PRESIDENT'S NOTES
New Year Greetings and welcome to the second half of the Rotary year where we continue to embrace the theme: “Rotary Connects the World”. Our social event last Wednesday at MDSR Building (Beersheba Museum) on the Precinct made a convivial start to the Rotary year. Thanks to Roly and Kerry and their helpers, we not only enjoyed a sumptuous BBQ spread with all the trimmings, but also had a fine time catching up with Rotary colleagues and partners, as well as Friends of Rotary members, and guests. The venue overlooking the precinct was an excellent spot for this social event.

Special guests were Friends of Ebenezer members, Ray and Lorraine Thomas. They travelled to Zambia late last year and spent time at the Ebenezer Orphanage and school. We asked them if they could communicate, while they were there, with the project managers of the current school project, funded by Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS), as well as members of the Rotary Club of Livingstone - our international partners in the project. They did this and reported back in detail to the club and the local Ebenezer Committee, so that we could all get a better picture of the stage of completion of the project.  This was extremely beneficial to us. It was very good for club members to meet Ray and Lorraine in person to find out first-hand how things are going with the project. Not only did they come with an excellent visual display which was projected up on the screen, but kindly gave an impromptu presentation to sum up the highlights of their recent trip. We thanked them with a gift of the recently published book ‘The Magic of Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve’ as well as our Rotary calendar and bag.

The hotly contested Limerick competition was a real hit and a big success. Lots of laughs ensued and it became clear that we had some talented limerick writers in our midst. Thanks to all those who ‘had a go’ and threw their limerick/s into the ring. It was tough going for the judges- Roly and Peter, but three finalists emerged. They were Judy F, Angela G, and Chris R-S. After an encore from these three, Judy Fredricksen was announced by volume of acclamation,   the Inaugural Winner of the Rotary Limerick Competition. Judy was presented with the prestigious (and unique) trophy, which now hangs on the old farm fence post at the entrance to her driveway for the whole street to see and admire. We’ll publish some of the limericks in the next few issues of the bulletin. Other photographs of the event appear below:

2019-20 Rotary National Bushfires Appeal
We all have been horrified, I’m sure, to see and hear of the recent disastrous bushfires in Eastern Victoria, the South Coast of NSW, and the border country in the Kosciusko NP region, and South Australia on top of earlier fires in Northern NSW and Queensland. Lives have sadly been lost and hundreds of properties and homes have been destroyed, with the livelihoods of many people too. Rotary has taken the lead to provide support to families in need. Several Rotary Districts and Clubs have established projects which are able to accept donations from the RAWCS Bushfire Appeal that has been set up.

Donations can be made through the following link:
https://donations.rawcs.com.au/68-2019-20

Our first meeting at the hotel for the year will be a Business Meeting, with the added bonus of the induction of a new member, a Show and Tell segment, and updates on what is happening locally and in the wider Rotary world. We wish District Governor, Darryl Iseppi and his fiancé Laura Diaz all the best for their wedding at St John’s Cathedral on Saturday 11 January.

AND NOW FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT
RACISM AWARENESS MESSAGE

A customer asked, "In what aisle could I find the Guinness?"

The shop assistant asks, "Are you Irish?"

The guy, clearly offended, says, "Yes I am. But let me ask you something,
If  I had asked for Italian sausage, would you ask me if I was Italian?
Or if I had asked for German Bratwurst, would you ask me if I was German?
Or  if I asked for a kosher hot dog would you ask me if I was Jewish?
Or if I had asked for a Taco, would you ask if I was Mexican?
Or if I asked for Polish sausage, would you ask if I was Polish?"

The  shop assistant says, "No, I probably wouldn't."

The guy says, "Well then, because I asked for Guinness, why did you ask me if I'm Irish?"

The  clerk replied, "Because you're in Bunnings."
