PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Colourful and out there would aptly describe our inaugural Lift the Lid Mental Health Walk last Sunday 10th. It was a success even though the numbers attending were not as good as we would have hoped for. However, we made up for it by our impact on the town and those we encountered as we walked down Maple St, passing the various cafes as we went. When we were crossing over Maple St and the cars were stopped at the crossing for us, I did think to myself that any visitors to town might think we are all bonkers in Maleny.

As we walked around and collected some coins in our buckets, people certainly asked what it was for and were pleased that it was for a great cause such as mental health.

Whit N Whimsy did excellent business with coffees and cakes and thanks to them for putting up with us spreading ourselves out. We received tremendous support from some new local businesses, especially up at the top end of town and everyone was very pleased with the various prizes won in the raffle.

Not everyone dressed up; however those that did were impressive and colourful. Although a number of dogs did join us on the walk, there was little dressing up amongst them.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 6TH SEPTEMBER

President Paulette opened the meeting by welcoming members and introducing our guests from Toastmasters in Beerwah and the Chaplain at the Maleny State School.

Reminders on Upcoming Events

Maleny Rotary Golf Day: Roly provided an update on the Golf Day to be held on Friday 8th. Everything was now in place; great support received from the Maleny business community for the event with sponsorship and prizes, but the number of players is down from the previous year. Thanks to everyone who has volunteered to help on the day.

Australian Rotary Mental Health Walk: Scheduled for Sunday 10th September with prizes for the best dressed on the day. Proceeds will go Australian Rotary Mental Health Research.

Australia Zoo Parking: School holidays start on 16th September and parking is required over the following two weeks. The Club will be notified of our time slots.

Maleny Garden Club Parking: Their Spring Fair will be held on 7th October from 9am-4pm at the Showgrounds. Chris B will be looking for volunteers shortly.

Ulysses Bike Club will be holding a meet in Maleny in about 6 weeks time. We have been asked to cater with a BBQ lunch for about 150 people. Rick V will be looking for help to decide on a menu and plan the meal.

World Peace Day was to be held on 23rd September but has been put back to October.

Youth Program: Fran T advised the Interact Club at the Maleny High School has been extremely active. In August they held a walk to support the Fred Hollows Foundation which raised $1,600. They will be nominating someone to go the Rotary Science Week and the Rotary Transition Workshop from High School to University.

Sergeant at Arms: As is his usual wont, Chris managed to fine everyone in the room but took pity on our guests.

Our Duty Officer for the meeting Bernice McL introduced our guests from Toastmasters Beerwah, Ian, Katrina, and Franny. Ian has been in Toastmasters for 30 years, but Katrina and Franny are new to the club with only one years’ experience.  Ian Pinker joined Toastmasters after being introduced by a neighbour who kept at him on many occasions. He eventually went along to a meeting, enjoyed the experience and has been a member for over 30 years. He was a District Governor in 2014, with a district that covered Queensland, PNG and the South Pacific Islands.

At meetings, members learn and practice skills that can be applied to day-to-day life in work and personal situations, and gain confidence in public speaking and writing skills. He told us that he remains active in Toastmasters because of his enjoyment in mentoring young people starting their careers and the people you meet both in Australia and overseas. Young people can join Toastmasters at 18 years of age.

Toastmasters International is a nonprofit educational organisation that builds confidence and teaches public speaking skills through a worldwide network of clubs that meet online and in person. Founded in 1924, the organization is headquartered in Englewood, Colorado with approximately 270,000 members in more than 14,200 clubs in 148 countries.

Katrina Adrill joined Toastmasters to improve her skills to make presentations and answer impromptu questions in the workplace. She told us that a meeting usually starts with a warm-up where a topic is picked, and members must make an impromptu response of about 45 seconds. There are also tabletop talks where a member talks for 2 minutes on a topic and there are also longer prepared talks. She then asked us to participate in a warm-up by setting the scene of an aircraft making an unscheduled landing in an isolated region; and asked Ian to respond who in turn passed the floor on to Franny; Scott; Greg; Murray; Jim; Chris; and finally, Paulette who is a member of Toastmasters Beerwah.

