PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

The Club participated in the ANZAC Day parade march along Maple St and it was tremendous to see such a good turnout of our members for this our first time as a Club in I don’t know how many years. A big thanks has to be given to Fran who suggested it after noticing our absence from the parade last year. Many of us attend the event each year, however we’ve not combined before to represent our Rotary Club. I trust this will be the first of many years to join our community on this special remembrance day.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 17 APRIL
With President Paulette on COVID induced sick leave, PE Scott W took the reins and chaired our Business Meeting. He warmly welcomed back Ric T to his first meeting for some months. It was a pleasure to witness Ric demonstrating that he is still as sharp as ever. 

Items of Business

Maleny Selectors Green Working Bee

Greg W advised that MDSRC has requested about 6 Rotarians to form a working bee for 2 to 3 hours one morning within the next few weeks to remove cobblers pegs and other weeds from the gardens and whipper snip/brushcut the edges of the gardens. A start time around 8 o'clock is suggested. David Lowden will also be attending with his team to assist, and will provide a truck with mulch to spread on the garden beds after weeding is completed.

David L has advised that suitable dates for him will be 30 April or or 7 May. If members able to assist could advise Greg by email or mobile 0400224401 as to their availability on either date, he will confirm arrangements.

Greg W also thanked all our members who had attended the MDSRC Strategic Planning Workshops and made valuable contributions to the Plan.

Greg W further raised an out of left field concept that the Club consider for the 2025 Maleny Agricultural Show supporting and/or organising a novel new event for the Maleny Agricultural Show, such as: 

(a) a ‘BBQ’ competition with a gas BBQ setup, searing steaks and sausages etc. quickly over direct flame; it’s the heartbeat of Australian cuisine and/or

(b) an American Style BBQ or Low and Slow BBQ competition with an indirect cooking method where the flame never directly touches the meat. It usually involves a water pan for moisture and low temperatures (115-120c) over long periods (up to 14 hours). It’s only authentic BBQ if its smoked over charcoal or wood. No gas.

Interest in such activities have grown in the past few years. Anyone who wishes to help developing the idea further should contact Greg.  Roly N also spoke of the need for Agricultural Shows in general requiring new ideas to hold and attract new attendees to their events.   

The Storage Container 

Rick V and Scott W reported that a keen Rotary team had attended at the Container and performed an excellent clean out task, retaining important information, documents, marquees, BBQs and a filing cabinet in the container, whilst other items, reusable or scrap, were taken to the Witta Tip. Many thanks to all members who assisted in this task.

Wood Expo

Chris B spoke to the club regarding the work required for the upcoming Maleny Wood Expo. A lot of spaces have been filled on the time sheets for the 3 days, but members should not be surprised to get a call in the event of the need for extra assistance. Chris B and the Showgrounds Committee are monitoring the weather over the next few days and hoping for some fine weather to dry out the grounds.

There are other possibilities for parking if the Maleny Showgrounds are too wet for parking vehicles, but such other possibilities may not include our members if too dangerous - such as on street parking. 

Anzac Day

Chris B also reminded members of the times and places of services on Anzac Day 25 April.

Fran T confirmed to members that the Club would be marching for the first time and will have 2 o 3 Interactors available to carry our Rotary Banner. About 8 Rotarians expected to march with the Club, whilst Chris B, Rick V and Neil A will march with the Vets, and Rick V is also MC.

Roly N reminded members that the Maleny Agricultural Show is just around the corner on 31May and  1 June. Please keep the dates free as its all hands on deck at our Rotary Foodstall.

Guest Speaker

Following another top fines session from Chris B, Bruce K gave a fantastic report summarising the work that has been done within our International Relations Portfolio to make contact with and receive a basic framework from our member Cougar Lutze, Rotary Arusha President Linda Baas and Rotary Arusha Project Manager Christophe Eme for a new international project in which our Club could be involved. The project at John Paul II Physiotherapy Rehabilitation Centre at Monduli, Tanzania may run from one to three years involving:  

• building /creating a vegetable garden, 

• purchase of dairy cows for milk

• purchase of chickens for eggs and meat

• planting of fruit trees 

Bruce is further exploring the project and will update the board and the club in the near future with more details and costings. 

Bruce is also exploring a safe way to contact the Rotary Club in Cherkasy, Ukraine which is located very close to the front line of the war with Russia.  If contact is established, the proposal ls that talks begin to establish their situation, what their immediate or most pressing needs are, and how we may be best able to provide assistance to them.

