PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
- Changeover and Induction of New Members
It was wonderful last night to see some of our Rotary members who we haven’t seen in a while for one or another reasons. Malcolm and Nancy Baker plus Andy and Mia Schouteten were there together with Jack Wilcox and past member Bob Hall. I think everyone enjoyed the food and it was certainly noisy in the room with lots of conversations happening.

We finally inducted Lenah Komarenko, who has been sick; she was so nervous and elated at the same time - welcome Lenah. At this week’s meeting, we’ll be inducting another new member Scott Wassman, who was introduced by Lionel.

- Muscle on the Mountain Parking Sunday July 2.
Chris Brooker is asking for people to put their hands up for parking the spectators’ cars this Sunday morning from 6am to 12pm. He needs a lot of people to volunteer as it’s going to be a big event, with proceeds going to Prostate Cancer and to supporting our local community. He’s even offering a ‘fine free’ meeting next Wednesday night for all volunteers!

- Koala Fodder Plantation, Mapleton
Planting day is coming up soon on Sunday July 16 with the planting of the 500 specifically chosen eucalyptus tube stock. The ground will be prepared and the holes dug already.  It starts at 9.00am with a formal opening by the Sunshine Coast Council and then the work begins. It’s happening at Spring Pastures Drive, Mapleton. There will be refreshments for the volunteers.

There will be people from various clubs and organizations to help out. Because of this, they are asking volunteers to register so they can keep track of the numbers. Nambour Rotary Club is responsible for running the event.

Here’s the link, so click on it and come along on the day to help feed sick and orphaned koalas - https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/koala-fodder-plantation-day-tickets-652591517797,

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 7TH JUNE
President Paulette opened the meeting by welcoming members and a guest, former Rotarian Scott Wassman, who has recently moved to Maleny. She congratulated Rick Vickers on receiving the Sunshine Coast Volunteer of the Year award that morning.  She also confirmed that the Change Over Dinner would be held at the Hotel on 28 June in our normal meeting room. The two course meal cost would be $38 a head with alternate drops.

Roly N thanked all the team of members, partners, Interactors and others who had assisted in the Food Stall and at the gate in what appears to have been a record breaking Show. There were huge sales of food with the supplies purchased for both days being sold on the Friday. He said that he hoped to receive similar support for the Club's Golf Day on 30 September.

Ric T reported that the offsite  parking arrangements for the Show raised $3,500 for the Mens Shed, Historical Society and the Car Club.

Sherryl said that the International Convention in Melbourne had been very well organised and she had been impressed, particularly with the use of the Theme "IMAGINE". The other attendees from the Club said how much they had enjoyed it.

After a financial assault from our Sergeant, our volunteer Guest Speaker was our own Rick Vickers, wearing one of his many hats. He is a nominee on the committee which is to report on the Sunshine Coast Council proposal to establish an ecological park in the hinterland on 65 hectares of land,  adjacent to Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve.

The project provides an opportunity to expand our accessible green spaces by creating a unique destination for the whole community, inspired by the beautiful natural environment of the Sunshine Coast. An ecological park is a type of park that will support nature-based recreation, education, and research, whilst protecting, celebrating, and restoring the sites inherent environmental, natural, and cultural heritage values. The ecological park is a long term project aiming to restore natural ecosystems over many years and decades, allowing the community to be part of the restorative process. The vision for the ecological park is to create a place of cherished nature and ecological wonder for generations to discover and enjoy.

After a lively question and answer session, Keith  gave Rick a well deserved vote of thanks.