Roly N gave the vote of thanks.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 16TH AUGUST

President Paulette opened the meeting by welcoming DG Paul Roger on his Official Visit with AG Bernie Wilson, members and Partners Sissel and Helen.  DG Paul had a successful meeting with the Club Board prior to the meeting and was impressed with the Club’s activities and goals. 

The President reminded us of upcoming events;

10 Sep  Walk in support of Australian Rotary Health’s mental health campaign

The Club is also looking for a volunteer to manage our Kiva account now that CL has relinquished this role. 

 Lionel T announced that the 2024 calendars are now on sale at the usual outlets and on Roly's behalf reported that arrangements for the Golf Day are progressing well with very good sponsorship, but we still need more players.

President Paulette introduced DG Paul who commenced his presentation by praising the Club for achieving above its weight in a very competitive environment.  He then explained his personal thoughts on Rotary International – a global organisation of some 44,000 Clubs and 554 Districts with an ideal of Service above Self – a global family with a common bond.  It is what we do that attracts members to our Clubs as we see in Ukraine where membership has increased by over 50%.  Unfortunately, our District lost 5 Clubs last year but many of those Club’s members joined other Clubs and fewer larger Clubs are much better.  Rotary is adapting with many new Clubs being “cause based Clubs” like the newest Club in our District, Bris Pride with 22 members.  

DG Paul then touched on his District Goals starting with “togetherness” – we can do more and be more effective if Clubs work together and the AGs would be coordinating this.  Tackling the scourge of domestic violence is a high priority and purple shirts are available to wear at events and on “purple Fridays” like the End Polio campaign – there will be a walk on 1 December.  Thirdly, raising awareness of mental health issues – it is ok to talk and share.  The annual District Conference will be at Sea World on 8-10 March 2024 and will focus on Unlocking Our Potential.  Although not broken, Rotary needs a freshen up and he referred to the Japanese art of kintsugi where the end result is better than the original.  Finally, he mentioned that his Partners project is ShelterBox and thanked us for our support of this project. 

In answer to a question from MG, DG Paul updated us on the Regionalisation Pilot.  Apparently our second ballot only achieved 15% in favour – a huge drop from the 52% in favour at the first ballot – and there has been no enquiry into why this should be so.  Our District’s view is that the proposed model is flawed, there has not been enough consultation, younger potential members want outcomes, and this is not being addressed.  Many Districts that voted in favour are not happy and at least one is considering withdrawing from the Pilot.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
- First meeting of new board
It felt so different not having a couple of our regular faces attending board meetings with Bernice and Sherryl absent. For as long as I’ve been on the board Bernice has always been the secretary. As much as I’ll miss not seeing her and the wonderful work she’s done, I’m pleased for her as after over a decade on the board, she can finally take a break. Together with John, they’ve got so many holidays booked to enjoy. We had our new secretary, Michael Gregory, on board and he did a terrific job. We even finished the meeting in just over an hour this month!

- Committees
You may find yourself getting a call about joining a couple of our committees. The Membership committee and the Environment committee are looking for one or two more people to join each. If you would like to join either or even both of these committees, get in touch with Neil re the Environment one or Rick V or Craig re the Membership one.

- Everyone’s contact details are on the updated list that Bernice sent out a couple of weeks ago.

-Interesting Guest Speakers
Who would you like to hear as a guest speaker at our first meeting of each month? If you think you’ve got what it takes to organize a speaker a month for 10 months of the year, I’d like to hear from you. Michael has been finding us our speakers for ten years now and he’s earned a well deserved rest. So, it’s time for someone else to step up and do it. If you think you’d like to give it a go for a while, give me a call. I know some of our members have volunteered suggestions and Michael had found others from third parties or mentions in local media.
Talking about speakers, one of our more recent new members, Bruce Kelly, is going to be regaling us with some tories about his past at our next meeting on 19 July. 

- Welcome back
Greg Williams is back from his trip to Italy and is now sans moustache! Get ready to hear from him about his Italian adventures at our Business Meeting on 23 August. Ciao!

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 5TH JULY

President Paulette opened the meeting by welcoming our guests Scott Wassman (who was to be inducted) and his wife, Helen, and also partners Elaine Atkinson, Kerry Nieper and Judy Tilley, plus our guest speaker, Louise Webber, who is from the eRotary Club of Nurses and Midwives.

