MINUTES OF MEETING OF 2ND APRIL

Lionel T chaired the meeting and welcomed members and our Guest Speaker Marcelle Holdaway.  Reports were received from:

- Rick V said that the Mary Cairncross Park Advisory Panel was scheduled to hold an initial meeting this week.

- Lionel T reported that 2 new advertisers had been found for the calendar.

- Bernice circulated a letter from Lucas Kennedi.

- Rosters for the Show Stall and Gate were circulated.

- Chris B said that the Maleny Interact Club had 15 active members from years 8 to 12.  He also indicated that the roster for parking at the Maleny Cheese anniversary was filled.

- The possibility of parking at the Cross Country event at the Golf Club on 4th May was mooted.

Chris then indulged in some flights of mental acrobatics as Sergeant and John McL won the Heads and Tails.

Our Guest Speaker on Community Development was Marcelle Holdaway who has lived in Maleny for 17 years and  considered herself a local - she was swiftly set straight on that claim.  Her talk was based on her work for the Hume Council in Victoria as an Economic Community Development Officer during 2011/12.  The Hume Council area covers Tullamarine and Broadmeadows in Melbourne's outer suburbs.  It has a rapidly expanding population, having grown at over 30% during the last 19 years.  There are representatives from 140 nations, a number of whom have active community groups.

Marcelle's job was to find a way to interact with the different groups to try to foster the concept of improving sustainable living.  She set up a "Champion's Programme" in which 20 volunteers were trained on a 9 month course during which they identified seven projects to involve the local community.  These projects were promoted to different ethnic groups who took over ownership.  The two most successful were a bakery and a commercial vegetable garden.

This project was written up and it has recently been awarded United Nations recognition.  The vote of thanks was given by Keith R.

NOW FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT

A TRIBUTE TO ONE OF THE GREATEST COMEDIANS OF ALL TIME.

A MAN WHO MADE A DIFFERENCE WITH HIS WIT, CHARITY AND HUMILITY;           WHO TAUGHT THE WORLD TO LAUGH AT ITSELF AND MUST BE DOING THE SAME UP THERE .

Had you forgotten that he had lived to be 100 and also didn't realise it has been 11 years since he died?  He touched a lot of lives during his life. Thought you might enjoy a bit of memory jogging.

                                                     BOB HOPE IN HEAVEN

A tribute to a man who DID make a difference.

ON TURNING 70
'I still chase women, but only Downhill.

ON TURNING 80
'That's the time of your life when even your birthday suit needs pressing.'

ON TURNING 90
'You know you're getting old when the candles cost more than the cake.'

ON TURNING 100
'I don't feel old. In fact, I don't feel anything until noon. Then it's time for my nap.'

ON GIVING UP HIS EARLY CAREER, BOXING
'I ruined my hands in the ring. The referee kept stepping on them.'

ON NEVER WINNING AN OSCAR
'Welcome to the Academy Awards or, as it's called at my home, 'Passover'.

ON GOLF
'Golf is my profession. Show business is just to pay the green fees.'

ON PRESIDENTS
'I have performed for 12 presidents and entertained only six.'

ON WHY HE CHOSE SHOWBIZ FOR HIS CAREER
'When I was born, the doctor said to my mother,  "Congratulations, you have an eight pound ham".

ON RECEIVING THE CONGRESSIONAL GOLD MEDAL
'I feel very humble, but I think I have the strength of character to fight it.'

ON HIS FAMILY'S EARLY POVERTY
'Four of us slept in the one bed. When it got cold, mother threw on another brother.'

ON HIS SIX BROTHERS
'That's how I learned to dance. Waiting for the bathroom.'

ON HIS EARLY FAILURES
'I would not have had anything to eat if it wasn't for the stuff the audience threw at me.'

ON GOING TO HEAVEN
'I've done benefits for ALL religions. I'd hate to blow the hereafter on a technicality.'
