MINUTES OF MEETING OF 4TH JUNE
The guest speaker Ian Lucas spoke to a small but select group about his setting up of Lucas Parklands. The text of his address is given below.
"Everything begins in the wind, or as some say, everything begins with a dream. After all, and I believe this to be true, dreaming is a form of planning.... this certainly is true for Lucas Parklands and the music that is made there. For many years prior to moving to the Hinterland, I did dream about building, then living in a park and being surrounded by those who enjoy making music.
However the catalyst that took me out of an aircraft and brought my family to the Hinterland was the death of my father. He died suddenly and before his time. Contemplating my own mortality and realising that I too may be gone sooner than planned was the most important tool I've ever had to help make the big decisions in my life. So I decided to quit a secure job in aviation, move my family here to the Hinterland and build our parkland and home that I had dreamed of for so long, simply trusting that it would work out OK.
I've always been very impressed by those wonderful people who love art, can make music and are brave enough to craft their living from it. It is said that it takes a community to raise a child - it does. The Hinterland community helped me to raise mine. However it takes a very supportive country to raise and develop young artists and musicians helping them to achieve their full potential.
Without our musicians and artists a shadow would be cast over us all. I believe that there must be a balance in,our society. Just as in the past the great scientists and mathematicians have shaped the world, so have great artists, writers and composers. Countries such as China and Korea have three million students practicing an instrument as I speak; to them it is an investment in their future.
Our lengthy search for the perfect place to live and educate our children Meg and Sam finished on the Range. Lucas Parklands has hosted some of the world's great musicians, up and coming and established. However the original concept was to create a place for high achieving young musicians to perform, by that I mean, students who are undertaking a degree in music and are near completing their course. The transition from a very talented student, those on the cusp of becoming professional, to an actual professional is difficult. Hence the Young Musicians Festival. For those who participate, the Festival is a professional engagement. I hand picked seven fantastic students from the Eastern states, where need be travelled to meet them and their parents, selected their repertoire, provided them with air fares and accommodation and guaranteed them a performance fee. The chosen
repertoire is incredibly difficult although in their hands will sound as though played by one of the world's great players. This performance opportunity has been seized by those coming as they are using this occasion as preparation for international competitions/auditions.
For instance:
Anna DA Silva Chen, the young violinist from Sydney, has already attended the Menuhin Academy in London, the Cromberg Academy in Germany and is a finalist in the Australian Symphonies Young Performer Award. Some say Anna is one of the great violin students in the world.
Theresa Yu from Sydney has won a full scholarship to study piano at the Royal Academy in London.
The rest are as equally talented, most are yet to meet but know each other by reputation. These young musicians are faced with the realisation that the standard required to achieve greatness in the modern musical world is perfection.
Our commitment to young musicians will continue via the annual hosting of the Young Musicians Festival. For this Festival I drew inspiration from my grandmother, Greta Cadman, who taught my mother piano; my mother taught me and the musical lineage continues with my children Meg and Sam."
Jim gave the vote of thanks.

NOW FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT
WHY I MOW MY OWN LAWN BY LEE TREVINO
One day, shortly after joining the PGA tour in 1965, Lee Trevino, a professional golfer and married man, was at his home in Dallas, Texas, mowing his front lawn, as he always did.
A lady driving by in a big, shiny Cadillac stopped in front of his house, lowered the window and asked, “Excuse me, do you speak English?"
Lee responded, “Yes Ma'am, I do."
The lady then asked, “What do you charge to do yard work?”
Lee said, "Well, the lady in this house lets me sleep with her."
The lady hurriedly put the car into gear and sped off.
