MEETING OF 14TH APRIL
Pres Jeff welcomed all and introduced guest speaker Bryan Mason from ROMAC. Special guest also present was DGE Alan Stevenson.  Pres Jeff read some recent changes by RI to membership, e-clubs, meeting flexibility – all good news.

Chris B spoke about the upcoming events, especially the Wood Expo and the potential to raise lots of funds by all contributing to the roster.  Jeff and Chris also spoke of the special meeting for 27th April at Tranquil Park. (See item below). Partial names were gathered for the combination Youth Night / Community Grants Awards Night.

DGE Alan spoke briefly on Polio – our top priority and with only 10 cases so far in the world (2 Afghanistan/8 in Pakistan) we are on path to ridding the planet of polio. Also mentioned that Rotoract members can now be members of Rotary clubs.

Meal over Chris B fined us all AND passed around the blind raffle. Won by me and it was not rigged. Many thanks for those who contributed to my good fortune.  Chris B extracted thoughtful penalties from all. Jim A cross fine on the dangers of Meals on Wheels delivery and John W spent two minutes trying to explain his way out of a cross fine. Not many were convinced.

Lionel introduced guest speaker Bryan Mason who spoke knowledgably on ROMAC (Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children), its beginnings in 1988 in the Asia Pacific region.  Then 10 years ago it evolved to increase its effort to support more children needing life saving surgery. He showed us a 4 minute video about a lad from Vanuatu with deformed feet and the good news story following his rehabilitation.

ROMAC expanded to Qld in 1998 and this year marks its 400th patient. This year alone has seen 43 patients treated and it also marks the 100th patient from Timor Leste. In closing he mentioned that bed space is now the greatest challenge in bring more kids to ROMAC. He appreciated the $1000 donation from our club and is looking to developing a global grant to get more local training and local knowledge to the countries from which the children are selected.

Rick V thanked him for his thoughtful and informative speech and, by way of thanks, presented him with our History of Maleny through Rotary and our world famous (already seen in Tokyo and Miami) shopping bag.

Pres Jeff concluded with thanks our guest and guest speaker, reminding all about the sausage sizzle on 14 May and wished a safe journey home.

PRESENTATION OF ROTARY GRANTS
At an enjoyable and well run evening at Tranquil Park on 27th April, President Jeff presided and handed over grants cheques totalling $8,340 to 14 local groups - see Board minutes for details of the recipients.  There was an emphasis before the awards on the Club's involvement with youth matters with excellent speeches from a TS Centaur cadet and a member of Interact.

Chris B was as ever an entertaining MC. Hopefully there will be some photographs in this week's Glasshouse Country and Maleny News.

MEETING OF 3RD FEBRUARY
President Jeff welcomed members and guests to the meeting. He passed around a certificate issued by the Sunshine Coast Regional Council, acknowledging that the Club had been a nominee in the Community Group section of the 2016 Australia Day Awards. While the Club didn’t win, the nominee certificate was very impressive and much appreciated.

Other events and business discussed included:
• Alan W. was congratulated on finally getting the container of donated books and computers delivered to Popondetta in PNG. Well done Alan.
• The RSVP for The Rotary Foundation Million Dollar Dinner to be held on Sunday 27 Feb 2016, has been extended to Sun 14 February.
• The annual district RYPEN (the Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment) camp is to be held at Coolum from 6-8 March 2016. This camp targets 14-17 year olds with the potential to improve their leadership skills. Interested candidates are sought for the club to nominate.
• Nominations from motivated senior school students are also sought for the national Adventure in Citizenship week to be held in Canberra later in the year.
• Rick V. updated the club on MCSR (Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve) matters. The council has endorsed the go-ahead for the significant improvements planned for the Education/Discovery Centre. This will require the temporary closure of the existing centre and cafe while the work is carried out. Temporary facilities will be used during construction. It is hoped that the project will be completed by the end of the year.
• Jim A. reminded members about the payment of Club dues.
• Rick T. updated the club on the shopping bag project. The manufactured bags have not been delivered yet. The Maleny newsagency has agreed to sell the bags, plus the IGA has indicated interest as well. Rick also alerted members of an opportunity to participate in a working bee every Tuesday morning 8-10am at the Historical Village.

Guest Speaker:
Terry Day gave a detailed and thought provoking presentation on the urgent need for Australia to become a leader and innovator in manufacturing. Terry is a member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and the International Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). He lamented the fact that Australia has begun to slide economically, in part due to an inept or careless loss of talent, plus sliding coal, iron ore and commodities sales. His mantra was Australia must manufacture and export. But manufacture what? Terry’s powerpoint presentation used statistics, videos, quotes from official documents, research data, and numerous specific examples to illustrate that a body of knowledge exists that could be exploited commercially for national economic gain.

Terry proceeded to give us a physics lesson on vorticity. Explaining with appropriate illustrations and examples many ‘vortices” such as the trailing edge vortex, starting vortex, bound vortex, and diffusion vortex. One specific example he expanded on was how the vorticity concept enabled superior performance of the Stelth pump. The Stelth pump outperforms conventional pumps because it employs vorticity and space flight technology. These pumps could now be manufactured in Australia. Other specific examples given using the vorticity concept, were a vacuum cleaner which used a high suction principle, blowing air rather than sucking; a salon hairdryer; a novel bladeless ceiling fan and a wind turbine. Terry also described research projects in association with the University of Adelaide, and said that the government has told Australian universities that now they should change from “publish or perish” to “commercialise or perish”. He passed around an innovative pump valve that was long lasting, efficient, and could be produced cheaply. The whole presentation was peppered with lots of technical jargon that had those with backgrounds in engineering, mechanical, or manufacturing or similar, leaning forward in their chairs.

