MINUTES OF MEETING OF 21 FEBRUARY 2024
President Paulette welcomed members to this Business Meeting. She announced that she had just received an application for membership from our guest speaker Cougar Lutze, This will be circulated and, if approved, will lead to a lowering of the Club's average age.  Since this meeting, arrangements were made to induct Cougar into the Club on 28 February before his departure to Tanzania.

 

She also reported on her meeting with PP Alan Wilson who has offered his resignation because he is no longer able to make the journey from Bribie Island to attend Club meetings.

Jim A announced that the Club had unfortunately received some other resignations.  Peter McQuoid had moved to WA and Des Crane had relocated away from Maleny.  Sadly Angela Griffin has also retired after having achieved some notable successes both for and with the Club.  The Board will decide how to mark this event.

Sherryl G reported that a film fundraiser, generously hosted by the Maleny Film Society on 10 February with the proceeds of the ticket sales being donated to Speak Up Now, had been a great success. The film shown was Shavda which was confronting and certainly heightened the awareness of domestic violence.

Fran outlined the arrangements that have been made for the RYDA event at Corbould Park.

There was a discussion about organising the catering for the Historical Motorcycle Club's Swap Meet on Saturday 9 March.  Roly is arranging to supply food in the Cricket Pavilion on Friday evening, Saturday morning and lunch.  He will be calling for volunteers to assist with cleaning the pavilion and setting it up for the preparation and serving of meals.

Chris B conducted his regular extortion based on another set of questionable assertions.

 COUGAR LUTZ INDUCTION
P Paulette writes: It was a special ‘out of the box’ gathering on the evening of 28 February as we inducted Cougar Lutze into the Maleny Rotary Club. Most of you have met him and heard him speak either back at our November meeting or early in February when he spoke again.

 I think he must be the youngest member we’ve ever inducted although I’m happy to be corrected about that. Cougar is off to Tanzania next week, so this was the only opportunity we had to hold his induction, as he will not be back on our shores until about October.

It was also a perfect opportunity to have a photo with the youngest and oldest, as well as longest serving Rotary member in our club, John Whan.

 

Re upcoming guest speakers at our meetings, on March 6 we will have Helen and Hannah from Maleny State High School talking to us, I am trying to organise times for a variety of interesting local speakers, including well known artist Peter Hudson, local retail business owners and local musicians. Later in the year, we will definitely have the creators of the musical play, A Girl’s Guide to World War. This has gone from being a local Sunshine Coast production to being performed at The Powerhouse in Brisbane.  It is about to go on a regional tour in Queensland and probably nationally. Aleathea Monsour and Katy Ford live here in Maleny and it will be a pleasure to have them come to one our meetings.

If anyone has any ideas of someone they think would be an interesting guest speaker, please let me know and I will endeavour to arrange it.

PRESIDENT'S NOTES
It has been a very wet past few weeks in the Sunshine Coast hinterland. I hope that all members and their families have remained safe on our roads and missed as many potholes as possible. Our next meeting at the Maleny Hotel is a Project Meeting. Whilst Covid 19 and flu are still about, there is no need to wear masks or to log in with your Qld App. Although we do not have an official guest speaker lined up, we can  look forward to a job talk from Alan Wilson plus reports from our Directors and some good hearted Rotary fellowship.

Your Rotary Ticket to Good Health: Its time again to get your Rotary Ticket to Good Health. Fiona Barthlomew, Practice Manager at our local Maleny Star Discount Chemist, has confirmed that her first order of Rotary Bowelscan Queensland test kits is now available for purchase at $22.

Koala fodder tree project at Spring Pastures Drive Mapleton:  Paulette S and I attended a meeting last Friday at the Nambour offices of the Sunshine Coast Council with Cr David Law, together with Rod Tunstall, Treasurer, RC of Nambour, Rachel Aspinall, Registered Koala Carer,  Jan Lawton, ADG Malouf Cluster and President RC of Woombye/Palmwoods and Bruce Lawton, Treasurer RC of Nambour 76.  There is a  prospective environmental Rotary project to plant an initial 500 eucalypt trees consisting of a variety of species for koala fodder trees on Sunshine Coast Council bush reserve parkland at Spring Pastures Drive, Mapleton.  The trees will be used by local koala carer Rachel Aspinal and other koala carers. We have also attended a joint Rotary Club meeting last Wednesday night with Nambour 76, Nambour and Woombye/Palmwoods to further discuss and advance the proposal with all 3 clubs.  Earlier in the evening we also attended the home of licensed Koala carer Rachel Aspinal to inspect her facilities and met up with 1 year old Ash – a female Koala recovering from Chlamydia and conjunctivitis. 

