PRESIDENT'S NOTES
(a)    Projects and Activities
1.    Club visit by DG Neil Black and AG Jan Lawton
Many thanks to DG Neil Black and AG Jan Lawton for taking their time to visit our club to learn about our many local club projects over the past 60 years together with all of our current local and international initiatives.
2.    Pride of Workmanship Awards
Our Pride of Workmanship Awards Dinner was held at Tranquil Park Maleny on 29th August at Tranquil Park. and presented the club with a great opportunity to reconnect with the roots of Rotary within the local business community through a Vocational Service project , I very much enjoyed sharing a great evening with our nominees, their nominators, our Rotarians and their partners.
3.    Domestic and Family Violence
In a joint collaboration with local Zonta, Quota, and Lions Clubs, newly redesigned Domestic Violence signs have been printed and should be installed at several locations including facilities owned and controlled by Sunshine Coast Council and the Body Corporate of the Riverside Centre in the near future.
With our collaborating partners, a very successful Domestic Violence Forum has also been held at the Maleny RSL on 26 August with highly experienced and knowledgeable speakers from within our Sunshine Coast region. Together, we have taken the first steps to ignite passion and interest within our community for a real grassroots change of culture to Speak Up Now Say No to Domestic and Family Violence.
4.    Upcoming Date Claimers
•    31.08.2020    Hanging the calendar photos from 3pm at Maple 3.  Lionel T would like to remind us that many hands make light work so if a few of you  can turn up to help it would be great – should all be done just after 4pm.
•    2.09.2020 Next meeting at the Maleny Hotel.

•30.9.20 Arrangements for our next Vocational night on 30 September 2020 have been booked with Forest Heart Eco Nursery at Coral St Maleny followed by a possible wine tasting activity after and then a Pizza night -  to be confirmed at our next meeting.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 19TH AUGUST
Members were called to order by Chris Brooker, the Sergeant, at 7.05 and President Greg welcomed everyone following the meeting held earlier between Club Board members and 2020/2021 District Governor Neil Black and Assistant Governor Jan Lawton accompanied by Judy representing Zonta. He also acknowledged Craig Sim (former member of APEX) making his second visit to the Club.

Apologies received from Melinda M, Brian A, Bill H, Michael G, James McG, Paulette S, Keith R and CL C.

President Greg commented how good it was to be back at the Club’s regular meeting place – the Hotel Maleny - with the new table and seating layout for dinner which Chris Brooker and the Hotel had devised to comply with the strict Covid19 seating distance requirements.

Sergeant called all to order following an excellent meal and imposed his usual fines for fact or fiction indiscretions; including a bulk fine for the “all female” table for which purpose Rick Vickers presence was ignored!; and also Chris Ross Smith who for some reason was fined for being speechless when “hiding in the barbers”!

Assistant DG Jan updated the Club about the Ironman event on 13 September and sought volunteers to register as part of the Hinterland Group (not Club Group) to help with organising the 3 sessions: 04.30, 08.30 and 12.30 with likely finish by 3pm.

President Greg urged members to register with the Sergeant to volunteer for car parking at Australia Zoo, for which the Club would be paid – the Club had done this once before and had found it to be an easy and pleasant task.

President Greg invited IPP Sherryl Gregory to take the floor to announce Paul Harris Fellow Recognition for two members of the Club, much to their surprise:

  -    Angela Griffin, for her many years coordination of the Club-sponsored Rotary Australia World Community Service Project 36-2007- 08 – an Education/Skill Development Program resulting in the construction of a new school for the Ebenezer Child Care Trust orphanage in Livingstone, Zambia;

-    Lionel Tilley, in recognition of his commitment to leading the annual competition and production of the Club’s largest fundraising project – the much-loved Rotary Calendar.

Following the presentations, Rick V introduced DG Neil Black who thanked the Club for the whirlwind tour of Maleny and the pre-meeting with members of the Board, who provided him with an insight into the Clubs’ many activities. He acknowledged that these were difficult times for clubs to try and meet and there were only so many zoom meetings one could take!

