PRESIDENT'S NOTES
October is a bumper month, not just for our Club, but for the wider world of Rotary.

October is Mental Health Month. 1 in 5 Australians suffer a mental illness every year, and nearly half of the population (45%) will experience a mental illness at some stage in their lives. Mental illnesses are the third leading cause of disability burden in Australia. Lift the Lid on Mental Illness is Australian Rotary Health’s (ARH) national fundraising and awareness campaign for mental health research, and we as a Club are getting involved this year. We have launched our campaign with a $500 Club donation to ARH, and donned hats at the board meeting last night.

We will dedicate part of our dinner meeting on Wednesday 16th October to Rotary Hat Day, so please join in the fun that night and wear a hat (the brighter/funnier the better) so we can Lift the Lid on Mental Illness with Australian Rotary Health. Reminder: this Wednesday’s meeting at the hotel will start 30 minutes earlier than usual.

October is also designated on the Rotary International calendar for Polio Awareness, with World Polio Day on Thursday 24 October. On that day, across the entire SE Queensland train network, is a Train Ride to End Polio event. The Polio train will roll through Landsborough Station at 7.27am on that day. We are planning to have some members at the station to raise awareness of Rotary’s End Polio campaign, and to support the Rotary train travellers. The Club has already donated $1500 in July to the Polio fundraising campaign. If you would like to join us at the station let me know. Red End Polio Now shirts will be available at Wednesday’s meeting.

The other big event this month is our 60th anniversary celebration on Wednesday 23 October at the RSL. Planning is well underway for this event.

MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF 2ND OCTOBER
President Sherryl welcomed all including recent travellers to NW Australia Bernice and John, Roly and Jim. Also welcomed our guest speakers Ryan and Richard from USC and visiting Rotarian Tim Pyne all the way from Kirkcudbright in Scotland. Also welcomed was Melva Elvi as Bernice’s guest.

Members were reminded by Greg W of the Vocational visit to the Maleny Hospital on the fifth Wednesday of the month – Wed 30 October. 4pm start for a tour of the hospital, moving to the hotel at 5.30 for 6pm  meal and talk by hospital administrator, and auxiliary representative.

Tim Pyne informed us of some of the projects of his club of 60 or so members. Kirkcudbright is a fishing village which sits at the mouth of the River Dee on its way to the Irish Sea.

Dinner done, Chris B slugged all more than the new Qld car rego increase with fines based on outrageous facts of thinly veiled truths.

Bernice won the blind raffle.

Then Richard Wilson and Ryan McNelly-Smith, two 3rd year town planning students from USC took us through their community survey on attitudes to Rotary. An excellent presentation looking at assumptions, objectives, methods of surveying and some conclusions and recommendations. A general observation was that 60% of Australians were not interested in a commitment to a professional group or community organisation . We shouldn’t be surprised.

Three main recommendations were made:
• More flexible membership options for time-sensitive persons.
• Diversify projects to more directly impact the age demographic we are looking to attract.
• Rectify current general misconceptions about Rotary, such as the sexist nature of clubs, by participating in events which promote inclusion of minority groups and diversity.

The PowerPoint slides and their full report has been emailed to members. The Board is to discuss the recommendations and present some ideas to members. Melinda Martin gave the vote of thanks.

After a few more announcements from Jim, Michael and Greg, a healthy and typically noisy meeting concluded.

The meeting closed at 8:30pm.

SENIOR'S LOGIC
A SOBERING TALE?

I went to the liquor store  Monday  afternoon on my bicycle, bought a bottle of Johnny Walker Black and put it in the bicycle basket.

As I was about to leave, I thought to myself that if I fell off the bicycle, the bottle would break. So I drank all the Johnny Walker before I cycled home.

It turned out to be a very  good decision,  because I fell off my bicycle seven times on the way home.

MEETING OF 18TH JUNE
President Alan began by welcoming all members and introducing visiting Rotarian Nev and his wife from Stanthorpe and a potential new member Paulette Steele.

He then provided details of the proposed program, including assigning tasks to members, for the Changeover dinner at the Orangery Restaurant on Wednesday 27 June.

To test the knowledge of members on Rotary, President Alan asked a series of questions on Rotary firsts – as to whether members passed the test was open to conjecture although, it must be pointed out, a number of questions were rather difficult:- for example, where was the first Rotary club in a non-English speaking country?