Maleny Education Support Fund (MESF):   Six applications have been approved so far in 2022 to support students at our local schools. Youth Director Fran T has been very proactive contacting the participating school principals. Fran T and I will be attending a Maleny Apex meeting on 22 May to seek their further support for this project.

Speak Up Now Say No to Domestic and Family Violence: Huge congratulations to Sherryl G and all the team from Speak Up Now who have been very busy planning events and activities during and/or shortly after the Domestic Violence Month of May as evidenced by the SUN calendar for May and June. Events will include the following:

8 May –  Unveiling Red Bench at Montville Uniting Church.

10 May – Maleny Candlelight Ceremony, Tesch Park, Maleny.

22 May – Unveiling Red Bench at Palmwoods Uniting Church.

3 June – Respectful relationships and kite making workshop at River School.

14 June – Adair Donaldson presentation/workshops at Maleny Chamber of Commerce (business), Maleny State School (primary school students), Maleny State High School (high school students) and at Beersheba Living Museum (coaches, managers and sports administrators).

Draft National Plan to end Violence against Women & Children 2022-2023:  Speak Up Now have submitted feedback to the draft plan and are asking that best practice/successful community intervention by community groups such as SUN be included in the plan as an appendix.

Rotary University Sunshine Coast Community Fund:  This meeting was cancelled because of the weather and will be rescheduled. The Scholarship recipients will be:

Centenary of Rotary  $5,000 Charlotte Raven – Animal Ecology                                                        Rotary  $4,500 each   Lisa Musgrave – Biochemistry, Kirsten O'Callorhan – Human Geography, and Lisa Randell -  Biological Science.                                           

Maleny Interact Club:  Our Club has financially supported four registrations and a teacher of our MSHS Interact Club to attend the District 9620 Interact Conference on 15 May at St Aiden's Anglican School, Corinda. 

Rotary Youth Driving Education:   MRC is now proudly part of RYDA Caloundra incorporating Caloundra, Caloundra Pacific, Glasshouse Country and Maleny Rotary Clubs. Our club representative Paulette S will be attending the next meeting at Corbould Park on 25 May from 9.30 am – 11.30 am with other members intending to help with the RYDA program. Our Club will be involved with the MSHS attendance at Corbould Park on 21st July and on another date to be worked out.

Changeover Dinner: Our changeover has been booked for 29 June at the Maleny RSL. 

Maleny Agricultural Show: I have kept our best news to last. The Show is going ahead on 27 and 28 May. It will be a case of all hands on deck. Jim A is arranging the Gate Roster. Roly N in conjunction with Bernice and John McL (before their departure for well-earned holiday) have been circulating  rosters for the Food Stall. Spots are filling quickly. I hope that all members can be involved at some stage during the event. We need up to 10 volunteers at the Food Stall at busy times throughout the Show.  I am hearing on the grapevine that Roly N, Bernice McL and John McL are putting together another great menu for our Rotary Food Stall which has become the annual Maleny Agricultural Show focal point for the best-priced and tastiest steak burger and an array of other delicious burgers, rolls, soups and soft drinks. 

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 4TH MAY

President Greg opened the meeting with the usual formalities before welcoming our Guest Speaker Scott Willis, Principal of Conondale School.  Greg then thanked all the Rotarians who helped out with the parking at Australia Zoo over the holidays. He then highlighted upcoming events:

- 10 May Maleny Candlelight Ceremony, Tesch Park at 5pm, organised by Speak Up Now. 

- 11 May Combined Meeting Rotary and University of the Sunshine Coast Community Fund (RUSCCF).  

- 25 May RYDA Training Day at Corbould Park Caloundra for Rotarians considering participating in the upcoming driver training days for our local Maleny State High School year 10s and other local schools during July.  

- 27 & 28 May Maleny Agricultural Show with Rotary Food Stall and gate duties.

- 3 June  – respectful relationships and kite making workshop at the River School by Speak Up Now. 

Roly N outlined the need for additional volunteers on the Food Stall roster and asked for volunteers to provide both pumpkin and pea and ham soup.

Jim A asked for more volunteers for the gate on the Friday.

There was then a change of tone as Roly proved to be a ruthless stand in Sergeant.

Renee H introduced our Guest Speaker Scott Willis, the Principal of Conondale State School.  Scott Willis became the Principal at Conondale in April 2021. This is a small rural school with 70 pupils spread over 7 grades in an historic building - in contrast, there are 400 students at Maleny State School.  As an aside, Conondale was the favoured location for our Bike Ed teams when that programme was running.