PRESIDENT'S NOTES
a) Our next meeting at The Maleny Hotel on Wed 7 July 2021 under Qld COVID-19 Regulations is a dinner meeting. Following the end of the recent lockdown across the Sunshine Coast, we can all look forward to some fellowship, tall stories and an interesting presentation from Amanda Kennedy in relation to the Library Services available at our local Maleny Library. It will also be a memorable occasion with the upcoming induction of Neil Andison aka the Platypus Whisperer. His mentor will be Ric T.
b) Recent Club events and Community Service
- My sincere thanks to Bernice and John McL Jim A, Mike G, Craig S, Fran T Ric T and Paulette S for their assistance at our recent 62nd Annual Changeover Dinner. It was a pleasure to host our outgoing 9600 DG Neil Black, outgoing AG for our Hinterland Cluster Jan Lawton and our new incoming 9620 AG for our new Kenny Cluster, Tony Long. And a huge congratulations to Sherryl G and Jo Turner for their well-deserved PHF awards. Thanks again to all the members of the outgoing Board, and I look forward to working with our new Board and all our members in an exciting Rotary Year under the new theme for 2021-2022 Serve to Change Lives. The seed that Paul Harris sowed in 1905 has “blossomed into a large tree covering over 210 countries and geographical regions, with over 34,000 clubs with a combined membership of over 1,200,000 Rotarians worldwide. Incoming Rotary International President Shekhar Mehta, has urged members to become more involved in service projects, saying that caring for and serving others is the best way to live because it changes not only other people’s lives, but also our own. He has adopted the guiding philosophy that ‘Service is the rent I pay for the space I occupy on this earth, and I want to be a good tenant of this earth.’ Mehta encourages us to lead by example and inspires Rotary members to participate in projects that have measurable and sustainable impacts.

- Many thanks to Chris B & Paulettte S for parking duties at Australia Zoo on Sunday 27 June and for Bernice and John McL on Sunday 4 July. My roster on Friday 2 July was cancelled due to the Lockdown. As I have reported previously, car parking at Australia Zoo has proved a solid source of revenue when so many of our usual other carparking and fundraising activities have been cancelled throughout our previous Rotary year due to COVID 19.
- Another huge thankyou to Jeff C for his meticulous organisation of a very successful Shelterbox Display at Maple Street on Sunday 27 June and publication of an excellent timely article in the local GC&MN newspaper and MDSRC electronic news. And hats off to all of our club members and partners who attended throughout the day from 7.30 am for set up to about 2 pm for the packing up of the equipment. It was a very visible Rotary event showcasing one of our international charitable causes to our local community, enabled us to raise donations for Shelterbox from our community and visitors to Maleny and also proved a fine opportunity to enhance outdoor camping skills.
- And congratulations to Rick V for assisting MACG with their COVID plan (spinners and weavers) for their part in Knitfest.
c) Upcoming Events
- 28 Jul Due to the COVID 19 Lockdown across the Sunshine Coast from last Wed to Fri, our 30 Jun Vocational Visit to The Maleny Chocolate Factory behind Monicas CafĂ© & Pizza afterwards at Jenn’s Pizza located at Finbars Bicentenary Lane has been postponed to the 4th Wed in July namely Wed 28 July. We hope members are able to reschedule.
- 1 Aug Kenny Cluster Joint meeting with new 9620 DG Wendy at Australia Zoo commencing 8 am to 10 am.
- 28 Aug Pride of Workmanship Dinner. The first facebook POW event notifications have been published, and GC&MN articles published and Paulette S and Greg W and Alan W have commenced walking around Maleny businesses to promote participation in the event commencing Mon 14 Jun 2021. If you would like to join us, please contact either Paulettte S or Craig S for arrangements
- 17 Oct Kite Flying Event – at Beersheba Living Museum, Ziza Field and Maleny Settlers Green. We will be working with our Speak Up Now partners, Blackall Range Zonta Club, Maleny Neighbourhood Centre and Maleny District Sport And Recreation Club (Gail Denver) to plan and deliver this new creative arts and recreation event involving local children and their parents with a theme of Domestic and Family Violence and Elder Abuse Prevention.
- Woolworths BBQ Roster. Just a reminder to keep an eye out for the roster.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 16TH JUNE
President Greg welcomed members and guests Neil Andison again and Nathaniel Audley, a Year 10 student from the Maleny State High School Interact group. We listened to CL Claridge give a comprehensive update on the various activities that Rotary ( and of course RAWCS) is undertaking in Nepal. We all had our eyes opened to the excellent work and dedication of their team leaders to make such a difference to ethnic minority women and blind/disabled women in setting up their own enterprises.

