Rotary Club of Maleny Bulletin for 15th April 2020

"THE RANGE"  Vol. 61 No.19
WEDNESDAY 15TH APRIL 2020

LATEST NEWS
All meetings and Sausage Sizzles have been cancelled until further notice.

PRESIDENT'S NOTES
Easter greetings to all our members and families. I hope everyone is managing as best they can in these unprecedented times, in our lifetimes at least. Can you remember just some months ago when we could stand so close to each other as in the photos here?

They say “take time to smell the roses”. Well we’ve got that time now so let’s make the most of it. Michael and I have been taking more time to look out for the amazing variety of butterflies around at the moment.

Rotary is still in action and clubs are connecting in lots of different ways. The board is meeting next week on Zoom, so I’ll be able to report next bulletin on some of the outcomes of that. The club will still be presenting the schools with books to honour Anzac Day as we have done in previous years.

We have received 11 applications for the community grants, so while we may not be able to enjoy our Community Grant Dinner scheduled for May, as we have done in the past, we will still be processing these applications and funding as many as we can to assist a broad range of organisations on the range. Our fundraising will be severely curtailed this year, with the cancellation of the Maleny Show and the Wood Show and no sausage sizzles to bring in a few dollars. However, we are hoping the annual Rotary calendar will still be produced to boost club and community spirits. I’m not sure if everyone has an IGA Community Benefit number to use when they shop there? Maleny Rotary does benefit financially from those who have assigned the club as their beneficiary. If you don’t have a number and do shop at the IGA ask there about getting a number to link to the Rotary fund.

It is important that members keep abreast of information sent out by Bernice, such as District newsletters, updates from Rotary Health etc. Rick V attended a teleconference last week of a special COVID-19 meeting of the Sunshine Coast Human and Social Recovery Sub-group. The club had been contacted a few weeks ago by the Sunshine Coast Council to see what capacity we had to assist with emerging community needs in this emergency situation. Some of the interesting facts that came out of the meeting (from reading the minutes) are:
• About 21,000 people have signed up in Queensland to be part of the Care Army.
• IFYS (Integrated Family and Youth Services) on the coast is generating 500 meals a day through their Feeding Families Program to deliver across the coast.
•The Department of Housing and Council have secured 125 rooms across the coast for those who are sleeping rough or in an immediate housing crisis.
• A number of national hotel chains have put their hands up to assist rough sleepers.
• The Community Recovery Hotline has received a lot of referrals including 972 for emotional support and 4,276 for practical support as of 7 April.
• The Red Cross reported that many seniors are feeling “helplessness and frustration”.
• The Dept of Housing has had a big demand for the Rental Grant Assistance.
• The Caloundra Community Centre has an issue with USC international students who are struggling to pay rent due to job losses.
• The Maroochy Neighbourhood Centre has had lots of requests for food supplies and food hampers. A key issue for them is finding accommodation for those who are homeless.
• Family and Child Connect had key concerns about escalating family and domestic violence, and an increase in new families that haven’t used support services in the past.

One way we personally could help with food hampers is to donate a couple of items when we shop, to the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre charity bins at IGA and Woolworths. They are looking for items such as pasta, pasta sauce, oatmeal, UHT milk and baked beans.

As I said earlier we now have time to look and admire nature that surrounds us. That’s when we’re not working from home, Face-timing, Messaging or phoning the family, checking the virus updates on the news, reading emails on the computer – and this does take a chunk of time. As Chris B started the ball rolling with some funnies to entertain us, I’ll start the ball rolling with the backyard pic of the week. Check out the reptilian visitor we had at our bird feeder last Thursday.

Stay safe and stay connected to Rotary.

PRESIDENT'S NOTES
If you are a Rotarian who reads Rotary Down Under from cover to cover, you may recall an article in the July edition titled “Do it once- Do it well!”. The article had been submitted by a member of the RC of Bribie Island to highlight the value of Pride of Workmanship Awards, which they hold annually. Our club has held these Awards many times in the past and our award nights were as the Bribie Club describes “the room is always packed with recipients, their colleagues and family members”.

I recall my surprise way back in 1986 when I was teaching at a school on the Redcliffe Peninsula when the RC of Redcliffe City presented me with a Pride of Workmanship Award for Education. While my plaque is showing its’ age (like me) I remember the pride I had in being acknowledged for doing a good job well, and I still do feel pride in that.

Vocational Director Greg is looking into holding a RC of Maleny Pride of Workmanship Award night possibly early next year to avoid clashing with The Glasshouse Small Business Awards.

In the past, some of the focus areas of our awards have been on customer service, emergency services, young employees and innovation. If you have any ideas about a different focus area, and or you would like to be part of the team to assist in the planning for this activity, please have a talk with Greg at the next meeting. This is another way we can connect with our community and bring to life the second Object of Rotary:
“High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society”.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 4TH SEPTEMBER
President Sherryl opened the meeting by welcoming AG Linda, members, visiting Rotarian Greg Raisin and guest speaker Anne-Louise Underwood.