Scott, who after growing up in Mooloolah Valley, chose to go into education and found his niche in small schools. For Conondale, he spoke of his goals of not only helping his pupils but also building relationships with the teachers, the community and the parents. 

Scott also outlined a case where a grant from the Maleny Education Support Fund had made a vital difference for one of his pupils.  He spoke in praise of the Fund and thanked the Club for its creation.  There was a lively question and answer session from an appreciative audience, 

Phillip gave the Vote of Thanks.

1. FROM A MEMBER WHO WISHES TO REMAIN ANONYMOUS

I went fishing one morning, but after a short time I ran out of prawns. Then I saw a redbelly black snake with a frog in his mouth. Frogs are good barramundi bait.     Knowing the snake couldn’t bite me with the frog in his mouth I grabbed him right behind the head, took the frog, and put it in my bait bucket. Now the problem was how to release the snake without getting bitten. So, I grabbed my bottle of Bundy Rum and poured a little in its mouth. Its eyes rolled back, he went limp. I released him into the creek without incident and carried on fishing using the frog.  A little later, I felt a nudge on my foot.  It was that bloody snake with two more frogs. 2.  PRESIDENT'S NOTES
I hope that all members and their families enjoyed a great May Day long weekend. Our meeting next Wednesday is a General  Meeting with no need to wear masks or to log in with your Qld App at the Maleny Hotel. We can all look forward to some good hearted Rotary fellowship and a presentation from Scott Willis, Principal of Conondale State School.

Our Rotary Calendar will be very busy over the next few weeks and right through May 2022. 

- Anzac Day  On behalf of our RC of Maleny, I presented 4 vouchers of $50 each to our local schools – Maleny SHS, Maleny SS, the River School, and Conondale SS at the main Maleny ceremony. 

- 10 May Maleny Candlelight Ceremony, Tesch Park at 5pm. Our Speak Up Now collaboration will be hosting this domestic and family violence and elder abuse event and all members and partners are encouraged to attend to listen to some great speakers.

- 11 May Combined Meeting Rotary and University of the Sunshine Coast Community Fund (RUSCCF). Our Club will be attending the RUSCCF Scholarship Presentations at the University of the Sunshine Coast from 6 pm to 9 pm. It’s a great opportunity to catch up with Rotarians from all over the Sunshine Coast and learn about the world leading research being undertaken by PhD students at the University of the Sunshine Coast. My money is also on Alan W picking up another raffle prize.

- 25 May RYDA Training Day at Corbould Park Caloundra for Rotarians considering participating in one or more of the upcoming driver training days for our local Maleny State High School year 10s and other local schools during July. This project is one of our best and most impactful youth projects. 

- 27 & 28 May Maleny Agricultural Show with Rotary Food Stall and gate duties. Roly N and Jim A are circulating their rosters looking for Rotarian and partner volunteers. We need as many Club members and their partners to participate as possible in one of our main fund raising activities for the year. Roly N is confident that our magnificent steak burgers will be the talk of the Sunshine Coast again this year.

- Rotary Bowelscan Qld will also be manning a stand in the Education Building beneath the Main Pavilion during the Show – much like that at the recent 9620 District Conference at Caloundra - so keep an eye out for it at the Show and for some local publicity about the program through social media, Facebook, GC&MN, SVG and MDSRC News.

- 3 June  – respectful relationships and kite making workshop at the River Schoolby Speak Up Now. Sherryl G, Greg W and Val France will be involved along with teaching staff of the River School.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 20TH APRIL
President Greg opened the meeting with a ‘Welcome to Country’, with Ric T giving the Loyal Toast, and Neil A the Rotary Grace.  Greg then welcomed our Guest speaker for the evening, Jill Lillingstone, and her husband Kelvin. Jared introduced our special guest Sam Hughes, the ‘Travelling Jackeroo’.  We also welcomed Judy Frederiksen, and the partners Gillian Allen, Nancy Baker and Kelly Crane. David Arnot, President of RC of Katoomba, was also an apology due to COVID but a banner from his Club was presented to Greg W. 

Greg then thanked all the Rotarians who helped out with the parking at Australia Zoo over the holidays.

Ric T introduced our surprise Guest, Sam, who thought that Jared was taking him out to dinner, so needless to say it came as a complete surprise when he found himself at the Rotary meeting. Sam was invited to give us a run down on his adventures thus far. 

