MINUTES OF MEETING OF 21ST FEBRUARY
A well attended meeting with five guests - Gail Denver (MDSRC), Winston Johnston (Lions Blackall Range), Colin Sandford (Lions Blackall Range), and Rotary partners Leon and Mike.

Following the usual formalities President Alan held a Rotary new member induction ceremony for Laurelle Owen. He was assisted by Bernice.  Following the ceremony all members rose and formally welcomed Laurelle to the Club.

President Alan briefed the meeting on the make up of Club committees and confirmed that the 2018/19 Board Changeover dinner will be on the 27th June at The Orangery. As usual Alan promised some form of entertainment on the evening but would not elaborate. Alan also asked members to consider if they could nominate anyone to attend the next RYLA camp.

Rick V attended a community ‘morning tea’ hosted by the Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace. Rick  had the opportunity to discuss the project for shade cloth over the netball courts at the Maleny High School. The Club has received a Federal Government grant of $19,000 for the project but this is way short of the $360,000 quoted by the Qld Government works department. There will be further meetings on this issue.

Jeff asked the members to consider options for the Melbourne Cup lunch fundraiser and hoped that more members would become involved. Jim commented that the 3 Melbourne Cup lunches that we have held raised over $18,000.

Gail Denver spoke about the MDSRC Awards dinner on Saturday 24th March at The Orangery. They have an excellent guest speaker in Dr Adrian McCallum from USC.To get an idea of what Dr McCallum may talk about at the dinner I suggest you google his name.

The raffle was won by Peter McGuirck. The Sergeant Chris again dreamt up some outlandish tales to fine members and guests.

Visitors Gail, Winston and member Greg then combined to give us an interesting and informative overview of a proposal for a community park to be established by a joint project involving Rotary, Lions, Apex and the MDSRC. The location would be on Parkland Drive next to the Light Horse Parade ground. The proposal is for a Memorial Walk commemorating the ‘pioneer women’ of the Maleny District, barbecues, a playground and toilet facilities. A possible name would be the Memorial & Pioneer Community Park.

The suggestion is that a joint committee with representatives from the 4 groups be formed to get this started. It was noted that the proposed park would be on the MDSRC leased part of the Maleny Precinct land.



Greg thanked Gail, Winston and Colin. Jeff presented all 3 guests with a Rotary Maleny Platypus shopping bag and a copy each of Maleny’s best calendar. 

President Alan thanked all for attending and closed the meeting.

ALLEVIATION OF MALNUTRITION PROJECT IN PNG - PROGRESS REPORT

This progress report is being sent because your Club expressed interest in the project and pledged funds towards a Global Grant to implement it. I have been focused primarily on awareness within D9600 and fundraising over the past 12 months or so. It is a long time since I spoke to your Club, hence the need to update you on progress.

The Budget

The aim was to provide funding of US$50,000 for the project. Unfortunately, I have fallen short of this goal but there may be a couple of late contributions to help out.

So far, we have a total of US$37,865 from $20,000AUD contributed by Rotary Clubs (Nambour $10,000, Gympie $5,000, Nundah $3,000 and Maleny $2,000). This becomes $30,000 when matched by D9600 DDF and $37,850 US  when TRF funding is added. This total is $12,150 under budget for the project.

An extra $5,000 AUD would bring us up to just over $50,000 USD. With some luck we might get closer to our budget goal before the proposal is actually submitted in a few weeks time.

Work undertaken to date:

• I have undertaken extensive research in the planning of this project, including seeking advice from a variety of technical experts.
• Scoping study undertaken by in Feb – March 2017.
• Draft booklet with illustrations, daily diet chart and workshop manual  created.

Work to be done:

• Global Grant request to be submitted to the Rotary Foundation in March 2018. 
• The Train the Trainer workshops for volunteer trainers from 10 representative village groupings (ca 30 trainees) will be held at Mougulu in June 2018.

 The Process for fund donors:

• After TRF have considered the project and approved it (a ca 1 month process ), they will notify me to inform me that the project will be supported by TRF.
• TRF will advise me to set up a special bank account for the project 
• Monies to be matched by TRF must then be deposited in that account. No funding can be provided by TRF until all cash contributions are deposited. Presumably, the same conditions apply for funds from D9600 DDF.
• As soon as I receive confirmation that TRF will support this project, I will notify those Rotary Clubs who have pledged funds to support the project of this and ask their Treasurers to deposit pledged funds into the project account. I hope this will be completed by mid May at the latest to give you an idea of a possible time frame.