Linda announced that she was going on leave of absence for some time as she was due to have serious heart surgery next month. She was presented with flowers and a signed card and given the best wishes of those attending for a successful outcome and a speedy recovery.

Greg Raisin is a member of the Woden Daybreak Club in Canberra. He spoke of his Club’s projects which were predominantly overseas.

Chris B, as the member for  interstate tourism, gave details on his latest 2,500km outback excursion.  He then changed hats - and character- to Sergeant to inflict some financial pain on members.  Michael G won the raffle.

Greg W introduced Anne-Louise whose topic was Assisted Care System. Anne-Louise had a musical background and has spent recent years as Director & Business Development Manager Woof SMS; in December 2017 she also became Co – Founder/Director & Business Development Manager of Membo Noticeboard.

She began her talk on dementia by describing it as not a normal part of aging. Over 100 diseases cause dementia of which Alzheimers is the most common, accounting for over 50% of cases.  She outlined the other forms of the disease for which there is no cure.  Dementia is the leading cause of death in Australia.  Approximately 450,000 people in the country have dementia and 250 more cases per day are being added. The numbers affected are estimated to exceed one million by 2058.

She then described her personal experience with her 92 year old mother who suffers from complete memory loss but is living independently. Because her mother was anxious not to miss appointments etc, she was phoning her daughter on multiple occasions per day to find an answer to a question.  The reply was immediately forgotten and another similar phone call would be made.  This was extremely taxing and frustrating for our speaker.

Fortunately her husband is a software engineer.  Jointly they have designed and marketed an app for tablets that allows them to provide a daily diary for her mother of those things that she needs to do.  She has confidence in this and it has dramatically improved her quality of life.

The couple have set up a Membo Noticeboard to market this app more widely - see membonoticeboard.com for more details including a video of our speaker.

Keith R gave the vote of thanks for shedding such a clear and personal light on what had been for him, and possibly others present, a dark and not fully comprehended space.

MINUTES OF LAST MEETING
President Alan opened the meeting and welcomed guest speaker Dr Russ Stephenson. A few announcements followed with pleas for arms & legs to be made available to undertake parking duties, show stall hamburgering & bucket waving. Dates to remember are:
15 May Community Awards
19 May District Assembly
22 May Annual USC/Rotary meeting
26 June Changeover Dinner at the Orangery

The members decided not to proceed with an application for YEP from a Conondale student due to hosting problems.

Jeff C told us of hosting a German Rotarian Dieter Schneider, who after suffering the sad loss of his son through suicide, decided to ride his motorbike throughout the world delivering talks on mental health and the devastating effect it can have. Jeff saddled up his trusty motorised steed and, with Dieter following, did a tour of the district following which he then delivered Dieter to Andy & Mia where animated discussions took place in German.

Our sergeant told the usual humorous fibs to extract much needed funds from unsuspecting victims.

Our enthusiastic guest speaker Rotarian (Nambour Club) Dr Russ Stephenson, who has been a previous speaker, told us of the efforts to control malaria being made in PNG. A major campaign, not dissimilar to the Polio Plus exercise, is being undertaken to hopefully eliminate malaria from PNG. The original exercise under RAMS to provide chemically treated mosquito nets was, and still is, proving of great value but additional effort was needed. A vaccine targeting the parasite was developed in Australia (Griffith Uni) and has resulted, along with a major campaign to remove mosquito breeding sites etc, in a reduction of 65% of cases in PNG. This same exercise in the Solomons resulted in an 87% reduction and in Timor Leste 99%.

Russ also gave us a brief update on his other PNG program to improve the nutrition of locals in the Highlands area of PNG.

Russ was thanked by Lionel and presented with a donation of $1000 towards his very worthwhile projects.

AND NOW FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT
A GRANDCHILD'S LAMENT

The computer swallowed grandpa.
Yes, honestly its true!
He pressed  'control and 'enter'
And  disappeared from view.

It devoured him completely,
The thought just makes me squirm.
He must have caught a virus
Or been eaten by  a worm.

I've searched  through the recycle bin
And files of every kind;
I've even  used the Internet,
But nothing  did I find.

In  desperation, I asked Jeeves
My searches to  refine.
The reply from  him was negative,
Not a thing was found  'online.'

So, if inside your 'Inbox,'
My Grandpa you should see,
Please 'Copy,  Scan' and 'Paste' him
And send him back to me.

This is a  tribute to all those Grandmas and Grandpas who have been fearless and learned to use the Computer.

We do not stop  playing because we grow old; we  grow old because we stop playing .