Sam left Maleny a year and a bit ago.  He eventually arrived in Darwin and has been there for about 6 months, waiting on parts and carrying out repairs on the tractor and the trailer.  He was a little behind schedule, but according to Sam this was because the Rotary calendars slowed him down.  He returned to Maleny when his Dad got sick with COVID, to help out on the farm for a couple of weeks over the Easter break.  He was amazed at how much Maleny had changed in that time.  The new garage did not escape his attention.  Sam did acknowledge that Maleny is a wonderful town to come back to.  So far in his travels he has covered approximately 7,000kms in his beloved tractor, reaching a top speed of 39kph.  Patience is a necessity. His tractor is now fully repaired with a new turbo, and the trailer is almost ready to go again.  Things move slowly in the NT.  Apart from the Northern Territory, the initials NT also mean ‘not today, not tomorrow, and next truck’.  The question was asked……How’s the dog?  Apparently the dog has steak every night for dinner, and in fact when people enquire after Sam, it is usually in the order of – how’s the dog, the bird, the tractor, and how are you?  So far Sam has raised just over $100,000 for his 3 charities.  The Flying Doctors is his primary charity and he has raised over $50,000 for them.  Dolly’s Dream is another of Sam’s passions and he has raised over $40,000 for this very worthy cause.  Sam has a lot of gear……there is the tractor, which has a boat on the roof and a gyrocopter.  The tractor tows the trailer which has a small car and a motor bike, and a plane on the roof.  He goes out to stations and properties in the outback and in remote areas.  Once there he sets up his movie centre at the local Pub, and spends his time sitting down and talking with the farmers about issues of suicide and depression.  This is all about ‘Mental Health Awareness’.  Some chats are short, and some can last for anything up to 5 hours.  Sam is there to listen.  He also goes to schools and talks to the students about bullying, hence Dolly’s Dream.  The southern states and the Politicians still lie ahead for Sam.  At the end of Sam’s talk, our Guest speaker Jill, paid tribute to him.

This was followed by dinner and a very robust fine session.

MALENY SHOW:  Roly updated us on the Show rosters and the need for soup making.

ANZAC DAY:   Chris B advised that all the services would go ahead as normal.  The Dawn service at 4.28, followed by Witta Cemetery, then the Hospital, and lastly the main Service.  Our Maleny hospital is one of the two War Memorial Hospitals, the other being St. Andrew’s in Brisbane.

JOINT MEETING – USC:  This will be held at the Innovation Centre on the 11th May.  Four Scholarships will be awarded.  All recipients are female.  One of the Scholarships is in commemoration of the 100 year Rotary Centenary.  Maleny will be running the bar.  We have 8 members attending  -  Malcolm B, Chris B, Renee H, Paulette S, Greg W, Alan W, Rick V, and Jeff C.

DV WEEK:  Sherryl advised that the Candlelight Ceremony will take place at 5.00p.m. on 10th May in Tesch Park, and following this, food will be served at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre.

Chris B introduced our Guest speaker, Jill Lillingstone, who took us on a fascinating journey through history. Jilll’s grandparents, William and Jessie Lillingstone from London, selected land in North Maleny Road on the 30th June 1887. Her father, Bill, was born in 1900 in Maleny, leaving in 1928 to join the New Guinea Police.  In 1940, as an engineering draftsman on WW2 gun mountings, the Navy sent him to Melbourne. There he would meet the lady who was to become Jill’s mother.  Jill was born in 1943.  

The Lillingstones arrived in Maleny on 3rd October 1886, and in February 1907 William and Jessie took their younger children to Canada.  They returned in 1912.  Dr. Penny Edwards, who lives opposite the Lillingstone land, provided Jill with details and showed her the land that William and Jessie selected in 1887.  The exact spot of their home is still visible, matching her Dad’s old photos.  William Lillingstone was Oxford educated in teaching, book-keeping and articled.  He did the books for several Maleny businesses, was secretary of the Obi Obi Sawmill, and Schoolmaster for over 20 years.  

The first school in the Blackall Range is recorded as ‘Blackall Range State School’ in 1886, later becoming ‘Wootha State School’ which closed in 1914.  There is conflicting information about early schools, as they changed their name, or amalgamated, and also of course the outbreak of World War I in 1914 severely changed the scene.   In 1887 William Lillingstone selected land, and on part of this he built the Maleny Provisional school, which appears to have become the Witta State School in 1895.