Rick Vickers then performed Scott's Induction. Scott was originally from Hawaii; he also had an electrical business in Brisbane, but both he and his wife now work for Queensland Health in Roma. Scott was also President of the Hamilton Rotary Club in Brisbane some years ago. Scott and his wife were welcomed by acclamation. Lionel Tilley will be Scott’s mentor.

Paulette then called forward Elaine A and Kerry N, and invited Mike G to speak.  Mike spoke of the Rotary Foundation’s array of projects that save and invigorate the lives of people around the world, and enhance international friendship and understanding, as today we recognise the lives of two beautiful ladies who demonstrate a shared purpose with the objectives of the Rotary Foundation to build world understanding and peace. We thank Elaine and Kerry for demonstrating in their lives and vocations, a commitment to helping persons in need here and around the world. They were then presented with the emblems of a Paul Harris Fellow – the Certificate and Lapel Pin, for their tangible and significant assistance to others, and to those in need.  We congratulate them both.

Paulette then asked for expressions of interest for the position of Membership/Marketing Director, and also someone to take over producing the Club Program, which would also involve finding one speaker each month.  She reminded us that planting day for the Koala Fodder was on Sunday 16th July.  There are 500 saplings to be planted , with the Council having dug the holes.  The MOU has now been signed.  

Roly N gave a brief update on the Golf Day.  We have 6 registrations so far.

Lionel T advised that the Calendar was going to the printer the following day.  We are using the same Graphic Artist we have used for the last 3 years.  98 photos were submitted.  The Calendar should be available by the end of the second week in August, and selling should commence by the end of August.  A huge ‘thank you’ to Lionel. 

Rick V advised that the Rotary Community Grants will open on the 15th July, and remain open for a period of 2 months.  $2,000 is available for each approved application.  The money is to be spent by the 10th December.

Chris B then conducted his fine session.  No one is safe, and there is no escape.  It is always a fun time.

Sherryl G introduced our Guest Speaker, Louise Webber, from the Global Rotary Club of Nurses and Midwives.  Louise is from Peregian on the Sunshine Coast, and her passion is skin/wound care.  She is a Wound Specialist and runs her own business. She has been a nurse for 30 years.  Due to computer/technical difficulties, Louise could not show us her presentations.  No problem, she talked us through her experiences.  The Global Rotary Nurses and Midwives Club was chartered in 2020 and Louise was asked to join.  They are a young Club and still finding their feet.  Most of the members are based in SE Queensland.  Their current President is based in Tanzania.  You must be a practising Nurse or Midwife to be a member.  Retired Nurses and Student Nurses are not eligible.  Fees are structured.  There are 3 tiers.  Nurses from Australia and developed countries pay a higher fee, whilst some members sponsor Nurses from other countries.  Members include Academics, Professors of Nursing, RN’S, Nurses/Midwives, including some who have worked with Medecins Sans Frontieres and the Mercy Ship, and those who have their own independent business.  They meet once a month internationally, and have a Guest speaker each month.  The logistics are interesting.  The Leadership team also meets once a month.  They also have a close association with the International College of Nurses.  One of the things that Louise noticed at our meeting on Wednesday night was the camaraderie between us, and she loved that.  She commented that they are not there yet, being such a young club, but it is challenging and fun.  They have 42 members from all over the world  -  Australia (WA, NSW and QLD), Mexico, Tanzania, Liberia, UK, Canada, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Rwanda, Malawi and Sierra Leone.  They are in the same District as we are, 9620.  One of their projects is to support Student Turkish Nurses who have lost their families, their homes and their University in the earthquake, and so cannot continue their studies.  They are hoping to raise $15,000.  A fundraiser is being held on the Sunshine Coast, a two day Conference, featuring Specialists on Wound Care, Diabetes, Mental Health, Aged Care and Clinicians.  They have 27 registrations for this. Their strengths are their clinical strengths and education.  They are also working on an International cookbook, with recipes from all over the world, which will sell as an ebook on line.  They support Solar Cases to the tune of $5,000 a year, as they do with Shelter Box.  The funds for Shelter Box are raised through Educational days, run by Louise and another nurse.  A raffle is usually included.  CPD (Continuing Professional Development) days are also run on a Cruise Ship.  These too, will include either a raffle or a Trivia Night. Shelter Boxes have been sent to the Philippines, PNG, and flood areas in N.S.W, as well as Turkey.    Another exciting innovation is the Three C’s Café.  This idea came from the UK. Training was provided for those responsible for running the Café.  They meet once a month, on line, and it is open to Nurses and Midwives all over the world.  It is a Forum for support for Nurses across the word, and a great way to share experiences.  People register via the website for the Three C’s Café, and a link is sent to them.  Networking with Nurses internationally brings home just how lucky we are in this country.  It is quite a diverse Club, but fascinating learning about other cultures.  The Club is always open to new ideas, and Louise especially likes the Calendar idea.  They want people who are passionate about Rotary, and want and need to bring their skills together……….find like-minded people, and explore what they can do.  There were several questions from the floor, and at the end, Fran T gave a vote of thanks.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