Greg thanked Bruce  for his detailed report, for all the backroom work done for its preparation and delivery, and for the opportunities that may spring from this work in the future.

 PRESIDENT'S NOTES
Our next meeting at the Maleny Hotel on 16 March  will be a Project/Business Meeting. Subject to any further changes and or the adverse impacts of Covid 19, continue logging in at the Maleny Hotel with your Qld App, but there is now no need to wear masks. We can all look forward to some good fellowship and updates from Directors on our various local and international projects. There will also be a joint presentation by Tim Bagshaw and Donna Hayes about the progress being made by Maleny Hydrotherapy towards the leasing of land, plus the construction and management of a new Hydrotherapy Centre at the Maleny Community Precinct.

- District 9620 Conference in Caloundra 18, 19 and 20 March:
Despite my many calls that the registration date was closing on 7 March, it is still possible to make a late registration for any of the Friday, Saturday or Sunday sessions of the inaugural District 9620 Conference to be held in beautiful Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast from 18th to 20th March. The countdown is really on with only 7 days until opening. I am hoping that as many Maleny Rotarians as possible are able to make the journey down the hill to celebrate the coming together of two great Districts and get to know fellow Rotarians and make new friends within our expanded District in a relaxed atmosphere. Our club is also preparing a static type display for the House of Friendship with an emphasis on our Speak Up Now Stop Domestic & Family Violence & Elder Abuse plus the Maleny Selectors Green project.
If you would like to lend a hand in putting together our display, please give Bernice McL, Sherryl G or myself. I will be collecting and driving the displays down to the Conference on Friday next week to assist Bernice & John  McL with the setting up of the displays in place at 3 pm on 17th March.

- Rotary Youth Driver Education at Corbould Park Caloundra for 2022:
Some great news from Paulette S and Fran T following their attendance at a RYDA Caloundra meeting on 2nd March incorporating Caloundra, Caloundra Pacific, Glasshouse Country and Maleny Rotary Clubs. For the 2022 year, there will be 10 program days with 14 high schools attending at Corbould Park. It will be held in the 3rd & 4th school term. The year 10 students will either have or be very close to having their 'L's by this time of the year. Club contributions are dependent on the number of high schools in their area. Maleny and Glasshouse Country Clubs have one high school in their area and are considered small clubs and will be paying $500 per year toward the program. The Road Safety Education and Department of Transport and Main Roads are coming on board for funding purposes. Maleny State High School is scheduled to attend on 21st July; our Club will be required to assist with the running of the program on some of the days, including when students from Maleny SHS are attending. So please pencil in this date and another in late July for some fantastic youth focused community service. At our last Board Meeting it was resolved to make our payment of $500 towards our membership of RYDA Caloundra.

- Maleny Selectors Green:
Many thanks to Jeff C for organising a team of Maleny Rotary volunteers to undertake a hands on working bee to weed the native shrubs and groundcover beds – removing kikuyu grass, cobblers pegs etc on 7th March. Despite the shocking humidity, it was amazing what was achieved by the team within just 2 hours. The native garden beds are now looking so much better for our team’s hard but caring work. We were ably assisted by Mike Norman from MDSRC and Mark Hutchins who was driving Dave Lowden’s truck to collect all of the grass and weeds removed from the beds. Gail Denver was also on hand to provide a refreshing morning tea. 

 

 - Foundation/ International Queensland and New South Wales Flood Appeal:
I hope we can all reflect on how lucky we are to be residing up here on the Blackall and Conondale Ranges which by and large have been spared from the scars and damage incurred in so much of SE Qld and Northern NSW from the recent rain events.  Unfortunately Craig S’s home was not so lucky, suffering damage from fallen trees. Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS) has registered a Rotary Australia Relief Fund Project which is a national flood appeal to raise funds for assistance to flood victims of Qld and NSW. Donations can be made through RAWCS and are tax deductible.

- Crisis in Ukraine:
In response to the refugee crisis caused by the ongoing war in Ukraine, The Rotary Foundation has decided to prioritise contributions made to the Disaster Response Fund until 30th April 2022 to support disaster response grants to districts affected by these events. These expedited disaster response grants can be used to supply water, food, medicines, shelter and clothing. Half a million people have fled Ukraine and are in dire need of emergency aid.  Rotary Clubs in Europe and around the world have stepped up their relief work, some working on the ground to help displaced families.
The UN estimates that the number of refugees could reach as many as 5 million people being displaced. Our Club's contribution to The Rotary Foundation Disaster Fund will be discussed at a future meeting.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 2ND FEBRUARY
Jim A, standing in in for President Greg who was present but recovering from dental surgery, welcomed members and our Guest Speaker.