Jill has been associated with Rotary from early childhood.  Her Mum’s Uncles were Tasmanian Rotarians from the late 1920’s.  Jill volunteered with Rotary at the Royal Melbourne Show, and continued assisting Rotary for many years.  Jill introduced her daughter to Rotaract in Melbourne.  She was also a leader for Rotary’s Youth Leadership Awards and worked tirelessly to establish the Monash Rotaract Club.  She was inducted as Charter President in 2010, resigning in 2011 to move to Queensland. She won ‘Near North Coast Showgirl’ 2013 representing Maleny, and in 2014 she won ‘Near North Coast’ Rural Ambassador.  Through country shows at this time Jill met Ivan Hankinson.  Their grandparents had adjoining selections in the 1880’s.  Jill has done an enormous amount of research and has gleaned information from far and wide.  It was very insightful and in-depth, and wonderful to hear the diary entries, where people told it how it was.

For the first time in a very long time there is no need to wear masks or to log in with your Qld App at the Maleny Hotel. We can all look forward to some good hearted Rotary fellowship and a presentation by local historian Jill Lillingstone about the early Maleny selectors. It’s a Partners night, but also keep a lookout for and give a warm RC of Maleny welcome to visiting RC of Katoomba President David Arnott and his partner Ruth Achurch. Also our own young Maleny adventurer and fundraiser extraordinaire Sam Hughes, the Travelling Jackaroo, who is on a lightning visit back to Maleny.

 Our Rotary Calendar will be very busy over the next few weeks and right through May 2022. 

1. Our Australia Zoo Parking team are finishing their duties this morning. I want to pass on my sincere thanks for their volunteer work over the Easter School holidays. Australia Zoo has been very busy over the past few days and several of us have needed to rest our feet after busy sessions at the Zoo. 

2. Anzac Day 25 April. On behalf of our RC of Maleny, I will be presenting 4 vouchers of $50 each to our local schools – Maleny SHS, Maleny SS, the River School and Conondale SS at the main Maleny ceremony. I encourage as many members as possible to participate in and/or attend one or more of our local marches and ceremonial services. 

3. 10 May. Maleny Candlelight Ceremony, Tesch Park at 5pm. Our Speak Up Now collaboration will be hosting this domestic and family violence and elder abuse event and all members and partners are encouraged to attend to listen to some great speakers.

4. 11 May. Combined Meeting Rotary and University of the Sunshine Coast Community Fund (RUSCCF). Our Club will be attending the RUSCCF Scholarship Presentations at the University of the Sunshine Coast from 6 pm to 9 pm. It’s a great opportunity to catch up with Rotarians from all over the Sunshine Coast and learn about the world leading research being undertaken by PHD students that University. My money is also on Alan W picking up another raffle prize.

5. 25 May. RYDA Training Day at Corbould Park Caloundra. For Rotarians considering participating in one or more of the upcoming driver training days for our local Maleny SHS year 10s and other local schools during July 2022. This project is one of our best and most impactful youth projects. 

6. 27 and  28May. Maleny Agricultural Show – RC Maleny Rotary Food Stall and gate duties /parking. Roly N and Chris B will have their rosters ready for Rotarian and partner volunteers. We need as many Club members and their partners as possible to participate in one of our main fund raising activities for the year. Roly N is confident that our magnificent steak burgers will be the talk of the Sunshine Coast again this year.

7. Rotary BowelScan Qld will also be manning a stand in the Education Building beneath the Main Pavilion during the Maleny Agricultural Show– much like that at the recent 9620 District Conference at Caloundra - so keep an eye out for it at the Show and for some local publicity about the program through social media, facebook, GC&MN, SVG and MDSRC News.

8. 3 June. River School are holding a respectful relationships and kite making workshop run by Speak Up Now. Sherryl G, Greg W and Val France will be involved along with teaching staff of the River School.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 6TH APRIL
President Greg opened the meeting with the usual formalities with Mike G giving the Loyal Toast and Renee the Rotary Grace.
Greg briefed us on the District Conference and thanked those members who attended.
Roly asked for volunteers to assist with parking at the Maleny Golf Club on 13th April 0700 – 0830.
Paulette briefed us on the 2022 Combined Rotary & University of Sunshine Coast meeting on 11th May; Chris B will organise the bar and nominated a team of ‘so called volunteers’.
Roly confirmed that the 2022 Maleny Show is ON and the Club will be running the usual Food Stall all day Friday and Saturday 27th & 28th May. Many volunteers will be required.
Jim confirmed that, as tradition demands, Maleny Rotary will man the main entry gate for the show on 27th from 0600 to late evening. Again many volunteers required.
Sherryl briefed us on activity with the Domestic Violence group and the availability of promotional cards.
Fran covered recent Maleny High School Interact activities.
Following the meal Sergeant Chris then entertained members with ridiculous fines. All were received with the usual good humour.

