THE RANGE Vol 66 No 5
Our next meeting is the Club Visit by DG Sue Mulraney and her husband, John. The Board will meet with her earlier in the evening to outline what has been happening so far this year and how we are progressing with our plans and programs.
Please bring along your Partners if they are free on the night. Unfortunately, Helen will be out at Roma next week so she won’t have a chance to meet DG Sue and John. It will be best to wear our Dinner Badges, since DG Sue won’t know many of us.
Many of you will have seen the fantastic article featuring Renee Harris in her Purple Shirt with a great article developed by Sherryl Gregory in this weeks GC&M News. The ‘Official’ Launch of our campaign will be Friday 6 September at 12:30pm outside Barbers of Maleny, Riverside Centre. Come along in your purple shirt, or cap, to be part of this important launch of one of the key components of my plans for this year.
On another of our program fronts, Neil Andison is travelling
to Gympie next Tuesday to attend the Mary River Catchment Coordination
Committee AGM. He’ll be seeing if this is the best way for our Club to start
becoming better involved in protecting, nurturing, and strengthening Obi Obi
Creeks environment now and into the future.
Planning for our Golf Day on 25 October is now
all happening under Greg Williams' leadership, and Roly Niepers’ kind eye.
Once again, Lionel Tilley has pulled our Calendar together
with the assistance of Rick Vickers and Bruce Kelly. It is ready to hit the
market at $6. Tell your friends, think about it as part of Christmas gifts for
family and friends…..especially any overseas. As usual, Club members can purchase
them for $5.00.
President Scott opened the meeting by welcoming members and our Guest Speaker Sam Hughes PHF aka The Travelling Jackeroo. He reminded one and all that the next meeting on 4 September will be a Partners Night for the visit of our District Governor Sue Mulraney and her husband.
He noted the following events:
- he and Rick V will be attending the SES retirement function for Pamyla O'Connor at the end of the month,
- Fran T and Paulette S would be attending the Neighbourhood Centre
thank you morning tea on the 30 August.
- Craig S has booked
Yarraman again for 12 July 2025.
- Chris B requested members consider attending the U12 soccer carnival being held on the 8 September at the Maleny Showgrounds to assist with parking.
- Renee H has approached Maleny Mitre 10 and they are onboard with
wearing the purple shirts to support the DV push.
- Rick V has advised that the Community Grants are still open but
will close on 4 September.
Roly N announced that planning for the Golf Day on 25 October is well advanced. Greg W is to take over as Chair of the Golf Day
committee. Funds raised will be distributed to the charities supported by Sam
Hughes and also our Ukraine project. Greg acknowledged his new role.
Fran T and Su C let us know that the Shave for a Cure day went very well and raised approximately $5000. Included in this total was an incredible amount of just over a $1000 raised by Su. She in turn offered her thanks for the $1000 donation made by the Club; extremely well done Su and many thanks for your effort. Fran T also advised that $2000 had been donated to the Education Support Fund; she also noted that she had attended what was a bittersweet presentation night at TS Centaur.
Our Sergeant entertained us as usual, and proved without doubt the quote from Maya Angelou, "There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you". He certainly released a few. Much to our collective despair, Chris has been diligently reading his copy of the Oxford Dictionary and found the verb "cavorting". He went on to use it with great relish, throughout his theatrics. Well done Chris.
As mentioned by Scott at the start of the evening, in our midst was none other than the "Travelling Jackeroo", Sam Hughes. Ric Townsend was asked to welcome Sam and reacquaint us of our association with this incredible young man - a brief history lesson ensued.
An ad hoc presentation by Sam followed. I think we would all agree he has a lifetime of stories, accumulated along the way in his 3 year odyssey, and thank him for sharing some of them with us. The photos below mostly feature his return to Maleny with a welcome in which the Club was a major participant.

President Scott Wassman then gave a vote of thanks and closed the meeting.