He congratulated the Club for thinking outside the box and for pursuing innovative projects, such as the successful Blues Concert, which was the idea of Rotarian Paulette Steele. He shared his view that these unique times provided the opportunity to innovate - he felt it was a time to encourage Rotarians to think differently so as to attract new members; and encourage older members to accept change to the rituals of the past which may no longer fit the new environment. It was important though to try and overcome the continuing loss of members and aim for retention of new members. It was important to attract people who wanted to join and stay long term in the Club.

He spoke of the challenge facing our local clubs resulting from the amalgamation of 2 Districts to create one new District 9630 next year; and he expressed his empathy for DG Elect Wendy Prothero for the challenges and size of the job she faced as DG of the new very large amalgamated District. The aim was to make the transition as smooth as possible and achieve an increase in net growth of members through increasing growth of every Club in the new District.

Neil advised that feelers were being put out to try and find Rotarians willing to assume Assistant Governor positions to help Wendy. Maybe members of Maleny Club might be willing to assist. Neil turned to Craig Sim and said he felt Craig would fit in well and joked there was “no pressure”.

Finally, he urged members to attend the Annual Conference in Kingaroy planned for 26 – 28 March 2021 – the final conference for District 9600 and the last one to be held in the Bush.

In closing the meeting President Greg asked members to help with and participate in the many activities planned for the future including the following:
26 August – Combined Service Clubs Forum at RSL focussed on Domestic Violence – 4 speakers – Contact Val France.
29 August – Pride in Workmanship Awards (likely at Tranquil Park) – Contact Alan Wilson.
3pm on 31 August - Hanging 2021 Calendar photographs at Maple 3 – volunteers to help -Contact Lionel Tilley.
13 September – Ironman event at Sunshine Coast – Register as volunteers of Hinterland Club – Contacts ADG Jan Lawton and Chris Brooker.
3 October – Donations in Kind (DIK) container loading – volunteers needed – please advise Bernice.
19 Sep - 4 Oct - Daily car parking at the Australia Zoo – contact Chris Brooker.

In closing President Greg thanked the DG and ADG for visiting the Club and wished them a safe journey back home; he also reminded members of upcoming special birthdays and anniversaries.

The meeting concluded at 2030h.

AND NOW FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT
NOT COVID 19 RELATED
A GOOD NEWS STORY FROM DIFFICULT TIMES

It’s 1932 and Australia is in the grip of the Great Depression.
One in three workers are unemployed.
Decrepit shanty towns hug the outskirts of the big cities.
A scrawny rabbit caught in a trap will feed a family for a week.
Country roads are filled with broken men walking from one farmhouse to another seeking menial jobs and food.
On the outskirts of the South Gippsland town of Leongatha, an injured farmer lies in bed unable to walk – or work.
World War I hero Captain Leo Tennyson Gwyther is in hospital with a broken leg and the family farm is in danger of falling into ruins.
Up steps his son, nine-year-old Lennie.
With the help of his pony Ginger Mick, Lennie ploughs the farm’s 24 paddocks and keeps the place running until his father can get back on his feet.
 How to reward him?
Lennie has been obsessively following one of the biggest engineering feats of the era – the construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
He wants to attend its opening.
With great reluctance, his parents agree he can go.
So Lennie saddles up Ginger Mick, packs a toothbrush, pyjamas, spare clothes and a water bottle into a sack, and begins the 1000+ kilometre trek to Sydney.
 Alone.
 That’s right.
A nine-year-old boy riding a pony from the deep south of Victoria to the biggest and roughest city in the nation.
Told you it was a different era.
 No social media.
 No mobile phones.
But even then it doesn’t take long before word begins to spread about a boy, his horse and their epic trek.
The entire population of small country towns gather on their outskirts to welcome his arrival.
He survives bushfires, is attacked by a “vagabond” and endures rain and cold, biting winds.
When he reaches Canberra he is welcomed by Prime Minister Joseph Lyons, who invites him into Parliament House for tea.
When he finally arrives in Sydney, more than 10,000 people line the streets to greet him.
He is besieged by autograph hunters.
He becomes a key part of the official parade at the bridge’s opening.
He and Ginger Mick are invited to make a starring appearance at the Royal Show.
Even Donald Bradman, the biggest celebrity of the Depression era, requests a meeting and gives him a signed cricket bat.
A letter writer to The Sydney Morning Herald at the time gushes that “just such an example as provided by a child of nine summers, Lennie Gwyther was, and is, needed to raise the spirit of our people and to fire our youth and others to do things – not to talk only.
“The sturdy pioneer spirit is not dead … let it be remembered that this little lad, when his father was in hospital, cultivated the farm – a mere child.”
When Lennie leaves Sydney for home a month later, he has become one of the most famous figures in a country craving uplifting news.
 Large crowds wave handkerchiefs.
Women weep and shout “goodbye”.
According to The Sun newspaper, “Lennie, being a casual Australian, swung into the saddle and called ‘Toodleloo!’”.
He finally arrives home to a tumultuous reaction in Leongatha.
He returns to school and soon life for Lennie – and the country – returns to normal.
These days you can find a bronze statue in Leongatha commemorating Lennie and Ginger Mick.
But Australia has largely forgotten his remarkable feat – and how he inspired a struggling nation.
Never taught about him in school?
 Never heard of him before?
 Spread the word.
We need to remember – and celebrate – Lennie Gwyther and his courageous journey.
 It's a great story.
God knows we need these stories now, more than ever.