Fran T reported that she was in discussions with the River School about a year 5-6 project.  She was also in touch with principals about the Maleny Education Support Fund.

Roly N suggested that flood appeal funds could go to RAWCS.  This may be advertised in the local press.  Craig S said there would be no participation in the Mud Army in Brisbane at the weekend.  It was mooted from the floor that, were the club able to support such activity, then assisting the Gympie area might be a better option.

Our Guest Speaker was Nerilee Sowter from Destiny Rescue. This is a registered charity whose mission is to rescue children from sexual exploitation and human trafficking and help them stay free. This is done through their rescue operations, reintegration programs and prevention efforts. They are active in countries where the need to save is great.

Nerilee's presentation featured the rescue of a young girl in the Philippines. Typically a child’s rescue from the sex trade means nothing if they cannot keep her from falling back into that place of exploitation. The process of keeping her free starts immediately after her rescue by meeting whatever needs she has that allow her to take the first steps toward freedom. Typically she enters a transitional home providing a safe place while a longer-term solution is found.

Nerilee's presentation followed the history of one rescued child with excellent graphics. Craig S gave the vote of thanks.

Our next meeting at the Maleny Hotel on 2 March is a General Meeting. Subject to any further changes and or the adverse impacts of Covid 19, continue logging in at the Maleny Hotel with your Qld App, and bring your masks although they are not required whilst seated to drink and eat. My understanding is that the easing of restrictions to mask wearing in Queensland for places such as hotels will not take place until 6pm 4 March.
We can all look forward to an evening of strong fellowship and a challenging presentation from our guest speaker Nerilee Sowter of Destiny Rescue in relation to the rescue of children from sexual trafficking, prostitution, slavery and human exploitation.

- District 9620 Conference in Caloundra 18, 19 and 20 March
My understanding from the Conference website is that registrations are still open for each session of the Conference including the Gala Dinner on Saturday night. But time is running out. Members may have to wait for several years for another conference in our local area given the expansion of the new District. I hope as many of our members as possible can join with me in attending one or more sessions to celebrate the coming together of two great Districts and get to know your fellow Rotarians in a relaxed atmosphere. - Maleny Selectors Green
Just a reminder that Jeff Cornfoot has placed a call out to members for assistance to remove kikuyu and cobblers pegs from our native gardens on Maleny Selectors Green on 3 March, weather permitting, from 7.30 am. Any questions to Jeff on 0448830030. We can also expect some assistance from David Coffey and a couple more local Lions members.

- Official Rotary Club of Maleny Club Photographer:
It is with great pleasure that I note that the Club unanimously appointed Renee Harris as our club photographer with Rick Vickers as her deputy at our last meeting. Looking forward to viewing some of Renee’s handiwork after our next meeting.

- And a Spring Date Claimer for 2 September for all members of the Club.
Roly Nieper has been prudently working with his Rotary team and Stephen Porter of the Maleny Golf Club and has booked the Maleny Golf Course for the Inaugural Annual Rotary Club of Maleny Golf Day on Friday 2 September. Further details of this active, fun and healthy event will be made available in the coming months.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 2ND FEBRUARY
President Greg opened this Business Meeting by welcoming the members present. He noted that the dates for the District Conference ,to be held in Caloundra from 18 to 20 March, were fast approaching.

Sherryl G reported that Angela and CL are stepping down from administering the Maleny Education Fund. Relacements will be appointed. The Fund has a balance of $4,000 and more community donations will be required. It fills a very useful and discreet role.

Speak Up Now - Plenty of safety cards left over to hand out.

Domestic Violence Prevention Month will be held in May.

Rotary Australia Health celebrates its 40th anniversary. Millions of dollars have been raised since its inception.

Rick V reported that it had been a difficult year both for the Club and Rotary International because of Covid 19. This has severely limited our ability to raise funds for selected and new projects. Never the less funds were donated to traditional recipients such as Shelter Box, Polio Plus and others.

Roly N announced that the Club intended to sponsor an initial Golf Day at the Maleny Golf Club on 2 September. A committee of Greg, Craig, Lionel, Jeff and Jim has been formed.  They will be looking for volunteers to assist on the actual day which will require a total Club involvement.