Keith, as the Duty Officer, introduced the guest speaker with a brief introductory bio. Dr Adrian McCallum is a Senior Lecturer in Geotechnical Engineering at USC with great ‘hands on’ experience in remote area science and engineering.

Adrian explained that he had an early age ambition to be a polar explorer and at the Brisbane Expo 88 he met Tim MacCartney-Snape, the first Australian to summit on Mt Everest. Inspired, Adrian then wrote to Sir Ranulph Fiennes and asked how he could achieve his ambition. Refer http://www.ranulphfiennes.co.uk/
Adrian has the rare distinction of having served in the Australian Air Force, Army and Navy. He became a Navy meteorologist and climbed Mt Everest as part of a Navy team in 2001.  Three Australians died on Mt Everest at that time and this led to Adrian’s interest and expertise in oceanography and in particular  the behaviour of ice/snow in order to predict avalanches.
Adrian presented some fascinating photos and short videos of life on Antarctica and within the Artic Circle.
A wonderful 30+minute presentation to a rapt audience.

A BAGPIPER'S LAMENT?

As a bagpiper, I play many gigs. Recently I was asked by a funeral director to play at a graveside service for a homeless man. He had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a pauper's cemetery in the bush. As I was not familiar with that area, I got lost and, being a typical man, I didn't stop for directions.

I finally arrived an hour late and saw the funeral guy had evidently gone and the hearse was nowhere in sight. There were only the diggers and crew left and they were eating lunch. I felt badly and apologized to the men for being late.

I went to the side of the grave and looked down and the vault lid was already in place. I didn't know what else to do, so I started to play.

The workers put down their lunches and began to gather around. I played out my heart and soul for this man with no family and friends. I played like I've never played before for this homeless man.

And as I played "Amazing Grace", the workers began to weep. They wept, I wept, we all wept together. When I finished, I packed up my bagpipes and started for my car.

Though my head was hung low, my heart was full.

As I opened the door to my car, I heard one of the workers say, "I never seen anything like that before, and I've been putting in septic tanks for twenty years."

- District 9620 Conference in Caloundra 18, 19 and 20 March 2022
It was my pleasure and privilege to attend the inaugural District 9620 Conference recently at Caloundra with fellow members John and Bernice McL, Sherryl G, Paulette S, John W and Craig S. I have enclosed a photo shared by Sherryl G of a few of us at our Rotary Club of Maleny House of Friendship stand on 19 March proudly displaying our Speak Up Now Stop Domestic and Family Violence and Maleny Selectors Green projects. Our stand was very well manned by our  members who fielded many inquiries regarding our activities throughout the conference. Many thanks to Bernice and John McL, whose experience and ingenuity in setting up displays was greatly appreciated, for assistance from Sherryl G with the provision of the interesting material for Speak Up Now and Craig S for donating many bottles of water for us to hand out along with our other promotional materials. The Rotary Club of Caloundra is to be commended on an inspirational conference. The next District Conference in 2023 will be held in Brisbane. The conference was a fantastic opportunity to network and catch up with fellow Rotarians throughout our expanded new district.

And many congratulations to John Whan who has clocked up over 50 years of service as a hard working Rotarian including service as an AG.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 16TH MARCH
President Greg welcomed members and Guest Speakers Tim Bagshaw and Donna Hayes.  After dinner, Tim and Donna gave the members an excellent update on the current progress of the Maleny Hydrotherapy Project to fulfil their  VISION: "To progress the health and fitness of the local community through hydrotherapy" and to achieve their MISSION: "To build and operate a highly successful Hydrotherapy Centre".

Their current focus is on:
1. Completing the Business Case
2. Preparing Plans
3. Documenting Costings
4. Obtaining Consent from MDSRC as head leaseholder to gain Owners consent from Sunshine Coast Council. MHI have recently signed a Provisional Sublease with MDSRC and, as they put it, "they are now shovel ready!"

Their market was presented in a slide "Who uses a hydrotherapy centre?

All age groups:
  1.   Babies – learning to swim
  2.   Teenagers – training and sports injury recovery
  3.   Adults – rehabilitation and fitness
  4.   Mature aged – rehabilitation and fitness
  5.   Anyone in between – rehabilitation and fitness

ANOSOGNOSIA
What is that you may well ask?
Check out the information below. It is interesting. The one item that jumped out at me is the percent of people in the world who live to be over 65!  Read below for all the details.
Earth's Population Statistics in Perspective
The population of Earth is around 7.8 billion.
For most people, it is a large figure.   However, if you condensed 7.8 billion into 100 persons, and then into various percentage statistics the resulting analysis is relatively much easier to comprehend.
Out of 100:
11 are in Europe, 5 are in North America, 9 are in South America, 15 are in Africa, 60 are in Asia.