PRESIDENT'S NOTES
(a)    Future Meetings under the amended Qld COVID-19 Regulations
The various changes made for our last meeting at the Maleny Hotel on 5 August 2020 have been well received by members, and face to face meetings will definitely continue. We will however further improve our procedures by making separate registration and meal ordering areas on entry to the meeting room.
The club also now has an eftpos machine available for meal payments.

(b)    Projects and Activities
1.    Club visit by DG Neil Black and AG Jan Lawton
The club is honoured and excited to have DG Neil Black and AG Jan Lawton visiting at our next meeting at the Maleny Hotel.  We are arranging a short tour of Maleny commencing at 4.30pm and look forward to showing them the results of our many local club projects over the past 60 years.
2.    Pride of Workmanship Awards
Our Vocational Director Paulette Steele and her energetic team have received 6 nominations for the Pride of Workmanship awards from local businesses and organizations. Some of these have had articles written up in the GCM News.
Invitations will be sent out shortly to our first Pride of Workmanship Awards ceremony and presentation dinner since 2012 being held on Saturday 29th August at Tranquil Park. Meal charges are $35 per head for a 2 course dinner. Partners are welcome.
Nominees don’t pay for the dinner but everyone else does including nominators and partners of nominees if they want to come.
The plaques from the Rotary Club of Pennant Hills have been ordered with engraving.
3.    Domestic Violence Signage Project
In a joint collaboration with local Zonta, Quota, and Lions Clubs, newly redesigned Domestic Violence signs have been collected. Permissions for installation are now being sought at several locations including facilities owned and controlled by Sunshine Coast Council and the Body Corporate of the Riverside Centre. I am calling on several of our male members to volunteer to help place the new signage into Mens Toilet Facilities around Maleny and the hinterland.
A Domestic Violence Forum has been organised for 5.30 PM on Wednesday 26 August at the Maleny RSL with highly experienced and knowledgeable speakers from within our Sunshine Coast region. Numbers are limited and as attendance is by invitation only, please contact Sherryl to advise that you are interested in attending as soon as possible.
The club is also donating some new “Post Office Red” paint to assist with the renovation of the listening seat outside the Post Office and it will have a Rotary Logo added to it along with logos from Quota International, Zonta and the Maleny Mens Shed.
4.    Vocational Visit
Arrangements for our next Vocational night on 30 September 2020 have been booked with Forest Heart Eco Nursery at Coral St Maleny followed by a possible wine tasting activity after and then a Pizza night - to be confirmed at our next meeting.
5.    Solar Buddies Project
Chris B has been in contact with Brian Becconsall from RC Kenmore re purchasing kits through that club for Members of RC Maleny to assemble.
6.    Interact Aprons Project:
Materials have been acquired and club members have met to progress the logistics of cutting out and printing of the Aprons for the Maleny Interact Club.
7.    Maleny Settlers Green Project
In a local broad based collaborative environmental and recreation project with Maleny District Sport And Recreation Club, Maleny Garden Club, Maleny Apex, Maleny Lions, Maleny Cultural & Historical Society and Friends of Pattemore House, our Club has now completed a Commonwealth Community Environment Grant we obtained in the sum of $20,000 to purchase and plant native trees shrubs and ground covers to
(i) establish a wildlife habitat corridor for rare & endangered local endemic & native species linking the nearby Obi Creek riparian corridor, the isolated Porters Wood rainforest, the Northern Wetlands & the Southern Wetlands located on the Maleny Community Precinct.
(ii) use a variety of insect, bird & butterfly attracting host & food plants to provide habitat for rare species.
(iii) establish a designated butterfly garden close to a play area for children.
(iv) create a community education resource for learning about animal / plant relationships including their indigenous names.
(v) compliment the butterfly attracting vegetation program on the adjoining Maleny Golf course.
The grant will now be acquitted.
Lionel T, Jeff C, Roly N, James M and myself have also completed the installation of garden piping on the cordon steel garden border edging on Wednesday 29 July 2020.
Our partner MDSRC has also just received confirmation of a Gambling Community Benefit Fund grant in the sum of $35,000 for the purchase and installation of playground equipment, and investigations are now in progress for the selection of appropriate equipment to match the pioneer settler theme of the park space.
8.    Winter Blues Drive In Concert at Maleny Showgrounds Saturday 18 July20
Our innovative fundraising event has been a massive success for the club on so many fronts. We:-
•    supported our local arts community through payments to our musicians and by making an event such as this available to attend in these COVID 19 impacted times,