MINUTES OF LAST MEETING
The President opened the meeting with the usual formalities. There was a good representation of members and several guests, including PDG Alan Stevens, Past Member Bob Hall and Sue Hall, and prospective members Peter McGuirk and Antionette Van Geet.

PDG Alan made a very special presentation to Sheryl and Michael Gregory in recognition of their becoming Rotary Foundation Major Donors Level 1. Alan presented them with an engraved crystal recognition piece, Sheryl with a ‘Diamond necklace’, and Michael with a ‘Diamond pin’.  They received a standing ovation.

The President confirmed that the 1st Wednesday in 2018 will be a social evening at the Nieper’s home. All members, their families and friends are invited. Further details to come.

He then showed a short motivational video of a speech by Paul Harris delivered in the 1940s on the ‘Future of Rotary’.

Bernice reported on an order for club shirts. As Treasurer, Jim reported on the financial result of the 2017 Melbourne Cup day lunch. The money raised was $4,814 and the Board decided to round this up to allow for a donation of $2,500 each to Hear and Say Nambour and the Maleny Hospital Auxiliary.

Rick V has 9 members attending the Sunshine Coast Council emergency exercise “Operation Heatburn” on the 29th November.

Following the meal, the Sergeant entertained us with a number of ridiculous
tales leading to fines on members and guests. Equally dubious was the conduct of the ‘lottery’ with Chris B winning the $25.00!

After coffee Malcolm introduced the night’s guest speaker Dr Cl Claridge who gave us a very entertaining and educational overview of Nepal and more specifically the activities and projects of Shed the Light Nepal. The talk was titled Women’s Empowerment, Training and Business Development, RAWCS Project 7-2016-17 - Rotary Club of Maleny & Rotary Club of Thamel and Shed the Light Nepal.

The Objectives of the project are:
•    To facilitate the social and economic empowerment of women from disadvantaged backgrounds;
•    To develop and implement a range of training programs for women;
•    To develop women’s micro-finance projects;
•    To increase women’s ability to meet the educational needs of their children.

The location of the project is the Handikhola Village Development Area, Makwanpur District, Nepal. This is a very remote area with a sparse population and poor or non-existent facilities. Travel is difficult at all times and impossible in the ‘wet’ season.

At this stage there are 54 women and 5 men involved in the project.
Training courses
•Sewing skills –30 women (Chepang)
•Computer skills –24 women + 5 men (Bankariya)
•Business management x 2 

Sewing Skills Training
Sewing skills training involves 30 women in Chepang. Approximately half the participants are married with children. The average family income is AUD 2.40 per day with many families having an income of less than AUD 0.80 per day.

Computer Skills Training
Involves 24 females and 5 males, 18 of whom are school students.

NEXT - The next programs to be started involve mushroom and ginger production.

CL supported these basic sub-titles with some wonderful photos and her personal observations and knowledge of the area. A very professional presentation and so that all members can have the opportunity to see it the presentation has been made available on the blog with a YouTube link.

The pack moves according to the elders' pace and help each other, watch each other.

MINUTES OF LAST MEETING


President Alan welcomed visitors Agnes from Maleny and Peter from Beerwah, who were first time visitors to the Club, as well as Kelly who is hosting Adria,our Youth Exchange Student.

Chris Brooker reminded us all of the valour of the soldiers of the 4th Light Horse Brigade at Beersheba 100 years ago on the afternoon of 31 October 1917.   It was a bold attack when 800 men of the 4th and 12th Light Horse regiments charged across open desert and over the Turk trenches with bayonets in hand.  The charge captured Beersheba and opened the way to Jerusalem.

A song by Graham Roger and a toast proposed by Rick Vickers to the Maleny Light Horse Troop completed the commemoration.

Reports from the President and Directors included:
I.    The appointment of a small group by the Board to build on the review of membership undertaken by Phillip Stark. The aim is to enhance the vibrancy and size of the Club. There is the possibility of an independent survey through USC about perceptions of Rotary in the Maleny community.
II.    Bernice reminded members to return their Youth Declaration forms before she went on vacation.
III.    Jeff updated Melbourne Cup arrangements and the good numbers attending despite the increased competition.
IV.    Calendar sales were underway and CL volunteered to host the kiosk on 11 November to sell.
V.    Ric reported that the proposed Glasshouse/ Maleny debate had been postponed.
VI.    Rick sought volunteers for the SC Evacuation exercise from 08.30 to 2pm on 29 November.
VII.    Bernice advised that more Club shirts were being ordered if anyone wanted more – orders to Treasurer Jim.
VIII.    The Christmas party was being organised for 20 Dec at the Hankinson's place and  entertainment was being organised by Chris B.