49 live in the countryside, 51 live in cities, 75 have mobile phones so 25 do not. 30 have internet access so 70 do not have the availability to go online, 7 received university education so 93 did not attend college. 83 can read 17 are illiterate. 33 are Christians 22 are Muslims 14 are Hindus 7 are Buddhists 12 are other religions, 12 have no religious beliefs. 26 live less than 14 years, 66 died between 15 - 64 years of age, so 8 are over 65 years old.

If you have your own home, eat full meals and drink clean water, have a mobile phone, can surf the internet, and have gone to college, you are in the miniscule, privileged lot. (in the less than 7% category). Amongst 100 persons in the world, only 8 live or exceed the age of 65! If you are over 65 years old, be content & grateful. Cherish life, grasp the moment.
If you did not leave this world before the age of 64 like the 92 persons who have gone before you, you are already the blessed amongst mankind.
Take good care of your own health. Cherish every remaining moment. If you think you are suffering memory loss.......

Anosognosia, very interesting...
In the following analysis the French Professor Bruno Dubois, Director of the Institute of Memory and Alzheimer's Disease (IMMA) at La Pitié-Salpêtrière - Paris Hospitals, addresses the subject in a rather reassuring way:
"If anyone is aware of their memory problems, they do not have Alzheimer's."
• forget the names of families.
• do not remember where I put some things.
It often happens in people 60 years and older that they complain that they lack memory. "The information is always in the brain, it is the "processor" that is lacking."
This is "Anosognosia" or temporary forgetfulness.
Half of people 60 and older have some symptoms that are due to age rather than disease. The most common cases are:
- forgetting the name of a person,
- going to a room in the house and not remembering why we were going there,
- a blank memory for a movie title or actor, an actress,
- a waste of time searching where we left our glasses or keys ... (I can identify with that!)
After 60 years most people have such a difficulty, which indicates that it is not a disease but rather a characteristic due to the passage of years ...
Many people are concerned about these oversights hence the importance of the following statements:
1."Those who are conscious of being forgetful have no serious problem of memory."
;2. "Those who suffer from a memory illness or Alzheimer's, are not aware of what is happening."
Professor Bruno Dubois, Director of IMMA, reassures the majority of people concerned about their oversights:
"The more we complain about memory loss, the less likely we are to suffer from memory sickness."

Our next meeting at the Maleny Hotel on 2 March is a General Meeting. My understanding is that the easing of restrictions to mask wearing in Queensland for places such as hotels will not take place until 6pm 4 March.
We can all look forward to an evening of strong fellowship and a challenging presentation from our guest speaker Nerilee Sowter of Destiny Rescue in relation to the rescue of children from sexual trafficking, prostitution, slavery and human exploitation.

- District 9620 Conference in Caloundra 18, 19 and 20 March
My understanding from the Conference website is that registrations are still open for each session of the Conference including the Gala Dinner on Saturday night. But time is running out. Members may have to wait for several years for another conference in our local area given the expansion of the new District. I hope as many of our members as possible can join with me in attending one or more sessions to celebrate the coming together of two great Districts and get to know your fellow Rotarians in a relaxed atmosphere. I have also forwarded a request for a booking of a static wall display space in the House of Friendship  and am currently awaiting confirmation. We are hoping to prepare a  display with an emphasis on our Speak Up Now Project, Maleny Selectors Green and other projects.

This program will now be held in July at a date to be confirmed.

- Maleny Selectors Green
Just a reminder that Jeff Cornfoot has placed a call out to members for assistance to remove kikuyu and cobblers pegs from our native gardens on Maleny Selectors Green on 3 March, weather permitting, from 7.30 am. Any questions to Jeff on 0448830030. We can also expect some assistance from David Coffey and a couple more local Lions members.

It is with great pleasure that I note that the Club unanimously appointed Renee Harris as our club photographer with Rick Vickers as her deputy at our last meeting. Looking forward to viewing some of Renee’s handiwork after our next meeting.

- And a Spring Date Claimer for 2 September for all members of the Club.
Roly Nieper has been prudently working with his Rotary team and Stephen Porter of the Maleny Golf Club and has booked the Maleny Golf Course for the Inaugural Annual Rotary Club of Maleny Golf Day on Friday 2 September. Further details of this active, fun and healthy event will be made available in the coming months.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 2ND FEBRUARY
President Greg opened this Business Meeting by welcoming the members present. He noted that the dates for the District Conference ,to be held in Caloundra from 18 to 20 March, were fast approaching.