Then our guest speaker, Nathaniel Audley reported on his attendance at the recent RYPEN Youth Camp at Coolum in May. He gave an informative and humorous talk on the challenges faced by the RYPEN members, describing the many activities that challenged their initiative, communications and teamwork, while being hit by many distractions to test themselves. Despite the pressure it seems they all enjoyed the event and found out a bit more about their own limitations and strengths. Nathaniel's mum, Mandy, who also attended our meeting, also found out what he did at the camp.

Rick V gave the vote of thanks.

PRESIDENT'S NOTES

Vale Clem Renouf, an Inspiring Rotarian:

Sir Clement William Bailey RenoufAM was an accountant and former President of Rotary International 1978-79. In this latter role he contributed significantly to the planned eradication of poliomyelitis worldwide. He was born in Ingham in 1921. He joined the Nambour Rotary Club in 1950 and remained a member. He was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 1979, was knighted in 1988 "for outstanding service to the community" and awarded the Centenary Medal in 2001. In 1988, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative was launched, using the resources of all four organisations -World Health Organisation, UNICEF, the Centre for Disease Control in Atlanta, national governments and other donors. At that time, wild polo virus was endemic in more than 125 countries. Now it's only left in two. Clem dreamed of living to see a polio-free world. We haven’t quite got there but we are very close. While he was titled and had received many awards, to those who met him he was simply ‘Clem’, a remarkable man. We will have a small tribute to him at our club Zoom meeting this week.

We have been successful in receiving recent approval for Rotary Foundation District Grants for two club projects. One is for a Solar Buddy light project, championed by Chris Brooker. We hope to partner with the Maleny High Interact Club in this project to assemble as many as 40 solar lights to distribute to a school in PNG or the Solomon Islands. If you are good at following instructions and assembling things from kits, please volunteer your time to Chris to help with this hands-on project.

The second grant is for a Domestic and Family Violence Project we are working on with the Zonta Club of the Blackall Range and the Quota Club of Maleny. The grant funding is specifically for DV emergency information signs for men’s amenities. The Zonta Club has already produced and sited signs in women’s amenities on the Range. This combined services project has a very active Facebook page with daily postings of current DV information, as well as resources. For example, there is a resource for Hairdressers who find a client needs DV help. There is also a Bystanders Resource to assist family members or friends who want to help in a DV situation.
The Facebook page is named: Combined Service Clubs of Maleny and the Blackall Range.
Alarmingly domestic and family violence incidents spiked during the COVID-19 lockdown period as revealed in a recent Monash University Report published in The Age this week:

·        Monash University surveyed 166 practitioners about family violence during the COVID-19 pandemic.
·        59 per cent said the frequency of violence against women had increased.
·        Half said the severity of violence increased as well.
·        42 per cent said more victims were coming forward for the first time.
·        Perpetrators are using the pandemic to inflict new forms of violence and control.

The United Nations Population Fund has predicted that for every three months lockdowns continue, an additional 15 million cases of domestic violence will occur worldwide.
I am pleased to report that another 25 bottles of hand sanitiser have been delivered to the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre (MNC) specifically for the ‘Women’s House’.  The remainder of the sanitisers will be delivered to the Maleny Flexi-school in the next week. This was a very handy little project funded by a Rotary Foundation District grant.
This will be my last Bulletin report as President in the RI year of “Rotary Connects the World”. We have had an extraordinary year in many ways. We could never have anticipated in July 2019 what events would unfold over the next 12 months. We have had to adapt to a ‘new normal’ over the last couple of months or so. I hope you have enjoyed our Zoom meeting programs. Thank you to Paulette for hosting these meetings. Restrictions are easing and I hope soon we can meet again face to face. Thank you all, for your support over the last 12 months.  I have great confidence that we are headed for an exciting year ahead with Greg Williams at the helm as President, with the RI theme of “Rotary Opens Opportunities”.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 3RD JUNE
President Sheryl opened the Zoom meeting with a welcome to all Rotarians and to our special guests Barry, Micah and Eric. All together 21 people attended. Apologies were received from Melinda and Andy.