Chris Brooker took to the stage again to dispense fines for “misdemeanors” including Rick T who absconded with the key to the male toilet which was hooked to a large toilet brush!; Bernice for yet another birthday; Angela for being a media tart; Jeff for continuing to hide from his wife that he had bought a brand new motorbike; and David for donating 5 litres from his heart and surviving.

Our speaker for the evening was our very own Youth Exchange Student – Adria from Barcelona who had been sponsored in Spain by the Santa Marta Club.   He was born on 4 May 2001 and lived in the town of Valldorex, which had a population of 8000. He was fond soccer, downhill biking and motorbiking and Chic – his little Jack Russell dog.

Since he had arrived in Australia he had visited Fraser Island (which he thought people were calling Freezer Island) and the Great Barrier Reef; seen whales; learned to surf and cook and how to do the washing up; and play the saxophone in the school band.

He was a regular at the Rotary sausage sizzles  - clearly responsible for increasing sales and attracting customers – especially the girls!  Adria confirmed he was learning a lot from his Maleny Rotary Club friends and would be returning to Spain in June next year.

A HOPEFUL PARABLE
AN OLD DOG TEACHES ITSELF NEW TRICKS

An old Doberman starts chasing rabbits and, before long, discovers that he's lost.

Wandering about, he notices a lion heading rapidly in his direction with the intention of having lunch.

The old Doberman thinks, "Oh, oh! I'm in deep trouble now!"

Noticing some bones on the ground close by, he immediately settles down to chew on the bones with his back to the approaching cat.

Just as the lion is about to leap, the old Doberman exclaims loudly,

"Boy, that was one delicious lion! I wonder, if there are any more around here?"

Hearing this, the young lion halts his attack in mid-stride, a look of terror comes over him and he slinks away into the trees.

"Whew!," says the lion, "That was close! That old Doberman nearly had me!"

Meanwhile, a squirrel, who had been watching the whole scene from a nearby tree, figures he can put this knowledge to good use and trade it for protection from the lion. So, off he goes.

The squirrel soon catches up with the lion, spills the beans and strikes a deal for himself with the lion.

The young lion is furious at being made a fool of and says, "Here, squirrel, hop on my back and see what's going to happen to that conniving canine!"

Now, the old Doberman sees the lion coming with the squirrel on his back and thinks, "What am I going to do now?," but instead of running, the dog  sits down  with his back to his attackers, pretending he hasn't seen them yet. Just when they get close enough to hear, the old Doberman says........

"Where's that squirrel? I sent him off an hour ago to bring me another lion!"

Hopeful moral of this story...

Don't mess with the old dogs... Age and experience will always overcome youth and treachery!

MINUTES OF LAST MEETING
President Alan opened the meeting by welcoming members, partners, Adria, our guest speaker Brian Springer, Greg Williams and members of his family.  He then proceeded to induct Greg as a member of the Club which was greeted by a standing ovation.  Greg spoke of his history in Maleny and his work with a number of  community organisations.  He looked forward to contributing to the Club.

Ric T reported that he had carried out his psychology test with the Glasshouse Club. There was a suggestion that the two Clubs might debate "Is wine preferable to beer?" or some other weighty topic on the Vocational night of 29th November.

Jeff confirmed that he had attended the Interact AGM.  It was a good meeting and the committee positions were filled.  The Club had had a successful year and had thanked Fran whose last meeting it was.

Bernice urged members to return their Youth Declaration forms so that they could be submitted to District before 17 November.

Alan informed us that an iPad had been donated to the High School for a student with special needs.

Lionel won the raffle.  This put him in good stead compared to the other unfortunates present who fell foul of the Sergeant's fake news.

Brian Springer, D9600 Ambassador for ShelterBox, began by thanking the Club for its past donations for ShelterBoxes.  He informed us that it was now possible to make smaller donations for other emergency supplies such as family tents, ShelterKits, water filters and mosquito nets.