1. Well, first off a massive congratulations to all those on the sub committee for organizing such an amazingly successful inaugural Charity Golf Day at the Maleny Golf Club. I can’t believe we had such a big turnout of players and what about the best day weather wise that we could have asked for!! Over $9,000 profit is phenomenal and that’s a great sum to give to both Orange Sky, so they can help so many more homeless people, and to RAWCS to help those in Ukraine who have lost so much this year.

2. It’s AGM time at our next meeting! This is when we seek nominations for the committee starting 1 July 2023, which is a bit odd, when with most AGMs the existing roles are relinquished then and the new committee starts immediately after the AGM.

If you haven’t seen a copy of the Nomination Form that Bernice sent out this week, get in touch with Bernice and she’ll send you out a copy again. If you are seriously thinking about joining the committee and interested in any of the roles listed and maybe have a couple of questions, feel free to call me or one of the other current committee members about what’s involved.

The difference this year is with the Secretary’s position. It’s split into two parts now which will make it easier to do. The Secretary role is fine for someone to do who is looking to travel as it can all be done online. So as long as you have a phone and a laptop and an internet connection occasionally, there’s no reason to stay in Maleny for this position. 

So there is a new position of ‘Minutes Recorder’. For this you will have to attend the board meetings held each month and take the minutes and also send out the agenda, which is an existing template that simply transfers from month to month.

We already have someone showing a strong interest in one of the Director’s roles, so have a think about it. You can transition into one of the roles slowly over the next 7 months. Oh and by the way, I am super keen for someone who thinks the President role looks interesting in a couple of years to take on the President Elect role, which of course doesn’t start until 1 July 2023.

3. We are hopefully going to be busy next year with the Woodies Expo, confirmed for 2023, and then a few weeks later the Maleny Show. Also, it’s likely that we might be called on for our parking prowess again in early August for a major music event at the Showgrounds, to be organised by the Queensland Music Festival. They are talking about 5,000 people attending a one day event. We’ve already been approached to see if we’re interested in parking vehicles.

4. Lastly, we’ve got a Vocational Night on this month, now scheduled for 23 November. We are going to be given a tour of the new SES facilities on Macadamia Drive at 5.30pm and then we’ll go for yummy pizza and drinks at Jen’s Pizza at Finbars. We’ll be taking numbers attending at next week’s meeting and I’m sure there will be an email doing the rounds as well. Anyway, let Craig know if you are planning on coming along.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 2ND NOVEMBER

President Paulette welcomed 18 members and guest speaker Nathan Dodd to the meeting.

Greg W reported on the Festuri Multi Cultural Festival held at Beerwah on last Saturday, where our Club joined with the RC of Glasshouse Country in having a stall promoting Rotary. One positive from the event was that it looks like Glasshouse will gain a new member.

Craig S advised that there will be a vocational visit on November 23rd to the new SES and RFS headquarters in Maleny commencing at 5.30pm and afterwards having dinner at Jen’s Pizza. As Jen is not able to renew her lease at the Purple Palate complex, this will be the last opportunity for the Club to savour Jen’s Pizza’s.

Rick V advised that there will be an Australia Day event at the Showgrounds next year, although it will not be the same as previous years. At this stage there will be a Flag Raising ceremony at TS Centaur followed by a Citizenship Ceremony. It is not known at this stage if APEX will be putting on their traditional Breakfast. Rick will keep the Club updated as more information becomes available.

