MINUTES OF MEETING OF 7TH MARCH
President Alan opened the meeting by welcoming members and guests.

Our Guest Speaker was Rotarian Greg Beard whose topic was The Mater Hospital and The Sisters of Mercy. Mater in the Community is an initiative of Mater Foundation – the philanthropic arm of Mater. Developed to raise awareness within the local community, speakers convey the story of Mater and its contribution to Queensland’s community since 1861. Greg's presentation explored the history of Mater through to the latest developments in the hospital's health, education and research.

Greg has been interested in 'people development' and the way in which resulting changes affect organisations since, at the age of 18, he became a member of  RYLA. Whilst working at The National Australia Bank, he was encouraged to enrol in the JCI(Junior Chamber of Commerce) from whence he became President of the international division and was assigned to visit Canada, The USA and Latin America.

Greg is now Manager of Mater in the Community. Mater is a not-for-profit healthcare organisation which has been providing exceptional care to the Queensland community for more than 100 years at its hospitals at South Brisbane and Redland and now Springfield. Mater comprises seven hospitals, Health Centres (Brookwater, Hope Island and Redlands), the world-class Mater Research, as well as Mater Pathology and Mater Pharmacy, all with one aim—to provide exceptional care – meeting the healthcare needs of the community.

The story of Mater starts with a vision that remains as current today as it was in 1861 when the first group of Sisters of Mercy arrived in Brisbane to develop a school and then set up a 20 bed private hospital in North Quay. This was the start of a tradition of providing compassionate care for the sick and the needy – which eventually led to the establishment of seven hospitals treating over 500,000 patients each year.

In the early years the sisters would overcome all obstacles, be they political, prejudicial or bureaucratic with great patience, firmness and charm. This was particularly so with sisters Angela Mary and Mary Dorothea with the former achieving legendary status for her achievements, discipline and control.

Greg projected a photo-view of Mater in 1946 which showed how large it had become including a substantial childrens hospital and the sister's quarters. An interesting aside is that The Sisters of Mercy in Brisbane were autonomous and were no way under the control or influence of their order in Dublin.

Since then Mater has continued to expand but was not funded by the government until the 1980s and relied solely on non-government and community support.

Once the large childrens hospital was absorbed into Brisbane's new Lady Cilento hospital, Mater has been able to develop its research facilities so effectively that there is an enviable blend of research leading to immediate post natal care thus going from zero to neonatal post operative care for over ten thousand babies a year with more than 2000 premature and seriously ill babies in the Neonatal Care Unit(NCU).

Areas of clinical care and research also include autism and adolescent mental health at The Mater Young Adults Health Centre in Brisbane. The Neurosciences Centre of Excellence, supported by the Mater Foundation Mission Fund includes  Stroke and Epilepsy units. Other health areas given serious attention include bowel disease, breast, ovarian and prostate cancer, still birth, diabetes and leukaemia. Mater has an excellent education facility for training nurses. The Mater Mission is concerned with homelessness and refugee health.

Mater's vision is to be a national leader in Health, Education and Research.

Greg has worked exclusively in the not-for-profit sector for almost twenty years, with over ten of them at Mater Foundation. He has experience in all areas of fundraising and philanthropy. I am confident that our audience would agree that he is an informed and passionate speaker.

Chris R-S gave the vote of thanks.

CONGRATULATIONS MALENY HIGH SCHOOL INTERACT CLUB
On Sunday 11th March, seven of our Interact students, Mikki Doonan, Rosie Skull, Sarah Hindle, Luca Curiale, Max Doonan, Sam Hamilton-Barry and Nathaniel Audley, set out with Ms Kerry Hindle, John and Bernice McLennan from Maleny Rotary, and Ms Fran Tickle, to attend the Annual Interact Conference at St.Columban’s College, Caboolture.  We attended our first Conference in 2006, and have attended every Conference since then.

The Conference brings together Interact Clubs (High school students) and Earlyact Clubs (Primary school students) from throughout Rotary District 9600.District 9600 encompasses parts of South-East Queensland from the north side of Brisbane as far out as Kingaroy and Murgon.  It also includes Papua NewGuinea, the Solomon Islands and Nauru.

These are wonderful days where young people can get together and share their stories of how they work together within their school, their local community, and on an International level, to make a difference.  When you listen to their stories, and watch their presentations, you cannot help but be inspired.  I am certain that our future is in good hands.  It is also a great opportunity to glean new ideas from other clubs.

It was a fun-filled day, and I would say it was the best Interact Conference I have attended. There were two brilliant guest speakers, and a couple of break-out sessions, where the students did getting to know you activities. It was very well attended, which was great to see, and our students acquitted
themselves beautifully.  The day is sponsored by Rotary, and we must say a huge ‘Thank You’ to our local Rotary Club for their unwaivering support over thelast 12 years.  They have been there every step of the way.

I would like to congratulate the members of the Maleny High School Interact Club on winning the ‘Phillip Blakey’ shield for being the best Interact Club in Rotary District 9600.  I would also like to include in this our Year 12 Interact members from 2017 who contributed so much to our success.  I am so veryproud of each and every one of you.  Well done!

Our sincere thanks to Fran Tickle for this report.