Rotary R100: A short video was shown celebrating 100 years of Rotary in Australia and New Zealand 1921-2021, sponsored by Caboolture Rotary Club.  Maleny Rotary has been challenged to decide on a project to support a century of Rotary Down Under
.
Maleny High School Chaplaincy: Micah Jones the current Chappy tuned in a little late because of the demands of a challenging day at the high school. He welcomed the opportunity to talk to us about what is happening at the high school. The health restrictions imposed on all schools because of Covid-19 have created a unique situation, both when the school was closed and now with the return of all students. Teacher have been anxious about the closure and the return of students, while students have been concerned with their future and re-establishing relationships with their friends after lock down. The school chappy is now a support to students/teachers/parents and families. Micah outlined his future projects to mentor students and develop leadership.

Maleny Neighbourhood Centre: Barry Smith gave us an update on the MNC Women’s House Project which provides temporary accommodation for women and children in desperate situations. He thanked Maleny Rotary for the ongoing support of the project which is wholly funded by the community with no government funding. Since opening, 14 women and 12 children have been provided with temporary accommodation. A report on the project has been sent to the club.

2021 Calendar: Lionel indicated that preparations for the 2021 calendar were going well; advertisers have been locked in and the photo competition will close on 12 June. If anyone has a photo for the competition, Lionel would be please to see it entered.

Rotary Foundation: Eric Wood, District Chair of the Rotary Foundation, was given the honour by President Sherryl of presenting a Paul Harris Fellow to a member who has always put up his hand when there is a job to be done.

Congratulation Lionel Tilley from all club members on being award a Paul Harris Fellow with sapphire.

Eric gave an update on the strain being placed on the Rotary Foundation because of the global needs for Covid-19 projects. He also gave an outline of the changes in the way the Foundation will operate with Global Grants and the need for clubs to become familiar with the new system.

Club History: Chris Brooker gave a history of the Club’s involvement with the Mary Cairncross Park starting in 1959 until the current day.

PRESIDENT'S NOTES
We are living in extraordinary times. I am confident that the RC of Maleny will survive this serious hiccup in our history. We have now managed to connect on-line for two club meetings. The board has also had the last two Board meetings on Zoom. I think we are finally getting the hang of it. The District also is having fortnightly President’s on-line meetings which are very informative. It seems that even though COVID-19 emergency restrictions - if all continues to go well - are going to be relaxed gradually, we may be using some form of on-line platform for a while yet. To accommodate this, the Board decided at the meeting this week to invest in a 12 month Zoom Pro subscription. Thanks to Paulette, who is our official ‘Zoom Champion’ for organising this.

This means we have much more flexibility in whom we can invite to meetings and no time restrictions. Paulette will schedule our meetings and be the host, so that I can just concentrate on chairing the meeting. Unfortunately, not everyone could connect for the last meeting. Let’s hope for the next meeting on Wednesday 20 May, we get everyone connected again.  I’m trying to schedule a variety of speakers each meeting to make them interesting and informative. Rick V certainly excelled with his presentation last meeting. Thanks Rick, for showing us how it can be done.

Secretary Bernice will send around the minutes of this week’s board meeting. Some of the highlights:
• We will disperse a second round of community grants funding now that we have had reimbursement from the District for the 2019 grants which were completed.
• I have submitted a District Grant application this week for the printing of Domestic and Family Violence emergency signage for men’s amenities on the Range, to complement those already placed in women’s amenities by Zonta. This is one stage of the DV project that I have been working on with the Range Presidents of Zonta and Quota.
• Chris B has proposed the Club gets involved with the Solar Buddy Project. This project, championed by the RC of Ashgrove the Gap, involves making Solar Lights to send to our neighbouring Pacific Island nations. This could be a great hands-on project to which we could all contribute. Chris will investigate this further.

You can find out more information about SolarBuddy at :   https://solarbuddy.org/.  SolarBuddy is an Australian charity uniting a global community with a big dream to gift six million solar lights to children living in energy poverty by 2030, to help them to study after dusk and improve their education outcomes.