Chris B advised members that whilst the number of volunteers he had for Muscle on the Mountain on 1 July would probably enough, he would like additional help if possible.  He then, as per usual, provided the light entertainment for everyone with his sergeant’s session. Fines were meted out to all and sundry for any misdemeanor, misdeed, wrongdoing, faux pas, lapse, slip or sin or for anything really – real or imagined.

After dinner, Melinda M introduced the guest speaker Gordon Ferguson who spoke about Scottish bagpipes. In his address Gordon spoke about his life-time involvement with the bagpipes stretching over fifty years during which time:
- he played in many countries including Canada, Russia and France;
- as part of the Muirhead & Sons Pipe Band won five consecutive world championships between 1965 and 1969;
- played at two Edinburgh Military Tattoos and for the Queen at a private function.

Gordon related how he went from humble beginnings near Glasgow to his time in the 214th Boys Brigade Company, his successful undertaking college study in management accounting, his time as a practicing accountant and of his emigration to Australia, whilst from an early age maintaining his passion for playing the bagpipes – except for the time he was helping to raise his young family.

Since moving to Queensland, Gordon has played with the Queensland Irish Pipe Band and the Queensland Highlanders Pipe Band and in recent years has been a full-time member of the Queensland Police Pipes & Drums and travelled with them to play at the prestigious 2006 Edinburgh Military Tattoo; he now offers his ervices by way of playing at private functions and providing tuition.

Gordon finished his address by playing a short medley of tunes. Phillip S gave the vote of thanks.

AND NOW FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT
HOW THE OTHER HALF LIVES?

Siamese twins walk into a pub in Sydney and park themselves on a bar stool.

One of them says to  the bartender

"Don't mind us, we're  joined at the hip. I'm John, he's Jim. We'll have two VB's, thanks."

The bartender, feeling slightly awkward, tries to make polite conversation while pouring the beers.

"Been on holiday  recently, lads?"

"Off to the States  next month," says John. "We go to the States every year, hire a car and drive for miles, don't we, Jim?"

Jim agrees.

"Ah, The States!" says the bartender. "Wonderful country ...... the climate, the beer,  the culture .. .. ..."

"Nah, we don't like that American crap," says John. "Pies, peas and VB, that's us, hey, Jim?  And we  can't stand the Yanks; not civil and polite like us

Aussies."

"So why keep going to  the States?" asks the bartender.

"It's the only chance Jim gets to drive.”

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 21ST FEBRUARY
A well attended meeting with five guests - Gail Denver (MDSRC), Winston Johnston (Lions Blackall Range), Colin Sandford (Lions Blackall Range), and Rotary partners Leon and Mike.

Following the usual formalities President Alan held a Rotary new member induction ceremony for Laurelle Owen. He was assisted by Bernice.  Following the ceremony all members rose and formally welcomed Laurelle to the Club.

President Alan briefed the meeting on the make up of Club committees and confirmed that the 2018/19 Board Changeover dinner will be on the 27th June at The Orangery. As usual Alan promised some form of entertainment on the evening but would not elaborate. Alan also asked members to consider if they could nominate anyone to attend the next RYLA camp.

Rick V attended a community ‘morning tea’ hosted by the Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace. Rick  had the opportunity to discuss the project for shade cloth over the netball courts at the Maleny High School. The Club has received a Federal Government grant of $19,000 for the project but this is way short of the $360,000 quoted by the Qld Government works department. There will be further meetings on this issue.

Jeff asked the members to consider options for the Melbourne Cup lunch fundraiser and hoped that more members would become involved. Jim commented that the 3 Melbourne Cup lunches that we have held raised over $18,000.

Gail Denver spoke about the MDSRC Awards dinner on Saturday 24th March at The Orangery. They have an excellent guest speaker in Dr Adrian McCallum from USC.To get an idea of what Dr McCallum may talk about at the dinner I suggest you google his name.

The raffle was won by Peter McGuirck. The Sergeant Chris again dreamt up some outlandish tales to fine members and guests.

Visitors Gail, Winston and member Greg then combined to give us an interesting and informative overview of a proposal for a community park to be established by a joint project involving Rotary, Lions, Apex and the MDSRC. The location would be on Parkland Drive next to the Light Horse Parade ground. The proposal is for a Memorial Walk commemorating the ‘pioneer women’ of the Maleny District, barbecues, a playground and toilet facilities. A possible name would be the Memorial & Pioneer Community Park.

The suggestion is that a joint committee with representatives from the 4 groups be formed to get this started. It was noted that the proposed park would be on the MDSRC leased part of the Maleny Precinct land.