•    lifted and hopefully changed and improved our profile within our community through an enormous increase in visits to our website, and likes to our facebook page not just from locals but interestingly from Rotary Clubs worldwide,
•    brought to the hinterland the largest outdoor relocatable electronic screen available in Australia,
•    combined an indoor and outdoor drive in concert,
•    made a profit that we shall use to fund our own Community Grants scheme,
•    increased our club event skills tenfold and above all
•    demonstrated that our club has that entrepreneurial “can do” spirit, that can transform a big dream into a highly successful event. We are reaching out, opening doors and making so many new connections.
Thanks again to our members for their research, hard work, dedication and time to make this event so successful. Further work is now being done to follow up the gathering of feedback from all partners and the community, and to publish further articles about the event in our local media and the Rotary Down Under Magazine.
9.    2021 Rotary Calendar:
The work undertaken by Lionel T and the organising committee has been outstanding, with a record number of entries, despite intervention by the Covid 19 virus. 2000 calendars have been printed and collected and Lionel is calling for volunteers to hang the photographs at Maple 3 on Monday 31 August.
10.    Maleny Park Run
The Board has approve expenditure of $850 toward the Maleny Park Run establishment costs.
11.    Nepal Earthquake Rehabilitation - Womens' Empowerment Training and Business Development Project Phase 1
The project has been completed. We have received the acquittal report from CL and Jim and it has been so rewarding to read of the outcomes provided to so many women in Nepal.  An outstanding project.
12.    Ebenezer School Project
One of our clubs longest running projects has finally come to an end with the completion of the school and its opening for students. Many thanks to so many current and past members for their valuable contributions
13.    Maleny Education Support Fund
The benefits of this combined project to local youth are continuing and we look forward to further updates on the project from CL throughout the year.
14.    Project to mark 100 years of Rotary in Australia
This is currently a work in progress.  I would be pleased if you would put on your thinking caps and we will also be holding a brainstorming session at our club meeting on 15 September to further establish ideas for a 100 year project to celebrate this remarkable Rotary milestone in Australia and other fundraising ideas.
15.    Membership
It has been resolved by the Board on the recommendation of the Membership committee to:
•    seize the opportunity to promote Rotary at any Club activities or with any projects in which MRC has contributed a significant investment.
•    apply for a suitable grant to review/produce a new club brochure and update our social media platforms to produce a high quality social media product, and that MRC quarantine $1000 per year to be used for communication purposes.
•    that three or four members be identified to generate content for promotional purposes.
16.    Presidents Meeting/ Ironman Event on 13 September 2020
I am attending a Presidents Meeting at Yandina today and will report further on the outcomes as soon as possible and in particular in relation to the times required for participation by our member volunteers at the upcoming Ironman Event.
The Rotary Club of Nambour 76 have 6 volunteers for the morning shift from 4.30am till 8.30am.
Jan is seeking assistance from 8.30 till 12.30.pm, and for the next shift from 12.noon till 3pm. We are required to be at the registration area 15mins to register prior to arriving at the gear tent.
17.    PNG Project
Our guest speaker for the 2 September 2020 meeting from Eumundi RC will be speaking on the PNG hospital project
There should be no doubt that our club has risen to the challenge made by RI President-elect Holger Knaack with his new theme for 2020-21, Rotary Opens Opportunities, to:
•     create opportunities that strengthen our leadership,
•     help put service ideas into action,
•     improve the lives of those in need, and
•     create change in the world.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 5TH AUGUST
This was the second dinner meeting at the Hotel since the start of COVID-19 restrictions. The set-up in the dinner room at the first meeting on 15th July was not satisfactory to most of the members. Following that Greg and Chris met with hotel management and the set-up for this meeting was significantly better. Tables were set for four or six and spaced appropriately. The Club’s ‘sheepdog’ and COVID-19 Compliance Officer Chris B was very active nipping at our heels to ensure separation and that members were seated at all times.
We were pleased to welcome two guests – well known locals Craig  Sim of Maleny Communications and Jill Morris.
President Greg opened the meeting with the usual formalities albeit in a mixed order! Meals were served quickly followed by brief reports including:
•    District Grants
•    Domestic Violence Signage Project
•    Pride of Workmanship
•    Maleny Settlers Green working bee
•    Winter Blues concert

