Rotary Club of Maleny Bulletin for 20th March 2024

THE RANGE Vol 65 No 16

Maleny Hotel at 6:30 for 7:00pm for a Business Meeting plus a Special General Meeting to update the Club's Constitution. This will also be a special meeting to give our thanks and recognition for Angela Griffin’s 32 years of service in Rotary at a total of 5 clubs worldwide. Maleny was her longest-serving club as she came here in 2008. So, it’s an open invitation to partners as I’m sure many would like to come along and thank Angela in person.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
We appear to have found another ‘super talent’ besides parking. Catering!!  A massive thanks to everyone who assisted at the Historical Motorcycle Swap Meet last weekend. You all did a great job and we’ve received great feedback from the organisers who are more than happy for us to do it again next year. They will be back with dates for next year shortly and then it’ll be up to us to decide if we want to do it again. At a rough guess, we made substantial money from a few hours of effort.

A special thanks to Roly and Kerry for organising all the food and storing it at their home. I understand all we have left is about 40 bread rolls and some soft drinks. That’s a great effort.  Considering it was miserable weather, there was still a good turnout and the guys were rushed off their feet from 6.30am to 9.30am. Also, the cricket shed was a lot smaller space than the kiosk on the other oval so I know there was real coordination required so they didn’t trip over one another.

On a sadder note, for which Bernice sent out an email earlier this week about Alan Wilson, it will be a while before he and Mary can attend a dinner meeting so we can recognise the wonderful service he has done for the various Rotary clubs he’s belonged to over many years. He’s home from hospital after having an emergency abdominal operation to remove a cancerous tumor and resting up for the next number of weeks. I’m sure he’d appreciate a phone call from some of you.

Future meetings.  On 3 April  our guest speaker will be PP Patrice Robinson who lives in Woombye. She is the Director of Australian Rotary Health and will give us an update about what is happening with ARH.  On 17 April our business dinner meeting will discuss two of our major functions of the year, our parking duties for the upcoming Woodie’s Expo on the first weekend of May 4/5/6 and the food stall at the Maleny Show on May 31 and June 1.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 20 MARCH
With President Paulette S enjoying a Steele family re-union event in Adelaide, President-Elect Scott W stepped up to chair the meeting.  He confirmed that our newest member Cougar Lutze had departed Qld en route to Tanzania where he will be undertaking his charitable work.  He also reported that he had met with Sunshine FM to discuss radio spots to promote Rotary in our Sunshine Coast district, as a member of our Cluster Membership Promotions Sub Committee.  Scott also handed out a Membership Analysis Form to all of us to complete and return at our next meeting. Other matters discussed were:
- The Club Constitution is under review by the Board and an amended draft will be sent to all members to discuss, ratify, etc at our meeting in April.
- 2nd Life Line Domestic Violence Training Workshop (organised by SUN):  Fran T, John McC and Bernice McC attended the workshop held on 5 March at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre. Over the 2 workshops, 46 local people have received training.
- Motor Cycle Swap Meet for 8 and 9 Mar.  Several members have offered and been organised by Roly N to assist with the preparation and sale of food and drinks from the Cricket shed on the Aub Cork Oval
.- Maleny District Sport And Recreation Club Strategic Planning. Any members interested in assisting as a club delegate or delegate for another local organisation with the development of this plan for our whole community,  please contact Theresa Craig Mob 0419029385 or Cliff Hefner Mob 0419029622 to arrange attendance at the remaining planning sessions or go to the following links:                                   Monday 18/Mar 5pm to 7pm   Link https://www.trybooking.com/CPKYG

Fran T introduced our guest speakers Helen Owens and Hannah Lynch – both science students from Maleny State High School to discuss their recent Rotary assisted experiences.

Helen O passionately recalled her time away at the 8 day National Science Convention in Melbourne last year where she had the opportunity to meet and mix with other like-minded STEM students from all over Australia . Helen shared with us some photos of her experiences.  Helen is very interested in plant/bio engineering , is planning to go to Uni next year to study biology, and has a far better knowledge of the options available to her after attending the Convention

Hannah L addressed us in relation to the Santos Science Experience which took her to Brisbane for 3 days at 3 different campuses – UQ, QUT and Griffith Uni. Hannah recalled how each campus was  different and the professors explained what they did and why they do it. She was amazed by the UQ Astronomy and the stars session, and the experiments with chemical reactions in science labs. She made many friends and was motivated and passionate when discussing her plans to study medicine after school.

Scott W gave a fantastic vote of thanks to our guest speakers and wished them well in their future studies and careers.

Sherryl G and other members of the SUN collaborative partnership attended the unveiling of another Red Bench seat at the Uniting Church on 28 Nov. Many thanks to Malcolm Baker for constructing the red bench.

And a reminder that our SUN collaborative partnership is holding a second free Elder Abuse Forum at the Maleny RSL on 13th December with a 9am start and all are welcome to attend. Please let Sherryl G or me know if you would like to come along. Everyone who attended the forum last year found it very interesting and helpful, particularly leading into the Xmas/New Year period when many families are together and have the opportunity to discuss and/or are confronted with difficult life choices.

We have at least 7 Rotarians and 2 Friends of Rotary set to attend the meeting on 29 November at the Beerwah Hotel and look forward to some great fellowship.
- Our 2021 AGM:

Directors reports
- Fran Tickle said that four current Year 9 students from Maleny State High School have applied to take part in the SANTOS Science Experiment between the 18th and 20th January, 2022.  They will be visiting Queensland University of Technology, Gardens Point at St. Lucia and Griffith University at Nathan.  They will tour scientific facilities, hear from some of Queensland’s leading scientists, participate in hands-on workshops, explore science based careers.  Areas covered include forensic and biological science, chemistry, physics, mathematics, astronomy, environmental sciences and engineering. The students are being sponsored by the Maleny Rotary Club.

- Sherryl Gregory reported that an Elder Abuse Forum would take place on Monday 13 December at 9-12pm at the RSL. All welcome. Complimentary morning tea supplied by CWA and Lions members. RSVP to Sherryl by 6 December for catering purposes.  Very interactive program with content we all need to know.
Speak Up Now's latest resource is a Trifold pocket size Safety card, specifically for the Sunshine Coast Hinterland with loads of contact numbers for multiple services. This has been funded by a Sunshine Coast Council grant.
Four members of The Speak Up Now project committee with representatives from Rotary, Zonta, former Quota members and the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre have been invited to present to the Domestic Violence Prevention Council. This presentation will take place at a D&FV Roadshow at the Novotel Twin Waters on 19 November. This will be followed by a Business Leader’s networking lunch. This is a great opportunity to spread the word of our grass roots service club project up here in Maleny. It is hoped that the DVPV can link us to services and possible sponsorship and funding for future interventions in our community.

- Jeff Cornfoot spoke about Settlers Green. The Children landscape play area is now in place and has been well received by the public.  The organisers are now waiting now for Council to take control.

- Bernice spoke about parking shifts at Australia Zoo over Christmas holidays.  There was an opportuity for the Club to earn good income.

- Xmas Lights-Jim and Roly are looking after this.

- Greg reported that the hotel had offered the Club the opportunity to sell raffle tickets for hams on the evening of 3 December from 4.30pm to 7pm. There were three volunteers.
