MINUTES OF MEETING OF 18TH APRIL
President Alan welcomed members and reminded everyone of the District Conference to be held at Maroochydore 20, 21, 22 April.
Greg Williams gave a report on the progress of the aquatic centre to be located on the Precinct and asked for a letter of support to be sent to MDSRC.
Our Sergeant Chris then extracted monies from unsuspecting members.
Greg introduced Kelli Dendle who is an occupational therapist, who has volunteered in schools and is currently working on "Affordable Housing in Maleny", whilst doing a university degree. Kelli said Rotary had commissioned a report into housing issues in Maleny. The housing conversations that followed from this outlined the need for the availability of more lower cost homes to buy or rent thus providing a transitional roof over the head of people who need to move house and time to make other arrangements.
Some of the problems in Maleny are increasing property and rental prices. Some of the studio rentals are being used for Air B&B. As a typical rent is $480 per week; this is not sustainable for a single parent who may be on a single pension of $472 per week, or anyone on the minimum wage of $695 per week.
Those who find themselves in HOUSING STRESS are FAMILIES: LOW INCOME WORKERS: OLDER PEOPLE ESPECIALLY WOMEN (in fact the biggest group is women aged over 50 which can come about by losing a partner, then having to move house for various reasons).
There are some projects happening with Maleny Neighbourhood Centre looking into research on transitional housing and age friendly community housing:
- CHASM housing : Small affordable Housing.
- SMART Living Society Limited: A not for profit public company limited by guarantee. Applying for full charity status and planning to build housing that is appropriate and affordable for rent.
These groups are endeavouring to get an AGE FRIENDLY COMMUNITY HOUSING GRANT for RESEARCH and to progress the shortage of affordable housing in Maleny. With these groups working together she was hopeful of alleviating some of the demand for low cost housing in Maleny.
Some questions followed. Then Malcolm thanked Kelli for her enlightening talk.
THE GREAT DEBATE
Congratulations to the members of our Club who won the debate with the RC of Glasshouse Mountains in Landsborough on 23rd April.

HELPING ONE'S FELLOW MAN
An Arab Sheik was admitted to the hospital for heart surgery but, prior to the surgery, the doctors needed to have some of his blood type stored in case the need arose. As the gentleman had an extremely rare type of blood that couldn't be found locally, the call went out around the world.
Finally a Scotsman was located who had the same rare blood type. After some coaxing, the Scot donated his blood for the Arab. After the surgery the Arab sent the Scotsman a BMW, a diamond necklace for his wife, and US$100,000 in appreciation for the blood donation.
A few months later, the Arab had to undergo a further corrective surgery procedure. Once again, his doctor telephoned the Scotsman who was more than happy to donate his blood. After the second surgery, the Arab sent the Scotsman a thank-you card and a box of Quality Street chocolates.
The Scotsman was shocked that the Arab did not reciprocate his earlier kind gesture as he had anticipated. He phoned the Arab and asked him: "I thought you would be more generous than that. Last time you sent me a BMW, diamonds and money, but this time you only sent me a lousy thank-you card and a crappy box of chocolates?"
To this the Arab replied: " Aye laddie, but I now have Scottish blood in me veins".
