We appear to have found another ‘super talent’ besides parking. Catering!! A massive thanks to everyone who assisted at the Historical Motorcycle Swap Meet last weekend. You all did a great job and we’ve received great feedback from the organisers who are more than happy for us to do it again next year. They will be back with dates for next year shortly and then it’ll be up to us to decide if we want to do it again. At a rough guess, we made substantial money from a few hours of effort.
A special thanks to Roly and Kerry for organising all the food and storing it at their home. I understand all we have left is about 40 bread rolls and some soft drinks. That’s a great effort. Considering it was miserable weather, there was still a good turnout and the guys were rushed off their feet from 6.30am to 9.30am. Also, the cricket shed was a lot smaller space than the kiosk on the other oval so I know there was real coordination required so they didn’t trip over one another.
On a sadder note, for which Bernice sent out an email earlier this week about Alan Wilson, it will be a while before he and Mary can attend a dinner meeting so we can recognise the wonderful service he has done for the various Rotary clubs he’s belonged to over many years. He’s home from hospital after having an emergency abdominal operation to remove a cancerous tumor and resting up for the next number of weeks. I’m sure he’d appreciate a phone call from some of you.
Future meetings. On 3 April our guest speaker will be PP Patrice Robinson who lives in Woombye. She is the Director of Australian Rotary Health and will give us an update about what is happening with ARH. On 17 April our business dinner meeting will discuss two of our major functions of the year, our parking duties for the upcoming Woodie’s Expo on the first weekend of May 4/5/6 and the food stall at the Maleny Show on May 31 and June 1.
With President Paulette S enjoying a Steele family re-union event in Adelaide, President-Elect Scott W stepped up to chair the meeting. He confirmed that our newest member Cougar Lutze had departed Qld en route to Tanzania where he will be undertaking his charitable work. He also reported that he had met with Sunshine FM to discuss radio spots to promote Rotary in our Sunshine Coast district, as a member of our Cluster Membership Promotions Sub Committee. Scott also handed out a Membership Analysis Form to all of us to complete and return at our next meeting. Other matters discussed were:
- The Club Constitution is under review by the Board and an amended draft will be sent to all members to discuss, ratify, etc at our meeting in April.
- 2nd Life Line Domestic Violence Training Workshop (organised by SUN): Fran T, John McC and Bernice McC attended the workshop held on 5 March at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre. Over the 2 workshops, 46 local people have received training.
- Motor Cycle Swap Meet for 8 and 9 Mar. Several members have offered and been organised by Roly N to assist with the preparation and sale of food and drinks from the Cricket shed on the Aub Cork Oval

Fran T introduced our
guest speakers Helen Owens and Hannah Lynch – both science students from Maleny
State High School to discuss their recent Rotary assisted experiences.
Helen O passionately recalled her time away at the 8 day National
Science Convention in Melbourne last year where she had the opportunity to meet
and mix with other like-minded STEM students from all over Australia . Helen
shared with us some photos of her experiences.
Helen is very interested in plant/bio engineering , is planning to go to
Uni next year to study biology, and has a far better knowledge of the options
available to her after attending the Convention
Hannah L addressed us in relation to the Santos Science
Experience which took her to Brisbane for 3 days at 3 different campuses – UQ,
QUT and Griffith Uni. Hannah recalled how each campus was different and the professors explained what
they did and why they do it. She was amazed by the UQ Astronomy and the stars
session, and the experiments with chemical reactions in science labs. She made
many friends and was motivated and passionate when discussing her plans to
study medicine after school.
