MINUTES OF MEETING OF 17 JANUARY 2024
The first meeting of 2024 was opened by the President who welcomed back members and our visiting Rotarian Kim McDonald-Wilkes from Newfoundland.  The good news was that Kim had kindly volunteered to be our guest speaker; the not so good news is that she and her husband are moving to
Brisbane for work reasons.  It was also good to welcome back Ric Townsend after his recent health problems.  Although his dietary regime may have changed, his analysis and comments are as sharp as ever.

Details of the Vocational Meeting  at Maleny and Hinterland Real Estate on 31 January were confirmed.

Arrangements for the Club's involvement in the Hinterland Australia Day event were outlined.

There was discussion about arranging catering for a visiting group to the Showgrounds next month.  This request will be reviewed.

It was confirmed that the Club will be responsible for parking at the Wood Expo.

The Sergeant then demonstrated his multitasking abilities - he was also Duty Officer but this did not affect his customary ability to inflict some financial pain.  As DO he then introduced Kim McDonald-Wilkes to talk about Newfoundland.  Kim explained the geographical setting of her province is an island in the east of Canada, with Quebec to its west and Labrador to the North. To the east is the Atlantic Ocean all the way to Europe.  It experiences cold winters and cool summers by Queensland standards.

Historically the native population was overtaken firstly by the French and then people from the British Isles. Migrant Europeans were attracted by the cod fishing grounds and whaling.  In the 1700's the wars between England and France led to a reduced French population.  It changed from a British Dominion to a Canadian Province in 1949 and the province now has the highest percentage of English speakers in the country.

Ironically Kim then introduced us to Newfinese, a local dialect. With an excellent audiovisual presentation, she was able to deliver spoken quotations in this language and see how little we were able to comprehend.

Kim was thanked for her lively presentation and wished all the best for her relocation to Brisbane.

The meeting closed at 8:45pm