He gave an audio-visual presentation covering the type of relief work that ShelterBox and Rotary have undertaken.  ShelterBox was founded in 2000 in the town of Helston, Cornwall, UK. That same year the Rotary Club of Helston-Lizard adopted it as its millennium project. ShelterBox is an international disaster relief charity that provides temporary shelter and life saving supplies to displaced families. ShelterBox Response Teams distribute boxes on the ground, working closely with local organisations, international aid agencies and Rotary clubs worldwide.

Brian explained that the work for ShelterBox would never be completed as natural disasters will continue to occur worldwide, meaning an ongoing need to supply displaced families with basic shelter, helping to turn despair into hope.

A HUSBAND'S POETIC RECOLLECTIONS

I have a little GPS
I've had it all my life
It’s better than the normal ones
My GPS is my wife

It gives me full instructions
Especially how to drive
"It's thirty miles an hour", it says
"You're doing thirty five"

It tells me when to stop and start
And when to use the brake
And tells me that it's never ever
Safe to overtake

It tells me when a light is red
And when it goes to green
It seems to know instinctively
Just when to intervene.

It lists the vehicles just in front
And all those to the rear
And taking this into account
It specifies my gear.

I'm sure no other driver
Has so helpful a device
For when we leave and lock the car
It still gives its advice.
It fills me up with counselling,
Each journey's pretty fraught;
So why don't I exchange it
And get a quieter sort?

Ah well, you see, it cleans the house,
Makes sure I'm properly fed,
It washes all my shirts and things
And - keeps me warm in bed!

Despite all these advantages
And my tendency to scoff,
I do wish that once in a while
I could turn the damned thing off.

MINUTES OF LAST MEETING

Ric Townsend chaired the meeting and welcomed our guests  DG John Lane, ADG Linda Morrell, prospective new member Greg Williams and David's cousin. He then proceeded to set a complicated, multi choice written test on our most important reasons for joining Rotary - answers in three words please.

*Secretary Bernice requested that Youth Declaration Forms to be filled out by all members.

*Jeff C gave a reminder to buy tickets early for the Melbourne Cup Function . The Hinterland Times is to give good publicity for the event.

*Chris B reported that the Interact Club has 14 members attending coffee mornings on Tuesdays. It is going well. A grant application for $20,000 from Andrew Wallace for netball courts to be covered at the school is to be submitted. The cost for covering all the courts is approximately $350,000. The state grant application is in progress.

He also reported on the funeral of our former President Gordon Jones, who had also headed the local  RSL.

*Rick V, who had served with Gordon, spoke of his outstanding achievements during his military career.  Coincidentally he then won the raffle.

* Mercifully the Sergeant's session was both short and sweet.

We then were addressed by DG John Lane who explained that his journey was started by Michael Gregory whose name was on his chain of office.

He had just returned from the Solomon Island and PNG clubs. Very different from ours with 3 or 4 members chatting about Rotary and membership problems. Some highlights were:

Manus are asking for donations for school kindies and also computers.

In Mt Hagen it was election time and oil was poured on the flight runway so no planes could take off or land.

There were fires in houses on Manus Island but no fire engines or any other way to extinguish the fires except by buckets.

He spoke of the need of higher membership numbers to help with administration of the 66 clubs in our District. There has been a loss of 1200 members in 12 months in Australia as a whole. The number of Districts may have to be lowered from 16 to 10-12 by amalgamation. Aging population is of course a contributing factor. However India and Africa have increases in membership numbers.

The governing body of Rotary has made changes to flexibility, to allow clubs to change number of meeting and their format as well as introducing corporate membership.Clubs to be allowed the freedom to do what they need to do still following Rotary principles.

Polio numbers are still decreasing, but still active in Afghanistan and Pakistan. $50 million is needed over the next 3 years to eradicate polio. WHO is committed to assisting eradication of Polio.

He urged club members to log into the internet, Rotary Central, to put forward goals for the year and also enter a record of hours worked on projects to show future partners with Rotary what is contributed.

The Rotary Foundation enables Rotary to do bigger and better projects and has low administration costs.

His wife Helen Bo Morse has as her partner project the Purple Bus.  This vehicle which has Aboriginal paintings covering most of it. It is used to transport Central Australian patients to Alice Springs for dialysis for the many with renal diseases. Nurse Sarah Brown has raised money from selling paintings to enable the purple Bus to have 2 dialysis machines on board so some can be treated without having to travel.

John was thanked by Rick Vickers and was presented with a Platypus bag and one of our calendars.

