PRESIDENT'S NOTES
Our next meeting at The Maleny Hotel on 4th August is a Business Meeting subject to COVID restrictions. We all need to log in with our Qld App, and don’t forget your masks - which can be removed when seated. We can also look forward to an interesting presentation in relation to domestic and family violence from Shannon Horsfall, one of the 2020 USC Rotary Scholarship awardees. Hopefully our current SE Qld emergency lockdown will come to an end on Tuesday afternoon, but if not we will organise a zoom meeting in its place, with an announcement from Bernice on Tuesday.

Recent Club events

• It was 3rd time lucky for all 19 Rotarians, partners and friends who attended our recent vocational visit on 28 July to the Maleny Chocolate Factory. Joint owner, Dorothy Hills, took us on a tour of the factory and demonstrated chocolates being made, while husband Steve provided us with tantalising tastes from a scrumptious assortment of the fine chocolates made on the premises with local ingredients. Our chocolate extravaganza was followed by a delicious dinner at Purple Pallet with Jens Pizza. Many thanks to Paulette S for your persistence in organising the event.

• A huge thank you also to Malcolm B and Lionel T for completing the installation of the 4th eco timber bench seat at Maleny Selectors Green on 28 July.

• Unfortunately, due to the recent emergency COVID 19 lockdown, our Kenny Cluster Joint meeting with new 9620 DG Wendy at Australia Zoo on 1 August has been postponed to a date to be announced in due course. Our members planning to help Clean Up the Obi also got to say at home.

 • Pride of Workmanship Awards. We have also been actively promoting our Pride of Workmanship Awards throughout our community over the past 2 months. The presentation Dinner will be held at Tranquil Park Resort on 21 August. We have 11 excellent nominees and will continue our fantastic local media exposure for our nominees with more articles and photographs to be published in the Glasshouse Country and Maleny News in the coming weeks leading up to the awards dinner.

• Planning Matters. Hoping you have all had an opportunity to check over our 2021-2022 ROTARY CLUB OF MALENY  BOARD and CLUB COMMITTEES Chart. Are you a member of at least one and hopefully several of our club sub-committees? We are involved in many activities and projects throughout our community and beyond, and we will spend a few minutes at our next business/project meeting to confirm memberships of these, with particular attention to ensuring

- members are involved in activities that are of interest to them, and

- each sub-committee has sufficient members to undertake their work and has a leader and deputy that can report and update a director on their activities/ projects etc.

• And a huge welcome to Neil Andison as our Club's newest member. We all look forward to sharing many years of fellowship and service with Neil and his partner Jane following his induction at our last business meeting. Sadly, Chris Ross-Smith has resigned for health reasons, leaving our total membership standing at 30.

Upcoming Events

• 21 Aug Pride of Workmanship Dinner at Tranquil Park Resort

• 28 Aug Kevin Howell Day at the Maleny Pioneer Village. Members are welcome to join our Collaborative Partners in Speak Up Now to run a stall to promote our activities, and importantly to unveil the 4th Red Bench at 11am. In this case, we have further partnered with the Mens Shed in Maleny where our member Malcolm Baker has made the new bench from materials supplied by our Collaborative Ppartners. Our local Councillor Winston Johnston and the State member for Glasshouse Andrew Powell have also been invited to attend and say a few words in support. Representatives from the Red Rose Foundation have also been invited to attend.

• 17 Oct Maleny Kite Workshop and Kite Flying Event – new creative arts and recreation event involving local children and their parents with a theme of Domestic and Family Violence and Elder Abuse Prevention at Beersheba Living Museum, Ziza Field and Maleny Settlers Green. We will be working with our Speak Up Now partners, Blackall Range Zonta Club, Maleny Neighbourhood Centre and Maleny District Sport And Recreation Club.

• Woolworths BBQ Roster. Just a reminder to keep an eye out for the roster.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 21ST JULY

President Greg opened the meeting by welcoming all members, partners and guests.  There was a special welcome for Neil Andison and his wife Jane. Neil was introduced by his proposer Mike Gregory and was inducted as a member  to a standing ovation.

Chris B gave a summary about the founding of the RSL post WW1 and of the importance of the services that it continues to make available to all veterans of whom there are 200,000 in Queensland.
Sherryl G gave an update on Speak Up Now and thanked the hotel for sponsoring the new coasters.  There will be an Open Day at the Pioneer Village on 28th August where a fourth Red Bench, made  by Malcolm B, will be unveiled.
8 members had booked for the Kenny Cluster DG meeting on 1st August.
The Sergeant had his usual wicked way with protesting members.
Our own CL was the Guest Speaker.  She gave a comprehensive review of the Kiva Charity.  This is a micro loans organisation with a world wide reach supplying low income groups or individuals who do not have without normal access to finance.  Individuals or groups can donate a minimum of $25 to any applicant. When the loan is repayed, the money can be relent.  This, over time, allows multiple loans from a single donation.
CL has been running the Club's KIVA account and gave a professional presentation. Greg W thanked her and wished her a safe journey to New Zealand.