Sherryl G reported that Angela and CL are stepping down from administering the Maleny Education Fund. Relacements will be appointed. The Fund has a balance of $4,000 and more community donations will be required. It fills a very useful and discreet role.

Speak Up Now - Plenty of safety cards left over to hand out.

Domestic Violence Prevention Month will be held in May.

Rotary Australia Health celebrates its 40th anniversary. Millions of dollars have been raised since its inception.

Rick V reported that it had been a difficult year both for the Club and Rotary International because of Covid 19. This has severely limited our ability to raise funds for selected and new projects. Never the less funds were donated to traditional recipients such as Shelter Box, Polio Plus and others.

Roly N announced that the Club intended to sponsor an initial Golf Day at the Maleny Golf Club on 2 September. A committee of Greg, Craig, Lionel, Jeff and Jim has been formed.  They will be looking for volunteers to assist on the actual day which will require a total Club involvement.

Jeff Cornfoot gave an update on the Maleny Selectors Green project. Volunteers will soon be required to do some weeding of the garden beds.

Paulette S said that a grant application was being made to pay for koala friendly trees to assist a Mapleton group.

Craig S announced that he was looking at Australia Zoo or the new Fire Station as possible locations for vocational visits.

President Greg Williams reported that the Sunshine Coast Council have requested expressions of interest for a steering committee to look at the conversion of 65 acres of donated land at the rear of  Mary Cairncross Park to an Environmental Park, to enhance the total area and to support it as a major draw card for the hinterland region.

EVEN CIVIL SERVANTS HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOUR

Lt. Colonel Robert Maclaren retired from the British Army in 2001 after a long fulfilling career. On the day that he retired, he received a letter from the Personnel Department of the Ministry of Defence setting out details of his pension and, in particular, the tax-free ‘lump sum’ award, (based upon completed years of service), that he would receive in addition to his monthly pension.

The letter read:

“Dear Lt. Colonel Maclaren,
We write to confirm that you retired from the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards on 1st March 2001 at the rank of Lt Colonel, having been commissioned into the British Army at Edinburgh Castle as a 2nd Lieutenant on 1st February 1366. Accordingly your lump sum payment, based on years served, has been calculated as £68,500. You will receive a cheque for this amount in due course.

Yours sincerely,

Army Paymaster”

Lt.Colonel Maclaren replied;

“Dear Paymaster,
Thank you for your recent letter confirming that I served as an officer in the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards between 1st February 1366 and 1st March 2001 – a total period of 635 years and 1 month. I note however that you have calculated my lump sum to be £68,500. This seems to be considerably less than it should be bearing in mind my length of service since I received my commission from King Edward III.

By my calculation, allowing for interest payments and currency fluctuations, my lump sum should actually be £6,427,586,619.47p.

I look forward to receiving a cheque for this amount in due course.

A month passed by and then in early April, a stout manilla envelope from the Ministry of Defence in Edinburgh dropped through Col Maclaren’s letter box, it read:

“Dear Lt Colonel Maclaren,

We have reviewed the circumstances of your case as outlined in your recent letter to us dated 8th March inst. We do indeed confirm that you were commissioned into the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards by King Edward III at Edinburgh Castle on 1st February 1366, and that you served continuously for the following 635 years and 1 month. We have re-calculated your pension and have pleasure in confirming that the lump sum payment due to you is indeed £6,427,586,619.47p.

However, we also note that according to our records you are the only surviving officer who had command responsibility during the following campaigns and battles; The Wars of the Roses 1455 -1485 (Including the battles of Bosworth Field, Barnet and Towton), The Civil War 1642 -1651 (Including the battles Edge Hill, Naseby and the conquest of Ireland), The Napoleonic War 1803 – 1815 (including the battle of Waterloo and the Peninsular War), The Crimean War (1853 – 1856) (including the battle of Sevastopol and the Charge of the Light Brigade), The Boer War (1899 -1902).

We would therefore wish to know what happened to the following, which do not appear to have been returned to Stores by you on completion of operations:

9765 Cannon

26,785 Swords

12,889 Pikes

127,345 Rifles (with bayonets)

28,987 horses (fully kitted)

Plus three complete marching bands with instruments and banners.

We have calculated the total cost of these items and they amount to £6,427,518,119.47p. We have therefore subtracted this sum from your lump sum, leaving a residual amount of £68,500, for which you will receive a cheque in due course.

Yours sincerely . . . .”
