MINUTES OF MEETING OF 16TH APRIL

President Ric chaired the meetimg and welcomed past and present members, their partners and guests as well as our Guest Speaker Rachael Stacey.

Rachael spoke of her amazing adventure through India with her camel, mostly unaccompanied by any other person.

Rachael, who comes from Orange, began studying Physiotherapy at UNSW.  During her time there she decided to become an adventurer instead, and therefore gave up her studies to pursue her dream.

She first travelled to Alice Springs where she met a camel driver who invited her to join him on a 200 km trek south of Alice Springs, taking around six weeks to complete the journey. Having learned  skills, such as harnessing and saddling a camel during this trip, inspired  her to continue her journey to a Camel Festival in Rajasthan India. Leaving Australia in 1982,  Rachael  sailed on an ex-refugee boat from Darwin to Indonesia, then  transferring  to another boat in Singapore for the rest of her journey to India.

Having learned much about the differences in camel herds, overcoming language barriers and meeting many wonderful hospitable people, she ventured off alone on her trek.  She started  with two camels but ended up with just one camel named “Dorothy”. Both camels were stolen from her along the way and only Dorothy was found later and returned to her, which  allowed her to  continue her trek. Rachael  became very ill with hepatitis and spent six weeks recovering from that illness.

After two years of following her dream, Rachael returned to Australia to take care of her aging grandparents.  Rachael is currently secretary of the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre and lives at Reesville.  She was thanked by Bernice.

NOW FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT

AGING DISGRACEFULLY?

Russ and Fred, two friends, met in the park every day to feed the pigeons, watch the squirrels and discuss world problems.

One day Russ didn't show up.  Fred didn't think much about it and figured maybe he had a cold or something..

But after Russ hadn't shown up for a week or so, Fred really got worried.

However, since the only time they ever got together was at the park, Fred didn't know where Russ lived, so he was unable to find out what had happened to him.

A month had passed, and Fred figured he had seen the last of Russ, but one day, Fred approached the park and-- lo and behold!--there sat Russ!
Fred was very excited and happy to see him and told him so.

Then he said, 'For crying out loud Russ, what in the world happened to you?'

Russ replied, 'I have been in jail.'

'Jail!' cried Fred. What in the world for?'

'Well,' Russ said, 'you know Sue, that cute little blonde waitress at the coffee shop where I sometimes go?'

'Yeah,' said Fred, 'I remember her. What about her? '

'Well,  the little gold-digging witch figured I was rich and she filed rape charges against me; and, at 89 years old, I was so proud that when I got into court, I pleaded guilty'.

'The judge gave me 30 days for  perjury.'