 • The club is purchasing a new BBQ and sausage sizzle equipment from Volunteer grant funds we received last year. When we get more fully up and running again, we’ll have a spanking new BBQ set-up.
• The Board agreed to continue shared sponsorship for Kenedi Lucas, our sponsored student who attended St Jude’s School in Tanzania. Kenedi has graduated from St Jude’s and is now attending university, studying a Commerce degree. Have a look at the latest news from the School of St Jude’s at : https://www.schoolofstjude.org/index-home.html

All Directors asked if their  reports could be forwarded to the Secretary  by 5 June to enable the Annual Report to be completed before the Club Changeover toward the end of June. The Changeover will be very different this year if COVID -19 restrictions are not relaxed.

The annual Rotary International Convention was to be in Hawaii this year. This of course had to be cancelled. Now the Convention will be a Virtual Convention.

Save the Date for Rotary International's Free Virtual Event
"Now More than Ever, Rotary Connects the World: The 2020 Rotary Virtual Convention"
When: 20-26 June.

I hope you have all had a productive time during this period of COVID isolation. For me, I have enjoyed time to ‘slow garden’- planting some vegie seeds and seedlings, weeding, feeding the chooks, watering the vegie patch, and enjoying walks in our beautiful hinterland. See you all at our meeting next Wednesday 20 May at 5pm.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF 13TH MAY
President Sherryl welcomed members to the first regular meeting of the club via Zoom.  This meeting was held using the District Zoom licence and we are wondering if this became an issue as most members were able to log in the previous week using another system.

Bernice asked if any members who haven't already done so to advise by 19 May if needing a hard copy or a digital copy of the Rotary Down Under. Some members have already made their choice and I thank them for doing so.
Ric Townsend gave an interesting session on how the COVID – 19 virus control was  managed in Taiwan as that country was the first to relax the restrictions.  There were a number of reasons that contributed to the low number of positive cases and deaths – 438 cases of the disease  and 6 deaths.
• Taiwan learned from the SARS outbreak some years back.
• Health authorities were disciplined to act quickly and tested the community very early after the disease was reported as a possible threat.
• Flights were banned from Wuhan very early in the epidemic.
• Human temperature checks were conducted widely in the community.
• Social distancing was practiced early.
• Everyone  wore face masks if sick to protect the community and the wearing of face masks is also the practice in the winter flu season
• Large supply of face masks and disinfectant are distributed to the community.
• There are teams who had a license  to disinfect  public areas to protect the community.

Ric also gave us a short talk on  the Club Facebook Page and explained how it all works.

Chris Brooker held a sergeant's session but didn't raise enough dollars to warrant John driving around to collect the fines.

Rick Vickers gave a fantastic coverage of his and Cilla's recent time in Morocco. Having landed in Marrakesh, they then went on to join a conducted tour of the most interesting places. This talk was accompanied by some beautiful photography - these are available in a PDF attached to the notice of the meeting.

An interesting tour of the Textile Museum showed some traditional tribal hand woven rugs and also the traditional Moroccan rugs.  Cilla also had a wonderful time exploring the hand made jewellery. A visit to the Atlas Mountains and seeing date palm plantations and mud brick buildings were also an interesting part of their travels. The people were very polite and courteous at all times. When the COVID – 19 virus became a world wide topic all public areas closed suddenly. Rick and Cilla were very fortunate to be able to travel home safely before all borders were closed to travel. Fourteen days in isolation after arriving home was a small price to pay for arriving in Australia safely.

Many thanks for this interesting account of your holiday Rick.

Greg spoke of a planned working bee at Settlers Green to erect the signs on Thursday 14 May to commence at 8 am. There will be groups of two people and social distancing will be practiced. There may be some members from the Maleny Garden Club assisting also.  Greg will send an email around to the volunteers with all the necessary information prior to the day.

President Sherryl thanked the speakers for their contribution and also the members who were able to join  the meeting. There will be another meeting on 20 May for which information will be circulated.
