MEETING OF 4TH MAY
Past President Ric welcomed members and guests to the meeting. Jim reported on the Interact meeting he recently attended. The Interact Club is going strongly, with many activities planned including the Big Cuppa, another sausage sizzle at Bunnings, and donation of two books to Erowal. An application has been received from a member of the Interact Club for an outgoing youth exchange placement. Members were asked to consider if any would be interested in hosting an inbound student.

Chris reported on the car parking for the Wood Show. It was a marathon event over 3 days, very well attended despite the rain mainly on Sunday, with 165 hours of Rotarian service conducted. Chris congratulated all who volunteered for the tremendous effort and asked for feedback so we can further streamline the parking operation for future events.

Guest Speaker for the evening was Heatley Gilmore. He and his wife Michelle own The Hinterland Times. Heatley’s talk followed on from Michelle’s presentation over two years ago when they had just taken ownership of the newspaper. Heatley described himself as a person who was entrepreneurial, needed a challenge, and embraced change and his career journey certainly showed evidence of that.

Born on the Darling Downs, met Michelle at the University of New England, worked for the Toowoomba Chronicle, spent time packing small goods at KR Darling Downs, wanted to get into beef marketing, launched a rural youth newspaper, headed to the UK and launched a very successful business consultancy which ended up having 70 franchises, also worked in Mackay in accounting, and Gympie –  launching Gympie on-line. The description of his past jobs came thick and fast. He said what he learned from all his jobs was phenomenal, and he said not to be afraid of bouncing around in different jobs.

Heatley brought the club up to date on progress with The Hinterland Times since they purchased it and the Rainbow Beach Community News two and a half years ago. The paper now employs 6-7 local people, prints 14,000 copies, and won the Queensland Country Press Association’s Award for best newspaper in country Queensland in 2015. He gave some statistics about the value of regional newspapers collated from a recent survey. Apparently 4 million people in Australia read regional newspapers, and believe that they are the most trusted form of information.

Heatley said at the Times they have a policy of not picking up press releases so as to provide relevant information, believing it is important to maintain a balanced view, and retain loyalty. They aim for 50—55% advertising content. So what’s new with the paper – there is a brand new food drink and wine section, are tapping into the tourism market, increase in pages from 44 to 56 for some editions, sponsorship of lots of events such as the recent Wood Show, and they are getting fantastic feedback which they really value.

Heatley was congratulated for his success with the Times, and members were treated to the latest copy, hot off the press, and agreed that it always made good reading.

ROTARY SCHOLARSHIP NIGHT AT USC

A group of Club members attended this annual meeting with Chris and his team running a successful bar. The Scholarship winners were impressive and the picture shows the local Presidents whose Clubs had made contributions to the Scholarship Fund in the past year.
President Jeff is shyly located in the back row.

TRIP TO ANTARTICA
Members will recall the talk given by Dale Jacobsen.  She has sent Mike G the following email:
Since my talk to the Maleny Rotary Club about Antarctica in March, I have received really good news from Oceanwide Expeditions (the company I travelled to Antarctica with) and thought you might like to share it with the rest of the Rotarians.

The 2017 Ross Sea cruise that I spoke about has been reduced from $27,995 USD to $19,950 USD, but also - and this is the exciting bit - they have given me an exclusive gift code to pass on to anyone I know who is interested. By quoting the code below, they receive an extra 10% reduction to the already reduced price, bringing it down to $17,955 USD.

The gift code is: DALE10GIFT

I am attaching a flyer in case it is of any use.

Cheers Dale

NOW FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT
A CAUTIONARY MEDICAL TALE - DOCTOR'S INSTRUCTIONS
NB THIS IS NOT A PARTY POLITICAL STATEMENT!

This is why you (a Senior?) should listen to your Doctors instructions.

I went to my nearby Pharmacy, straight to the back where the Pharmacists’ high counter is located. I took out my little brown bottle, along with a teaspoon, and set them up on the counter.

The Pharmacist came over, smiled, and asked if he could help me.

I said, "Yes! Could you please taste this for me?"

Seeing a senior citizen, the Pharmacist went along. He took the spoon, put a tiny bit of the liquid on it, put it on his tongue and swilled it around.  Then, with a stomach-churning look on his face, he spat it out on the floor and began coughing. When he finally was finished, I looked him right in the eye
and asked, “Now, does that taste sweet to you?"

The Pharmacist, shaking his head back and forth with a venomous look in his eyes yelled, “HELL NO!!!"

I said, "Oh, thank God! That's a real relief! My doctor told me to have a Pharmacist test my urine for sugar!"

I can never go back to that Pharmacy, but I really don't care, because they aren't very friendly there anymore!