Jeff Cornfoot gave an update on the Maleny Selectors Green project. Volunteers will soon be required to do some weeding of the garden beds.

Paulette S said that a grant application was being made to pay for koala friendly trees to assist a Mapleton group.

Craig S announced that he was looking at Australia Zoo or the new Fire Station as possible locations for vocational visits.

President Greg Williams reported that the Sunshine Coast Council have requested expressions of interest for a steering committee to look at the conversion of 65 acres of donated land at the rear of  Mary Cairncross Park to an Environmental Park, to enhance the total area and to support it as a major draw card for the hinterland region.

EVEN CIVIL SERVANTS HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOUR

Lt. Colonel Robert Maclaren retired from the British Army in 2001 after a long fulfilling career. On the day that he retired, he received a letter from the Personnel Department of the Ministry of Defence setting out details of his pension and, in particular, the tax-free ‘lump sum’ award, (based upon completed years of service), that he would receive in addition to his monthly pension.

The letter read:

“Dear Lt. Colonel Maclaren,
We write to confirm that you retired from the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards on 1st March 2001 at the rank of Lt Colonel, having been commissioned into the British Army at Edinburgh Castle as a 2nd Lieutenant on 1st February 1366. Accordingly your lump sum payment, based on years served, has been calculated as £68,500. You will receive a cheque for this amount in due course.

Yours sincerely,

Army Paymaster”

Lt.Colonel Maclaren replied;

“Dear Paymaster,
Thank you for your recent letter confirming that I served as an officer in the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards between 1st February 1366 and 1st March 2001 – a total period of 635 years and 1 month. I note however that you have calculated my lump sum to be £68,500. This seems to be considerably less than it should be bearing in mind my length of service since I received my commission from King Edward III.

By my calculation, allowing for interest payments and currency fluctuations, my lump sum should actually be £6,427,586,619.47p.

I look forward to receiving a cheque for this amount in due course.

Robert Maclaren (Lt Col Retd)”

A month passed by and then in early April, a stout manilla envelope from the Ministry of Defence in Edinburgh dropped through Col Maclaren’s letter box, it read:

“Dear Lt Colonel Maclaren,

We have reviewed the circumstances of your case as outlined in your recent letter to us dated 8th March inst. We do indeed confirm that you were commissioned into the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards by King Edward III at Edinburgh Castle on 1st February 1366, and that you served continuously for the following 635 years and 1 month. We have re-calculated your pension and have pleasure in confirming that the lump sum payment due to you is indeed £6,427,586,619.47p.

However, we also note that according to our records you are the only surviving officer who had command responsibility during the following campaigns and battles; The Wars of the Roses 1455 -1485 (Including the battles of Bosworth Field, Barnet and Towton), The Civil War 1642 -1651 (Including the battles Edge Hill, Naseby and the conquest of Ireland), The Napoleonic War 1803 – 1815 (including the battle of Waterloo and the Peninsular War), The Crimean War (1853 – 1856) (including the battle of Sevastopol and the Charge of the Light Brigade), The Boer War (1899 -1902).

We would therefore wish to know what happened to the following, which do not appear to have been returned to Stores by you on completion of operations:

9765 Cannon

26,785 Swords

12,889 Pikes

127,345 Rifles (with bayonets)

28,987 horses (fully kitted)

Plus three complete marching bands with instruments and banners.

We have calculated the total cost of these items and they amount to £6,427,518,119.47p. We have therefore subtracted this sum from your lump sum, leaving a residual amount of £68,500, for which you will receive a cheque in due course.

Don’t forget to log in with your Qld App and continue bringing your masks - which can be removed when seated.  I look forward to Jim A taking over the Chair to conduct our AGM and the election of President Elect Paulette S as our Incoming President for 2021/2022 and President Elect for 2022/2023 and the rest of Paulette’s team. We can all be very confident that the Club will be in great hands next year and beyond.

Representatives from each of our 3 successful grant recipient organisations will also be in attendance for the presentation with their grant monies and to inform us of their respective projects and how it will benefit their organisation and our community.

In the meantime, we are all hoping Roly N, Brian A, and Neil A continue with their recoveries.

Maleny Selectors Green Project: A huge thank you to Jeff C, Bill H, and Murray A for joining with me on 8 November for an early start at 7am at Maleny Selectors Green to undertake a further Rotary working bee. 