Greg thanked Gail, Winston and Colin. Jeff presented all 3 guests with a Rotary Maleny Platypus shopping bag and a copy each of Maleny’s best calendar.

President Alan thanked all for attending and closed the meeting.

ALLEVIATION OF MALNUTRITION PROJECT IN PNG - PROGRESS REPORT
FROM RUSS STEVENSON

This progress report is being sent because your Club expressed interest in the project and pledged funds towards a Global Grant to implement it. I have been focused primarily on awareness within D9600 and fundraising over the past 12 months or so. It is a long time since I spoke to your Club, hence the need to update you on progress.
The Budget
The aim was to provide funding of US$50,000 for the project. Unfortunately, I have fallen short of this goal but there may be a couple of late contributions to help out.
So far, we have a total of US$37,865 from $20,000AUD contributed by Rotary Clubs (Nambour $10,000, Gympie $5,000, Nundah $3,000 and Maleny $2,000). This becomes $30,000 when matched by D9600 DDF and $37,850 US  when TRF funding is added. This total is $12,150 under budget for the project.
An extra $5,000 AUD would bring us up to just over $50,000 USD. With some luck we might get closer to our budget goal before the proposal is actually submitted in a few weeks time.
Work undertaken to date:
  • I have undertaken extensive research in the planning of this project, including seeking advice from a variety of technical experts.
  • Scoping study undertaken by in Feb – March 2017.
  • Draft booklet with illustrations, daily diet chart and workshop manual  created.
Work to be done:
  • Global Grant request to be submitted to the Rotary Foundation in March 2018.
  • The Train the Trainer workshops for volunteer trainers from 10 representative village groupings (ca 30 trainees) will be held at Mougulu in June 2018.
 The Process for fund donors:
  • After TRF have considered the project and approved it (a ca 1 month process ), they will notify me to inform me that the project will be supported by TRF.
  • TRF will advise me to set up a special bank account for the project
  • Monies to be matched by TRF must then be deposited in that account. No funding can be provided by TRF until all cash contributions are deposited. Presumably, the same conditions apply for funds from D9600 DDF.
  • As soon as I receive confirmation that TRF will support this project, I will notify those Rotary Clubs who have pledged funds to support the project of this and ask their Treasurers to deposit pledged funds into the project account. I hope this will be completed by mid May at the latest to give you an idea of a possible time frame.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 7TH FEBRUARY
President Alan opened the meeting by welcoming a full house of members, partners, guest speaker and other guests including PP Tom Malone.

There was a special moment with the induction of Peter McGuirk as a new member. Peter was greeted by all members and will have David Fraser as a mentor.

President Alan then reported that: - the visit to RainForest Liqueurs had been much enjoyed by all participants.
- he would like the Club to enter a team for a ROMAC Trivia Competiiton in Caloundra on 1st March.
- the District Conference starts on 22nd April.
- he has arranged for the Club's office bearers to be recorded in the bulletin.

Jim A said that some dues were outstanding.

Rick V spoke about the upcoming cross country Championships at the Golf Club at which we are committed to parking duties:
- 5th May Sunshine Coast Regional
- 4th August Queensland State
- 25th August Australian National.  This will be a big one!

CL reported that the Club's $250 had been reinvested in KIVA projects.  She explained how KIVA worked.

Chris B said that the Interact Club had from 14 to 20 attendees at their meetings.  They had helped to organise the games at the Aussie Day Expo.

Bernice reported that the 24 February deadline for community grants was approaching.

The Sergeant was then let loose on an unsuspecting and unwitting audience.

Our Guest Speaker Desley Malone was introduced by Ric T, who in one of his many incarnations, was a former President of the Histoical Society. Desley began by outlining the successful relocation of the Glenferna farm house to Bryce Lane. The refurbishment of the building continues and it will be used to house many of the society's records and artifacts.

She then gave a detailed history of the opening up of the local area with details of the original selectors.  The selectors had to reside, clear and fence their properties and provide a living. With maps and photographs she showed how inaccessible the land was and the difficulties that these first settlers
faced. The timber getters were the real pioneers who opened up the country.  As land was cleared, dairy farming began and the township began to be settled.

There were pictures of the hotel (1907), the bridging of the Obi and bullock carts (with Bill's grandfather) going through the town.

This was a professionally presented and very informative talk which deserves more time and a wider audience.  Keith gave the vote of thanks.

