PRESIDENT'S NOTES
I’m sure all members of Rotary feel the same as I do when they are away somewhere and come across a Rotary symbol on a chair, or in a playground, or on a Men’s Shed or the like. It’s not just the feeling of pride that Rotary is doing good service work in this town, but also that they are advertising it. When we were over in Western Australia earlier in the year, we stayed at Carnarvon a couple of days, and as we entered the town from the south, we were struck by this huge Rotary badge on a water tower. We thought “Rotary sure thinks big in this town”.

 Similarly, I feel proud to belong to Rotary when in Maleny and I see a Rotary symbol acknowledging a project or a donation that has made a difference around the town. One such time recently was when I went into the chemist and saw the Battery Disposal bin above the counter. This was the brainchild of Rick T and I acknowledge the work and research he put into getting this project up and running. Being a grandmother, I am always conscious about the disposal of button batteries and now we have a safe depository on our doorstep. Thanks Rick.

I had positive feedback from our first Business format meeting last week and hope that we are all now more informed about current projects and upcoming events.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 7TH AUGUST

President Sherryl opened the meeting with an explanation of the meeting format.  A Special AGM was then convened with Jim A in the chair at which Greg W was elected unopposed to the position of President Elect for 2020/21.  A ‘show and tell’ was conducted by Rick T where he conducted a survey on ways to advertise homelessness to best effect followed by a guess what this is – it turned out to be a cartridge from WW1 that had been very cleverly turned into a pocket knife.  So far we have had a sword, a bayonet, and now a knife – what is it about blades? 

CL C (International Director) took the floor and explained in detail the Maleny Education Support Fund initially set up by us and the MCU (but now also supported by APEX and Lions) after consultation with MSHS, MSS, River School, and Independent School.  Applications are anonymous and already the first years funding has been expended so the need is very real.  Funds are held by the Neighbourhood Centre.

Jim A reported on the progress towards our 60th Birthday celebrations to be held at the RSL on 23 October – our charter dinner was held there in October 1959.  David Wilson, the only surviving charter member, will be the guest speaker assisted by our Historian, Jack Wilcox.  There will be a slide show and static displays.

Ric V (Community Director) reported that eight park benches had been delivered, five for MCSR and three for Settlers Green with the assistance of a $2,000 grant from SCC.  So far Malcolm B and his team have successfully installed three at MCSR and are awaiting a decision from Council as to where the other two are to be located.  They are made of aluminium and reconstituted wood, appropriate plaques are being made, and should be vandal proof.  The old seats have been recycled.  The cairn at the front explaining our involvement with the creation of the reserve as our very first community project will be refurbished.  Plans are in hand to enclose the BBQ area at the rear of our food stall at the showground after consultation with the Showground User Group.  The interim reports on the last round of community grants are complete and the 2020 calendars are now ready for sale.

Greg W (Vocational Director) updated us with the progress on Settlers Green, a MDSR sign with our logo on it had been erected, and APEX has undertaken to install the three seats under our direction.  Lions are keeping it mowed and Friends of Pattemore House are applying for grants (with our support) to make and erect history panels.  The Garden Club is going to plant heritage plants that may be in danger of extinction in their natural habitat.  The vocational visit to the Neighbourhood Centre last month was a great success and planning has started for one in October to the Memorial Hospital to coincide with Australian Rotary Health Hat Day.  Vocational Awards will be on the agenda this year and members are encouraged to contact Greg W with nominations.

CL C rounded out the meeting with an update on Ebenezer and Shed the Light, Nepal which had both achieved satisfactory sustainability and she would be visiting the latter in November with a view to expansion.

President Sherryl thanked all participants and urged members to give her some feedback on this new meeting format – she then closed the meeting.

3. The Chinese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than the English.

4. The Italians drink a lot of red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than the English.

5. The Germans drink a lot of beer and eat lots of sausages and fats and suffer fewer heart attacks than the English.

CONCLUSION

Eat and drink what you like.

Speaking English is apparently what kills you.

 

Rotary Club of Maleny, a President's Update

Been an interesting week. I had the pleasure of delivering cheques to two local groups and a thank you certificate to a local supporter.

President Ric hands over a cheque to Cath Ovenden Manager of the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre to become a "Not For Profit Major Sponsor"

Geoff Habel Headmaster of The Montville State School accepts a donation on behalf of the "SA Kitchen Garden Project"

President Ric also had the pleasure of delivering a certificate of appreciation to Peter Brettell of Wild Rocket @ Misty's in Montville. They ran a Melbourne Cup Calcutta with the profits going to Rotary to support local charities. Not only great food, charitable as well.

It was also noted at this weeks sausage sizzle many people came up just to make a cash donation to the club, which of course was greatly appreciated. All in all a very good week.