Jim A reported on the highly successful Golf Day held at the Maleny Golf Club on Friday 28th October. Fortunately the weather on the day was fine and warm and 73 golfers hit off at 9am. With the support of many sponsors and donations, the day was not only a success socially but financially. The golf competition raised $8,446 and, when the proceeds of the raffle are added, the total raised on the day was $9,283 which is an outstanding result. Jim thanked the organising committee of Roly, Lionel, Jeff, Craig and Greg for the smooth running of the day and particularly Roly, whose idea it was to have a Golf Day. Jim also thanked those members who helped on the day, particularly the breakfast BBQ cooks who were run off their feet cooking bacon and eggs for the hungry Golfers!!! It is hoped to run another Golf Day in 2023, probably in late September.

Greg advised that the “Lift the Lid” walk for mental health that was to be held in Maleny has been cancelled .

Paulette reminded members that the Maleny Christmas Festival will be held in Maple Street on 9 December. The Club will be running a BBQ outside the Maleny Food Co on the night, as well as storytelling.

Talking of storytelling, Sergeant Chris was back on deck again and was up to his old tricks of fining members for anything and everything - some true and some not so true!!

Phillip introduced the Guest Speaker  Nathan Dodd. Nathan, who lives in North Maleny, is a Level 3 cricket coach. Nathan who hails from Lismore (Go the Blues!!!) had a love of cricket since his early days of playing in his back yard. He eventually moved to Sydney to further his cricket career, playing Grade Cricket for the strong Manly Warringah Cricket Club. He soon realised that he had a talent for coaching, so successfully undertook a level 3 coaching course with Cricket Australia. His first coaching position was with the Sandgate-Redcliff Club, where he enjoyed considerable success. He was then appointed as coach of the Australian Men’s Disability Cricket team. The team consists of men who have an IQ of lower than 75 and with a permanent intellectual disability. He was with the team as they played competitions in many countries around the world. Nathan stressed that Cricket Australia gave the Australian Disability team the same level of support that they give to all Australian Teams, from having the same uniforms to having similar support staff. Nathan said that he really enjoyed seeing the members of the team grow both as cricketers and young men. His coaching career also took him to Nepal, where he was coach of one of the franchised teams in Nepal. He said it was very different coaching a franchise team than it was coaching the national team. As well as playing in front of crowds of 20,000 plus, the franchise owners expected results and didn’t take “no” for an answer. Nathan has also coached the Northern Territory women’s team, and is currently assisting ex Qld Bulls player Chris Wildermuth as he attempts to again play first class cricket.

Jim thanked Nathan for his interesting talk and expressed his delight that there was now another “Blues” supporter in Maleny!!!

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 19TH OCTOBER

President Paulette opened the meeting by welcoming members to a Business Meeting with special reference to our returning Sergeant - who earned the first fine of the night by making a hash of the Loyal Toast.

Bernice once more gave an update on our members who were experiencing health problems and wished them all a speedy recovery.

Roly N reported that the weather forecast for the Rotary Golf Day on 28 October was good and that registrations were rising.  He was confident that there would be at least 60 players and hopefully more.  There were a couple of slots for volunteers to assist with the catering and these were filled.

Chris B said that he had been approached by the organiser of the 2023 Wood Expo to see if Rotary would be willing to undertake the responsibility for car parking at that event - audible sigh of relief from Jim A and others.

Greg W announced that a ‘Lift the Lid’ walk was being arranged for 13 November to raise awareness of mental health issues. It will be a "Fun Event" from 8am to 10am and will be from the showgrounds to the Beersheba Museum on the Precinct and back again. A similar event had recently been organised by RC of Mooloolaba.

Jim A reported that he had talked with the owner of Maleny Food Co and there was the possibility of the Club using his premises for the Maleny Street Carnival.

P Paulette noted that 30 November was a Vocational night and that Craig S was looking at a possible options.  She also thanked Roly and Kerry for their generous offer to host the Club's Christmas Party at their home on 21 December.

Those members present were able to welcome our Sergeant back to duty.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Bernice, John, Greg, Sherryl and myself visited the relatively new Moreton Bay campus of the University of the Sunshine Coast at the end of September. Members from about 6-7 Sunshine Coast Rotary clubs attended on the day. Based in Petrie, a two minute walk from the train station on the site of the Petrie paper mill, it’s a prime location to get students from a broad area. Also, there aren’t any university campuses nearby. People either have to travel to inner city Brisbane or to the Sunshine Coast.

