MINUTES OF MEETING OF 19TH JUNE
This was held as usual at Maleny Hotel and marked the end of President Alan’s two years as Club President. A huge thank you to President Alan for his fine leadership over this period.

Malcolm B reported on the very successful working bee on 17 June to replace park benches at Mary Cairncross Park and sought further assistance to continue this very worthwhile community project on 24 June.

Phillip S provided an update on our membership advertising program.

Sergeant Chris B was quick to use his habitual license and liberties to raise some additional revenue from members in the best of spirits.

Rick T introduced our guest speaker Sarah Williams, who is a best selling author, publisher and local mother of four, to speak to us about her business.

Sarah was born and raised on an organic kiwifruit orchard in Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand and spent her spare time thinking up stories and acting them out with her dolls. At 17, she applied for a Student Exchange program and lived in North Carolina, USA for a year where she graduated from High School. Bitten by the travel bug, she spent the next few years based in Melbourne but travelled extensively through Australia, USA and Europe. In 2004, she moved to Queensland where she later met and married her husband. They now have four spirited young children, two dog and a cat, and live at Witta.

Sarah knew she wanted to be an author ever since picking up her first romance novel at fourteen years old. To quote her: “Being an author is a lifelong ambition of mine. I have always been an avid reader and enjoy all genres. I am also a history buff and love researching the past and visiting structures and places from the days gone by. I have a particular passion for Native American history and culture which was inspired by my time in North Carolina.”

After starting up her own boutique small press, Serenade Publishing, Sarah has gone on to publish a novel every six months, including her bestselling series “Brigadier Station”. In 2017 Sarah was nominated for Best Debut Author by the ARRA (Australian Romance Readers Association) and AusRom Today.

Greg W gave the vote of thanks to Sarah for her inspirational talk exemplifying a new wave of creative, industrious, yet family focussed people that are now able to run a world-wide vertically integrated business from Maleny.

CHANGEOVER NIGHT
Members welcomed AG Linda Morell, past members and guests to a well organised and enjoyable Changeover Night at the Orangery Restaurant.  After two years as President, Alan Wilson was handing over to Sherryl Gregory.  Melinda Martin was the Master of Ceremonies and the programme ran faultlessly.

After AG Linda had installed Sherryl as our new President, Sherryl thanked Alan for his stewardship and spoke of her hopes for the coming year.  Following this, there was a major surprise as four of our members were honoured as Paul Harris Fellows and each received a sapphire pin; these were John McLennan, Chris Brooker, Rick Vickers and Roly Neiper. Many congratulations to them.

The new Board was then introduced.

Greg, Paulette, Jim, President Sherryl, Michael, Bernice, Ric V, Alan (Phillip & CL absent)

Other photographs of the evening will appear on a separate blog.