The Sergeant Chris, briefly relieved of his ‘sheepdog’ duties, applied a few ridiculous fines.

The programmed guest speakers did not arrive so our guest Craig from Maleny Communications had his arm bent sufficiently to give us an entertaining brief on his experiences as a long term Apex member in several different towns, primarily Mackay and Maleny. It is very evident that Apex members, being a much younger group, get up to a far bit of ‘michief’ while serving the community with their many projects. Craig was thanked by the unprepared ADO Jeff.

Jeff C gave the vote of thanks.

The meeting closed at 8:35pm.

PRESIDENT'S NOTES
(a)    Future Meetings under the amended Qld COVID-19 Regulations post 8 July 2020
Following concerns expressed by several members after our last meeting on the 15 July 2020., Chris B, and myself attended with Hotel management on 31 July 2020 with regard to the set up of our future meetings at the Maleny Hotel commencing Wed 5 August 2020.

We have taken these concerns on Board and can report the following changes:
•    The Maleny Hotel will continue to comfortably sit and provide meals to our members in our usual lounge room location at the Maleny Hotel.
•    The tables and chairs will be re-arranged from the previous format.  Tables for the meeting will be set at 4 per table, using 6 or 7 tables as required.  Distancing will entail 1.5 m from “back of chair” to ”back of chair”. There is ample area within the room for this placement and we viewed the set up format.
•    Members are requested to sign in for Rotary and also for Maleny Hotel at same point. Wrist tags will be self-issued for Hotel patrons at sign in. The sign in point will be at the entry to our meeting room
•    Members are also asked to remain seated except for going to bar and purchasing drinks. The veranda area will be available for our use but members must be seated.
•    This is to comply with latest requirements by Queensland Health that restaurant patrons be seated for drinks and dining.
•    Chris B will be available to be our “sheep dog” COVID 19 Compliance Officer and moving members from bar meeting room.
•    Members are encouraged to pay for their meals (usual price $20.00) on line to Jim A before the meeting and order at same time using the attached menu which members are familiar with to avoid a crush at the entry point to our meeting room which is from inside the hotel. Please confirm your meal choice at entry
(b) Projects and Activities
As mentioned at changeover, RI President-elect Holger Knaack has challenged all of us as Rotarians with his new theme for 2020-21, Rotary Opens Opportunities, to:
•     create opportunities that strengthen our leadership,
•     help put service ideas into action,
•     improve the lives of those in need, and
•     create change in the world.

