MINUTES OF LAST MEETING
President Alan opened the meeting and welcomed guest speaker Dr Russ Stephenson. A few announcements followed with pleas for arms & legs to be made available to undertake parking duties, show stall hamburgering & bucket waving. Dates to remember are:
15 May Community Awards
19 May District Assembly
22 May Annual USC/Rotary meeting
26 June Changeover Dinner at the Orangery
The members decided not to proceed with an application for YEP from a Conondale student due to hosting problems.
Jeff C told us of hosting a German Rotarian Dieter Schneider, who after suffering the sad loss of his son through suicide, decided to ride his motorbike throughout the world delivering talks on mental health and the devastating effect it can have. Jeff saddled up his trusty motorised steed and, with Dieter following, did a tour of the district following which he then delivered Dieter to Andy & Mia where animated discussions took place in German.
Our sergeant told the usual humorous fibs to extract much needed funds from unsuspecting victims.
Our enthusiastic guest speaker Rotarian (Nambour Club) Dr Russ Stephenson, who has been a previous speaker, told us of the efforts to control malaria being made in PNG. A major campaign, not dissimilar to the Polio Plus exercise, is being undertaken to hopefully eliminate malaria from PNG. The original exercise under RAMS to provide chemically treated mosquito nets was, and still is, proving of great value but additional effort was needed. A vaccine targeting the parasite was developed in Australia (Griffith Uni) and has resulted, along with a major campaign to remove mosquito breeding sites etc, in a reduction of 65% of cases in PNG. This same exercise in the Solomons resulted in an 87% reduction and in Timor Leste 99%.
Russ also gave us a brief update on his other PNG program to improve the nutrition of locals in the Highlands area of PNG.
Russ was thanked by Lionel and presented with a donation of $1000 towards his very worthwhile projects.

AND NOW FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT
A GRANDCHILD'S LAMENT
The computer swallowed grandpa.
Yes, honestly its true!
He pressed 'control and 'enter'
And disappeared from view.
It devoured him completely,
The thought just makes me squirm.
He must have caught a virus
Or been eaten by a worm.
I've searched through the recycle bin
And files of every kind;
I've even used the Internet,
But nothing did I find.
In desperation, I asked Jeeves
My searches to refine.
The reply from him was negative,
Not a thing was found 'online.'
So, if inside your 'Inbox,'
My Grandpa you should see,
Please 'Copy, Scan' and 'Paste' him
And send him back to me.
This is a tribute to all those Grandmas and Grandpas who have been fearless and learned to use the Computer.
We do not stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing .
