PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Firstly, at this month's Board Meeting, it was decided to say Yes to the Regionalisation Pilot Project. If you remember Michael Gregory spoke about this to us at a recent dinner meeting and Bernice and I have been sending out emails about this and the opportunity to watch webinars etc to find out more information. We didn’t get any objections so it was an easy vote for yes.
This is not going to affect our club or any club as it is only a pilot. There are still a lot of decisions about how and what to do - so, for us, it’s business as usual.

At this week's meeting, we have an interesting guest speaker John Christensen to talk about the Australian Constitution. John is touring the country giving talks about the fascinating history of our Constitution.  While slowly exploring our great land, John, supported by his wife Marg, is sharing his extensive knowledge about the Constitution with the hope that Australia will embrace his idea that the Constitution should be 'relocated' from the English Statute Books to their Australian equivalent.

With the donning of various hats, prompts and an occasional song, John apparently becomes very animated as he leads his audience through the historical drivers and political processes that culminated in the proclamation of the Constitution Act on 1 January 1901.

There may be interested people outside of our Club who may like to come along. Please extend an invitation to anyone who would like to attend and make sure you advise Bernice of any guests you manage to bring along.

Also, I’d like to let you know that a visit has been arranged to the Moreton Bay campus (in Petrie) of the University of Sunshine Coast. This campus has far exceeded the University’s expectations of growth and they are already constructing Stage 2 and designing Stage 3. The visit is planned for Thursday 29th September and there have been a couple of emails about this already. We have to give final numbers to the USC by next Tuesday 20th. We have five signed up so far; we plan to take the train from Landsborough directly to Petrie station as that is beside the university campus. Morning tea, I believe, will be provided.  If you want to join our small group, please let Sherryl Gregory know asap.

Finally I give notice that next year will be the Centenary of Rotary in Queensland.  Please make an early entry in your diary that this will be celebrated at our District Conference from 24-26 March 2023 at Brisbane City Hall.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 7TH SEPTEMBER
President Paulette opened this meeting by welcoming Members and our Guest Speaker Ian Davies.  She reported that Alan Wilson had been moved to a Brisbane hospital following his recent problems. All members wished him well.
The progress on various projects was discussed:
Maleny Rotary Golf Day - Roly gave an update on this event to be held on 28 October.  Sponsors are being found and advertising continues. The pace will pick up as the actual date approaches.
RC of Maleny Calendar - Lionel T informed us that the Kiosk had been booked for sales on 10 September and collected some volunteers.
Woolworths Sausage Sizzle - Jim A advised that we are no longer able to use the Woolworth BBQ and gas bottle. A new gas bottle, a light portable 2 burner BBQ and a foldable table, which can be stored at Chris B’s shed, have been purchased. The new price will be $3 per sausage in a blanket.
Pride of Workmanship - President Paulette reflected on the success of the evening and congratulated Jared on his work as MC and for arranging the background video footage.

Roly N then stood in for the Sergeant and showed surprisingly little mercy to his captive audience.

Our Guest Speaker was Ian Davies.  He was born and raised in Wales where he trained as a carpenter.  He migrated to Canada to work in the building trade. Whilst in Western Canada he became aware of the natural production in the depths of a local lake of a form of algae. He found that this had beneficial medicinal effects and went on to become the founder of Stem Cell Solutions which produces and markets a range of health products.

Keith gave the vote of thanks.

The meeting closed at 8:35pm.

AND NOW FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT
AN AMERICAN TALE WHICH CANNOT BE TRANSLOCATED TO OZ

A sixteen year-old boy came home with a brand new Ford F150. His parents look at the truck and ask, “Where did you get that truck?!”
“I bought it today,” he says
“With what money?” says his mother. They knew what a new F150 cost.
“Well,” he says, “this one cost me just fifteen dollars.”
The father looks at him like he’s crazy.
“Who would sell a truck like that for fifteen dollars?” he says.
“It was the lady up the street,” says the boy. “I don’t know her name – they just moved in. She saw me ride past on my bike and asked me if I wanted to buy her F150 for fifteen dollars.
“Oh my goodness!” says the mother. “Maybe she’s mentally ill or has Alzheimer’s or something. John, you better go see what’s going on.”
So the boy’s father walks up the street to the house where the lady lives and finds her out in the yard calmly planting petunias.
He introduces himself as the father of the boy to whom she had sold a new Ford F150 truck for fifteen dollars and asks to know why she did it.
“Well,” she says, “two days ago my husband left on a business trip. Yesterday I got a phone call from his boss and found out that he had really run off to Hawaii with his secretary and doesn’t intend to come back.”
“Oh, my goodness, I’m so sorry,” the father says. “But what does that have to do with my son and your truck?”
“Well, this morning he called and told me he was stranded because he got robbed of his wallet with all his credit cards and cash. He told me to sell his new F150 and send him the money.

 So I did."

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
It’s been a big couple of weeks with every Wednesday night involving Rotary. Last week, we had the annual RUSCCF (Rotary & USC Community Fund) dinner which had been delayed from May due to, of course, the weather!! Maleny Rotary Club ran the bar as usual, albeit minus Chris Brooker at the helm: however we did a good job and satisfied some thirsty people. A big thanks to Rick V and Jeff C for picking everything up from the RSL and taking it all back again at the end of the night. Rick, Jeff and myself ran the bar and Alan helped out when he arrived and let me tell you it was pretty hectic there for a while. The night had the usual three scholarships of $4,500 each handed out  and this year there was an extra one of $5,500 in honour of the 100th Anniversary of Rotary in Australia. Some amazing theses being written and research is going on that could benefit many in years to come.

The guest speaker for the evening was fascinating, even though she was on video and not in person. Professor Kathy Townsend is based up at the university’s Hervey Bay campus where she’s doing research on sea turtles. An illuminating talk and a sad one as she spoke about the amount of plastic in the ocean caused by us here in Australia; this is decimating the population of all types of sea turtles. The ongoing floods are also creating problems as the mud from them is acting like a cover over the seagrass and, as a result, there’s only 1% of it available for the turtles to eat. So that will cause starvation. The professor is trying to fund a recovery and research centre in the area as currently all sick turtles have to be transported to either Gladstone or down here to the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital for treatment. The Wildlife Hospital has had numbers increase from an average of around 20 turtles a year to 80 in 2021 and at May 2022 numbers were at 40.

On Wednesday night this week  the Pride of Workmanship Awards Dinner was held at the RSL - and what a night it was!! We had a total of 16 recipients this year with 13 being present to receive their awards with their businesses, organizations and families present. Amongst the numerous employees, we had a few volunteers and a business owner also represented. It’s great to see this acknowledgment of people regardless if they are paid or unpaid.  I’m not too sure of the final numbers present, however it was around 75, and the RSL hall was filled with a bright, happy and almost festive atmosphere. Jared Ashcroft did a fantastic job as MC, especially considering this was his first time in such a role. Not only did he fill the MC role, he also put together the PowerPoint presentation and arranged with Melissa from a local floral business to decorate the tables with cyclamen in pots which were available for purchase at the end of the night and there was a beautiful display she’d made up of flowers from Jared’s own garden.

We had our own two photographers on the night, Neil A with his professional camera gear and Renee H using her iPhone camera. Unfortunately, the memory card Neil used ended up being corrupted so there are no photos from him however with Renee’s 400+ photos, we certainly have some great memories of the night.

The food and service by the RSL was excellent so we are appreciative of their contribution to our fabulous night. Of course, I have to express my gratitude to Greg W and Alan W who once again joined myself walking around the town approaching as many local businesses and organizations talking to everyone about the Pride of Workmanship awards and how to nominate people. And to Craig S for his behind the scenes role fielding emails and phone calls with the various nominators and nominees. It takes a while to go around and speak with as many as we can however it’s definitely worth it. We have to be the only organization in town that takes the time to do so. In the process, we find out about who has sold and who is new - this is definitely beneficial and appreciated by many.

Lastly, as we’ve mentioned now for a while, we as a club have one vote on 15 September as to whether we want the Regionalisation Pilot Project to go ahead or not. If you weren’t at the last dinner meeting when Michael G gave us an excellent understanding and background on it, there is information available at www.creatingtomorrowrotary.org for you to review. As well, you can check out this latest video: https://vimeo.com/737422555. There are also another 2 dates to see the webinar if you missed the previous ones. These are at 3.00pm on Thursday 8 September and 5.00pm on Monday 12 September. You have to register prior to them - contact me for the links and I’ll forward them to you.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 17TH AUGUST
President Paulette opened this Business Meeting with the usual formalities. Members were encouraged to make contact with Jocelyn B and Marlene H to arrange visits with Chris B and Bill H; its great to hear that Roly and Kerry N are recovering from their bout of Covid 19.
There were updates on several projects:
Maleny Rotary Golf Day - Jim A confirmed that the event has been rescheduled to 28 October. Planning is well advanced with advertising having commenced in the Rotary GIST, and local advertising to start shortly.
The RC of Maleny Calendar - Lionel T informed us that, with assistance from Neil A, arrangements had been made to  advertise the calendar on the electronic bill board outside Maleny IGA.
Woolworths Sausage Sizzle - Jim A advised that we are no longer able to use Woolworth's BBQ and gas bottle. Decision made to purchase a new gas bottle, a light portable 2 burner BBQ and a foldable table which can be stored at Chris B’s shed. The new price will be $3 per sausage in a blanket.
2023 Maleny Blues Festival - Paulette S advised that initial concept planning is underway for a new event about mid June in Maleny to be held over 1 or 2 days/ weekend at a couple of different venues such as Maleny Lane, Maleny Community Centre, Maleny Hotel, Maleny RSL, Tesch Park and Cooke Park
Pride of Workmanship - Greg W advised that the POW event is scheduled for 31 August with 16 nominees. Jared Ashcroft will be the MC and all members are encouraged to attend.
Regionalisation of Rotary - Michael G gave a well researched appraisal of the proposed Rotary International pilot project to explore opportunities to develop, test and evaluate a regional approach to supporting and governing Rotary and Rotoract in Zone 8 (Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific Islands). There was a wealth of detail and members are asked to seek any clarification they require from Michael.

The meeting closed at 8:35pm.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 3RD AUGUST
President Paulette opened this meeting by welcoming members.  She spoke about the Maleny Rotary Club Golf Day which has been rescheduled to 28 October and mentioned the advertisement for this in the latest edition of the D9620 Gist.  She also thanked Craig for arranging with Telstra to provide some golf balls and other gifts for the participants.

She mentioned other upcoming events:

 - 14 Aug Drag Queen Bingo being organised by member Jared A.

- 24 Aug The R&USC Scholarship  Dinner meeting was discussed. The Club has the responsibility of running the bar once again. As Chris will not be available, other names were submitted and accepted.

- 31 Aug Pride of Workmanship Dinner at the RSL.  Paulette, Greg W and Alan W spoke about Pride of Workmanship and how Rotary is perceived as promoting a positive message to local businesses. They also highlighted the number of new businesses and the number of changes of ownership.  Jared A will be MC at the Awards Night.

Lionel spoke about the public hanging of calendar photos which has previously taken place in Maple 3. Unfortunately this can no longer take place there due to renovations. Many and varied alternate suggestions were received from the floor.

Fran gave a glowing report on RYDA that she and Renee attended. Noted that Renee was absent this evening due to a dental procedure (and sore hands from striking Zac for him not responding appropriately to her distress).

Jim spoke on the Outridge’s send off. There were 80 to 90 attendees on a mongrel night at RSL. Kerry N and cohorts were to be complimented on the excellence of the "nibbles".  RSL bar staff, pricing and quality of product exemplary (possibly biased report? - Ed).

Jim A then mentioned that the majority of members had paid their dues with some doubling and, in one instance, trebling their payments.

Jim again . . the price of sausages at Sausage Sizzle now raised to $3.00, which is still cheaper than some other organisations.

The Sergeant's session was brilliant, as usual, although some prompting of appreciation was required for some of the more obscure fines.

In the absence of the Guest Speaker, Mike (Mr Smooth) Gregory spoke on his and Sherryl’s dramatic trip to the Top End with special reference to crocodiles, contracting Covid and a subsequent evacuation flight to the Darwin quarantine facility,  and being allowed to return to complete their itinerary.  Apart from the scenery, the highlights were meeting with indigenous locals and learning the history of area.  The advertised bonanza of catching boat loads of barramundi was not forthcoming but Sherryl managed to hook the only fish landed their trip,

Mike and Sherryl both thoroughly recommend the tour.

The meeting closed at 8.20p.m.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
I seem to get an endless amount of emails about different events and causes which I generally pass on to Bernice to forward on to you all. I understand you’re probably too busy to look at all the emails we tend to receive these days. However, a few of these are really interesting or worthwhile so I thought I’d mention a few to you here. You may be interested in attending or donating to them.

The first one is August 2022 Dignity Drive in Maleny. The Dignity Drive is an initiative of charity group Share the Dignity. Share the Dignity believes access to period products is a right, not a privilege. 1 in 5 Australians have been unable to afford period products at some point in their life. All products donated need to be  in original packaging, including pads, tampons, maternity pads, period undies, menstrual cups and incontinence products are accepted. The campaign will be kicking off from 3 August and finish 30 August  2022. Maleny Woolworths and both Star Discount Chemists (Maple St and Riverside Centre) are the donation points.

