THE RANGE Vol 65 No 14Maleny Hotel at 6:30 for 7:00pm for a Business Meeting.
APOLOGIES
President Paulette welcomed members, our guest speaker Cougar Lutze, and guests from the Maleny Players. Items of business for member’s interest and attention followed:
• Honorary member Jill advertised and invited us to the
upcoming Maleny Players production of Stages- a humorous insight into life’s
joys and tribulations- a product of the Players Club 88 workshops. The
matinee performances will be at The Playhouse, Maleny Showgrounds, on Saturday
17 and Sunday 18 February.
• Paulette advertised an on-line Food Handling course for those
interested. Cost is discounted to $35 for a short time. Anyone handling or preparing food for public sale will eventually need to have this certificate.
• Sherryl reminded members of the Lifeline Bystander
Training course being run by Speak Up Now – our domestic and family
violence awareness and education project with Zonta and the Neighbourhood
Centre. Tuesday 5 March, 8.45 to 1pm at the Neighbourhood Centre. The training
is fully funded by a Sunshine Coast Council grant. Email Sherryl if interested.
• Maleny Film Society are generously hosting a fundraiser
film night and matinee on Saturday 10 February for Speak Up Now. The
film showing will be Shayda and all ticket sales will benefit the work
of Speak Up Now. Postscript: This turned out to be a very successful
fundraiser for Speak Up Now. The film was confronting and certainly heightened
the awareness of domestic violence.
• Fran informed us that another RYDA (Rotary Youth Driving
Awareness) day is coming up at Corbould Park at Caloundra in March involving
all year 10 students from Maleny High and the Flexi-school.
• Paulette advised the club of the Historical Motorcycle
Club’s Swap Meet at the Showgrounds on Saturday 8 March which will involve a
club BBQ catering team to provide food for Friday night and Saturday morning.
Roly will send out a call for helpers.
• Craig gave forward notice that another club Christmas
in July weekend at Yarraman Caravan Park is being organised.
• Fran thanked club members who organised and helped at the
very successful Catholic Church Centenary BBQ Lunch on Sunday 4 February.
• The sergeant, Chris, ran a spirited fine session as usual.
Only a few members escaped without a fine.
Our guest speaker for the night, Cougar Lutze, was paying a second visit to the club. Last November Cougar attended a meeting where he described his three-month experience volunteering at the Satino school at Arusha in Tanzania earlier in 2023. He was inspired by this visit to do more to bridge the gap between education and empowerment of young people there. On his return, he set in motion a process to plan and establish a foundation called the Prospr Foundation. The aim of the foundation is to provide health and education mentorship to enable young people to create small businesses and gain productive employment in their area. Creating quality jobs for the youth is not only a social and economic necessity but also an urgent priority for Africa’s future. The challenge is great, as 60 million young African people are not presently engaged in employment, training or education.
Cougar’s comprehensive visual presentation outlined his dreams and plans for the foundation and included the timeline, vision, foundations, operating principles, business plan, funding goals and specialist help he has engaged. This included specific help for a talented young Arusha man, Abou Mawabe, who is setting up a mentoring and training business. There were several questions, one of which related to the very successful School of St Jude in Arusha, which Australian woman Gemma Sisia established many years ago, and which the club has supported through sponsorship of a student, Kennedi. Cougar said he had reached out to Gemma but as yet he had not heard back from her.

Cougar is returning to Arusha in March for another 3-month stay. We wish him well in this venture and look forward to hearing about the progress of the work of his planned foundation at a future club visit.