Terry reinforced that the time for Australian innovation in manufacturing is now. He said the challenge is navigating the Government’s current Innovation and Manufacturing initiative through the bureaucracies and manufacturing sector, that is, turning the “can’t do” into the “can do” country. He said we need products to be made in Australia rather than China. It is therefore imperative for the government to Support Innovation and Support Manufacturing and Export. With the discussion that ensued, it seemed that everyone in the audience very much agreed.

MEETING OF 7TH OCTOBER
President Jeff opened the meeting by welcoming guests DG John Leddy, his wife Barbara, ADG Ian, Partners and Noella Mills who had submitted the winning design in the shopping bag competition.
Reports received:
- Melbourne Cup luncheon bookings close on 20 October.
- SC Rotoract Club Charter Night at USC on 16 October.
- The Maple St kiosk has been booked for calendar sales on 17 October.

Rotary talk - Angela gave a brief history of RAWCS which was set up in 1964 initially to combat health and poverty problems in PNG and Indonesia.  There have been 470 projects throughout Australia.  In 2013 RAWCS projects totalled $3 million; our Club's donations to Ebenezer and Shed The Light Nepal are made through RAWCS.

Rick V introduced Noella Mills, a member of Art4Place, who showed her winning design for the shopping bag. This incorporated an outline of a platypus on a black background  with Maleny and the Rotary logo. She thanked the Club for arranging this competition and was awarded her prizes.

DG John from RC of Hamilton had just returned from a 4 week trip with his wife to PNG.  He spoke of his visits to local Clubs and particularly about the ongoing success of RAM. He reported good news for the District with the revival of Rotoract, an upgrade for RYLA with a focus on professional development and encouraging signs of growth. He hoped for two new Clubs.  John emphasised the need to embrace change as this is good for Clubs; he noted that Cooroy and Eumundi Clubs were conducting their business meetings in the CWA Hall without a formal meal.

The DIK warehouse is full to overflowing with no funds available for shipping.  Following his time in PNG, he received a promise from a local governor for funding that is being finalised.  He is happy to accept submissions for the monthly newsletter.

Barbara, who is a member of Brisbane Highrise, spoke of the work of Humming Bird House which runs two palliative care cottages in Australia for terminally ill children.  A third cottage is planned for Chermside with a promise of government grants.  She is organising a project to construct a peaceful private courtyard within this facility beside the "end of life suite" for the exclusive use of parents and family.  There are 3,700 terminally ill children in Queensland.  This charity has been chosen by the Club as a beneficiary from the Melbourne Cup lunch.

A PASSING THOUGHT ABOUT MORTALITY

An old priest lay dying. He sent a message for an Australian Tax Office collector and his Lawyer to come to the hospital.

When they arrived, they were ushered up to his room and as they entered the priest held out his hands and motioned for them to sit on each side of the bed.

The priest grasped their hands, sighed contentedly, smiled and stared at the ceiling. For a time, no one said anything.

Both the tax collector and the lawyer were touched and flattered that the old man would ask them to be with him during his final moments.

They were also puzzled because the priest had never given any indication that he particularly liked either one of them.

Finally, the Lawyer asked,  "Father, we are honoured to be here but why did you ask the two of us to come? "

The old priest mustered all his strength, and then said weakly, "Jesus died between two thieves, and that's how I'd like to go."

MEETING OF 2ND SEPTEMBER
President Jeff welcomed guest and former Rotarian David Fraser, guest speaker Richard Giles and 18 members of the Club and thanked all those who attended the Assembly the week before – the highest attendance for many years. He also urged members to spruik and attend the Club’s Melbourne Cup event on 3 November at Tiffany’s on Mountain View Road.  Flyers would soon be ready to advertise the event and, Tim Abbott, the MC was a real life marriage celebrant so there could even be a chance to get married again-  “once is enough” exclaimed Lionel!

Alan Wilson attended the District seminar on membership and briefed members encouraging them to help in identifying potential new members.

Other announcements included: the Cluster plan for a music event at Eudlo Hall, opening of the peace sculptures on the new Precinct boardwalk, photo on the Bridge over the Obi at the Showgrounds, selling calendars from the kiosk on 19 Sept, and thanks to those who had helped to hang the photos at Maple 3. Rick reported that Nyla Mills design for the Rotary bags had been selected and would now proceed to production. Bernice sought volunteers to do the BBQ at 20 Sept Pioneer Day.

As the first 5 minute Rotary Education slot introduced by the new President, Michael Gregory provided information about RI’s three goals for 2015/16 – stronger clubs, greater impact on polio and humanitarian service, raising awareness of Rotary’s contribution to good in the world.

Chris B extracted the usual huge fines for questionable improprieties since the last meeting. Bill won the Heads and Tails.

Our guest, Richard Giles the locally based expert in Fung Shui (translated literally as wind and water), provided fascinating insights into the 5000 yr old Chinese philosophical system of harmonizing everyone with their surrounding environment.  He explained that in assessing a building (which could take up to 6 hours for which he charged $490) he used a unique type of Chinese compass to determine the best positioning to retain positive energy – Qi (pronounced Chi).

Samples of the most important factors included:
1.    the positioning and colour of the front door – red front doors were especially harmonising (lucky the scribe has a red door!).
2.    avoiding obstructions on paths and walkways e g pillars outside doors.
3.    in bedrooms it was important to properly position the back of the bed and in offices not have one’s back to the door nor a fan overhead, which would be equivalent to blades cutting through you.

Richard finished by referring to 2015/16 as being the year of the goat or sheep – usually meaning pacifier or moderator – which it would be hoped would click in soon bearing in mind the current global challenges of conflict, suffering and environmental degradation affecting us all.