They have already exceeded their anticipated numbers and are pushing forward with Stage 2 earlier than planned and Stage 3 is already in the design process. 

I guess, as with many educational establishments these days, there are a lot of collaborative and interactive areas. The lecture theatres of years ago don’t exist anymore with smaller workshop like areas for smaller tutorials which are far more popular. There is one large auditorium which can be used for special events and is also able to be hired out to other organizations or companies.

Some interesting stats given to us were that 49% of students are the first in their household to attend university and 51% are over 20 years old (and much greater than 20). A very interesting visit.

What’s coming up on our calendar for the rest of the year?

On Sunday 16 October, Maleny Bowls Club are having an open day with an Octoberfest theme. It will go from 10am to 3pm and people can come along and have a go at bowling from 10am to 12pm and then socialise after that with food being catered for by Lions. There will be sausages, including German ones, and drinks at the bar with German beer available as well.

Rotary has been invited to run a raffle and we thought it would be a good idea to be seen and support a local club as well. So prizes have been gathered, and we will sell raffle tickets from 10am to 1.30pm when the winning tickets will then be drawn. If the Club makes a couple of hundred dollars, that will be good and will go straight into our coffers. I’ve sent a separate email as we need a couple more people to volunteer for a couple of hours to help out at this event.

Next on Friday 28 October our inaugural Golf Day will take place. We’re working on this being a successful event and I think we still probably need a couple of more people to volunteer to help out at this event. Roly has sent out an email with the relevant information so contact him if you can assist. 

Then on Sunday 13 November, we’re having a ‘Lift the Lid’ walk to raise awareness of mental health issues. It will be from 8am to 10am and isn’t a long walk. From the showgrounds to the Beersheba museum on the Precinct and back again. We’ll give you some more details at our next meeting and in emails.

Wednesday 30 November will be a vocational night and Craig is trying to organize a fun event which will most likely involve food and drink. Always a good combination!

So a bit coming up before Christmas and of course we’ll have our traditional Christmas dinner meeting on 21 December. And this year Roly and Kerry have kindly offered to hold it at their home. So more details to follow about that.

One last thing I’d like to mention. Since Covid curtailed some of our more lucrative fund raising events such as the Woodies Expo and we had a year without the Maleny Show, our income has fallen compared with earlier years. So, that’s why the Woolies Sausage Sizzles, the Australia Zoo carparking and anything else helps to boost our funds to allow the Club to continue to support worthwhile causes like World Polio, Shelterbox, Rotary Health etc. In some instances, we’ve had to reduce the amounts we had given in the past as it simply was not viable.

Those events and the others we support help us to be able to donate to these great causes, normally including the local community grants which unfortunately did not happen this year. However, we need people to put their hands up and volunteer so it doesn’t get left to the same people doing it all the time. So please read the emails Bernice sends out requesting assistance as there’s nothing worse for her than deafening silence.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 21ST SEPTEMBER

Past President Greg, standing in for President Paulette who was not well, opened the meeting by welcoming members and our Guest Speakers Clare Christiansen and John Green. After a false start on the Loyal Toast, the meeting got under way.

Bernice gave an update on our members who were experiencing health problems – Malcolm B, Alan W, Bill H, Lionel T, Fran T, Laurelle O and Chris B, who had been sighted in town earlier in the day. She endorsed the best wishes from those present for a speedy recovery to them all.

Sherryl G gave an update on her meeting with Andrew Wallace on child exploitation.

 Mike G announced the disappointment that, due to insufficient votes, our District had failed to approve the new Regionalisation Pilot Project. Ours was the only District polled that did not approve the proposal. It is now up to RI to determine what the next steps will be. 

Jeff C asked for vacancies to be filled at kiosk for calendar sales on 15 October and Roly gave an update on the Charity Golf Day due on 28 October.

Neal A announced that his platypus walking tours had been written up in the latest Lonely Planet guide for Queensland - many congratulations Neal.

Roly, with the Sergeant's hat on, managed to extract fines from nearly all with dubious facts about the accused and astute observations from spies (Jim) on unsuspecting members (Renee).

