PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
What a ton of excitement last weekend was with rain, mud, a bus getting bogged, the generous people and the ones that totally ignored us as they drove past (our comment about them was we hoped they got bogged!).

As we knew would be the case with being able to park fewer vehicles, our takings were down however we still did surprisingly well. I’m sure Jim will let us know what the final figure is once he sorts out the money from the other bits & pieces we received e.g. Aldi trolley token, a penny. Maybe it was all the smiles and helpful information that did it. To those who so generously gave up their time to help with parking in certainly less than desirable circumstances, a massive thank you from me. This bulletin includes Chris’ summary of the weekend, which is well worth a read by all.

Now, we have the Maleny Show to prepare for in just another three weeks’ time. Roly will be addressing this at the meeting and he’s already sent out an email about the soup required; please let him and Kerry know if you’re making some and whether it’s pumpkin or pea and ham,

A reminder the RUSCCF dinner is being held on two Mondays with the closest one to us at Mooloolaba Bowls Club on May 20.  So it’s not being held at the USC as in past years as that got too expensive. Unfortunately, we will not have the opportunity to run the bar as in previous years, for which the profits were donated to the RUSCCF for the scholarships given out. It is an interesting event, particularly learning about the future studies the scholarship recipients are undertaking.

A lineup of guest speakers for our next few meetings is as follows:

June 5 - Peter Griffey - Aquatic Centre - update on this project

July 3 - Syd Shilling - Ecokaps - eco-friendly cleaning products

July 17 - Peter Morley - Shelterbox - talking about ‘Permission to Respond’

August 7 - TBC - Kym Phillips - Moving Made Easy - Downsizing and Decluttering

WOOD EXPO PARKING WRAP
Just some thoughts on how the exercise went.  The number of volunteers was the most we’ve had. Everyone who put their hand up turned up and on time. Most stayed after their official shift ended.

Front gate . . a lesson in diplomacy. Could only allow volunteers, disabled and 4wd vehicles to enter. A few normal cars were let in at different times. People on the front gate had to explain to attendees that there was no parking available for their type of car and to go back into town or nearby streets and try and find a park. Busses were doing loops with pick-ups at High school, Primary school and library. A few ordinary cars jumped the queue and parked on the exit lane but overall worked well. Control of cars and busses was a tad traumatic at times but no accidents, no punch-ups and no one was run over.

Begging buckets. Commendations to all with the buckets. Even though attendance numbers were down, we still collected approx. 50% of last year’s takings. The collectors maintained their calm and pleasant manner to all and were the welcoming face of the Expo.

First main corner. Jim once again excelled himself with his traffic direction and control. Volunteers to their area, 4wd’d down to “the swamp” and disabled to Lionel and John.

Volunteers area. Accolades to Jeff C for his handling of some “demanding” clientele and packing in the cars in their allocated spots. The area doesn’t encourage controlled parking with different lanes and angles but eventually worked well. On the Monday, bloke doing parking there (me) left early to attend to front gate and unfortunately some of the later arriving volunteers parked others in, but we left before the swearing started.

Disabled. As John advised, probably require more signage as some of the non-disabled were parking in the restricted area. Believe Lionel counted approx. 50 spots. Lionel and John also showed calm and direction especially with the Centaur grounds and directing majority of 4wd’s further down.

Horse paddock (The swamp). Full marks to Bruce, Rick V, Greg and James for their handling of a very difficult assignment. There were a few vehicles that had difficulty extricating themselves from the area, but vast majority handled the situation quite well. Picking the best routes in and out and difficult areas for parking was a challenge which all handled well.

Overall, I believe the Club managed a difficult situation and circumstances well and we all deserve the accolades that the Club should receive.

Our guest speaker for the night was Ellice, supported by Brian and Rayna from Maleny Community Kitchen. This not-for-profit group was launched in September 2023 to provide free nutritious meals for community members at the Maleny RSL every Wednesday afternoon from 4.30 to 6.30pm. On this night, they had served 49 people with a 3 course meal. Ellice explained that there was greater need than ever, with the increase in cost of living and rising food insecurity, to support those who are struggling to makes ends meet. They encourage any community member to come to share the meal and meet others in a convivial and supportive environment.

It’s no mean feat to prepare meals each week for such numbers and to also cater for different tastes and dietary needs. All food is donated from local businesses such as the IGA, Woolworths, Maleny Cheese, butchers and other businesses in town. They receive the food on a Monday, work out a menu and prep the meal ready to cook and serve on the Wednesday. They try to keep costs to an absolute minimum. The initiative is supported by the RSL in line with their community welfare aims and they provide their kitchen and premises free of charge to the group. With ongoing committment from the RSL, the initiative could be classed as a sub-committee of the RSL for insurance purposes if needed. When asked what catering experience they had, Brian said he had previously volunteered as a cook at the MNC for 5 years. They share excess donated food with the MNC for their community pantry.

The group have been in contact with the Chaplain at the Maleny State School who informed them of the many families struggling to afford nutritious family meals. This has led them to add frozen take-away meals to their enterprise to be distributed to needy families. To adequately store these frozen meals, they are seeking assistance to purchase a commercial upright freezer. They have been successful in raising some funds and hoped for consideration from the club to also support them financially for this acquisition. After fielding many questions from club members, they were thanked appropriately for their community initiative, enthusiasm and attendance at the meeting.

Sherryl thanks Elliche for her talk

The meeting closed at 8:40pm.