In what initially looked like being a wash out, we joined with Mike Norman and Dave Lowden to plant out 25 replacement shrubs and groundcovers, plus a 2m tall red flowering North Qld Waratah adjacent to the Rotary Bench at the lower end of the park space.  We also removed the metal garden edging and replaced it with timber edging of the same timber as used by the Maleny Garden Club around the heritage Camelia Gardens. These fellows worked like troopers to get the work done before 11 am.

David Lowden and his work team returned to remove the collected metal and plastic rubbish and a mountain of weeds. They will spread the pile of bark around the lower Rotary bench seat, which will also need some timber edging in due course. Following our recent Board meeting Bernice McLennan is also making inquiries from Lionel Tilley as to the whereabouts of any metal Rotary wheels for installation on all of our benches at Maleny Selectors Green and Mary Cairncross Reserve.

Rotary Centenary in Australia Peace Pole Project:  At 9 am on 12 November, Rick V and I attended a beautiful dedication ceremony for the Rotary Peace Pole at The River School. Rick V commenced proceedings with a background of our Peace Pole project to raise awareness of the need to promote world peace and understanding as our centenary gift as part of an Australia wide project to mark 100 years of Rotary in Australia in April 2021. We were then impressed with the unique contribution from each of the children in speaking about the importance of peace and then reciting in four languages (Spanish, Japanese, Dutch and English) the message of "May Peace Prevail on Earth" and with a circular bench surrounding the Peace pole constructed by one of the fathers, Matthew Penniket. Cr Johnston also gave a fine set of observations about the importance of peace, starting locally. 

For those in the club who want to see where this and other poles are located in Australia, that information is at the website  canberrarotarypeacebell.org.  Once there, press the Peace Pole button on the top banner (with News, Peace Bell, Honour Board etc) and below you will see a chart. Open that chart to see the full list in numerical order of poles, and then go to Peace Pole 129 for the River School Maleny. Unfortunately, Rick V reports that at this stage it is not interactive or visual; it is just a list with some sparse comments. The statement needs to be amended (as it was drafted before the pole had arrived) and a picture added. Judy Fredriksen was also available to take some photos and recorded the speeches for an article in the next edition of the Hinterland Times. Some photos  of the 4 sided 6 ft Peace Pole and surrounding timber sea are attached. Rick V commenced the project with the River School in Maleny during 2020 and I especially want to thank Malcolm Baker who worked with Rick and myself to install the Peace Pole. Some quick facts about the Rotary Peace Pole program: It had its beginnings in 1955 in Japan by Masahisa Goi, in the wake of the destruction wrought by World War II and the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. You can now find more than 250,000 Peace Poles in close to 200 countries in every region and continent on earth. Peace Poles are planted with the Universal Peace Message “May Peace Prevail on Earth”. They symbolise our common wish for a World at Peace. They stand as a silent vigil for peace reminding us to think and act in the spirit of Peace. The Peace message is written in four languages - one for each side panel of the Peace Pole. It was an absolute pleasure to work with our team and Principal Anne Donoghoe and other staff to install the Peace Pole and we can be assured that the students, staff, parents and friends of the school can share reflections of peace throughout the world in this fantastic new Peace Space at the River School.

- SUN Elder Abuse Forum:  Our SUN collaborative partnership is holding a second Elder Abuse Forum at the Maleny RSL on 13th December with a 9am start and all are welcome to attend. Please let Sherryl G or me know if you would like to come along. Everyone who attended the forum last year found it very interesting and helpful, particularly leading into the Xmas New Year period when many families are together and have the opportunity to discuss and or are confronted with difficult life choices.

- Our 2021 Xmas Party: is on 15 December at the home of Jim and Elaine Atkinson. It is a partners event. 

- Our Xmas Tree Lights Display at the Uniting Church in Maleny will be up and running during the last two weeks of December prior to Xmas. A site has been selected on the eastern side of the Church building with access to power. Jim A and Roly N are working on a lights budget and lighting plan.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 3RD NOVEMBER
President Greg opened the meeting with a welcome to all Rotarians and three guests. He passed on his best wishes on behalf of the Club to Brian Allen who remains in hospital.

The Club's Christmas Party will now be held on 15th December at Jim and Elaine Atkinson's home. 

Selectors Green: Lionel updated the members on the progress with the Kids activity area at Selectors Green. Several large logs and rocks will be delivered this week which will need to be put in place in the “play” area.

Our guest Jared Ashcroft, who is well known in town for his work with the SES and RFS, was planning to raise funds for Beyond Blue by taking part in the Bridge to Bridge run in Brisbane and requested support from the Club.  He also indicated a desire to be considered for membership of the Club.

