PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Our special thanks to the Interactors plus their mentors Fran and Deb for treating us to a meeting at the High School. The meal was superb as was our after dinner speaker Brian who gave us an overview of some of the challenges for education reform. Our thanks also to Brian A for the range of goodies in the brown paper bag.

On your behalf I took the opportunity of thanking the Interactors also for their fantastic contribution to the Maleny Show roster. At the busiest times on the Friday when we were all at full capacity, they performed any task asked of them and helped us through that period. We probably could not have done it so well without them - and I said so.

I hope you have had a chance to look at the bulletin and the blog on our newly created website. I have had a few calls politely suggesting we still need the bulletin and hopefully the blog is not the only way of the future and dispensing with the weekly bulletin would be a backward step. It is very early days and we were just using some of the current technology to show how we could communicate to the members and to the public. It was never the intention to do away with bulletin. Perhaps in the future (way in the future) it may be fortnightly with weekly input on the blog. This is not for me to decide but for you, as members to let the board know how you feel. It will be then up to board (through the members) to let their wishes be known and decisions made. Thanks for the calls – this is how we should be working together.

I need some photos of the Christmas party at the Hankinsons and some of the recent trip to Moreton Island. We all enjoyed ourselves so much I can’t find any records of the event. Any assistance please?

This week we have public recognition of those volunteers who get the job done without fanfare and spotlights - the Pride of Workmanship awards. I look forward to you joining in their recognition at Tranquil Park.

LAST WEEK’S MEETING

Last week’s meeting was held at Maleny State High School. The Year 12 Hospitality Class cooked the meal and the INTERACT Club attended to Front of House. President Rick thanked the students for their efforts for catering and he also thanked the INTERACT Club for the help they gave at the Maleny Show.

President Rick thanked all Rotary members and their partners for their significant contribution to a very successful Maleny Show. He gave Sherry and Greg particular thanks for their outstanding contributions. Sherry in turn, gave thanks to Bernice for going beyond the call of
duty at the show. Anticipated profit is around $8000. Well done to all those involved.

There is combined Board Meeting at Linda’s place at 7pm this Monday, 13 June. Directors’ reports should be sent to Karen by Friday 10 June for distribution.

There will be a Rotary working bee at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve on Saturday, 18 June. Five or six people are needed from 8:30am - 12noon. Bring your own morning tea as the work will be at the western end of the reserve. A BBQ lunch will be provided. Contact President Rick if you are able to be a part of this working bee. The Apex Club has organised Paws of Thunder at the Showgrounds this Sunday, 12 June.

There is a Trivia Night at the RSL on 2 July. We are trying to get a table of eight from our Rotary Club to prove that we are the smartest club in town. Contact President Rick if you are feeling particularly intelligent. The questions will be half sport and half general knowledge.

Our gas bottles for the BBQ from now will be stored under the Community Centre. Mitre 10 will be used for refills and not the Farm Barn. The plastic safety bungs must be replaced back in the bottle for storage. There are plenty of these bungs in the esky.

Mike will organise a bus for the Change Over meeting at Flaxton Gardens.

Brian King spoke about the Australian Curriculum, the current state of education in OECD countries and club members sat a small NAPLAN test with various levels of success.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Well what a weekend!!. To those who can barely lift their arms or move their feet to reach for and read the bulletin, I wish to personally thank each and everyone who helped out at the Maleny Show. I watched as everyone, just everyone,
pitched and did more than was required – from those manning the front
gate, giving a welcoming Rotary smile to the thousands of visitors, to the BBQ
“chefs” dodging hot oil and colourful suggestions from all directions , to those
trying to translate the customers orders over the incessant show commentary and music, and of course the food assemblers, peelers, slicers and cleaners, as well as the those on Sunday morning refurbishing the stall and items. – all of you who made this massive effort a stand out success. I must also make special mention of the Interactors who were prepared to do any job and continuously showed diligence, calmness and grace under pressure and wasn’t there some
pressure at times? This next generation of leaders are something we can be
proud to be associated with.

The proof is in the pudding as they say. We has a gross income of about $16
000, so after settling the pizza partnership, and removing floats plus all the groceries, we should do better than $8,000, more or less.

Our Treasurer will give you a better figure soon, possibly after the Board Meeting next week. Whatever the figure, your efforts have been justified, as well as
the camaraderie and teamwork that went into every product sold. It was also a
lot of fun. The other good news is that despite our best efforts to empty the supermarket shelves of all their soft drinks, eggs, bacon and meat, we eventually sold out at about 7. 12 pm. Regular menu items were abandoned about 6.30 with creative combinations of leftovers being sold to those still hungry enough (salad roll with onion and mustard?). The result –very little wastage, which means all the more to the bottom line.

Last week’s meeting we were beaten by technology in viewing the website so
please follow Ric’s directions and check out your new website. We will need
your best photos and words to bring it to life.

To those who attended the District Assembly at Caboolture, I know there is always something to learn or someone new and interesting to meet. I hope you did both.

Don’t forget to let Geoff C know if you are coming with partners to the Pride of Workmanship awards and or the Changeover Dinner. We need the numbers and
dietary requirements for catering purposes.

This week we will be treated to the Interactors as out hosts and guides around
the high schools, plus an insight into some educational challenges by our guest
speaker – our very own Brian K. See you at the High School at 6.30 for 7 pm.

LAST WEEK’S MEETING

Our nominated guest speaker was unable to attend due to Maleny Show commitments so our very own member Ric Townsend offered to give a demonstration of the revamped Maleny Rotary Club web site. Unfortunately after many attempts to rectify the technical issue this was not able to be presented in the form that it was planned. However Ric did a good job in explaining the site with the aid of his laptop screen as to how the project was progressing to date. Ric is calling for any information and photographs of any projects that Rotary have undertaken in the past that members have for him to enter into the site to make it interesting reading . Ric explained that blogging was the preferred easier method of entering information and more accessible for members to peruse, however there were not many “bloggers” present on the night. Members from each avenue of service could enter their reports into the blog along with the weeklybulletin and other relative Rotary information which will be accessible by all members. Suggestions were put forward that people may be interested in advertising their business on the site and therefore bring some revenue for the club. The need for someone to volunteer the job of marketing the possibility of advertising within the business community is there for the taking. The club appreciates the time that Ric is putting into this project as it is very time consuming and often very frustrating.
