taste of what is to come when we combine to form D9620 in 2021.

Last month ended on a high note with our well-planned Vocational visit to the Maleny Soldier’s Memorial Hospital - ‘our’ hospital. What great foresight our Maleny citizens had in establishing the hospital as a war memorial rather than a monument of some sort. We saw Lucy the therapy dog, who we supported through the Community Grants program, in action doing the rounds of the wards. Lucy even came to our dinner meeting afterwards at the hotel (not sure if she chose chips, vegetables or salad?). First time, I believe, that we’ve had a canine on the guest list.
We have received an appreciative email from Louise Hickey, President of the Hospital Auxiliary, expressing thanks for the Rotary hospitality and opportunity to showcase the programs of the hospital.

As Club President, along with other members, I get invited to other organisation’s events. One such event this week was a High Tea at the Girl Guide Hut to thank their sponsors and supporters. It was a very fancy affair, hosted by the Guides themselves, and we not only tucked into some delicious food but participated in guide formalities like the raising and lowering of the Guide flag. It brought back lots of memories for many of us there who were Brownies or Guides a long way back. It gave us a chance to test out the new chairs that the Guide Committee had purchased from our community grants. We can report that they not only look good but are very comfortable as well.

We have had a report from St Jude’s School in Tanzania, that the student who we have supported for many years, Kenedi Lucas, has been accepted into the Institute of Finance Management in Dar es Salaam. He is on his way to a career in Business. We wish him success in his study.

Six club members attended the District AGM, Rotary Foundation Seminar and Youth Showcase at Caboolture last Sunday. It was a productive day. We gained lots of information about both District and Global Grant applications. DG Darryl announced that they are organising a Rotary Friendship Exchange to Chicago in April 2020. Anyone interested can contact Leo Smith by email at secretary@mooloolabarotary.org to register their interest.

Calendar sales are going well, but we need to keep up the momentum. This is one of our major club fundraisers, so all we can do to boost sales means more funds to disperse to meet community needs. The Community Centre kiosk is booked for Saturday 23 November. Please email Jeff C if you can help out on the roster for that day.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 6TH NOVEMBER
President Sheryl opened the meeting with a welcome to members and our two guests. The Club was very pleased to host the Immediate Past President of the Rotary Club of  Goondiwindi, Jamie Clyne and a Past ( and hopefully future) stalwart of our Club, Brian Allen.

Jamie has recently moved from Goondiwindi to Mapleton and is looking to join a local Club. He is involved with RAWCS and recently led a youth tour to Nepal looking at projects supporting local industries in areas that suffered from the recent earthquake. Hopefully we will see Jamie again at a Maleny meeting.

President Sheryl briefed the meeting on a number of local Rotary activities and called on other members for their reports.

Jim attended and reported on the Friends of Mary Cairncross Reserve launch of their beautiful book of drawings and photos of the flora & fauna of the Reserve.

Rick V briefed us on plans to relocate the Club shipping container to the current Barung site in North Maleny. Barung Landcare are moving and the site may be available for local service clubs to set up storage facilities.

Jim mentioned the Maleny Christmas Street Carnival will be on Friday 13th December and he personally guaranteed that it will not rain.

Paulette and Greg covered the work they did in support of the Maleny Commerce Christmas raffle.

The Ebenezer support group are holding a fund-raising ‘Vintage Morning Tea’ on 21 November at The Orangery 10:30 and tickets are $20.

Laurelle covered the Zonta International 100th anniversary dinner held on Friday 8th November. Congratulations to Zonta.

The 2020 calendar sales are going well and we have booked the Maleny Community Centre kiosk on Saturday 23rd November for a sales drive. We need 2-3 more volunteers please. Contact Jeff on 0448 830 030

The Sergeant then entertained the meeting with his usual humour and the preposterous fines.

Being the day after the Maleny Hotel’s Melbourne Cup luncheon there were extra options on the dinner menu and complimentary sweets.

Unfortunately our scheduled guest speakers Kerry & Sarah Hindle from the Maleny High School Interact Club were not able to attend. However Greg Williams was conscripted to give a 5 minute ‘vocation’ talk on the many and varied local organisations that he is actively involved in, including the Neighbourhood Centre, Smart Living Society, MDSRC and Rotary.

Immediate PP Alan Wilson stepped in as the primary guest speaker and gave us an enthusiastic and interesting talk on ‘gold & gems’, specifically sapphires. Alan has recently enjoyed a trip to the CQ gem fields at Rubyvale and he put together an interesting (and valuable) display of gold, cut stones, uncut stones, jewellery and gold.

President Sherryl closed the meeting with a reminder of the upcoming Board meeting, the sausage sizzle roster, the Xmas Street Parade, parking at the Maleny Golf pro-am and calendar selling at the kiosk.