Despite the continuing and changing difficulties being presented to us all by the COVID 19 virus, our members have kicked off the new Rotary year doing all of these and so much more.
1.    District Grant Approvals
Thanks to the dogged determination of immediate Past President Sherryl Gregory, the Rotary Club of Maleny was successful with 3 District Grant Applications. These grants are allowing us to complete 3 fantastic local projects
(a)    Domestic Violence Signage Project: -In a joint collaboration with local Zonta, Quota, and  Lions Clubs, newly redesigned Domestic Violence signs are now at the printers and will be available for installation in numerous Mens Amenities in and around Maleny and Montville during the next week, and a Domestic Violence Forum has been planned and is being organised for 5.30 PM on Wednesday 26 August 2020 at the Maleny RSL with highly experienced and knowledgeable speakers from within our Sunshine Coast region.
(b)    Solar Buddies Project
An initial project meeting has been arranged for next week.

(c)    Interact Aprons Project: Materials have been acquired and club members are meeting tomorrow to progress the logistics of cutting out and printing of the Aprons for the Maleny Interact Club.

2.    Pride of Workmanship Awards
Our Vocation Director Paulette Steele and her energetic team have been wearing out their shoes attending local Maleny businesses during July 2020 seeking nominations for our Pride of Workmanship Awards. Several nominations have been received with nominations closing on Saturday 1 August 2020. Our first Pride of Workmanship Awards ceremony since 2012 will be held at Tranquil Park Resort at 483 Mountain View Rd Maleny on Saturday 29 August 2020 with the nominees and their guests. Please claim the date in your diaries.

3.    Maleny Settlers Green Project
In a local broad based collaborative environmental and recreation project with Maleny District Sport And Recreation Club, Maleny Garden Club, Maleny Apex, Maleny Lions, Maleny Cultural & Historical Society and Friends of Pattemore House, the Club has now completed a Commonwealth Community Environment Grant we obtained in the sum of $20000 to purchase and plant native trees shrubs and groundcovers to
(i) establish a wildlife habitat corridor for rare & endangered local endemic & native species linking the nearby Obi Creek riparian corridor, the isolated Porters Wood rainforest, the Northern Wetlands & the Southern Wetlands located on the Maleny Community Precinct
(ii) use a variety of insect, bird & butterfly attracting host & food plants to provide habitat for rare species
(iii) establish a designated butterfly garden close to a play area for children.
(iv) create a community education resource for learning about animal / plant relationships including their indigenous names
(v) compliment the butterfly attracting vegetation program on the adjoining Maleny Golf course
The grant will now be acquitted
Despite some Maleny weather, the Maleny Rotary green team of Lionel T, Jeff C, Roly N, James M and myself have also completed the installation of garden piping on the cordon steel garden border edging on Wednesday 29 July 2020.

4.    Parking at Australia Zoo
Several members led by our mercurial Chris B helped out the Glasshouse Mountains Club with parking at Australia Zoo during the first week of the last Qld school holidays.

5.    Winter Blues Drive In Concert at Maleny Showgrounds Saturday 18 July 2020
This innovative event sprung out of the need to inject a shot of confidence into and reward our local community for its compliance with COVID 19 restrictions after so many months of lockdown, and to engage with and provide an opportunity for our local musicians to perform for the first time in over 4 months before a live audience and earn much needed remuneration.
The venture could and would not have happened without a highly motivated and dedicated team working around the clock over an amazingly short 5 week period to collaboratively and cooperatively work with the our local Council, Qld Health, Qld Police, Liquor Licensing and an array of local businesses and sponsors together with our own members and partners to provide and serve food, coffee, and alcohol, safely park cars and undertake all set up , conduct the event , clean and pull down everything in compliance with an absolute hoard of rules and regulations.

Thanks to Paulette S, we engaged a great range of local Blues bands including local legend Kevin Borich Express, Vix & the Slick Chix, The Spirit Blues Band ,and local up and comers Accidently on Purpose and arranged the delivery, set up and use of a mega huge and incredibly clear and bright 50 sq metre electronic screen., and the sound and video engineers. I don’t think I have ever seen more leads, microphones, speakers, musical equipment, cameras and lights be installed so quickly, efficiently, and professionally, and then packed up and removed in the same manner. The backstage team together with the sound and video production were amazing

Melinda M raised an unbelievable $ 8500 from our local Maleny sponsors, Rick V and Chris B weaved magic around and through the COVIT 19 Regs , and on the afternoon set up, during the event and in the clean up on Sunday so many members made a vital contribution to the success of the event. A huge thankyou to everyone who made a contribution.