Sergeant Chris then showed that his spell of sick leave had not blunted his extortion abilities.

Our guest speaker was Shannon Horsfall who is a published children's author. Shannon was awarded the University Medal of Excellence at USC on completing her first class Honours (Creative Writing) and is currently undertaking a PhD in Creative Writin.  She is currently six months into a three-year PhD research project at the Sunshine Coast University. Shannon’s address was titled Writing into the Unspeakable: storytelling trauma and recovery in the aftermath of domestic abuse. Shannon indicated that, whilst there is little reliable data on how many adults grew up with domestic violence in Australia, it was estimated by an ABS survey that before the age of 15 nearly 2.1 million children had witnessed violence towards their mother and nearly 820,000 towards their father. Children in such situations live in fear of their home, feel defenceless and responsible for protecting their mothers and siblings – they are also victims. 

Children normalise the abuse in order to live with it, with the result it silences their experience. To expose these impacts, the positioning of the child within the familial abusive environment requires exploration.  This includes societal assumptions around the roles of women and children in the past, and how the meaning of familial violence has been shaped by dominant social institutions.

Because of the restricted definition of abuse, that is limited to the realm of intimate relationships, children are situated as collateral damage with the result the experiences of children are marginalised or completely unrecognised – they are simply not asked to tell their story on the assumption hat adults know what is best for them. Shannon cited the National Children’s Commissioner, Megan Mitchell, who in 2017 indicated that domestic violence, across all cultures, is a significant risk factor for youth suicides. Shannon’s research project aims to illuminate the necessity for a child to have agency over their lived experience and for their experiences to be heard by the institutions which make decisions on their behalf. Phillip Stark gave the vote of thanks.

I look forward to listening to an interesting presentation from our guest speaker Shannon Horsfall, a published children's author. Her research endeavours to expose the problematic silencing of the child experience of domestic abuse. 

Parking at Australia Zoo: Many thanks to our Rotarians including Rick V who answered the urgent call from the Rotary Club of Glasshouse Mountains to assist with parking at Australia Zoo over the past weekend where the Qld Government have held a pop up COVID 19 vaccination program.

Maleny Selectors Green: A further thank you to Lionel T and Jeff C for joining with me last Thursday morning at the Maleny Selectors Green with Clare Staines, Principal Landscape Architect from Councils Landscape Design Planning Department within Council to watch the final layout and placement of 70 lineal metres of hardwood logs and massive basalt rocks by David Lowden for the interactive landscape design of the childrens’ play area. We also had an opportunity to meet with Scott Bain and members of the Garden Club to discuss the selection of some more native plants to replace those native plants that have been eaten by hares or not survived the winter. We can all be proud of the multi-layered and collaborative way in which this space has taken shape over the past few years, and the spectacular vistas that are available for residents and visitors to enjoy. A working bee has been called for at 7 am on 1 November to spread around mulch being delivered by David Lowden between the rocks and logs, so if any members and Friends of Rotary are available, please bring along a rake and or shovel for a few hours of satisfying shaded landscaping under the top Moreton Bay fig tree.

1. Our Rotary District 9620 AGM is being held at 9 am on Sunday 7 at Phil Boron Centre (Bostock House), Ellerton Drive, Wacol, Qld, 4076. I will be attending for voting purposes, but am keen to have other Rotarians attend along with me and learn more about our Rotary organisation. 

2. The Kenny Cluster RAWCs Display is on 20 November from 1 PM to 4 pm at 7 David Low Way North Shore Mudjimba

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 20TH OCTOBER

President Greg opened the meeting with a welcome to all Rotarians. He passed on his best wishes on behalf of the Club to Brian Allen who is having an operation to remove the hardware from his leg. The meeting was a business meeting, so updates were given on many issues. 

Rotary Health: Everyone attending were wearing a hat of some description, some rather bizarrre to recognise, to support Rotary Health.  As outlined by Sheryl, October 10th was a major fund raising day and the Club donated $500 to Rotary Health to assist in research especially into youth mental health. Interact has also been involved with their “Are you OK?” day. 

Bus Trip: Craig advised that there are not enough people available for the bus trip propose for 21st Oct and the event will be held over until next year. 

Rotary Christmas Party: The 2021 Christmas Party will now be held on Wednesday 15th December at Jim and Elaine Atkinson home.

DG Visit at Australia Zoo: The DG 2021 visit was held at Australia Zoo with other clubs in our cluster; 11 members and 4 partners attended.