Next is the End Polio Now walk. The walk is on Sunday 14th August at La Balsa Park at Harbour Parade, Buddina  from 8am to 11am. It’s only a 2km walk and there’s some lovely scenery. Find details below to register.

Thirdly, ITHACA - CALOUNDRA CITY LIFE SAVING CLUB Patrols : Bulcock Beach, Caloundra are running our popular Grey Medallion course again and have places left for 27 & 28 August. This is a specially adapted 2-day course for seniors covering how to deal with an emergency, CPR, defibrillator, first aid, marine stings, water safety, water wise skills, dry rescue, familiarising grandkids with water etc. Cost $5. People can enrol on line at www.caloundracity.org.au or call for further information 0402 45 46 44 - Patricia Barry (Facilitator and Hon Secretary) secretary@caloundracity.org.au.

Lastly, we’ve been hearing quite a lot about the Regionalisation Pilot Project lately which we have to vote on in a couple of months. There was an email sent around with times and dates where you can listen and find out more about it. A couple of sessions have already been on and there’s another four to go. So, if you want to be well informed about this Regionalisation Pilot Project, then I suggest you catch one of the sessions left to join in - Sunday 31 July @ 3.00pm, Thursday 4 August @7.00pm, Tuesday 9 August @12.00pm and Friday 12 August @7.00am; hopefully a time there for all of us. I understand they will be recorded as well so you can listen later. You have to register using the following link to select which session you want to attend - https://www.dropbox.com/s/rnjf3h6id5611r3/town%20hall%20invite%20with%20links.pdf?dl=0.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 6TH JULY
President Paulette opened the meeting by welcoming those members who were present and in good health and wishing that those who were unwell had a speedy recovery.  This was a Business Meeting with no Guest Speaker.

Roly N delivered an update on the farewell which the Club was sponsoring for Rob and Sam Outridge  at the RSL on 21st July.  It was expected to be a wet, cool night which may affect numbers, but 130 people had booked.  The new owners will be attending.

Rick V will run the small programme of formalities that has been arranged. Chris will deliver the Ode before Rob and Sam will be presented with Paul Harris Fellowships for their service in the town.  They really have done amazing things and helped many people over the years. They will be missed.

Post our meeting, some photographs from the event are attached.

Winton Johnson will present them with the keys to the town.

Lisa Plunkett read her commemorative poem which is reproduced below.

Roly and his helpers should be congratulated on the excellent organisation, not forgetting the food.

RYDA was due on  21st July with Fran and Renée attending. It has since been reported to have been a wonderful day.  It went off without a hitch and provided the students with life saving lessons - many thanks to our representatives.

Arrangements are proceeding for the Pride of Workmanship Awards dinner to be held on 31 August at the Maleny RSL.

Regionalisation webinar - Register for the session convenient for you.

The Treasurer announced that the six monthly dues had not changed and he looked forward to receiving members' payments.

In the absence of the Sergeant, there was a dob in session - a pleasing aspect was that many members opted for self flagellation!

For many years storage facilities for the Club have been provided by a container in John and Bernice's garden. An alternative solution is needed - and long overdue. Rick and Lionel started the planning process for new storage facility and members contributed suggestions on a white board.

Brian A announced that Probus had Mike Keane as a guest speaker at the CWA Hall on 27 July about the disappearance of flight MH17.  Mike was a former  RAF fighter bomber pilot, a commercial airline executive and member of our Club. Members would be welcome.

The meeting closed at 8.10p.m

AND NOW FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT
LISA PLUNKETT'S POEM

To Sam and Rob

With admiration, gratitude and much affection.

              Dear Sam and Rob,

You've really made us quite a town

Throughout the coast we are renowned

              Our IGA is envied, famed

              You've really done us proud.

I bring with me a cavalcade

              An avenue of accolades

How can we bear to say goodbye

              We've really got it made.

You've helped to put us on the map

              Folk travel far and wide

They've heard about the Gourmet Fare

              And prowl the aisles inside.

              For Noosa ham so succulent

              Asparagus in brine

              For Maggie Beer's Duck Pate

              These three I find sublime.

(and I buy them all the time

                         they've even got Beef Jerky

which makes us all feel … perky?)

There's brands to make you chortle

From near and far they're sourced

Like “Drunken Sailor – Ugly Duck”

              And Pomodoro's sauce (of course).

But while I've eulogised these treats

              I should have mentioned first,

              Community Chest and your bequests

The Groups that you have nursed.

