MINUTES OF LAST MEETING
President Alan opened the meeting with a brief report on the recent District Conference in Brisbane which focussed on health, domestic violence and Rotaract – overall it was worth the effort of attending.
Ric T gave an update on the used battery collection project, Bernice reminded us of the DIK packing day on 6 April and Star Gazing Night 10 April, and Sherryl had a word or two on PETS.
Roly reported on the Valley to Valley Rally 19 May and the need for a couple of members to assist him with organising our involvement – there will be around 40 cars with 80 people, profits to the Variety Club, and we will need to man checkpoints.
Now is the time for those attending Senior Moments to pay up. Rick reported on the Spartan Event to be held at Maleny Dairies on 6 and 7 April.
Chris decided to go for a drive – Roma – Windorah - Birdsville – Boulia - Alice – Port Augusta – Maleny - 6,280 km over 8 days – some drive! The flies were awesome and a major impediment at times!
Wood Expo 4,5,6 May all hands on deck and Glenferna opening 15 June need helpers.
Sherryl introduced our guest speaker – our own James McCormack who arrived in our area as an Electrician some 30 years ago. Born in Brisbane in the early sixties as the eldest of five, James was educated in Catholic schools, spent many holidays around the Warwick area, and at one stage considered a career in the Priesthood but took on an apprenticeship as a motor mechanic instead. He soon changed course to the electrical trade. He joined the YCW (a Catholic action group) and took part in the demonstrations at Pine Gap.
In 1990 James moved to Crystal Waters and lived there for 16 years before moving to Witta. He is interested in mental health and has hobbies of pottery and cycling (being a member of the lycra lizards).
In thanking James for his entertaining and informative talk and the time he obviously took in preparing it, Michael mentioned that Australian Rotary Health would be an obvious fit for his interest especially as their focus is on mental health and they do a lot of their fundraising through cycling events. As always talks by our own members are among the most interesting and James was thanked by acclamation.