Hard work pays off. Not only was the weather on the night clear and still, but the event was a raging success. We supported our local community, lifted and hopefully changed our profile within our community through an enormous increase in visits to our website, and likes to our facebook page, made a profit that we shall use to fund our own Community Grants scheme, and above all have demonstrated that our club has that entrepreneurial “can do” spirit, that can transform a big dream into a highly successful event. We are reaching out, opening doors and making so many new connections .

6.    Other Grants:
•    Our Commonwealth Volunteer Grant for equipment: The equipment has been purchased. I am yet to acquit this, but will now do so over the next week or so.
•    COVID19 Community Response Grants Continuity and Connectivity Application COV19CC1116 Form Submitted 1 Jun 2020, 8:06pm AEST- was unsuccessful

7.    2021 Rotary Calendar:
The work undertaken by Lionel T and the organising committee has been outstanding, with a record number of entries, despite intervention by the Covid 19 virus. The printing is done and the Calendars are being collected for distribution. Lionel will provide a further update as to whether any photos can be hung at Maple 3.

8.    Maleny Park Run
Jo Turner has contacted me to advise that she lodged an out and back course on the Precinct for final approval. Council has amended the permit slightly, but ParkRun Australia are in agreement with its terms and I expect her to advise that the Maleny Park Run is approved and signed off in the near future. It is envisaged that Parkrun Australia will raise an invoice for a reduced contribution of $ 850 from the funds that has been set aside for the new Maleny ParkRun to proceed.

9.    Rotary District Project Defibulator
It was great to catch up last Tuesday 28 July with DG Neil Black , AG Jan Lawton and Rotarians from our sister cluster Rotary Clubs to celebrate the Handover of the District Project defibulator to the Beerwah Sports Club.

10.    Nepal Earthquake Rehabilitation - Womens' Empowerment Training and Business Development Project Phase 1
It was fantastic to receive the acquittal report from CL and Jim and to read of the outcomes provided to so many women in Nepal.  An outstanding project.

11.    Maleny Education Support Fund
CL and Angela G have given a glowing report of the benefits of this combined project earlier this month and we can look forward to hearing further about the benefits it has provided to local youth throughout the year.

12.    Project to mark 100 years of Rotary in Australia
As mentioned at our last meeting, I would be pleased if you would put on your thinking caps and contact me or any other member of the board about one or more potential projects to mark this remarkable Rotary milestone in Australia.

I look forward to catching up and sharing some fellowship with you all at our next meeting.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 15TH JULY
President Greg welcomed a good turn out of members and a guest Lyn Dickson to our first dinner meeting at the hotel since March.  He announced that the DG Neil Black, together with his wife and ADG Jan Lawton, will make his official visit on 19 August.  It is planned that he will visit Rotary projects around the town before a Partners Night dinner at the hotel.

Chris B reported that, following his experience at Australia Zoo, he had obtained illuminated batons for traffic direction.

Jeff C said that the plantings at Settlers Green and the steel border edging were complete.  There is still work to do to cover the sharp edges and he called for volunteers.

The District Training Assembly has been fully booked.  Information will be available on line.

The Sergeant made a long awaited return and attempted to recoup the revenue that had been lost over the previous months in a single session.

Final arrangements for the Winter Blues Drive In Concert were discussed.  There was an ovation for the organising committee which had done a huge job on a very short timescale.  Arrangements had been finalised with the State Health Department, Council and the Show Society - the latter had been particularly helpful.
Patrons in the pavilion are limited to 150 and all members working in the pavilion area must complete an online course.
Paulette explained how those parking on the oval could get meals in the pavilion.
Rick said that it was vital that total attendees were kept below 500 - by shutting the oval to parking if necessary.
Greg praised Melinda for the great job in arranging for the screen and sponsorship. He also thanked Paulette for all her work with this project.

Lionel reported that a record number of photographs had been submitted for the calendar and a selection had been made.  Printer proofs were due shortly and sales should start by mid August.

Paulette said that several Pride of Workmanship forms had been handed out and three nominations had so far been received.

President Greg indicated that the Board would be considering a project to mark 100 years of Rotary in Australia.