The Food Hampers for those in need

              The Schools, the Clubs galore

              A million – nearly two I've heard

              You've given them and more.

The time ten years ago or so

When we all were minus power

You gave us ice and help and hope

              It was your finest hour.

And then there are your wondrous Staff

              I cannot name them all

But Janelle – no longer with us

              I clearly can recall.

There's Fiona who can put a name

              To everybody's face

              And tiny, cheerful Trisha Lyon

Who serves with style and grace.

The boy who says “Now can you cope

Would you like a hand with that?”

I love it when he escorts me

‘Cause your trolleys are a trap.

They try to get away from me

I'm not coping with the brakes

              I'm headed for the gully

Where there lives a big green snake

                                  (only teasing).

It's now high time I praised you for

              Your generous trading hours

Fifteen hours – all days but one

You deserve a bunch of flowers.

Or better still – the City Keys

Or a Statue in Tesch Park

But why be cast in stone or bronze

Where the pigeons leave their mark.

              Now Andrew, Winston, Everyone

              I've had a wondrous thought

Find a street that has no name

And we'll call it “Outridge Court”.

              Developers will have a ball

              With little cul-de-sacs

And streets named after loyal staff

              With rustic walking tracks.

Where Owen Gray can lead the way

              We'll have a bivouac

              We'll have a children's Picnic Day

And then we'll hit the sack.

We'll have a Ribbon Cutting Gala

We might just ask the Mayor

And maybe Wills and Kate and George

The Royals could well be there.

              We could have Anastasia

              Or Tony Albanese

A Marching Band with all the Clubs

For whom you've made life easy.

              The Fire Brigade, the Hospital.

Cats and dogs from Sippy Creek,

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 6TH JULY
President Paulette opened her first meeting in that role by welcoming members and Guest Speaker Rachel Aspinall before the usual formalities. She highlighted the following upcoming events:
21 July RYDA - Rotary Driver Education in Caloundra:
This program will again be held at Corbould Park. MSHS students will be attending that day and it will be one of our leading Youth Projects for the year. We are expected to provide volunteers for that day and at least one of the other days of the program.

21 July Farewell to Rob and Sam Outridge at the RSL.

31 August Pride of Workmanship Awards Dinner at the RSL.

Our guest speaker for the evening, Rachel Aspinall, was introduced by Fran Tickle.

Rachael runs her own business, Hinterland Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Inc, located at Mapleton. The organisation supports locals with the rescue and rehabilitation of injured wildlife, aiming to promote a love of native animals and help when an injured animal is found. It provides information on what to do if a dead marsupial is seen and how to rescue any live joeys in pouches. Education is also offered to local schools and groups. Hinterland Wildlife also works closely with other wildlife groups, such as Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital and RSPCA.

Rachael was a teacher in England before locating in Sydney and Hervey Bay and later at the Sunshine Coast Grammar School. She has always been a volunteer, being in the Rural Fire Brigade and SES at Nambour which gave her entry into the rescue and rehabilitation of wildlife. She has a private licence to care for koalas gained after 2 years’ experience through Australia Zoo.

Referrals for the rescue of koalas and other wildlife have generally come because of articles in the Hinterland Times and Facebook or from Australia Zoo and the RSPCA and other wildlife groups. Most of the calls tend to be out of hours when other organisations are closed!

There are many healthy colonies of koalas around the hinterland and several calls are received from people trying to work out if the koala is sick and needs attention. Rachel’s advice is that if a koala is sitting at the base of a tree or on the road and it does not move when approached, the animal needs attention.

Sometimes a sick animal is spotted and then is found up a tree. She has spent many hours at the base of a tree waiting for the koala to come down. She has recently been gifted a trap which can be set and has saved a lot of waiting hours. USC also have a dog trained in tracking koalas once a sighting has been reported.

Chlamydia is the most common infectious disease for koalas and, if not treated, the animal will deteriorate and die. Sick koalas must be treated by a licensed person and only healthy orphaned koalas are raised by carers. The orphans really bond with a carer, so it is important it stays with the same carer for the best chance of survival. Recovered koalas must be released in the same locality where they were rescued, after being checked by Australia Zoo to ensure they are fit for release.

Maintaining a food source for koalas under care is always a problem. Over 500 bushy trees are needed for one carer. Different leaves from many trees are needed at various times and Rachael spends about two hours a day sourcing leaves. She runs two enclosures as well as a secure perimeter on her property and cares not only for koalas but many other injured and recovering wildlife species.

Roly N gave the vote of thanks and the meeting closed at 8.30pm.