FURTHER PROBLEMS FOR THE ELDERLY
1. A NURSE REPORTS FROM HOSPITAL

Hospital regulations require a wheel chair for patients being discharged. However, while working as a student nurse, I found one elderly gentleman already
dressed and sitting on the bed with a suitcase at his feet, who insisted he didn't need my help to leave the hospital.

After a chat about rules being rules, he reluctantly let me wheel him to the lift.

On the way down I asked him if his wife was meeting him.

'I don't know,' he said. 'She's still upstairs in the bathroom changing out of her hospital gown.'

2. A DOCTOR REPORTS

Morris, an 82 year-old man, went to the doctor to get a physical.

A few days later, the doctor saw Morris walking down the street with a gorgeous young woman on his arm.

A couple of days later, the doctor spoke to Morris and said, 'You're really doing great, aren't you?'

Morris replied, 'Just doing what you said, Doc: 'Get a hot mamma and be cheerful.'
'
The doctor said, 'I didn't say that. I said, 'You've got a heart murmur; be careful.'

MINUTES OF LAST MEETING
President Alan opened the meeting by welcoming our guests – guest speaker Susan Griffith, YEP inbound student Adria from Lloret de Mar Spain and Kate Huth accompanied by her parents. 

Malcolm introduced Adria more fully and banners were exchanged.  It seems that Lloret is a popular honeymoon spot! 

Jim introduced Kate whom the Club sponsored to a Science Summer School in 1994 and YEP to Denmark in 1997.  Since then Kate has been active in Apex rising to National President in 2013 and World President last year, teaching English as a second language in Indonesia and Italy and, currently teaching Indonesian  in Albany, WA.  She has applied for a Rotary Peace Fellowship in Education and Curriculum Development in either USA or Sweden.

Michael reported that he had secured a high profile speaker, Kim Kirkman, founder and musical director of the Ten Tenors, as guest speaker but the only date  he is available is 14 December which is a Thursday.  Club members agreed that we would change the day of our regular meeting that week and endeavour to maximise attendance.

Keith introduced our Guest speaker Susan Griffith – manager and trainer at Lifelines’ Maroochydore Office.  Lifeline was established in the sixties by Reverend Dr Alan Walker as a means to support those who were isolated and had no one to turn to for assistance in times of need.  The need was great and Lifeline quickly expanded to the national organisation we know today with its well-known phone number of 13 11 14.  Except for the critical timeframe of 2200 to  0400 their phone line is staffed mostly by volunteers 24/7 and they also have online chat and are developing a texting option.  They also offer face to face consultations and educational workshops. 

Their vision is an Australia free of suicide, to provide support in times of crisis and to make communities safer.  They do not judge or offer solutions but rather help their callers to reach their own recovery plan.  They receive over a million calls a year which  equates to around 3,000 a day and 5% are at high risk of suicide.  They are able to trace the high risk calls and alert police and ambulance.

Males over 85  are the highest at risk group followed by the 25-50 group and the need in our area is increasing!  Nationally in 2015 there were 3,027 suicides, around 6,000 more attempted and a further 1.2 million thought about it!  This is twice the number of road  deaths and four times the number of murders. 

Susan then shared with us a couple of emotional stories about people saved by her organisation, one of whom  had appeared on Australian Story on the ABC.  Lifeline is mainly funded by Uniting Care Community Shops but Government funds their head office and they  receive government grants to fund the paid employees who staff the overnight shift.  Volunteers receive 12 months of training and have to pass crisis  support, assist, and assessment gateways – they can start attending calls after 12 weeks under supervision.

Michael thanked Susan for her excellent presentation, explained the work that our Australian Rotary Health is doing in the area of mental health research  and our own support of the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre and Low Cost Housing and presented her with the iconic Maleny Bag containing Rotary information.

ADVICE FOR SENIOR CITIZENS

FIRST DAY AT THE SENIOR COMPLEX.

 

On her first day at the senior complex, the new manager addressed all the seniors pointing out some of her rules:
                      
“The female sleeping quarters will be out-of-bounds for all males, and the male dormitory to the females.”

“Anybody caught breaking this rule will be fined $20 the first time.”

She continued, “Anybody caught breaking this rule the second time will be fined $60.

Being caught a third time will cost you a fine of $180.”

“Are there any questions?”

At this point, an older gentleman stood up in the crowd inquired:

“How much for a season pass?”
