MINUTES OF MEETING OF 3rd JULY
President Ric Townsend introduced our guest speakers Gary and Nicky Burke who gave us an interesting overview in relation to Identity Theft.
Gary’s professional journey commenced as a Chartered Accountant, progressing to Financial Controller and General Manager of a firm in Melbourne. Nicky Burke has spent the past two years with Queensland Police Service in their Intel section on the Sunshine Coast. Both Gary and Nicky and other socially minded people operate a community business called Happy Hearts Australia Inc from their Caloundra home. This is a registered charity to educate the community about Identity Theft and Credit Card Fraud with profits going toward worthwhile Australian charities.
Gary presented an interesting talk accompanied by case scenarios on how identity theft can affect everyone in the community. He also explained how easy it is for hackers to obtain our personal identity, with current electronic devices readily available at little cost to the purchaser, by scanning our credit cards and driving licences and passports to obtain all our personal information. This can then be used unscrupulously to empty one's bank accounts. Cases have been known where personal property has been sold unbeknown to the owners.
A demonstration on how easy it is to obtain information from a credit card in a wallet by using a $200 scanner from a distance certainly impressed all present. Several ways to help secure one's identity were explained, such as using metal cases or covers for credit cards and drivers licences, refraining from putting date of birth on internet or facebook, being vigilant in collecting personal mail and not donating to charities who cold call by telephone. It is better for us to call the charity that we wish to support.
Gary and Nicky were duly thanked by Bernice.

This is so much better than the FLU jab.................
Miss Beatrice, the church organist, was in her eighties and had never been married. She was admired for her sweetness and kindness.
One afternoon, the pastor came to call on her and she showed him into her quaint sitting room. She invited him to have a seat while she prepared tea.
As he sat facing her old Hammond organ, the young minister noticed a cut glass bowl sitting on top of it. The bowl was filled with water, and in the water floated, of all things, a condom!
When she returned with tea and scones, they began to chat. The pastor tried to stifle his curiosity about the bowl of water and its strange floater, but soon it got the better of him and he could no longer resist.
'Miss Beatrice', he said, 'I wonder if you would tell me about this?' pointing to the bowl.
'Oh, yes,' she replied, 'Isn't it wonderful? I was walking through the park a few months ago and I found this little package on the ground. The directions said to place it on the organ, keep it wet, and that it would prevent the spread of disease. Do you know I haven't had the flu all winter!'