Polio Plus Week: This week in Polio Plus Week with Sunday being World Polio Awareness Day. Mick advised that there had been only two cases of polio recorded this year in the world. Over the life of the project which started in 1998, over 3 billion children have been vaccinated in 122 countries and Rotary has contributed US $2.2B. Jim advised that Maleny Rotary has raised over $1,500 through the polio pig.

TS Centaur: IT has been a difficult year at TS Centaur because Covid 19 restrictions, maintaining the routine functions of the base has been challenging. Des told the members that more adult volunteers are needed to help manager to 22 cadets currently enrolled. 

Mini Guest Speaker: Lionel gave a short presentation on his recent trip to North Queensland and the Savanah country. He was surprised by how well much of the country had responded to recent rain and a little disappointed by his visit to Karumba, after hearing so many tails from others who had visited the town. He advised others to do the trip if they have the opportunity.

Sherryl G will speak to us about “Lift the Lid on Mental Illness” which is Australian Rotary Health’s National annual fundraising day for mental health research. Each year approximately 1-in-5 Australians will experience a mental illness and in order to help future generations of young Australians, we need to look ahead through research and find out how we can prevent this type of illness occurring. As we are also celebrating Hat Day, please wear your most eye-catching hat.

Nomination of Rotary Club of Maleny President Elect for 2021/22:

Historic induction of 2 new members:
A massive welcome again to Renee Harris and Murray Anderson. Many thanks to Bernice McL, Rick V, mentors Roly N and Sherryl G and all the membership team for your hardwork in ensuring everything was in place for a very memorable occasion. We can be assured that our Club and the Maleny and Sunshine Coast hinterland region will be a better place because of their service and fellowship.

Raising Awareness against Domestic Violence:
More thanks to our Rotarians who attended a luncheon meeting with Andrew Powell and Shadow Minister for Domestic Violence and Child Abuse, Amanda Camm.  I understand that Amanda was very interested in the collaborative work we are doing up here. Through Speak Up Now, we have also been invited by the Queensland Domestic Violence Prevention Council to participate at and present to the Sunshine Coast Regional Council in November.  Sherryl G will be attend on behalf of Rotary along with delegates from Zonta and MNC.

Elder Abuse Forum:  
Speak Up Now are currently planning a second Elder Abuse forum to be held on 13th December with a 9am start and all are welcome to attend.  Please let Sherryl G or me know if you would like to come along. Everyone who attended the forum last year found it interesting and helpful.

Kenny Cluster joint meeting for DG Wendy's official visit 17th October 2021:
Thank you to all our members who have attended our joint Kenny Cluster meeting on Sunday morning. This will be the first of such meetings within our new Cluster and also our first visit by DG Wendy in her new role.                   

Mary Cairncross Reserve:
There is an open invitation to celebrate Mary Cairncross Reserve turning 80 with a picnic on 20th October at the picnic ground at the reserve from 10 am to 12 Noon. BYO food and drinks.

Maleny Selectors Green: 
A Maleny Selectors Green Meeting is arranged with Clare Staines, (Principal Landscape Architect from Council's Landscape Design Planning Department onsite on 28th October at 8 am to do the final layout of the interactive landscape design for the childrens’ play area.

Christmas Tree Lights Display at the Uniting Church:
Paulette S, Jim A, Roly N and myself attended with Nancy Baker from the Uniting Church and their Treasurer on 5th October to decide upon a location for our lights display. A site has been selected on the eastern side of the Church building with access to power. Jim A and Roly N are working on a lights budget and lighting plan.

October is End Polio Month:
Keep an eye out for information regarding the Polio Train and or other events to take action on or before World Polio Day on 24 October to promote awareness of Rotary’s polio eradication efforts, raising funds etc in the fight against polio, because as long as polio exists anywhere, it remains a threat everywhere.

District 9260 AGM:
To be held at 9am on 7th November at Phil Boron Centre (Bostock House), Ellerton Drive, Wacol, Qld, 4076. I will be attending for voting purposes but am keen to have other Rotarians attend along with me. 

Joint Rotary Bus Trip:
Craig S has changed the date for this planned trip and electronic scavenger hunt with our sister Glasshouse Club to  21st November because of a date clash with the District AGM. We will be looking for definite numbers by Wednesday night.

There has been a change of venue to Bill and Marlene Hankinson’s home on the Maleny -Landsborough Road on 15th December. 