AND NOW FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT
ONE FOR THE ETYMOLOGISTS AMONGST US

AN AMAZING 2-LETTER ENGLISH WORD

PARDON THE PUN---BUT ARE YOU---‘UP’---FOR A GIGGLE

A reminder that one word in the English language that can be a noun, verb, adjective, adverb and preposition:

UP

This two-letter word in English has more meanings than any other two-letter word.  It is listed in the dictionary as an [adv.], [prep.], [adj.], [n] or [v].

It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP?

At a meeting, why does a topic come UP?  Why do we speak UP, and why are the  officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a  report?  We call UP our friends, brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver, warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen.  We lock UP the house and fix UP the old car.

At other times, this little word has real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses.

To be dressed is one thing, but to be dressed UP is special.

And this UP is confusing:  a drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP.

We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night. We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP!

To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look UP the word UP in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4 of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions.

If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used.  It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more.

When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP.  When the sun comes out, we say it is clearing UP.  When it rains, the earth soaks it UP.  When it does not rain for awhile, things dry UP.  One could go on and on, but I'll wrap it UP, for now . . . My time is UP!

Oh .. . . One more thing:  What are the first thing you do in the morning and the last thing you do at night?
U
P  !

Now I'll shut UP!

• Alan W. was congratulated on finally getting the container of donated books and computers delivered to Popondetta in PNG. Well done Alan.
• The RSVP for The Rotary Foundation Million Dollar Dinner to be held on Sunday 27 Feb 2016, has been extended to Sun 14 February.
• The annual district RYPEN (the Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment) camp is to be held at Coolum from 6-8 March 2016. This camp targets 14-17 year olds with the potential to improve their leadership skills. Interested candidates are sought for the club to nominate.
• Nominations from motivated senior school students are also sought for the national Adventure in Citizenship week to be held in Canberra later in the year.
• Rick V. updated the club on MCSR (Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve) matters. The council has endorsed the go-ahead for the significant improvements planned for the Education/Discovery Centre. This will require the temporary closure of the existing centre and cafe while the work is carried out. Temporary facilities will be used during construction. It is hoped that the project will be completed by the end of the year.
• Jim A. reminded members about the payment of Club dues.
• Rick T. updated the club on the shopping bag project. The manufactured bags have not been delivered yet. The Maleny newsagency has agreed to sell the bags, plus the IGA has indicated interest as well. Rick also alerted members of an opportunity to participate in a working bee every Tuesday morning 8-10am at the Historical Village.

Guest Speaker:
Terry Day gave a detailed and thought provoking presentation on the urgent need for Australia to become a leader and innovator in manufacturing. Terry is a member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and the International Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). He lamented the fact that Australia has begun to slide economically, in part due to an inept or careless loss of talent, plus sliding coal, iron ore and commodities sales. His mantra was Australia must manufacture and export. But manufacture what? Terry’s powerpoint presentation used statistics, videos, quotes from official documents, research data, and numerous specific examples to illustrate that a body of knowledge exists that could be exploited commercially for national economic gain.

Terry proceeded to give us a physics lesson on vorticity. Explaining with appropriate illustrations and examples many ‘vortices” such as the trailing edge vortex, starting vortex, bound vortex, and diffusion vortex. One specific example he expanded on was how the vorticity concept enabled superior performance of the Stelth pump. The Stelth pump outperforms conventional pumps because it employs vorticity and space flight technology. These pumps could now be manufactured in Australia. Other specific examples given using the vorticity concept, were a vacuum cleaner which used a high suction principle, blowing air rather than sucking; a salon hairdryer; a novel bladeless ceiling fan and a wind turbine. Terry also described research projects in association with the University of Adelaide, and said that the government has told Australian universities that now they should change from “publish or perish” to “commercialise or perish”. He passed around an innovative pump valve that was long lasting, efficient, and could be produced cheaply. The whole presentation was peppered with lots of technical jargon that had those with backgrounds in engineering, mechanical, or manufacturing or similar, leaning forward in their chairs.

Terry reinforced that the time for Australian innovation in manufacturing is now. He said the challenge is navigating the Government’s current Innovation and Manufacturing initiative through the bureaucracies and manufacturing sector, that is, turning the “can’t do” into the “can do” country. He said we need products to be made in Australia rather than China. It is therefore imperative for the government to Support Innovation and Support Manufacturing and Export. With the discussion that ensued, it seemed that everyone in the audience very much agreed.
