MINUTES OF MEETING OF 17th JULY

Meeting nearly held in the corner of the dining room to accommodate the 11 members present.

PIC Simon Walsh, the Manager of Maleny Hotel, gave a short talk on how much the Hotel appreciates Rotary’s patronage and the work for local and international communities. Simon presented President Ric a cheque for $500.

President Ric gave an overview of the Grant’s seminar and the torturous road trip (via Woodford and possibly Petrie) to get there.

Cluster Meeting planned for 5th September at Caloundra Golf Club . This will be the official DG visit.

Treasurer Jim advised of the Board decision to hold fees at $280 pa/$140 six-monthly for the current year.

Youth Director Debreported that the Interact/Bunnings sausage sizzle had been quite successful. Interact have a kindergarten visit looming and they have raffle tickets on sale. Deb also reminded us that Bike Ed is on again at Maleny SS for two weeks from 5th August (Yes it’s that close and a begging email will follow).

Fine session was short and sweet. Mike G won H&T (again).

Bernice introduced Mike and Sherryl as guest speakers about the recent International Convention in Lisbon.

This was their 7th Convention.  The trip to Lisbon took them via Madrid (the airport was part of the adventure apparently) where the attractions are bikinis, bullrings, buildings, beauties in bikinis, beggars not wearing bikinis, bus trips, bling, bridges and more bikinis.  On to Seville for Flamenco dancing and funerals.

Then to Lisbon for the Convention. Bus trip to Lisbon was via olive groves and cork trees but no cows or donkeys (no, I don’t know the significance. I’m just the scribe). Part of Lisbon history involves Expo and Earthquakes.  The Convention Centre was similar to Southbank and the opening was in two sections with
first in, best dressed. It was a family affair with children present and brilliant entertainment.

Monday speakers included an ex child soldier from Uganda who is now a peace advocate.  Tuesday was TRF day (yes, MG was really excited) with a culmination of the Gates Foundation pledging $2 for every $1 Rotary raises for Polio.  Wednesday was a young bloke Craig (didn’t get last name) who at age 11 started a project for children’s welfare. This is now world wide and getting bigger.

Closing ceremony featured more brilliant entertainment eg two blokes playing cello’s and a lass from NZ followed by the Lisbon Symphony Orchestra.

Ask Sherryl about the bus trip to the BBQ attended by over 1000 people. This also featured a Fado night focusing on life, love, lust and living.  Oh and can’t forget the general strike whilst all this was going on.

All Australian attendees wore the 2014 Oz Convention T-shirts but generally confused people who thought they were name tags and everyone was called Sydney.

Mike and Sheryl were given a round of acclamation.  The meeting closed at 8.20 and we all went home to watch State of Origin decimeightion.

NOTES FROM ASSEMBLY OF 23 JULY

Andy Schouteten welcomed back from his holiday. A $10.00,two course meal was served prior to commencement of meeting.

Timely Board Reports
Directors to please have their Board Reports into the Secretary well before Board Meetings to allow circulation of the reports to be read prior to meeting. Remember that we are paying an hourly rent for the use of the hall and if we take unnecessary time to present reports on the night it will cost the club additional rental fees.

Offer of joint venture with Maleny Singers
Chris B to discuss Rotary’s involvement and Bernice to speak with David Edmonds as this could be a good revenue raiser for an International project.

Real Food Festival  7 & 8 September 2013
Rotary to train Swimming Club members the first day (7th) on car parking routine and Swimming Club do the parking themselves the second day (8th).

Bike Ed -  5-16 August at Maleny Primary School

NOW FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT

FROM OUR CRUISING REPORTER

A magician was working on a cruise ship. Since the audience was different each week, the magician did the same tricks over and over again.

There was only one problem: The captain's parrot saw the shows each week and began to understand how the Magician did every trick.

Once he understood, he started shouting in the middle of the show, "Look, it's not the same hat!" or, "Look, he's hiding the flowers under the table!" Or

"Hey, why are all the cards the ace of spades?"

The magician was furious but couldn't do anything. It was, after all, the Captain's' parrot.

Then one stormy night on the Pacific, the ship unfortunately sank, drowning almost all who were on board.  The magician luckily found himself on a piece of wood floating in the middle of the sea, and as fate would have it ... so did the parrot.

They stared at each other with hatred, but did not utter a word. This went on for a day... And then 2 days. And then 3 days.

Finally on the 4th day, the parrot could not hold back any longer and said...

"OK, I give up. Where's the bloody ship?"