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 15TH SEPTEMBER
President Greg welcomed members, Partners, new members, a visiting Rotarian and others to a full house meeting.  The highlight of the evening was the induction of two new members carried out by Rick Vickers.  The first was Renee Harris, the owner of Barbers of Maleny who was accompanied by her husband Zach.

The second was Murray Anderson who is a recently retired grazier from Theodore. Both were welcomed into the Club by a standing ovation from those present.

In a surprise move, our guest Val France from Speak Up Now presented a Certificate of Appreciation to Jim Atkinson for his assistance to their organisation.

Although members were delighted to see Chris Brooker returning to our meetings, his resumption of his duties as Sergeant was not so popular.
  

Our Guest Speaker was Dr John Whiteoak, who is a Management Lecturer in Leadership, Strategy and Organisational Behaviour at the University of the Sunshine Coast, and has taught at the Queensland University of Technology, Otago University (in NZ), Griffith University, and Zayed University (in the UAE). His topic was Burnout which is a complex issue.  If it were not, it would have been fixed.  Fairness is one component of Burnout, and it also underpins organisational health.  If we do not feel appreciated, we feel isolated. Burnout is the antithesis of engagement.  It was found that 3 out of 10 workers are engaged in work; 5 out of 10 are not engaged and 2 out of 10 are actively disengaged. In 2019, ‘Official Occupational Syndrome’ was made a ‘Medical’ condition.  COVID has certainly imposed more stress on people, and makes for disconnected workforces.

When looking at the workplace, we have ‘Quality’ and ‘Quantity’.  Quality gives people a good sense of accomplishment.  With Quantity (sales driven) - we can lose the meaning in our work. One very serious and sad note was that 4 workers from Parks & Gardens had committed suicide in the last 18 months.  John stressed that it is important to have the trust of our co-workers, and to have emotional safety.  If you do not feel safe, you do not have a voice. 

John has supported more than 50 organisations with their internal development activities, and is the author of over twenty cultural and management reviews.  He has specialised expertise in developing employee safety and engagement, training interventions in the construction, mining, and manufacturing industries.  In addition, he has developed and delivered practical training for literally hundreds of managers and frontline workers.  He is a respected speaker in these areas.

His talk was accompanied by excellent slides and Fran Tickle gave the vote of thanks.

A LETTER FROM A SERVING SOLDIER

Text of a letter from a kid from Eromanga to Mum and Dad. (For Those of you not in the know, Eromanga is a small town, west of Quilpie in the far south west of Queensland )  

Dear Mum  & Dad,

I  am well. Hope youse are too. Tell me big brothers Doug and Phil that the Army is better than workin' on the station - tell them to get  in bloody quick smart before the jobs are all gone! I wuz a bit slow in settling down at first, because ya don't hafta get outta bed until 6am. But I like sleeping in now, cuz all ya gotta do before brekky is make ya bed and shine ya boots and clean ya uniform. No bloody horses to get in, no calves to feed, no troughs to clean - nothin'!! Ya haz gotta shower though, but it’s not so bad, coz there's lotsa hot water and even a light to see what ya doing!

At brekky ya get cereal, fruit and eggs but there's no kangaroo steaks or goanna stew like wot Mum makes. You don't get fed again until noon and by that time all the city boys are buggered because we've been on a 'route  march' - geez its only just like walking to the windmill in the bullock paddock!!

This one will kill me brothers Doug and Phil with laughter. I keep getting medals for shootin' - dunno why. The bullseye is as big as a  bloody dingo's arse and it don't move and it's not firing back at ya like the Johnsons did when our big scrubber bull got into their prize cows before the Ekka last year! All ya gotta do is make yourself comfortable and hit the target - it's a piece of p...!! You don't even load your own cartridges, they comes in little boxes, and ya don't have to steady yourself against the rollbar of the roo shooting truck when you reload!

Sometimes ya gotta wrestle with the city boys and I gotta be real careful coz they break easy - it's not like fighting with Doug and Phil and Jack and Boori and Steve and Muzza all at once like we do at home after the muster.
Turns out I'm not a bad boxer either and it looks like I'm the best the platoon's got, and I've only been beaten by this one bloke from the Engineers - he's 6 foot 5 and 15 stone and three pick handles across the shoulders and as ya know I'm only 5 foot 7 and eight stone wringin' wet, but I fought him till the other blokes carried me off to the boozer. 

I can't complain about the Army -  tell the boys to get in quick before word gets around how bloody good it is.