Ric T introduced our guest speakers from Orange Sky, volunteers Clare Christiansen and John Green. They told us that Orange Sky had been founded by two young men, Lucas and Nick, wanting to give some practical help to the homeless and disadvantaged, managed to set up a van as a mobile laundry by fitting it with washer/dryers. This was so appreciated that additional vans were added as funds were donated. For their efforts they were named 2016 Young Australians of the Year. 

Our speakers explained that the benefit is more than just doing laundry, its about connecting with people. It’s the socialising, the care factor and giving some hope. Symbolically each visit site has the laundry van and six orange chairs to sit, connect, discuss and understand the plight of those attending.

A simple amount of $49 will pay for a shift of 12 wash loads. Orange Sky is a registered charity and all donations go to the running of the vans and supplying the laundry service free of charge to anyone who attends. The volunteers are non-judgemental about who has their laundry done.

We noted that Orange Sky is one of the charities our Golf Day is supporting, so John and Clare promised some promotional material to raise awareness of their activities.

Rick V thanked John and Clare for their informative presentation and the insights into many aspects of those less fortunate than ourselves. Both were presented with a calendar and the world renowned shopping bag. Renee snapped the photo for the next bulletin.

Ex President Greg wished all a safe journey home and reminded us to wear a silly hat (or not so silly) to the next meeting. Meeting finished a bit late but well worth it.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 21ST SEPTEMBER

President Paulette opened this meeting by welcoming Members and our Guest Speaker John Christensen and his wife Marg.  Bernice reported that Alan Wilson has been making good progress during his Brisbane hospital stay; she also provided an update on Malcolm, Chris and Bill. All members wished these colleagues well.

The progress on various projects was discussed:

Maleny Rotary Golf Day - Roly gave a further update on this event to be held on 28 October.  Advertising continues and more sponsors are coming forward. The numbers registering to play are still low but this is expected to pick up as the event date approaches.  A number of Club volunteers will be needed on the day. 

Australia Zoo parking - Paulette sought and found a volunteer for the vacancy on the roster - thank you Murray.

Roly N, standing if for the Sergeant, introduced the novel approach of "Dob Yourself In" - not sure if this will catch on? 

The Club enjoyed the privilege of an evening with John Christensen to get an oversight of the fascinating history of the Australian Constitution.  Whilst slowly exploring our great land, John, who is supported by his wife Marg, is sharing his extensive knowledge about the Constitution with Clubs, schools, community groups or anyone who is interested in the hope that Australia will embrace his idea that the Constitution should be 'relocated' from the English statute books to Australia's statute books. With the donning of various hat prompts and an occasional song, John was very animated as he led us through the historical drivers and political processes that culminated in the proclamation of the Constitution Act on 1 January 1901.

 

As the independent colonies of Australia settled in to relatively stable responsible government entities in the late 1800s and European territorial ambitions in the Pacific region from French, German and Portuguese interests raised fears of possible conquest, our political leaders (along with NZ) held a Colonial Conference in 1890 which decided to hold a Constitutional Convention in Sydney in 1891. Matters to be decided included levels of representation from the different size colonies, trade protectionism, model for Federation and individual and federal responsibilities.

Drought, recession, bank failures and changes in government saw the process falter through the 1890s until the 1897-98 Constitutional Convention at which Queensland was not represented and NZ had decided to no longer be considered part of the federation. All colonies except WA approved a draft Constitution by referendum. To give legal status to the Constitution it had to be incorporated in UK statute but commencement of the Bill was delayed pending Proclamation on 1 January 1901, by which time WA had agreed.

 

Although he does not expect to witness the relocation of our Constitution to Australian statute, John strongly advocates for a referendum to achieve just that. He would like the document to be printed in one piece to be displayed in a prominent National location (probably Canberra) with the Commonwealth, States and Territories appointing citizens of note to gather at a ceremony and witness the document with their signatures.

His audience will remember his song celebrating the three components of our constitution - Parliament, Executive and Judiciary.

I read in the local newspaper that Bunnings were having a special of "Council Recliners".

I got curious as I had never heard of a "Council Recliner" so I went to Bunnings to find out what these things were.

Guess what?  I've had one in the shed for years!

I just had not figured out how to use it properly!
